- Apple marks 30th November as worldwide Black Friday
Those looking to save on Apple gear post-Thanksgiving, but not living in the U.S. to take advantage of 'Black Friday' take note: Apple's worldwide stores are running 'Black Friday' promotions on Friday November 30th, both online and in Apple Retail Stores.
Whilst the discounts are typically not huge (and exclude the iPhone, iPod touch, MacBookPro and Mac Pro), if you've got your eye on something from Apple this Christmas, you may want to see what the discounts are like this Friday.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

This one is a little bit of inside (blogging) baseball, but I know a lot of our readers blog themselves and so might find this tip handy. Ankur Kothari (whose Quicksilver customizations we've mentioned before) has cooked up an excellent little Quicksilver plugin called IconGrabber that does exactly what it sounds like. It allows you to easily create an image of an application icon at an arbitrary resolution in one of several popular image formats. Using a few simple terminal commands to change the defaults you can select the default image size and format. So, for instance, here at TUAW we post lots of icons at 125px wide in the jpeg format. With IconGrabber I can now create those images in one step as you see above, where I'm saving the Time Machine icon to my TUAW pictures folder. If you're not a Quicksilver fiend, Ankur also has a stand-alone application to do the same thing. In any case, if you regularly need to extract icons as images, IconGrabber is a godsend.
IconGrabber is a free download for either the Quicksilver plugin or the stand-alone application. The instructions for customizing are in the announcement post and the comments below.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Hardware, Retail, Software, Deals, Holidays
You love the holidays and TUAW loves bringing you the deals. Here are some deals that have caught our eye recently:
- Buy any new iMac and get the new Miglia TVMini2 for £1!: This is an amazing price for a great European TV tuner.
- Save $35 on EyeTV Hybrid or Turbo.264 with free shipping: A good deal--although I bet the price will be even better during MacWorld. I bought my EyeTV hybrid during last MacWorld for $99. I absolutely love mine!
- Free Online Freeverse Games: Games include 3D Hearts, Chocolatier, Bejeweled 2, Ancient Spider Solitaire, etc. Update D'oh. Not all of these appear to be free! Only 3D Hearts. My bad!

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPhone
Zach Nelson at Inc.com has seen the future of computing, and it is the iPhone. He writes:
"Some people use it to play music. Others marvel at the photo-browsing interface, and some of its users just want to look cool. I don't care about any of those things when I look at the iPhone. What I see is the breakout of the next major enterprise computing platform."
This is basically what I said after my first full day with the iPhone. It's a portable computer that just happens to make phone calls, not a phone that performs a few tricks. Months later, my feelings haven't changed. I use it primarily as a computer (and an iPod) and occasionally as a phone. In fact, when I'm showing it off to people, the phone features (making calls, working with contacts, etc.) are what they're least interested in. Email and the internet are always first.
With that in mind, I'll share my ten favorite iPhone-optimized web sites.
- meebo. Nice AIM implementation. No frills, just function.
- PocketTweets. Until we get Twitterrific for the iPhone, I'll use PocketTweets. It looks nice and works.
- Leaflets. A portal for several useful iPhone-optimized pages. I especially like their Newsvine, Flickr and Major League Baseball implementation.
- JiWire. Quickly find public Wi-Fi in your neighborhood.
- Tomatometer. Find reviews on nearly any movie.
- MoviesApp. Somehow, pulling up movie times on an iPhone impresses people more than anything else.
- PopTakeout. Browse top headlines from Digg, Newsvine, Delicious, more. Plus, the Chinese takeout box icon is cute.
- MyPhoneFootball.com. No frills, just speedy updates on NFL scores and standings.
- Fumbleview. Real-time, java-powered play-by-play on your favorite NFL games plus chat. I love it.
- Weather Underground humiliates the iPhone weather widget.

Filed under: Retail, Tips and tricks, Apple
Got your eye on some free-shipping merchandise at the Apple store but need to pay with Paypal? If you call the customer support number, they'll tell you that Apple won't accept Paypal. You can sigh and walk away, or you can point your browser to the PayPal Plug-in Page and set yourself up a Secure Card virtual credit card number, valid wherever Mastercard is accepted--including the Apple online store.
Tap on the phrase "Mac user?", tap, Continue, and then tap on Secure Cards. Use the Paypal tools to generate your (unique) MasterCard Secure Card number, which you can use at the Apple Store. You'll need the card number, the expiration date and the CVC2 number for checkout.
Thanks, drudge.
