  • Willkomen ins Deutschland, iPhone

    Filed under:

While poor Nik finishes a restless, cold night in Regent Street, the first European iPhones are already in the hands of eager customers in Köln (Cologne), Germany. Macnotes.de has the pictures and the story from the single-store T-Mobile midnight madness launch; online sales in Germany also commenced at midnight, and retail sales across the rest of the country are scheduled for later today. One bonus for the crowd (estimated at 300 or more) of shoppers at the introduction in Köln -- free pretzels from T-Mobile. Yum!

You can see a reasonable Google translation of the Macnotes page here. To all our German readers and new iPhone owners: Es is ganz toll, das Sie konnen jetzt die iPhone Erfahrung haben; sag uns, wie es geht mit die neuen Super-Handys.

  • Apple releases iPhone 1.1.2 update

    Filed under:

As expected, Apple has finally released its 1.1.2 update for iPhone and, presumably, iPod touch. You can download the ipsw file directly from Apple or upgrade in iTunes. The associated documentation is here.

The clock until a reliable 1.1.2 jailbreak appears begins now. You probably want to wait a bit to upgrade if you've invested time and effort in customizing your 1.1.1 iPhone. At least this time, unlocking does not appear to be a barrier to upgrade--especially if you've used the recent revirginizing and safer unlocking methods.

10:45. My download finally finishes. From what I'm hearing there are no new features other than multilingual support. If you find any, shoot us a tip or a comment.

10:55. My AppSnapped iPhone is upgrading without incident. I do not have an unlocked phone but it was AppSnapped for 3rd party support. Just FYI, I manually downloaded the ipsw zip file, added it to ~/Library/iTunes in the iPhone updates folder. Then I did option-update to select it. So if you're seeing that 1.1.1 is still the current version, you can do your upgrade this way.

11:00 I'm pretty sure that this is the iPod touch 1.1.2 update.

11:05. The new "Connect to iTunes" screen now matches the one from the iPod touch. No pretty Earth picture! I'm now trying to get iTunes to recognize that my iPhone is, you know, attached. It gives me "happy chime" but...then not much. Trying to figure that out now. Oh! Wait! Earth. And waiting for activation. Okay! I'm back in the system and all my contact information is still there. Activated!

I"m looking through the Settings and it all appears to look pretty much like it has always had. I don't really see anything new yet. My International keyboards include English, English (UK)--hah that that isn't the standard "English"--French, German, and Italian.

I'm connected now via iPhuc. I'm jailed again. I can see iPhoneDrive, all my Tap Tap Revolution files, etc. A symbolic link I added before upgrading did not work.

11:10. I look (via iPhuc) at my Ringtones folder. All my normal ringtones are there. I'm going to try to restore the Ringtones.plist file now. Not only does it work but New feature alert. My 4 custom ringtones (1 purchased from iTunes and 3 installed via SendSong) all appear in a separate Custom list. Very nice! I see no reason that this shouldn't work for iToner.

11:15. TUAW Reader AppleTwo asks: "So are your 3rd party apps gone after upgrade, or not?". They are, at this time, gone. However, given that I installed them into /var/root/Applications rather than /Applications, they should still be on the phone, albeit inaccesible.

11:40. The name of the new DMG User Bundle is....Oktoberfest. Perfect for a November release. iPhone users may recall that previous bundles were called Heavenly and Snowbird.

Reader (and former TUAW heavyweight) David Chartier asks: "So where did this download come from?" You can find Apple downloads by issuing curl -s -L http://phobos.apple.com/version | gunzip from the Terminal command-line.

Confirmed: INdependence does not seem to be working. "Unsupported version of phone firmware installed. Detected version is 1.1.2"

Confirmed: Some users have been able to downgrade back to 1.1.1 and 1.0.2.

12:10: Generating header files for the 1.1.2 frameworks now. Like last time, it's a lot of annoying fussy work but the results should be helpful.

12;15: Confirmed. The *#307# trick still works. That's the trick that lets you access Safari from an unactivated iPhone with only emergency dialing capabilities.

  • Sandvox 1.2.4 offers Leopard compatibility, more

Karelia has released Sandvox version 1.2.4, with improvements for both Leopard and Tiger users (we've mentioned Sandvox several times). For the uninitiated, it's a WYSIWIG web editor that features iLife integration, .Mac support, beautiful default forms, and drag-and-drop ease. If you like iWeb and Rapidweaver, you'll like Sandvox.

This update includes the following changes:
    • Leopard-ready.
    • Improved compatibility with iPhoto '08
    • Graphical title text size is consistent across all pages within a site.
    • Improvements to many designs.
    • Numerous bug fixes
Check Sandvox out if you haven't. Sandvox requires Mac OS 10.4 or later, is universal and comes in both pro ($79US) and "regular" ($49US) versions. Version 1.2.4 is a free upgrade for registered users.

  • Further evidence for iTunes video rentals

    Filed under:

Evan DiBiase has posted more evidence for upcoming iTunes video rentals. After the recent iTunes 7.5 upgrade he examined the new binary to find what strings had been added. What he found sure looks like video rentals and, possibly, Video on Demand. New strings include: rental-content, rental-bag, getvodaccountselectionlist, GET VOD ACCOUNT SELECTION LIST and supportsRentals among others.

  • Displaperture 1.0

This one is for those that have upgraded to Leopard, but long for an OS X of long ago (or a few weeks ago, as the case may be). One minor change in Leopard, as seen to the right, is that the top two corners of the main menu bar are no longer rounded. They go right to the edge of your screen, which is a welcome change if you ask me. That unused space always bothered me, but if you're longing for those rounded corners long no more. Displaperture 1.0 brings those rounded corners back, and let you control just how rounded they are (and which corners get the rounding treatment).

Displaperture requires Leopard, and is freeware.

  • Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is fighting through enemy territory to get to the Mac

Apple Insider has some shiny new Enemy Territory: Quake Wars screens for your drooling pleasure. I have to say-- the last few Quake games (and I'll include Doom III in that list) haven't really floated my boat much. As good as the graphics look, that old id charm just doesn't seem the same with games like Portal and Halo around. But Enemy Territory was definitely a winner (I played it on my Powerbook quite a bit), and so ET:QW is sure to be some good times.

Unfortunately, Aspyr is porting the game, and their id ports in the past haven't exactly been up to snuff. Plus, apparently they've been hampered by updates to the already-released Windows version, so the Mac version is still only in alpha, while the other versions are out in the wild, already letting folks shoot at each other. And worst of all, AI says there is no online in the alpha version (!). Call us foolish, but we'll at least hold out hope until we see the actual release-- maybe with id making a conscious effort towards Mac gaming, Aspyr will get this one right.

  • Pagepacker open sourced

Aaron Hillegass, owner of the Big Nerd Ranch (and the suavest-looking Mac developer in a cowboy hat), has announced that he's releasing the source of his app Pagepacker to the public. Pagepacker, as reported on TUAW a while back, takes big pages and makes them small-- it's perfect for creating things like the Hipster PDA and other cool, easy-to-carry around organizational tools. I don't know where our own Mike Rose got this term from, but I love what he calls this stuff in the original Pagepacker post: info-origami. Beautiful.

Hillegass still has a guide to use the app on his site, and the source is now available to download as well. Maybe some enterprising open source developer can break it open, and add it to another app or make it even better.
