- Twitterrific 3 is out
When the 'guilty pleasures' conversation starts late at night here at the TUAW home office (located in scenic Leominster, MA) I always raise my hand for Twitter -- a great way to keep up with friends and colleagues across the country, and watching the World Series last week with the tweets of Red Sox Nation popping up on my screen was a surprisingly compelling experience, like an erudite and very terse version of a favorite sports bar.
Of course, a good bit of credit for the popularity of Twitter with Mac users must go to Twitterrific, the Iconfactory's stellar client for Twitter. Twitterrific is so identified with the service that many confuse the bluebird icon for Twitter's official logo. Now updated to version 3, Twitterrific adds a slew of new features (and a new price). The app now displays @replies and direct messages separately and in color, includes tweet deletion and filtering, a Dock tweet count, AppleScript support, and more (full list in the bottom half of the post). All this improvement comes at a cost, however: Twitterrific is now an advertising-supported app (1 ad an hour), or pay $14.95 for an ad-free experience.
By the way, if you want to get TUAW tweets and @reply to us with tips and comments, add TUAW to your Twitter friend list and rock on.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/11/01/twitterrific-3-is-out/#comments - Apple ships RAID cards for Mac Pro and XServe
Filed under: Desktops, Hardware, Peripherals, XServe, Apple, Mac Pro, Leopard
Let me ask you something: do you like fast storage? Redundant, fast storage? Lots and lots of gigabytes of fast, redundant storage? Sure you do, buddy -- but what's with the software RAID on your Mac Pro or your Intel-based XServe? That's so last week, now that Apple is shipping the RAID cards for Mac Pro and XServe; you can now do hardware RAID 0, 1, 5, or (Mac Pro only) 0+1 arrays of SATA drives, or superfast SAS drives on the XServe, for the precise mix of speed and reliability that you're craving.
Formerly only available as build-to-order options but now shipping as add-in parts for $999 each, the cards come with a raft of requirements. First, they're only for the machines mentioned above; G5 XServes are out of luck. Second, you can't mix and match drive types on the XServe, it's all SAS or all SATA please. Third, a minor point, barely worth mentioning really, but both these cards are listed as requiring some sort of OS update. Yes, on the heels of this morning's announcement of the MacBook revisions, we now have a total of three pieces of Apple hardware that demand Leopard to work at all.
Update: Clarified that the cards were previously available as BTO parts. Note that even though the specifications say Leopard-only for these cards, existing RAID cards (and possibly these as well, for anyone brave enough to spend a grand to test them) continue to work with Tiger.

Funny, isn't it, how the in-house projects are the last to get fixed for the new OS? Apple subsidiary FileMaker announced version 9.0v2 today, which provides Leopard compatibility on most features. The IWP web sharing feature, however, remains incompatible with Safari 3 (and Safari 3 beta on Tiger), so you'll have to wait a bit longer -- December, they say -- for that. Also, the Server versions of FM are not yet Leopard-ready. Cue "Jeopardy" theme song.
The download is 348 MB (!) and can be had from FileMaker's site. Complete change notes in the bottom half of this post, or see the PDF from FileMaker.

In what appears to be a clear case of "Mental Health Day Syndrome," the .Mac website has been down for much of the afternoon. Email and Homepage/iWeb services appear to be up, though, and I'm able to connect to my iDisk, so the plumbing is still operational.
Our tipsters note that the site was down for quite a while before the 'maintenance' page went up, so it's possible that this is not a planned outage. If we hear anything else we'll pass it along.
Update: Although I personally can get to the services noted above, comments point out that the .Mac service page is showing red lights across the board except for some users able to get mail.
Update 2: As of 5:05pm ET it looks like everything is green again, with the exception of .Mac Sync still showing issues for some users.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/11/01/mac-calling-in-sick-today/#comments - NYT on unlocking phones
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPhone
Here's a quick link over to today's New York Times article on phone unlocking, which raises a couple of interesting (not to say off-base) points. First, Nokia claims that the current "Open to Anything" ad campaign is not directly aimed at the iPhone... right.
Second, writer Cyrus Farivar characterizes the 1.11 bricking situation thusly:
Apple has tried to thwart the practice [of unlocking] by updating the operating system software, which rendered any updated and unlocked phone useless. But rogue programmers were quickly back at it, and they say they have created software that makes it possible to break the newly updated software lock on the iPhone...
This has been discussed in various venues, but in my humble opinion the 1.11 update was in all likelihood not a deliberate attempt to disable phones; rather, the brickage was an unfortunate side effect. Farivar's phrasing implies an intent on Apple's part to "render phones useless" that may not have been there.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Macworld, Analysis / Opinion, Rumors, Software, Odds and ends, WWDC, Apple, Leopard
What the heck happened to resolution independence?
In Gruber's review of the Powerbook a few years ago, he trumpeted the coming of a feature long evading the Mac faithful, a resolution independent interface. Others at the time expected the same thing to appear in Leopard: UI elements that were completely independent of the screen's resolution, and, finally, a fully scalable interface, and freedom from whatever screen you were working on. Higher resolutions without squeezing down the UI elements. And as we got closer to Leopard, more and more word went around that OS 10.5 would have it. At WWDC 2006, some developers even confirmed it. And Apple even filed a patent to get it done.
Except now it's November, Leopard is out, and resolution independence is nowhere to be found, at least at the user-accessible level. What gives?Continue reading The case of the missing resolution independence

Filed under: Odds and ends, Mac 101
Widgets are way too much fun. Though your Mac ships with a few of them already installed on the Dashboard, frankly they're kind of boring. I mean, how much fun can is a calculator, clock, or calendar? Did you know there's a bunch more hiding in the far corners of your computer, and even more waiting to be discovered online? Let's take a look at where to find the extra goodies.Continue reading Mac 101: Whip your widgets into shape

Now that the cat is out of the bag (man, I have been holding that one in for too long), Apple's support pages have been updated with new and revised articles covering all things Leopardian. There's a support feature page on 10.5, and you can also search the site for all articles with the "kmosx5" tag.
As noted earlier, the developer site is also reveling in Leopard goodness, so ADC members (free to join!) can review loads of system documentation at leisure.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/11/01/apple-support-site-updated-for-leopard/#comments - Leopard Spotlight: the upgrade disc gripe
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Bad Apple, Leopard
Okay, I just have to vent something, but it might be of interest to others as well. As I mentioned earlier, I picked up a new 24" iMac on Leopard Day. Being old stock, it had Tiger on it, but it included a "Mac OS X v10.5 CPU Drop-in Kit" disc in the box. I figured this would just be the same kind of disc as the retail copy of Leopard, but it turns out this is not the case. This disc is upgrade only. When you run the Leopard installer it says that Tiger must already be installed on the machine. Further, it does not offer the standard installation options (Archive and Install, Erase and Install, and Upgrade); it only offers Upgrade.
OK, you say, of course, so what? Just put the disc in and upgrade the virgin Tiger install. Yes, and I did that. But something happened to my machine over the weekend that I could not fix and I had to do a complete wipe and re-install. Here I hit a snag: since the Leopard disc was upgrade only, I actually first had to re-install Tiger and then upgrade to Leopard. This seems completely asinine to me, not to mention a big waste of time. Why should I have to install Tiger before I can install Leopard? Particularly if I ever have to reinstall again -- e.g. if I want to wipe the hard drive before I sell the computer -- I'll have to go through the same process again.
Anyway, now that I've got that off my chest, I thought it might be worth sharing with others, because the same situation will presumably affect both people who buy out the remaining stock of Tiger pre-installed Macs as well as anybody who takes advantage of the OS X up to date program we've posted on before (though I don't know this for sure). So don't be surprised if your Leopard discs come the same way.
Update: It may be that I jumped the gun here. Apparently the three installation options are there--I must just not have looked hard enough. The upgrade disc, however, does seem to require a previous Tiger install (i.e. it won't work on a newly formatted hard drive).Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Gaming, Odds and ends, Leopard
I heard a few times that Disney's new casual MMO Pirates of the Caribbean Online went live yesterday, but MacWorld reminds us that it's out for both Windows and Mac. Metacritic doesn't have too many reviews up as of this writing, but our friends at Joystiq found it to be a fun, easy to get into MMO when they played an earlier build of it, so if you're craving some pick-up-and-play pirate MMO gaming, it might be just what yer lookin' for, matey.Unless you're running Leopard, that is.Currently, the game's system requirements only list Tiger, and while MacWorld doesn't know whether Leopard is supported or not, they're not alone-- I called Laurie at "Pirates Online Customer Support" (boy, Disney sure poured a lot of money into this one), and while she was very helpful, she didn't know whether Leopard was supported or not. I threw a note into their system to try and check, and if I hear back, I'll update the post.
Of course, you could just try downloading and running it yourself in Leopard, but then again this is only one day after Halloween, and running unsupported Disney software on your Mac is pretty scary -- might be a little much along with everything else.
Update: Never mind-- our illustrious commenters say it runs just fine in Leopard. Keelhaul away!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/11/01/pirates-online-goes-live-on-mac-but-not-leopard/#comments - MacBook Pro updates too, 2.6 GHz processor bump
Filed under: Retail, Apple, Macbook Pro
In my excitement over the new MacBook, I totally missed the latest MacBook Pro update. Again, this is a pretty minor change. The processor choices now include a 2.6 GHz Core 2 Duo, in addition to the previously available 2.2 and 2.4 chips. The cost of a 2.6 chip is $250 more than either the 15" or 17" configured with the 2.4 GHz processor and Apple estimates shipping at 2 - 3 weeks. Additionally, as Jon H. pointed out in the comments, all of the hard drive upgrade options are now 5400 RPM or better. I'm not sure when these models will be arriving in the Apple store (they aren't open right now), but if you find out before we do, let us know.
Update: I just got off the phone with my local Apple store -- they already have the new MacBooks (which have Leopard pre-installed) and the 2.6 MBP is a configure to order option only, meaning even if you buy it "in" a store - it is still going to be shipped to you.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/11/01/macbook-pro-updates-too/#comments - Flash player 9 now Leopard compatible
Filed under: Internet, Software Update, Leopard
Adobe has released an update to Flash Player 9, which fixes an issue with flash uploads in Leopard. If you use Flickr's multi-upload feature or other sites that take advantage of the FileReference.upload() function, it is definitely worth installing this update. Make sure to run the uninstaller (linked in the release notes) before installing the new version.
In addition to fixing the Leopard upload issue, the new release candidate prerelease (say that three times fast!) features, among other things, H.264 video support, HE-ACC audio support, scalable full-screen mode and multi-core support for vector rendering.
Thanks Patrick!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Portables, Retail, Apple, MacBook
It looks like the rumors were right. Well, sort of right. The MacBook line has been updated. Before you get too excited, please note that this is a pretty minor update. The MacBooks can now be properly branded as utilizing the Santa Rosa platform (note: platform, not chipset - Santa Rosa is a branding term, like "Centrino"). The processor choice is now either the Core 2 Duo 2.0 or 2.2 GHz, with an updated 800 Mhz front side bus and the new integrated graphics use the updated GMA X3100 (the successor to the GMA 950 that has been used for far, far too long) with 144 MB of shared memory. Stock RAM, hard drive and SuperDrive options remain the same - though the new MacBooks have the capacity to be upgraded to 4 GB of RAM. Prices remain unchanged from the previous revision, so $1499 gets you a 2.2 // 1 GB // 160 // 8x SuperDrive instead of a 2.16 // 1 GB // 160 // 8x SuperDrive.
