- Of Stevemails and stevedores: Talkcast tonight, live at 10 pm ET
Filed under: TUAW Business, Podcasts
You have to hand it to Gawker writer Ryan Tate; he wasn't timid about giving his new penpal a piece of his mind, salty language and all. Tate let loose with a full-throated defense of iPad pornography, overworked print publishers and the freedom to write once and run anywhere. Of course, in this particular case he was sending aggrieved notes to Steve Jobs -- and, most surprising, Steve chose to write back. Repeatedly. In the wee hours of the night.
Steve's defense of Apple's approach toward Flash on iPhone/iPad and the choices Apple is making about the future of its platforms makes for good reading; Tate's decision to run the emails in a post is one I can only describe as "chutzpadik," although he notes that Steve must be aware that many of his casual one-liners are making news in short order.
[Side note, if Apple hasn't productized Steve's killer spam filter yet, they darn well should get started on that. Unless it's a rotating panel of interns -- that would be difficult to scale.]
All that to say, we're fortunate to have our special time together later tonight on the Talkcast to chat about Stevemails, MacBook rumors, MobileMe betas, Steam releases and more! Join us, won't you?
To participate on TalkShoe, you can use the browser-only client, the embedded Facebook app, or the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the "TalkShoe Web" button on our profile page at 10 pm Sunday. To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (take advantage of your free cellphone weekend minutes if you like): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8. iPhone users may prefer the iPhone-optimized Talkshoe site found here.
If you've got a headset or microphone handy on your computer, you can connect via the free Gizmo or X-Lite SIP clients; basic instructions are here. Talk with you then!

Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - TalkShoe - Facebook - IPhoneПереслать - Found Footage: Alphasmart Neo doubles as iPad USB keyboard
Filed under: Found Footage, iPad
Video from Vimeo. Click link for iPad/iPhone version.
We can now add "entire separate computer" to the list of working keyboards, as the video above demonstrates. Eolake Stobblehouse (who was the benefactor behind TidBITS' staff getting iPads) figured out that his Alphasmart Neo behaves just like a powered external keyboard when connected to the iPad. The Neo is the spiritual descendant of one of the original 'tablet' computers, the legendary Tandy Model 100 series. A week's worth of battery life on a few AA batteries! Those were the days.
Granted, it may seem a bit weird to carry a second machine along just to type into your tablet, but to each their own. Now, if we could get an import utility that would take text files from the Neo and put them on the iPad...
Direct link to the video for iPhone/iPad is here. This video (not produced by us) is hosted on Vimeo, which supports HTML5 playback on their site but does not support embedding.
Thanks to Peter for the tip.

Переслать - Manage your DNS settings for faster web browsing
Filed under: Internet Tools
In the Network Settings pane of your System Preferences, you may have noticed that you can manually set the DNS servers your connection will use. There are a few reasons for doing this, namely speeding up the time it takes to look up any given website, but also to bypass some annoyances in your ISP's (or IT department's) default name server. Such annoyances could include domain blocking, censorship and other things you may or may not know are even happening. For the most part, though, you'd change your DNS settings to make sure you were using the fastest possible server from your current location. Read on to find out how!

Domain Name System - Server - Name server - Unofficial Apple Weblog - DNSПереслать - How to: Creating custom iBook covers
Filed under: iPad
Do you find yourself downloading a lot of the free Project Gutenberg public domain books in the iBookstore? Sick of your bookshelf looking like a series of paper bags with text printed on them? Me too, so I decided to create my own covers for all the free books I've downloaded.
If you've ever added custom album artwork to an iTunes song, you get the basic idea of how to change the cover art of a Project Gutenberg book in your iTunes library. If you haven't, I'll quickly list the steps here:
- In your iTunes library, select the Books category in the source list.
- Select any book that shows it has no cover, right click on it, and select "Get Info."
- Select the "Artwork" tab.
- Drag and drop any image into the white box on the artwork tab and click Okay. Voila! You've just added a custom cover to your ebook.

Project Gutenberg - IPad - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IBookstoreПереслать - Notable iPad apps
Filed under: iPad
The iPad is great for a lot of tasks, but one area of potential appeals to me more than any other: brainstorming and note taking. I'm not alone, judging from the outcropping of specialized apps for doing just this. I haven't had the time (or money) to hunt down and experiment with every note-taking app in the App Store jungle, but I wanted to highlight a few that have stuck out in my search for the quintessential app for idea capture and retrieval. I'm skipping over some of the apps that I consider to be obvious (albeit excellent) choices (e.g. Evernote), mostly because they've already been covered on TUAW, often repeatedly. This is not to belittle them, just to keep things fresh.
Mind Mapping
The first few on my list are mind mapping applications. Mind maps are the easiest and most intuitive way for me to take notes and brainstorm ideas, so that's what I look for first. It's hard to beat a pencil and paper, or even a screen with a full keyboard and keyboard navigation, but some touch-based apps do it just about right. One of the best I've found is iThoughtsHD (US$7.99). It makes it relatively easy to jot notes in a mind map format, with options for node color, icons and organization. It can expand and contract nodes, branches can inherit their parent's options, and you can manually or automatically organize and space out your map. You can add new child and sibling nodes by tapping and dragging, or use handy buttons at the top of the screen. It can import and export maps via WiFi transfer, Box.net and email attachment. When it comes to formats, it handles just about everything I can personally think of, including Novamind, MindManager (6 and 8), iMindMap, XMind, Freemind, and others, as well as multiple image formats. Read on for more mind mapping and note taking apps for you and your iPad.

AppStore - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - Apple - Mind mapПереслать - Vietnamese site leaks details of updated MacBook
Filed under: MacBook
Vietnamese site Tinhte, the same site that leaked video of the next iPhone a few days ago, has published pictures and specs of the next MacBook. On the outside, the new MacBook appears identical to what's currently being sold, with a plastic unibody enclosure and a 13.3" LED-backlit display. Internally, the only changes made to the upcoming MacBook are the introduction of a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce 320M GPU. This is the same CPU/GPU set used in the baseline 13" MacBook Pro. For comparison, the currently shipping MacBook has a 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M GPU.
All other specs remain the same; the MacBook still has a 250 GB 5400 RPM hard drive and 2 GB of RAM. Based on markings on the side of the box, battery performance appears to be unchanged, with the same 7-hour performance as the currently shipping MacBook.
In all, this appears to be a relatively modest update. The larger question is how these Vietnamese sites keep getting pre-released Apple products. Based on Vietnam's proximity to the Chinese factories where these products are built, it seems likely Apple has a factory leak on its hands. It's also worth noting that this new MacBook may be the product referenced by number MC516LL/A K87 BETTER BTR-USA. Last week we thought this product number referred to an upcoming MacBook Air update, but based on this newest leak, it seems the MacBook is a far more likely suspect.
MacRumors cites "reseller reports" and says this new MacBook may ship as early as next week.TUAWVietnamese site leaks details of updated MacBook originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 15 May 2010 18:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Apple - Nvidia - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Intel Core 2 - MacBookПереслать - Ray Zone's 3D Jungle Adventures Comic brings a bit of 1953 to the iPad
Filed under: App Review
Ray Zone's 3D Jungle Adventures (US$0.99) is native iPad comic book that took me back to when I was ten and my parents brought me to a flea market. There I picked up a ten year old copy of The House of Terror published by the now defunct St. John's Publishing Company. It was in gloriously gory anaglyph 3D requiring the use of red-cyan glasses. The first page displayed a scary devil's head that seemed like it was going to jump off the page and grab me, giving me nightmares for weeks.
Now in light of the current 3D craze, a new audience can experience this sort of dimensional schlock-fest in Jungle Adventure, a reprint of a 1953 Jay Disbrow comic. The story is as pulpy as it gets. Nianda, a jungle princess is captured by the evil Stang who wants to make a trade with the chief of the village for a big red ape. Jahka, who must be Tarzan's twin brother, comes to the rescue and fights a drooling Sabre-toothed tiger to win her back, but no one told that to the big red ape.
