- Half Life 2 out on Mac tomorrow
The always impressive folks at Valve have released the trailer above, which will be familiar if you've ever seen a very popular Apple commercial before. And at the end, you'll also see why they've done this: Half Life 2 is coming to the Mac tomorrow, May 26, 2010.
That's pretty much all we have to say -- the first-person shooter is one of the best-reviewed and best-selling games of all time, and it'll be running natively on the Mac thanks to the Steam for Mac release from a few weeks ago. If you've never played Half-Life 2, you're in for a treat, even if you never played the classic first title in the series. We haven't yet heard about a price (the PC version is currently at $20, though Valve has a history of dropping prices unexpectedly -- Portal was free for its Mac release), and while a few outlets are saying the two episodic followups to the game will be out tomorrow as well, we don't yet know that for sure. Stay tuned, as one of the biggest classics in PC gaming finally arrives on the Mac.TUAWHalf Life 2 out on Mac tomorrow originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 25 May 2010 19:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone
The folks at Parrot recently sent around notice that they'll be attending the E3 conference here in LA in about a month or so; at that show, they finally expect to announce a price and release date for the iPhone-controlled quadricopter that some of our readers have been craving ever since it was announced back at CES. Back when we played with the device at Macworld, we were told that it would be around $500 and would come out sometime before the end of this year, but of course, both price and date are still up in the air.
That will remain true until around June 15th, when E3 starts. I'll be there in person, and as soon as I hear a price and date, you will as well. If I get to give it another fly, I'll try not to crash it quite so quickly. My bad on that one.

OK, I'm not sure where I want to go with this.
On the one hand, this is a clever way to carry your iPad when you're out hitting the clubs on Friday night. On the other hand, there's something a little strange about seeing a good-looking woman wearing a "little black dress" with a huge pocket in the front of it.
The Australian iClothing team of Davina Reichman and Luke Staley has created a complete line of iPad-compatible clothing, as long as you consider one style of dress and a unisex t-shirt to be a line. The iDress (AUD$89.95) is a take on the classic "little black dress" of durable cotton sateen with a built-in protective pouch for the iPad. I somehow think this has something to do with the plethora of marsupials in Australia...perhaps.
Fashion-conscious guys and gals alike will want to take a look at the iTee (AUD$49.95), a unisex white or black classic tee shirt that also comes with an iPad-sized belly pouch. If you don't have a set of six-pack abs, the iPad can fill in to give you that rock-hard abdomen you've been looking for. If James Dean was still alive, he'd probably want an iTee to carry his iPad with (complete with pack of cigs rolled up in the sleeve).
The iDress is currently on backorder, but iTees are available in a range of sizes for iPad-toting fashionistas.TUAWiClothing: Fashionable (?) iPad wearables from Australia originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 25 May 2010 17:00:00 EST. Filed under: Accessories
Back at Macworld 2010, one of the surprisingly popular hardware items on the show floor was a simple electrical outlet. FastMac's U-Socket caught the attention of showgoers with a perfect gimmick: a pair of USB charging ports alongside the 15-amp standard AC receptacles. Clear genius -- and, at a show preorder price of $10, a bargain.
That bargain is going to take a bit longer than expected, though. Reader James let us know that FastMac is sending out a progress email noting a later ship date for the U-Socket. The device is now expected to be out in October of 2010, pending some changes to the design that were encouraged by US and Canadian regulatory and safety agencies and by Underwriters Laboratories (the organization behind the little 'UL' symbol on most electronics equipment).
Those who order the U-Socket now for fall delivery do get a couple of other bonuses out of the delay. In addition to Energy Star certification and support for the USB 3.0 standard, the redesigned units will now support 10W charging -- meaning that one iPad can be charged at full speed, or two in slow mode.
If you want to get your USB charging on and you can't wait until October, I still swear by my trusty Belkin mini surge protector. I haven't tried to charge the iPad with it yet, but it does work fine for iPhones, MiFis and all other kinds of USB-chargeable gear.
Thanks James!TUAWU-Socket makes u-wait until October originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 25 May 2010 16:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - IPhone - Energy StarПереслать - EA Mobile: iPad is a "destination device"
EA Mobile's Travis Boatman had a chat with Mobile Entertainment recently, and he says that the iPad is going like gangbusters for the mobile games company. "We're really pleased with the results so far," he told ME. "It has a lot of the characteristics of the type of device that plays well with our gameplay." Boatman said the digital distribution model available in the App Store has helped, but what's really impressed EA about the iPad is how immersive it is compared to the iPhone.
As compared to the iPhone's bite-sized experiences while out and about, this is a device where you can actually sit down and play for a while. "It's more deliberate, and people expect more of a deliberate, immersive experience," Boatman told the site. "That affects the kind of games we build." He also says that as a "blank canvas," the device allows for a lot of experimentation in the UI. At EA, the teams look at customer desire, distribution method, and actual platform before they invest in development, but "for iPad, the answer is yes, yes, and yes."
Interesting. One of the things we've heard from developers about the App Store is that it gives even small studios "the chance to compete with EA," but it looks like EA is just as committed to providing unique titles to Apple's platform.TUAWEA Mobile: iPad is a "destination device" originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 25 May 2010 15:30:00 EST. iPhone - AppStore - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPadПереслать - Chrome for Mac out of beta
Filed under: Internet
Google has taken the "beta" adjective off of the Chrome for Mac browser, signifying that it's ready for primetime. The beta was originally released last December. Google Mac says it's ready for a stable release, and that the browser "provides not only the stability, performance, and polish that every Mac user expects, but also a seamless native Mac application experience that Mac users will feel instantly at home with."
Additionally, the new release allows for full-screen mode (by hitting Command + Shift + F) and will synchronize bookmarks across computers (something I currently have to rely on Xmarks for in Firefox). And since it's Chrome, the update also adds speed bonuses and brings the HTML5 magic, including drag and drop file transfers for those sites that support the feature.
Google also notes that support for a baked-in version of Flash Player will be present in future releases of the browser. It's a little buggy right now (heh), but they're aiming to have it ready and out by Flash 10.1. You can still install and use the current version of Flash, if you want to.

It may seem like odd timing; with the US about to head into the unofficial pre-summer period with the imminent Memorial Day long weekend, the last thing on most students' minds is getting organized for next year. Nevertheless, today Filemaker is setting the Bento 3 Student Survival Kit loose upon the world. The linked set of free Bento templates includes layouts for organizing lecture notes, courses, group projects, special events and job searches (that last one seems timely, now that I think about it). The Survival Kit is part of the Bento Template Exchange, which offers scores of specialized layouts like the Family Organizer pack and the Mail Management tool.
Bento's clean integration with the Mac OS X personal information apps means that students won't have to enter contact information twice, and they can track deadlines and test schedules in iCal with ease. The templates also allow for synchronization with the iPhone and iPad versions of Bento.
Downloading the Student Survival Kit does no good, of course, without a copy of the Bento 3 database app; Filemaker is offering a 30-day trial copy to test out the kit, and the software retails for US$49 after that, or $99 for a family pack. It requires Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.5.7 and runs on both PPC and Intel machines.TUAWNew Bento templates aimed at students originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 25 May 2010 14:00:00 EST. Переслать - tChess Pro for iPad is very, very good
Filed under: iPad
I love to play chess and was looking for something that worked well on the iPad. The large screen and crisp graphics make board games on the iPad an attractive proposition.
Based on some reviews, I installed tChess Pro for US $7.99. I wasn't disappointed. While you can use the app to let two people play, I was more interested in playing against the computer. tChess Pro is a very strong opponent, but you can modify the levels that the game plays. It was the first time in a computer based chess game that I felt like I was playing a human, although at most levels except the lowest, I was getting clobbered.
The app allows you to set up games, add time controls, and there is an opening library mode that helps you understand the finer points of the game. You can take back moves, get a running analysis of your game, and get hints for the next move if you want them.

Переслать - Dazzboard syncs media in the browser, now supports Firefox and Chrome
Filed under: Internet Tools
It's an article of faith that Mac users prefer iPhones to other smartphones... right? But if we allow that there might be a cohort of Android users on the Mac (not to mention WinMobile and Windows Phone 7 aficionados), chances are they are going to be looking for some simple solutions to help with media and app management. Without iTunes support for these phones, anyone looking for a local sync tool for shared content between computer and phone is probably heading for a DoubleTwist install (still free to download and use, by the way).
At least, there wasn't another solid option besides DoubleTwist, until Dazzboard came along. The browser-based 'media webtop' has been available for Windows browsers for a while. It added Safari/Mac OS X compatibility a few weeks ago, and today we have an exclusive TUAW tidbit: support has been extended to both Firefox 3.6 and the Chrome beta on the Mac.
With the required plugin installed, the Dazzboard site allows you to easily drag and drop media and applications onto scores of phones; in fact, it supports almost anything with a USB Mass Storage mode. The web tool lets you organize music, apps and images with all your non-iPhone devices, and provides one-click posting to social networks or other destinations if you feel like sharing.
You can see a demo of the Dazzboard interface here, and if you choose to sign up for the beta it's free of charge. While the smooth integration of the iTunes/iPhone ecosystem may be a pipe dream, with Dazzboard at least your other devices have a fighting chance for sync savvy.

Переслать - International Apple Stores to open early on Friday, iBooks appears and gone again
Filed under: iPad
Apple Stores in the UK, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, Switzerland, Spain, and Italy will open one hour early at 8:00 AM local time this Friday as the iPad officially goes on sale. Delays and high demand could result in long queues for customers, so arrive early and wear comfortable shoes.
It's also noteworthy that iBooks and the iBookstore has begun to go live in these countries (that's a screenshot from the UK at right). Until now, users have been able to access the iBooks app (but not the store) with a US iTunes account; such circumvention is no longer necessary. Update: Readers report that iBooks was in the store, but is gone again!

Переслать - iPad as desktop status monitor
Filed under: iPad
Imagine this: you put your iPad into its dock next to your desktop (or laptop), and it transforms into a heads-up display of all the important stats from your machine. Maybe add some news and weather, and your "Today" list from your favorite to-do app. I'm sure there are a good number of people who could care less about this kind of thing, but ever since I saw Steve's post on Air Display, I started pondering the possibilities. This is my proof-of-concept. See the gallery for less-blurry images of the results.
I set up ScreenRecycler on my MacBook Pro and used iTeleport to turn my iPad into a third monitor. That part was easy enough, and I found a few screen resolutions that work pretty well. Next, I opened up GeekTool 3 and duplicated a few of my Geeklets (little widgets that run shell commands and scripts to print data onto your desktop). These were dragged to the iPad to create a workable display configuration, including:
- Time and date
- Calendar for the month with current day highlighted
- Current weather (with icon)
- Heaviest processes by memory and CPU usage
- 5-minute average system load
- Some uptime and memory stats.
I'll tell you outright that I don't recommend trying this, at least not using currently-available tools. GeekTool is strange enough about dragging Geeklets around, you don't want to try it on a network-attached monitor with a terrible refresh rate. It's downright painful. For you, dear TUAW reader, I persevere.
When it's all said and done, the iStat iPhone app starts looking pretty darn good on the iPad. What I want to see, though, is a dedicated app come out with configurable modules. It doesn't need to be as flexible as GeekTool, and I really would rather not have it run as an additional monitor. I'd just love to see something similar to iStat, but with more customizability and an iPad-optimized display. A build-your-own HUD, if you will. Have at it, intrepid iPad developers.

This little list of factoids from last fall's Survey of the American Consumer is pretty interesting. It runs down a few of the things that iPhone owners are more likely to do than the average American. Some of them are obvious (iPhone owners are more likely to make calls over the Internet, see their phone as entertainment, or even pay a subscription to watch live TV on the device), but did you know that iPhone owners are even more likely to own an elliptical trainer or be snowboarders? In fact, they're 282% more likely than the average American to order a product from Zappos.
Maybe they just wanted to save money. At any rate, these stats are really more of a novelty. We already know that most iPhone and Apple product users tend to be male, older, and affluent; it's not surprising that pastimes and activities that also appeal to that segment are popular among iPhone owners.
In the end, the most interesting stat may be the last one: iPhone owners are 52% more likely than other people to want to "wow" others with their devices. We know that iPhone owners have more money and more resources than others, but I'm interested to know more about just how vain we are and how Apple cultivates its own image to target that audience.TUAWConsumer survey says iPhone owners more likely to shop online, go snowboarding originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 25 May 2010 10:30:00 EST. Filed under: iPad
Just two days after Apple began accepting pre-orders for iPad from the UK, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, Switzerland, Spain, and Italy on May 10th, they changed the ship date from May 28th to June 7th. Those who ordered on the 10th or 11th could expect their iPads to arrive on May 28th. The rest would have to wait until June 7th. Today, it looks like that date has changed again.
A quick glance at several international online Apple Stores (Canada and the UK for example) reveals that "June 7th" has been changed to simply "June." Shortages in the US have been regularly reported over the last week, perhaps as supplies are diverted to international customers. Even so, it appears that Apple is having trouble keeping up.
Meanwhile, we're hearing from eager customers all over Europe and Canada (who ordered early) that their shipping notifications have been triggered. Some Italian buyers apparently already have their iPad in hand. Also, the iBooks app is now reportedly appearing in the UK iTunes App Store.

Theseus isn't for everyone -- it's a little slower-paced and more thoughtful than a lot of apps in the store, and the puzzles included get hard fast. But if you're looking for a challenge and a little bit of brain-teasing on your iPhone, Theseus will provide just that. It's a puzzle game based on the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. You control Theseus, represented by blue dot on a series of mazes. Your job is to try and get away from the Minotaur, the red dot, and make it to the exit on each screen.
The catch? You only get to move one square each turn, while the Minotaur gets to move two. But he will always try to move toward you, so with a little clever planning, there's always a way to evade him and escape the Labyrinth. That can be fiendishly tough, but the game is solidly built, with a whole slew of ways to undo and reset the game if you run into problems. Trial and error can get you far, and if you get too frustrated, there's a hint button that will help you get through the game's over 80 levels. There's a free version to try out, and if you enjoy figuring out ways to get around the Minotaur, Theseus is on the App Store for US$1.99.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Theseus originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 25 May 2010 09:00:00 EST. Here's another juicy iPhone rumor. Engadget reports that American Beauty director Sam Mendes will be shooting the next batch of Apple ads, and at least one will feature video chat.

In addition, Engadget paraphrases "a trusted source" by saying that at least one ad will feature a mother and daughter talking via video chat with their iPhones, giving further credence to the front-facing camera that appeared in the prototypes that Gizmodo and Tinhte recently showed off.

Update: Engadget also points out that Walmart is now selling the iPhone 3GS for $97, a sure inventory-clearing move.
According to Boy Genius Report, the iPhone 3G is very likely to be discontinued. Apple has reportedly stopped supplying AT&T stores with the 8 GB iPhone 3G. Additionally, the Australian online Apple Store lists the iPhone 3G as "currently unavailable," and UK carrier O2 has altered its ordering options in a way that makes it impossible to purchase the low-end iPhone.
It's not at all shocking that the iPhone 3G is most likely about to be discontinued. The two-year-old hardware is relatively anemic even compared to its successor, the 3GS. Because of its lower RAM and CPU speed, the iPhone 3G won't enjoy all the benefits of iPhone OS 4.0, particularly multitasking. Переслать - iTunes share of the US music market swells to 26.7%
Filed under: iTunes
Apple's iTunes music service has strengthened its lead in the US music market, growing to a whopping 26.7% of all music sold in the States, up from 21% a few years ago and 12% in 2007. That's pretty phenomenal growth, buoyed almost certainly by the rising share of digital music versus brick and mortar stores. Digital purchases make up 35.5% of music bought here, also up from 31% the last time Billboard released stats.
So where are all of these music purchases coming from? Best Buy and Walmart, apparently -- both retail outlets saw their shares drop by a few percentage points recently. And of course these are all percentages. I'd bet that lower music sales overall combined with growing sales on iTunes is helping to grow Apple's share quite a bit. At any rate, while hardware sales are getting the press, let's not forget that iTunes is still a big earner for Apple.

Much like Captain Ahab, Taiwanese Apple fan site tw.apple.pro is in pursuit of something elusive and white. They've posted pictures of what they claim to be the 4G iPhone with white casing on the back and front. Last week, the same site posted side-by-side photos of black and white faceplates supposedly meant for the new iPhone.
I know it's a matter of aesthetics, but I prefer the iPhone with the black faceplace (speaking as a guy with a white 3GS). The photo looks legit, so we're not doubting it, though the home button looks seriously recessed. Perhaps there's a case or layer of plastic on top of it, or maybe a shadow is playing tricks.
In any case, it looks like there will be an all-white iPhone 4G. So there you go.

Переслать - iPhone rumor du jour: Sprint-powered this summer
Filed under: iPhone
Likely rumor or an AT&T customer's wishful thinking? The rumor that won't die is the end of AT&T's iPhone exclusivity in the US. We've heard the name "Verizon" bandied about, but this time it's Sprint's turn.
According to The Tech Update, a Best Buy employee sent their editors an email that CONFIRMS (in all caps no less, so it must be true) that Sprint will carry the iPhone this summer. He also expects in-store displays to confirm the change within "...a week or two." From the email:
"...our mobile manager speculates that Apple wanted to drop AT&T due to their poor service but managed to opt-out of the rest of their contract in exchange for the iPad service deal."
The "evidence" in this case points to an email which could have come from any old schmoe, really. The fact is none of us know what will happen with the iPhone in the US. Here's what we can assume: First, Apple entered into a contract with AT&T. Eventually, that contract will end and when it does, both parties will assess their experience. At that time, a change may or may not be made. For all we know, we'll be sending iSmoke signals in July.

Переслать - My weekend Windows experience, or why I love Apple so much
Filed under: Humor
I'm really happy that Apple is once again talking about why people will love the Mac when they finally escape from Windows. I had an experience over the last few days that reinforced my love affair with the Mac. Since many of you are also Mac fanatics, I thought you'd love to hear the step-by-step, agonizing situation I endured.
All I wanted to do was install a Wi-Fi remote-controlled webcam. Nothing spectacular. I had looked at a number of webcams on Amazon.com before settling on a rather inexpensive Chinese-made device. According to the vendor, the camera was "Apple Mac and Windows compatible," so I ordered it. It arrived quickly, and a glance at the manual revealed that I would need to use Windows to set up the camera prior to using it with an "Apple Mac." Since I always keep a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate running under VMWare Fusion for such emergencies, I felt this would be a quick process.
Yeah, right.
Fortunately for you, I've documented the installation procedure for posterity. Now you can enjoy my own personal vision of Hell. Переслать - ETVComskip and PyeTV are great add-ons for EyeTV
Filed under: Software
As Erica mentioned earlier, Elgato's EyeTV hardware/software bundles will let you record your TV programming, either over the air or via your cable/satellite box depending on the exact product and setup you have. The latest hardware from the company is the EyeTV HD, which will capture HD video off of any source with component outputs. EyeTV also works well with third-party hardware from Plextor, Hauppauge and other tuner manufacturers. I've been happily using the EyeTV software for a few years now.
For me, an essential part of the EyeTV experience is the addition of a free plugin called ETVComskip, a "com"merical "skip" program ported from comskip.
After EyeTV finishes recording a TV show, ETVComskip automatically scans through the file looking for commercial breaks, and it marks them. The image above is the finale of LOST with the commercial breaks marked. ETVComskip successfully marked all of the commercial breaks (and there were a lot of them!) although I did go through and adjust some of the start/end times. Having them automatically marked, even if you have to do some manual adjustment, is a huge time saver. You can then export the video from EyeTV and the commercials will be automatically removed.
If you want to watch the shows you have recorded in EyeTV right on your Mac, you can install PyeTV which will integrate EyeTV with Front Row. When EyeTV shows are played back through Front Row, commercials will also be automatically skipped.

Переслать - Agile Web Solutions takes over development of Knox
Filed under: Software
Years ago I started using Knox for securing files, folders and drives. It's an easy and very secure way to keep your private files private. This week, long-time developers Marko Karppinen & Co. handed it over to Agile Web Solutions. As Agile is behind the popular 1Password, I think it was a great choice.
In fact, the two utilities work well together: Knox protects your files while 1Password protects your passwords. Knox employs the US Government's Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with 256-bit or 128-bit key length. What that means is that your stuff is safe from the cranky teenager down the block as well as hostile nations. I've used it to secure USB flash drives, as they're so easy to misplace.
Version 2 is available here. It's a useful application that's in good hands at Agile. A 30-day free trial is available, and a single license will run you US$34.95.TUAWAgile Web Solutions takes over development of Knox originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 24 May 2010 13:00:00 EST.
