- Safari 3 Beta Update 3.0.4 for Windows
Filed under: Internet Tools, Software Update, Apple, Beta Beat
With all the updates coming out of Cupertino, some were bound to slip under our radar, and it doesn't help that this update is for Windows. The Safari Beta for Windows has been updated to 3.0.4, and according to the release notes many bugs have been squashed.
New in this release is the ability to resize the Safari window from any side, new hot keys, a new font smoothing setting, and more. There are also some security related fixes in this update, so if you're running the Safari Beta on a Windows machine you should really update.
How many people out there are using Safari on Windows? Sound off in the comments.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Until recently turning your Mac into a PVR has generally meant using Elgato's EyeTV (our coverage) with hardware from Elgato or a related vendor. Now, however, AMD is getting in the Mac PVR game with the ATI TV Wonder 650 Combo USB for Mac (say that three times fast!). The Wonder 650 has dual tuner that can receive free over-the-air ATSC high-definition content as well as standard definition NTSC content from cable or antenna. With the two tuners you can "watch analog TV while recording digital TV at the same time" (I take it that this means you can't record one HD stream while watching a different one).
In addition to the 650 itself (which includes hardware based MPEG-2 compression) the package includes ATI's tvPORTAL for Mac software. Much like EyeTV this allows you to watch and pause live video as well as set up timed recordings with a programming guide.
The ATI TV Wonder 650 Combo should be available by the end of the month for $149.

Filed under: Humor, iPod Family, Video, How-tos, Tips and tricks, Odds and ends
I think we somehow missed this at TUAW, but I have no idea how. Just in time for everyone to head home for the holidays (and forget their iPod chargers), here's a quick fix solution to get that battery back up and you back listening to The Cars' Greatest Hits. Household Hacker put this together, and unfortunately they say on the same page that you should not attempt this at home if you're not an expert, but all of you TUAW-reading iPod owners out there are experts, right? If you do try this, don't hurt yourselves or your iPods.
How does it work? Beats us-- the electrolytes in the Gatorade might be breaking down the individual cells of the onion, and releasing excess energy as electricity of some kind, but obviously that's just a guess based on my many years of watching Bill Nye, Beakman's World, and more recently, Mythbusters (pop science for the win!).
There is one major problem with this plan, however, and that is that as of right now, onions do not properly install updated firmware for any iPods of any generation. Hopefully, Apple will fix this oversight in the next Software Update.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: iPod Family, Podcasts, iPhone
The iPhone mobile music store doesn't serve up podcasts, so where are you gonna go for a fresh hot bowl of Auntie Beeb? Why, to the BBC itself, silly. The BBC's radio labs blog just announced a new iPhone-savvy webpage that offers simple phone and iPod touch browsing.
If you're on a touch or iPhone, you can just go to bbc.co.uk/podcasts and save yourself some extra typing. The site recognizes when you're visiting from an iPhone and they plan to expand this service to other hand-held devices.
Thanks, Chris

So far as I can tell, practically everybody loves Leopard's Quick Look previewer. For today's Mac 101 I thought I'd share a few tips about using Quick Look.
- First is nice little tip from Mac OS X Hints about zooming in Quick Look. If you invoke Quick Look with the spacebar you can actually zoom in on the image in a couple of ways. You can hold down the option key and use your mouse's scrollwheel/ball (or two-finder scrolling on a touchpad) to zoom in and out. You can also zoom in by holding down the option key and clicking on the image, or zoom out by holding shift-option. While zoomed in you can also click and drag to pan the image. Strangely, the same shortcuts don't work with PDFs, but you can still zoom in and out with ⌘ + and ⌘ - (command plus/minus) with the Quick Look HUD selected.
- The second is that you can use Quick Look with more than one file at a time. So if you select several files in the Finder by command-clicking and then invoke Quick Look with the spacebar, you can scroll between the images with the arrow keys. However, there's also a nifty index sheet icon at the bottom that will bring up a kind of contact sheet with the selected files (as above).
- Finally, I know some folks had complained that the slideshow option has disappeared from the Finder's contextual menu. But if you select a group of files in the Finder and then invoke Quick Look you'll also see a play button that runs a slideshow in the Quick Look HUD.

- Chax returns to Leopard, brings back Growl
Filed under: Software, Freeware, Internet Tools
Long ago, way back in the days before Leopard, the Chax plugin was a necessity for any serious iChatter. But then lo came the new cat, and iChat 4.0 brought with it many of Chax's headline features already built-in: chief among them the tabbed chat interface. But yet some things are still lacking in the shiny new iChat, perhaps most importantly Growl support. So it was with some satisfaction that I see that Chax 2.0b1 is out and returns the flood of iChat Growl notifications to my Leopard desktop. Though its feature list is, per force, shorter than in the old Tiger days, Chax still adds a handy chat-log viewer (organized by buddy), buddy icons in the Dock, and various other little tweaks to make iChat 4.0 feel like home.
Chax 2.0b1 is a free download (donations requested) and is a SIMBL based Input Manager.
Update: For those of you having trouble getting Chax to work properly, you may need to reinstall SIMBL. Be sure to uninstall any previous version (particularly any from a previous Tiger install living at ~/Library/Input Managers).

Filed under: iPod Family, Software, iPhone
We've posted on Webjimbo a couple of times before, and now this interesting web-based interface for the snippet manager Yojimbo reaches version 2 and adds an important new feature: an iPhone-specific interface. Basically, Webjimbo turns your Mac into a webserver that allows you to interact with your Yojimbo notes database from across the internet. With the new iPhone interface you can now get full access to your notes from your iPhone or iPod touch. Other new features includes a webjimbo.com hosted redirecting service (since most home users have a dynamic IP address) and, of course, Leopard compatibility. If you use Yojimbo and you're willing to run your Mac all the time, this looks like a good way to get around the Notes syncing hole with the iPhone.
Webjimbo 2.0 is $29.95 and a demo is available. The upgrade is free for registered users. There's also a demo site where you can see how it actually works on both the desktop and iPhone.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

If you're into videoblogging, and it would seem that everyone is these days, then you have to check out Miro (you may know it as Democracy player). Billed as 'groundbreaking Internet TV software,' Miro 1.0, which was released yesterday, allows you to search, subscribe to, and view any number of video podcasts. A handy guide is built right into the client so you'll never be without content, but if you can't find something that strikes your fancy there the ability to search across a number of video sharing sites is also baked right into the app.
Miro allows you to organize your subscriptions in channels, create playlists, and much more. Miro, as you might expect, is free and requires OS X 10.3 (though 10.4 is required to play some videos). A Windows and Linux client is available as well, but who uses those platforms anymore?Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
