  • NCIS features an oddly full-featured iPhone

People on TV really are different from you and me. Already we know that with the power of bionic hearing, they can use their iPhones upside-down; now apparently they've got special iPhones with mil-spec video capabilities as well. Evidence: last week's "Designated Target" episode of CBS's NCIS. You can watch for yourself on CBS's innerTube player or purchase the episode in iTunes.

Shortly after the opening credits, as the team analyzes the brutal dual murder of a Pentagon official and a cabdriver, one of the NCIS agents (Sean Murray's "Tim McGee") analyzes the video captured from the cab's onboard camera -- by plugging the camera into his iPhone with what appears to be a combination RJ-45/iPod docking cable. Lo and behold, this frankencable allows the iPhone to display the cab video in strikingly high-res black and white. Perhaps Erica has been consulting for the Pentagon?

If you see further examples of such blatant iPhone abuse, by all means send them in.

    Thanks Heidi

  • How much is your iPhone contract worth to Apple?

How much is your iPhone contract worth to Apple? Today, we got a concrete answer. It's worth €600. According to MacRumors, Deutsche Telekom will start selling an unlocked iPhone for €999 as well as the locked €399 version that comes with a two year contract. For those who don't want to jump over to google, that €600 is equivalent to $879.48 at today's exchange rate. That's very, very close to the New York Time's estimate of $831 late last month.

I worked up a little math based on these costs and our recent options coverage. At the going American rates, you pay $399 for the iPhone. Add to that either $1440, $1920, or $2400 for the individual 2-year costs and clearly Apple is getting a huge chunk of that money. If you go the contract-free way that I did, those costs drop to $1200 for the least expensive plan, assuming a 2-year period of use. If you then, as I did, go ahead and drop your data plan, that number drops even lower, to $719.76. In other words, I just became a loss to AT&T if they have to fork over the full normal value to Apple for two years. What do you think? Is AT&T sending a fixed amount or a percentage of the monthly fees?

  • iPod touch audio in reportedly working

Over at the iPod touch fans forum, user Marian reports that he's managed to confirm that the iPod touch audio input pins are active. He modded an old docking cable, connecting the line-in pins to an audio source. He then used my voice recording app to capture the signal. You can see pictures of his setup on his personal blog.

I'd really appreciate it if any of you own an iPod mike (iTalk, MicroMemo, whatever) could test it with VoiceNotes on a touch and see whether these pre-built solutions are also compatible.

Update:Marian writes that he's recorded from audio line in. You can find a sample he recorded here. He's now working on attaching a mike. Unfortunately, since I exclusively record using the voice-optimized AMR codec, the quality is just so-so.

  • Is Apple about to implement data persistence for Safari?

If the rental evidence we posted about earlier isn't enough, iPhone hacker extraordinaire Pumpkin has discovered evidence that we may soon see core persistence. TUAW wonders if this is possibly for Safari. Persistence refers to data that gets stored between sessions, similar to the way that Google Gears. This allows web apps to function off-line, when you are not connected to EDGE or Wifi, as well as online, when you are. Like GoogleGears, this mystery "CP" class (from the iPhone's AppSupport framework) relies on SQL databases to store and retrieve data.

So is this firm, hard evidence? No. Is it suggestive? Definitely.

Update: Webkit Persistence. Thanks Robert Mohns.

  • Yet even MORE evidence of upcoming iTunes rentals

Today's evidence comes to you courtesy of the Apple iPhone. iPhone Developer Pumpkin. He has discovered even more rental-specific information, this time in the iPhone's lockdown daemon file. Lockdown is responsible for authorizing your iPhone for services. For example the lockdown files are involved in authorizing phone service and is also responsible for communication between the device and the computer in general

A string search through the lockdownd executable in /usr/libexec produced the following hits when searched for "rental":

    pumpkin:~ pumpkin$ strings /usr/local/share/iphone-filesystem/usr/libexec/lockdownd | grep -i rental
    trigger_rental_bag_verification: Could not retrieve FairPlayID
trigger_rental_bag_verification: Could not initialize FairPlay context
trigger_rental_bag_verification: Could not verify the rental bag response: %d
    load_rental_bag_request: Could not retrieve FairPlayID
load_rental_bag_request: Could not initialize FairPlay context
load_rental_bag_request: Could not generate rental bag request
load_rental_bag_request: Could not create mutable dictionary
load_rental_bag_request: Could not create CFData from request message
    load_rental_bag_request: Could not create CFArray
load_rental_bag_request: Could not create CFNumber from indice
    RentalBagResponse
    RentalBagRequest
    pumpkin:~ pumpkin$

As of last night, Apple still did not have a public rentalBag web objects interface the way it does for storeBag and secureBag, the two XML files it publishes on its Phobos server. Hopefully, once readers start occasionally pinging http://phobos.apple.com/rentalBag.xml.gz and http://phobos.apple.com/rentalBag.xml, you'll let us know via the Tip line if and when you see any life.

    Thanks PlanetBeing

  • Tekserve joins in the discount Friday fun

NYC's venerable Mac retailer Tekserve has posted a list of discounts for its post-Thanksgiving one day sale, available in person or on phone orders. The savings include a steep 30% discount on the Elgato EyeTV Hybrid and Turbo.264 units; a $300 savings on the previous-edition 24" iMac, $40 off a LaCie 160GB portable drive (first 50 customers only), and plenty more.

The days of BARS may be well behind us (Before Apple Retail Stores), but Mac users of longer memories will recall how challenging it once was to find a storefront shop with the savvy, supply and sticking power to serve the Apple customer community. This holiday season, in addition to your shopping excursions to the mothership's outlets, please make an effort to support the remaining independent resellers who stood by the platform during the lean years.

Is your local indie Mac shop offering Friday sale discounts? Post a comment here to let us know and we'll summarize the sales on Friday morning.

  • Apple Store Black Friday Event

It appears that Apple is joining the Black Friday madness with a special sale set to go live the day after Thanksgiving, both online and in their retail locations. Quoth the ad: At this "a special one-day-only holiday shopping event... you'll find dozens of great iPod, iPhone, and Mac gift ideas - all with free shipping."

Down in the footnote at the bottom it says: "Sale prices are available while supplies last" suggesting that there will be a few deals to go along with the "gift ideas." The "one-day-only holiday shopping event" goes live online at 12:01am PST on November 23, and whenever your local Apple store opens. So if Turkey day hasn't knocked you out, get thee to an Apple store on Friday for some undisclosed special deals on Apple goodies.

  • T-Mobile to offer Germans unlocked iPhones - at a price

After the news yesterday of T-Mobile being issued a restraining order on iPhone sales in Germany, T-Mobile has announced that an unlocked version of the handset will be available to German customers only. Albeit, it'll set you back €999 - that's US$1,477.97 or £716.

Before you rush out and buy an unlocked handset, you might want to consider the maths. It's just £183 cheaper than the minimum cost of a U.K. iPhone and just under $400 cheaper than an American handset, including the lowest contract term for the locked handsets. Let's not also forget that you'll need some kind of SIM card and network service on top of that thousand euros. We're guessing that an unlocked French iPhone is likely going to set you back an identical figure.

Of course, with this huge premium being demanded, I'm certain that the iHacking talents around will have people begging for more unlocks for the foreseeable future.
