- We Rule content update, server fixes incoming
Filed under: Gaming, iPhone, iPad
Ngmoco CEO Neil Young posted another update last week about We Rule. That game is probably the biggest hit Ngmoco has come across yet with its freemium model, but unfortunately, the title has been plagued with service outages since the release. Young says that they simply underestimated the amount of people who want to play the game, and that they're working as quickly as possible to scale the server infrastructure on both the We Rule and Plus+ systems. The game is free-to-play, but in-game purchases still seem to be doing well for the company, as the app currently sits at number 40 on the Top Grossing list in the App Store, above a few $0.99 apps and even much more expensive fare.
Young says the company is also pushing out content updates for the game -- there are new crops to grow and new buildings to buy and build on the farms. I'm playing We Rule (if a little reluctantly), and it seems like Ngmoco is playing around with the variations on crops and reward times -- some crops seem designed to bring people back to the app in as quickly as a few hours, while some promise a large reward daily (as if they're trying to at least drive people back in every day). I've experienced a few more bugs as well, like not seeing any of my friends' kingdoms on the main screen.
Despite the bugs and the issues, it certainly seems like people are playing (and paying), and clearly Ngmoco is dedicated to support and producing content (Young says they're planning more updates for players who've reached level 25 already). Other freemium games like Godfinger haven't quite taken off as quickly, but as a flagship title for Ngmoco and a learning experience for their future releases, We Rule seems to be working well.TUAWWe Rule content update, server fixes incoming originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 03 May 2010 21:00:00 EST. Darn it, my iPhone keeps re-installing my deleted apps every time I sync. Do you know how to make this stop happening? Is my iPhone possessed? I know I'm not alone. This is happening to other people too. Help!

Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - iPhone 3G - iTunes - IPhoneПереслать - iPad pulls Fraser Speirs back in to iPhone OS development
Filed under: App Store
When I saw Mac developer Fraser Speirs' Twitter post linking to a blog entry titled "Back In" I knew what it was about: the App Store.
Back in September 2008, Fraser announced he was ceasing new iPhone OS development in a widely-linked post titled "App Store: I'm out".
Fraser wasn't the first or last to announce that he was giving up on the App Store, but he is the first that I'm aware of who has come back. Why? Because to ignore the iPhone OS is to risk missing too many potential new customers. He says that he hasn't seen any comparable alternatives to the iPhone platform, and with the arrival of the iPad, Apple's mobile device platform is the place to be. "I have to ask myself if there's a train that I would rather be on," says Speirs. "I don't see one right now, and I don't see one coming down the track."

Переслать - Flickr Find: iPad in a Macintosh

OK, true, it's not very functional. Unfortunately part of the screen gets cut off, portability goes out the window, and it doesn't make your iPad look any sleeker or cleaner. All that aside, using the original Macintosh as an iPad stand is the kind of Apple craziness that we at TUAW just can't ignore. It's not entirely clear how
Here's a thought: just get yourself an aquarium app, configure it to show on the iPad's screen correctly, and you've got a no-water-or-fish required Macquarium. Meanwhile, mapgoblin is off finding out where else the iPad will fit.

When you look at VNC clients for the iPad, there are really two uses you have to take into account. First, can the software connect locally, allowing you to screen share your desktop computer? Second, can it connect remotely, providing off-site access to your computer? With these two issues in mind, TUAW recently took a look at several iPad VNC clients. Read on to discover how they stood up to real world testing.

Переслать - World of Warcraft streaming to an iPad
Filed under: iPad
For years I've wanted a decent World of Warcraft (WoW) iPhone app from Blizzard. There's an armory app that lets you browse your gear and so forth, but that's not enough. I'd like to track auctions, access in-game email, visit the bank and so on.
All of that went out the window when I saw this.
It's a screenshot of WoW supposedly being streamed to an iPad via Gaikai. Gaikai is a new service, currently in beta, that hosts and streams any game to your computer via a browser. Basically, you play a game that lives on their servers while watching a streaming video of the action. Their website says that "...the latest Adobe Flash player" is required, so we're not sure how this is being pulled off. Perhaps they're using an unreleased app.
More importantly is the question, how in the world are you going to play WoW without a mouse? We second Gizmodo's call for video on this one.TUAWWorld of Warcraft streaming to an iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 03 May 2010 14:00:00 EST. Переслать - Microsoft embracing HTML5 / H.264 for IE 9
Filed under: Internet Tools
Shortly after Steve Jobs delivered his "Thoughts on Flash" missive to the world last week, Microsoft's general manager for the Internet Explorer browser mentioned that the huge software company is putting its muscle behind the H.264 standard for HTML5 video content. Apple, of course, has been promoting the H.264 standard for video content in HTML5 as a replacement for Flash-based video content.
Dean Hachamovitch, general manager for Internet Explorer, stated last week in a blog posting that the "future of the web is HTML5." He noted that the HTML5 specification does not specify a particular format, and that "H.264 is an excellent format." The bottom line? "In its HTML5 support, IE9 will support playback of H.264 video only." Hachamovitch followed up on his original post today with a much more complete explanation of Microsoft's reasoning for selecting the H.264 codec over competing emerging standards.
The comments from Hachamovitch also noted that most web video is currently Flash-based, and although Microsoft and Adobe are working together on Flash, there are issues with security, performance, and reliability with Adobe's player.
It appears that Microsoft is planning for a future that is less dominated by Adobe Flash, and one that is more in line with the standards-based approach that Jobs and Apple are embracing.

Microsoft - Internet Explorer - Adobe Flash - Steve Jobs - AppleПереслать - Apple spurs an antitrust investigation
Filed under: Apple
According to the New York Post, The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are negotiating which of them will launch an inquiry into a clause in the iPhone OS 4 SDK that bans the porting of software originally written for Adobe's Flash, Sun's Java or Microsoft's Silverlight/Mono to the iPhone OS.
The issue at hand is this: Does the restriction kill competition by forcing developers to create applications that only run on Apple's devices rather than work with other operating systems and hardware like those from Google and RIM?
Adobe had been working on a feature in Creative Suite 5 that would allow Flash applications to be ported to the iPhone. Under this rule, those apps would be rejected.
This comes days after Apple published an essay from Steve Jobs explaining why his company's devices do not support Flash. In the essay, Steve said that Flash "...is no longer necessary to watch video or consume any kind of web content."
Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen responded in an exclusive interview with The Wall Street Journal, saying that Apple's adherence to a single platform is a detriment. He concludes that Adobe's concept is best for most developers, as it allows them to distribute apps out to many places rather than forcing them to pick one. Narayen then warned developers against the "cumbersome" nature of having two workflows, one for Apple and one for everything else, while Jobs suggested that Adobe abandon Flash and adopt open web standards like HTML5.
Note that launching an inquiry does not mean the beginning of formal proceedings. Inquiries are conducted to determine if formal action should be taken. In any case, this won't be settled quickly or simply.

iPhone - Steve Jobs - Apple - Microsoft - GoogleПереслать - Use mailsend to send email from the Terminal
Filed under: UNIX / BSD
Update: I highly recommend waiting until a followup article on msmtp is posted, which is both easier and better than mailsend.
There are times that I want my iMac to be able to email me: when certain scripts run via cron or launchd, when certain events happen (a backup has been completed), etc. I've found that none of the included command-line programs work. The good news is that, with a UNIX foundation, it was fairly easy to find a free program which would do just that.
A little searching turned up a free program called mailsend, which will work. For this example I will be using a Gmail account, which requires OpenSSL. Your mail server may not require OpenSSL support, but if it's possible, I encourage you to use it.
The short version of the instructions are as follows:
1) Download and install OpenSSL to /usr/local/ssl/
2) Download and install mailsend to somewhere in your path such as /usr/local/bin/
3) Use mailsend -h to learn how to use it on the commandline
4) (Optional) Use TextExpander 3 to fill in some of the variable fields, such as To, Subject, and Message.
Read on for more of a step by step walk-through.TUAWUse mailsend to send email from the Terminal originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 03 May 2010 11:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Unofficial Apple Weblog - Message transfer agent - Gmail - Unix - TextExpanderПереслать - Apple sells one millionth iPad
Filed under: Apple Corporate, iPad
Apple announced today that on Friday the one millionth iPad was sold. The figure does not break out Wi-Fi vs. 3G iPads, yet the number is still staggering considering it only took 28 days. For the original iPhone, the million unit milestone was not hit until 74 days after release.
Apple also announced that iPad users had purchased 12 million apps and 1.5 million eBooks from its fledgling store. Friday was the release of the iPad 3G in the US; it's likely that this was the source of the final push that got Apple to the millionth unit. Those first-year sales projections from analysts are beginning to look a little conservative.
Although Apple has not provided any details on which iPad models make up that million-unit total, a very conservative assumption of a $550 average selling price (weighting heavily towards the cheapest 16GB Wi-Fi model) means the iPad has generated well over half a billion dollars in revenue already.

Within a few hours of its release the iPad had already been jailbroken and video proof released. The Dev-Team with @comex have released the first "userland" jailbreak for iPhone OS devices since the initial year of the iPhone's release.
The current jailbreak, dubbed "Spirit," allows you to jailbreak all models of iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch running the latest firmwares available (3.2 and 3.1.3, respectively, as of this writing).
Also, the authors note that "On iPad, all this is still sort of beta," and as such if anything goes wrong you might need to restore.

iPhone - IPad - Jailbreak - Apple - IPod TouchПереслать - iPad use case: Foodie
Filed under: iPad
Over the past few weeks, we've heard many people say, "The iPad is cool, but what would I do with it?" This new series aims to answer that question. We'll examine one user case per post, from couch surfer to mobile professional, and describe just how that person uses his or her iPad.
I love food. In fact, I probably love it too much. Part of the problem is that I was a ovo-lacto vegetarian for 17 years and a pesco-vegetarian for 5 years after that. Now, I want to eat all of those things that were "forbidden fruit" for 22 years, and it has really made me appreciate good food.
Being a foodie isn't just about eating food, however. It's also about having the skill and desire to cook food. Yeah, that means being a wannabe gourmet chef. And there's one more piece to the foodie puzzle - beverages. I mean, what's the use of being able to whip up a killer bison chili without knowing what wine or beer would go best with it?
What I've found is that the iPad is a much better foodie-puter than either a MacBook or an iPhone. I can turn off screen dimming, twist the Apple iPad Case around so that the iPad is standing straight up, and see recipes from across the kitchen. Even with the screen at regular brightness, I don't have to worry about my battery getting chewed up while I'm working on a time-consuming dinner. Want to know what apps I'm using to feed my foodie jones? Read on...TUAWiPad use case: Foodie originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 03 May 2010 09:00:00 EST. If you're not one of the many who have discovered Bird Strike yet, then you're in luck. The game just got a solid update, with new levels, new power-ups, and OpenFeint integration. The game is almost like Doodle Jump but I actually enjoyed it a little more. You play a bird that is constantly trying to fly higher and higher with the help of rockets and various tools. The graphics are clean and fun, and it's actually a little more forgiving than some of the Doodle Jump-style games that I've played.
The game was free for a little while and is now back up to US$0.99. Even at that price, though, it's an easy buy. Lots and lots of people have already gotten a chance to play the game, because it's hit nearly every spot on the charts already. However, if you've waited to check it out, now's the time to do it.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Bird Strike originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 03 May 2010 08:00:00 EST.
