- Mac 101: Screen rotation
For today's Mac 101 I thought I'd draw your attention to a feature of the Displays tab of the System Preferences that only appears on external monitors: Rotate. If you plug in an external monitor to your Mac you should see that you have the option to rotate the display by 90 degree increments (clockwise). Now why would you want to do this? Well, if like me you have an external widescreen display, sometimes it's actually more handy to use it vertically instead of horizontally. I do this because I work entirely on the main (24") display and use the external (20") for showing my email, iTunes, etc. On my desk, I feel like this is a more efficient allocation of pixels. You can see a picture of my setup after the jump.Continue reading Mac 101: Screen rotation

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/11/05/mac-101-screen-rotation/#comments - EVE Online Mac client works great
Filed under: Gaming, Software, Macbook Pro
I was a little surprised to hear all the cheering over on the EVE Online post the other day-- I have to say, I had no idea you TUAW readers could get so excited about an MMO (and by the way, my name in game is Frank Dante, if any of you more experienced pilots want to take me on an Omber mining mission).
But now that I know you're out there, I've got even more good news for you. The Mac client has been available to download for a little while now in beta, and it supposedly works great. Plaguelands got it running terrific on a pretty well-fitted MacBook Pro running Tiger. There have been rumors about Leopard not working well, but considering that CCP (the company that makes EVE) specifically mentioned Leopard in their announcement, it should run just as well.
And tomorrow's the day-- EVE players are getting both the new patch, and the new Mac and Linux clients. I'll see you all out there among the belts, mining asteroids and fending off rats.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

There's long been a controversy brewing about Input Managers in Leopard. At first it seemed that they were doomed. Now that Leopard is out, however, the news is not so dire. Input Managers are allowed in Leopard, but the restrictions on their use have increased. Apple has released a Document outlining these restrictions, and warns that Input Manager "functionality is likely to be disabled in a future release." As it stands, however, they can still work so long as the conditions are met, most importantly that they're located at /Library/Input Managers (instead of the corresponding folder in the user's home directory) and the permissions are set properly. This hint over at Mac OS X Hints sets out the procedure to make these changes with a couple of simple terminal commands. The hint itself focuses on the Safari search tool Inquisitor, but the same idea should work (in principle) for other Input Managers (though some will still be incompatible for other reasons). We also previously mentioned Plugsuit which accomplishes the same task, but apparently in a different way (see below).Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Software, Odds and ends
Microsoft is calling it quits on MSN Messenger for Mac, instead choosing to go with an all-new IM client that will work with both AIM/gTalk/ICQ users and folks still on the Messenger network. The Mac version of Messenger was plagued with bugs (and Scott's gripes), and seriously-- why would you use a client like Messenger when you've got iChat and Adium anyway? It's good news that they're planning a new client, and extra good news that it's supposed to work with other protocols.
So no more updates for Messenger on the Mac, but the new client is supposed to be "really, really cool and awesome." Sounds like just what the kids like these days. We'll believe it, of course, when we see it. Messenger 9 for Windows ships next year, so if this new Mac app gets delivered, it'll probably be sometime around then.
Update: A few readers said the post was confusing regarded Microsoft's plans for Messenger on the Mac, so updated for clarity.

Any number of TUAW readers have tipped us off to dozens of Leopard Dock mods. Apparently nearly everyone using Leopard hates the default dock and the easy-to-mod docks make it simple to upgrade to something you like better. For example, here's one suggestion for a glass style dock, a dock color modder, a forum thread all about updating your dock and an entire site fully dedicated to Dock mods. If you'd like to read more, just google for Leopard Dock. Trust me, you'll find lots of hits.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in. You can stop now! But thank you all the same.

Fire up Software Update, gentle TUAW readers, because a new version of iTunes and QuickTime awaits.
iTunes 7.5 adds the ability to activate an iPhone where ever it is available, and support for Phase which is a new iPod game. The usual bug fixes are also in there.
QuickTime 7.3 brings support for iTunes 7.5 (shocking) as well as an updates the export option for iPhone web content and fixes numerous bugs and security updates.

Filed under: Cool tools, Terminal Tips, Leopard
TUAW reader Shaun Haber sent us a link to his personal blog with a great post about using Leopard's Quick Look from the command line, which is wonderfully handy for anyone who spends a chunk of their day in Terminal. The
qlmanage
utility gives you direct access to many Quick Look functions; of specific interest is the -p flag. This option displays the Quick Look generated preview for any file. So if you tell it toqlmanage -p foo.png
, the image immediately pops up in a Quick Look pane.Even better, Quick Look supports slide shows. So if you
cd
into a folder of images and runqlmanage -p *.jpg
, you'll be rewarded with a full-on presentation of your pictures.Other qlmanage flags of interest include -h (displays a help message) -t (thumbnail generation) and -f (a zoom factor to display with).
The downside of qlmanage is that it's full of NSLog-style messages. Haber recommends you pipe the output into /dev/null as follows:

Filed under: Humor, Odds and ends, iPhone
TUAW reader Ashton Tibbitt sent in this great pictorial comparison between his iPhone and a Motorola DynaTAC. The DynaTAC 8000X dates back to the early 1980's and was one of the first mobile phones approved by the FCC. My favorite shot of this series is the side-by-side comparison shot showing exactly how thick the DynaTAC was and how thin the iPhone is.
So how do the two phones compare? Here's a TUAW exclusive iPhone-DynaTAC smackdown.
Battery Life. The iPhone is the clear winner.
Tactile dialing feedback. The DynaTAC's physical buttons nudges it into the win zone for that force feedback experience.
Portability. You can stick the iPhone in your pocket. Inserting the DynaTAC into clothing (or other areas) may cause permanent physical harm.
Expandability. Neither the iPhone nor the DynaTAC officially supports third party apps. (But you can still hack your iPhone. Just don't tell Steve Jobs.)
Muscle Development. You're not going to develop any muscle tone by lifting an iPhone.
Suitability for use as doorstop. No contest. DynaTAC for the win.
Thanks to Ashton for sending these in. I hope you enjoy looking through the pictures as much as I did.

IRC fans rejoice. Leopard's iChat 4 introduces IRC-style /me actions. Just enter
/me
followed by an action and iChat will properly attribute that action to you in the chat window. The action appears outside the "bubbles" in a central text. iChat does not yet support /describe but /me is a great place to start and shows Apple's ever expanding attention to non-AIM standards and capabilities./me approves.

The utility formerly known as 1Passwd, which holds a place of pride in the app folders of many, is currently free for the downloading from Agile Web as part of a Macworld newsletter promotion (no, you don't need to subscribe to download). Since 1Password normally retails for $29.95, this is a bargain -- however, downloaders note that the promotional license is not eligible for upgrading to future versions, nor does it grant the user access to the online version of 1Password, so beloved by iPhone owners.
For anyone managing a lot of web form passwords and signup info, 1Password's ease of entry and Keychain integration are definitely worth a look. Of course, once they get you hooked... that's why the first sample is always free.
