- Report: Apple developing exclusive iTunes purchase tracking for iAds
Filed under: App Store
TechCrunch has the word that Apple may be implementing a "VIP" ad program within its upcoming iAd service. An email reportedly sent from a Quattro sales representative mentions a "Verification of iTunes Purchase" program, in which an advertiser for a certain app would be able to see his or her users' iTunes purchases, and deliver ads based on that information. Quattro is the mobile ad company purchased by Apple a while back, and presumably the division overseeing iAds.
That verification process would allow app creators to not only know which of their customers has already bought other apps of theirs, but it would enable them to only show you ads for apps you haven't yet purchased. In Flick Baseball Pro, for example, you wouldn't see ads for Flick Fishing if you'd already bought it from the store.
That might give Apple the advantage against other ad programs on the App Store, and even if not, it would let them charge a premium price. Since everyone else is guessing at iTunes sales data, Apple would actually be able to deliver real numbers for iTunes purchases, and help app developers target app ads.TUAWReport: Apple developing exclusive iTunes purchase tracking for iAds originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 06 May 2010 17:30:00 EST. Переслать - Eight ways the iPad pwns the iPhone
Filed under: iPad
When Steve Jobs introduced the iPad in January, he talked about defining its niche. He explained that the iPad sits somewhere between an iPhone and a laptop and is meant for the same kind of use that is currently served by netbooks.
Despite that, we have been exposed to a lot of buzz about the iPad being nothing more than an oversized iPod touch. And although the hardware is, essentially, just that -- a bigger version of the touch, running the same apps from the same App Store -- there's more to it than that simplified explanation.
Yesterday, TUAW explored eight use cases wherein the iPhone provides a better solution than the iPad, examining the iPhone-specific niche and situations where the iPhone took first place in usability. Today, we're turning that comparison on its head. Of course, there are situations for which the iPad is better suited than the iPhone. Here is our incomplete list of how the iPad outshines its sibling.

Переслать - iPad could produce the quickest climb to the $1B mark
Filed under: iPad
Yesterday, we reported on an incredible statistic: If iPad sales continue at the current rate through the end of June, Apple could realize US$1 billion in revenue. Today, Yankee Group's Carl Howe puts that number into perspective, noting that the iPad "...will likely take the crown for the fastest consumer product growth to the $1 billion revenue mark in history." That is, of course, if current sales trends continue.
If it happens, it will have taken place in less than 120 days. Howe compares the iPad's meteoric rise to the revenue arc of Google. As a company that's barely over 10 years old, Google produced one of the fastest growths to $1 billion in revenue and the fastest growth to a market valuation greater than $1 billion.
It's also important to note that these iPad numbers account for US sales only. Once international sales begin, Apple should really blow the roof off of this thing.TUAWiPad could produce the quickest climb to the $1B mark originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 06 May 2010 16:00:00 EST. Переслать - From iPhone to iPad: Star Walk
Filed under: iPad
How do old iPhone favorites hold up on the iPad? In our From iPhone to iPad series, TUAW revisits iPhone applications that have transitioned to the iPad. We look at their latest incarnations and see how the new measures up to the old. Today, TUAW looks at Star Walk.
I first encountered Star Walk last summer at an O'Reilly Foo Camp meet-up. "You want to see an app that really takes advantage of everything a 3GS can do?" asked one of the attendees. "Try Star Walk." I dutifully scribbled down the name and, when I returned home, I picked up a copy at the App Store.
True to the advice, Star Walk really impressed. It's a kind of "virtual window" application that you use at night. You look "through" the 3GS to the sky behind it and see a live view of the constellations the 3GS is pointing at. Move the 3GS down out of your field of view, and you see the real night sky. Move the 3GS back in front of you and it explains exactly what you're looking at.
That's because Star Walk was one of the first applications that took advantage of the iPhone 3GS's built in magnetometer. The sensor that powers the onboard compass allows apps to retrieve magnetic north readings. Star Walk uses the magnetometer to determine which way you're looking -- not just your position. And it uses that bearing information to display the correct portion of the night sky.TUAWFrom iPhone to iPad: Star Walk originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 06 May 2010 15:00:00 EST. Переслать - Apple's biometric heartbeat patent: And the beat goes on
Filed under: Apple Corporate
The US Patent and Trademark Office has posted information about a really interesting patent that Apple applied for in January. Patent application 20100113950 describes a new technology that would bring a heart monitoring biometric security system to electronic devices. Biometrics are nothing new. These technologies are being currently used to recognize fingerprints, eye scans, and sometimes voice. This is the first time it's being done as an EKG, measuring electrical activity in the heart.
The patent allows for building monitoring sensors into a case, screen or even earbuds. Depending upon the method used, when someone holds the device or swipes a finger across the screen to unlock, embedded leads will read the EKG information and allow the device to perform actions based upon result. A built in EKG has far-reaching medical potential, but the patent deals mostly with issues of authentication. Different profiles can be saved on the device, similar to having multiple user accounts on a computer. This would allow multiple people with different profiles to be accurately authenticated and provide differing device capabilities. Uses can include anything from preventing children from using certain apps, to allowing the proper user access to online banking and other financial transactions. It can also be used to save different user information that's embedded in apps allowing a great deal of personalization such as one device keeping individual Dropbox information, allowing the proper Dropbox to be accessed by the person holding the device.

Переслать - Did AT&T provide cheap iPad data rates to keep iPhone exclusivity?
In a country seemingly obsessed with the question "When is Verizon going to get the iPhone?," it's surprising that AT&T's exclusive iPhone deal with Apple has lasted this long. A post in Computerworld today quotes Wall Street analyst Brian Marshall of BroadPoint AmTech, who believes that AT&T squeezed another 6 months of exclusive iPhone rights out of Apple by agreeing to provide iPad users with 3G data plans at 50% of their normal cost.
Marshall and many other analysts expected AT&T's iPhone monopoly to end this summer, but now agree that it will be at least the first quarter of 2011 before Verizon gets a chance to sell the hot Apple smartphone. Many sources had told Marshall that Verizon would land the iPad data plan deal, something that of course did not happen. AT&T offered no-contract, cut-rate deals on data plans for the iPad, and that unprecedented step got Marshall thinking about an AT&T / Apple deal.
AT&T and Apple have not replied to requests for comments on the alleged deal.

ClamCase can act as a generic case, an iPad stand, or you can use the keyboard for mobile computing. The one drawback, based on the video, is that you can't use the keyboard in portrait mode. The other night I needed to change Wi-Fi networks on a computer that I was connected to via ssh. Just about every page that I found via Google led me to try the exact same thing (type "airport -A") with one minor problem: it didn't work.
Let's back up a little bit. You may know that there is a commandline tool called "airport" which is buried fairly deeply in the filesystem:
System » Library » PrivateFrameworks » Apple80211.framework » Versions » Current » Resources » airport
Not the usual place to find a commandline utility. Translation? "This is here for Apple to use, but it's not something you ought to rely on." But of course that's not going to stop us.

Unofficial Apple Weblog - Google - Apple - Command-line interface - Mac OS X Snow LeopardПереслать - Buying an iPad, one month later
Filed under: iPad
On Tuesday, I finally joined the ranks of iPad owners. It was a relatively smooth experience, but there are some things that caught my eye:
If you want certain models, you're going to have to wait. The Apple Store at Chandler Fashion Center only had the 64GB Wi-Fi model while the Biltmore Apple Store had 16GB and 64GB Wi-Fi models. Since I only wanted the 16GB model, I walked away a happy customer. But, if you want a 32GB Wi-Fi or any of the 3G models, you're pretty much out of luck.
If in doubt, though, call ahead if you can. If you make a spur-of-the-moment decision and your store is out, see if the Apple Store you're at can call another location and check on their stock. Of course, this method only works when you live in an area that's lucky enough to have more than one Apple Store. Independent resellers or Best Buy stores are also worth a try.

MyTown is one of the hottest things going on the App Store right now in terms of social apps. As we mentioned in the interview with CEO Keith Lee a while back, they've actually got more users than Foursquare. The company has just released version 3.1 of the app, which introduces more collectible rewards earned by checking-in to certain local, real life locations (which you can then use to customize the properties you "own"), as well as more social features. You can now browse through the top trending properties, see your most frequent check-ins, and browse through where your friends are going out to and checking-in from.
Additionally, Booyah tells us that the app is growing by over 100,000 players each week. They're suggesting that the average player of the game spends "more than an hour a day within the app." That's kind of incredible, but if it's true, that's one heck of an attachment rate. In fact, those are exactly the kind of usage stats that Ngmoco's Neil Young would drool over. Considering that MyTown just made an appearance in Ngmoco's We Rule splash screen, odds are that the two companies are at least sharing notes and, at most, possibly primed for a partnership. We'll have to wait and see what happens.TUAWMyTown updates to version 3.1, adds collectibles and social features originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 06 May 2010 09:00:00 EST. AppStore - MyTown - IPhone - Keith Lee - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - TUAW's Daily App: John Enock's Quaso
Filed under: iPhone
We've been spotlighting a lot of quick and easy action games in our Daily App feature lately, so here's something a little more cerebral. Quaso is a new kind of Crossword-style puzzle game, except that instead of guessing words, you're trying to figure out numbers in math equations. The game was created by an English mathematics teacher named John Enock, and has been brought to the iPhone by a developer as John Enock's Quaso, now available on the App Store for free.
Here's how it works. For every crossword line on the board, you're given a set of math equations with the numbers missing. There's one total number for every puzzle (say, 6), and then for each equation, you need to figure out how another set of numbers fits in to complete the clue and make the equation equal to the total number. In other words, given the clue (*+*) x (*-*), and the answer of 6, you'd eventually work out that the numbers should be (1+2) x (5-3), and then put 1, 2, 5, and 3 in each spot on the answer. But that answer line has to match up to any that it intersects with, so you may need to switch the numbers around -- (2+1) instead of (1+2) -- for it all to work.
It's fiendishly clever, and it really puts your brain to work, especially if (like me) you're not that great at casual math. But there are a ton of puzzles to work through, and then you can even buy a puzzle pack via in-app purchase for more. Especially at the current price of free, Quaso is a mathematical brain teaser that you shouldn't miss.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: John Enock's Quaso originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 06 May 2010 08:00:00 EST. AppStore - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Washington DC - Fruit - Fruit NinjaПереслать - Found footage: Android tablet prototype running (and crashing) Flash
Filed under: Found Footage, iPad
Adobe is showing off Android-based prototype tablets at the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco. Zedomax has a pretty gushing review of Flash's performance on these tablets, calling it "rather incredible technology." There's no mention of how the battery life in these prototype tablets suffers while playing Flash video, though. In his "Thoughts on Flash," Steve Jobs noted that using Flash on the iPhone effectively halves its battery life.
What's far more interesting, and far more hilarious, is that although Zedomax claims Flash works "flawlessly" on these tablets, there's certainly evidence to the contrary. In the video above, the Android tablet reviewer is showing off the Flash functionality. Just as he says, "Good thing I didn't buy an iPad, because this one does Flash," the browser crashes. "Whoops," the reviewer says, gamely trying to carry on with his review in spite of the crash. [Never mind that he's demoing Flash by playing a YouTube video, which of course the iPad does just as well. -Ed.]
As an interesting side note, the same reviewer says that these Android tablets are "basically a giant Android phone." So, if you hate the iPad because "it's just a big iPod touch," please remember that, in the interest of not sounding like a fanboy, you are obligated to hate the Android tablet (whenever it actually gets released) for the same reason.

If you want a preview of how this nonsensical antitrust investigation against Apple is going to play out, look no farther than Robert Reich, US Secretary of Labor during the Clinton administration. Reich has written in defense of Apple regarding the possibly forthcoming antitrust investigations. He notes that the investigations are taking place because of Apple's disallowing of third-party programming tools like Flash CS5 when writing apps for the iPhone. "What's wrong with that?" Reich asks. "Apple says it's necessary to maintain quality. If consumers disagree they can buy platforms elsewhere."
An expert in US labor law, who was once the secretary in charge of labor policy in the US, sees no problem with Apple's practices regarding development for its platform. Case closed, Adobe. Thanks for playing.

If you're in the market for an Apple prototype but don't have $5,000 to spend, consider Ebay. This week an Apple Interactive Television Box (AITB) showed up, and quickly sold for less than fifty bucks.
Built between 1994 and 1995, the AiTB was meant to act as a sort of liaison between the consumer and an interactive television service. In practice, the user would select what s/he wanted to see with a remote. The AITB would then pass those choices on to a central server which provided the content. We assume Apple had a subscription model planned. You can view the manual here (PDF).
Units exist in various states of completion, from non-functioning units with an ill-fitting case to near production models with FCC stickers. Even these won't boot, however, and the remote controls are especially difficult to find.
The unit that recently sold on Ebay looks fairly complete. This is a nice piece that any collector would like to have. And you needn't visit a German bar to get it.

Переслать - AdAge doesn't like iAd's pricing scheme
Filed under: Apple
AdvertisingAge confirms today what the Wall Street Journal pointed out last week: advertising with Apple's iAd service won't be cheap. Most advertising agencies charge either a flat rate per thousand impressions (CPM) or a small amount each time a user clicks an ad (CPC). With iAd, Apple will do both.
Under Apple's arrangement, advertisers will pay US$10 per 1,000 impressions, $0.01 for each ad displayed, and $2 for each ad clicked.
By comparison, AdMob reportedly charges $10 to $15 CPM (on average). Customers opting into CPC campaigns will pay $0.15 to $0.30 per click. AdAge's Kunur Patel and Michael Learmont dislike Apple's deal, saying "Apple is reinventing mobile ad pricing, and not in a good way."
Fortune notes that Apple has not yet released an iAds developer's kit, meaning that customers will have to work with Apple when creating campaigns. Again, the price tag is high: Apple will charge $50,000 to $100,000 to agencies spending less than $1 million on iAd buys, according to agency executives.
In related news, Google is currently hoping to convince the FTC to allow its intended purchase of AdMob. They're using Apple's forthcoming iAds service as evidence of competition in the mobile advertising market.TUAWAdAge doesn't like iAd's pricing scheme originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 05 May 2010 18:00:00 EST. When you sign up, you're asked which Macs and Apple devices you own, and so far, those are the only qualifications. But if my potential lady friend owns an iMac, that should be good enough, right? I can already picture us, having a romantic dinner at some local Italian place, charming music playing in the background while we share a bottle of wine, talking quietly about our favorite customized Automator services. Переслать - Crush the Castle for iPhone free today only
Filed under: iPhone
I'm not much of a gamer but I adore Crush the Castle. It's a medieval themed game where you use a trebuchet to knock down your enemies who inhabit an increasingly difficult arrangement of fortifications. It's a good test of skill and your knowledge of the physics of heavy airborne objects.
Today only, the full featured game is free, and in Uncle Mel's view it is definitely worth grabbing. It's great for passing the time in an airport, and can help you conquer your daily build-up of frustrations. The sound effects are super, from the screams of your victims to the subtle environmental sounds that match the locale in which a particular round takes place.
My only regret is that there is not yet an iPad version, but it doesn't scale up too badly and is still fun to play. If you haven't played this game, I recommend trying it. If you have only been using the 'lite' version, here's a chance to upgrade at no cost.

Переслать - Italy's Justice Minister pulls out iPhone during talkshow to check law
Filed under: Apple
The count of heads of state who flaunt their iDevices continues to grow. This week, Italy's Justice Minister, Angelino Alfano, used an iPhone to reference an Italian law.
While speaking on a prime-time television show, Minister Alfano used his iPhone, clad in a patriotic case, to access the app Codici and Leggi (19,99 €) and quote verbatim an Italian law on wiretapping.
We've seen other political leaders using Apple gizmos recently. For instance, Russian President Dimitry Medvedev, Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and South Korea's minister of culture, tourism and sports, Yu In-chon, have all been seen with iPads (though Yu In-chon did not activate his, as they had not been cleared for wireless communication by the South Korean government at the time).
Here in the US, First Lady Michelle Obama recently used a borrowed iPhone to send her first tweet (with some difficulty). Over the years, we've seen Pope Benedict XVI and Britian's Queen Elizabeth II receive iPods. Next we'll be hearing that the Icelandic authorities tried to soothe the volcanic eruptions there by sacrificing an iPad.

Переслать - Adobe Captivate joins Mac family
Filed under: Software
Along with the release of the CS5 suite, Adobe is delivering a new product to the Mac platform; Captivate 5 is shipping next month, both in a standalone version and as the anchor of the new eLearning Suite 2 bundle alongside Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop Extended, Soundbooth and Acrobat. Captivate lets educators, trainers and documentation experts create tutorials and simulations that can be deployed to websites or learning management (LMS) infrastructure.
Captivate has had a long run as a Windows app, so the interface was completely refreshed for the Mac release. New features in v5 include full roundtrip support with other components of the suite, so you can edit sound clips in Soundbooth or animations in Flash and return to where you left off in the Captivate project. The new version also allows for better video synchronization within a project. The PowerPoint plugin piece of the eLearning suite (Adobe Presenter) remains Win-only.
You can learn more about Captivate via Adobe's prerecorded and upcoming live webcasts about the eLearning suite (Adobe account required). New licenses for the suite start at US$1799, with upgrades starting at $599. Captivate alone sells for $799 and can be upgraded starting at $299; cross-grades from the PC version to the Mac version should be allowed. Preorders are active now, and the suite is expected to ship in mid-June.
Thanks Rich!

Let's address his second point first: bwahahahahahaha. OK, I feel much better. As anyone who has used iDisk knows, iDisk is terrible in its current form. It's slow, it's easily corrupted, and it does not handle sync errors well.
I've been waiting for Apple to get MobileMe and especially iDisk in shape for years, and every year I ship off my $100 for MobileMe hoping that this will be the year. We are no closer to it than we were three years ago. Or five years ago. Sachin says that "the Finder hasn't been updated with anything sexy in years." That may be true, but the same thing can be said of Apple's use of "the cloud" through MobileMe.Read on for more thoughts...

- TUAW TV Live at 5 PM EDT Today: an all-Mac episode
Filed under: WIN Business
In all of the rush to cover news of the iPad and iPhone, we sometimes forget to look at the products that, until recently, were the bread and butter of Apple's financial existence -- Macs.
On today's episode of TUAW TV Live, your host Steve Sande is going to try to remedy that by spending at least one hour talking about nothing but Mac. Mac hardware, Mac peripherals, Mac software, even old Macs. We'll have some slick demos of Mac software favorites, talk about rumors of upcoming Mac hardware updates, and chat about our favorite (or least favorite) Macs from the past.
Join us today at 5 PM EDT (2 PM PDT) for our weekly live video chat. Drop by TUAW about 5 minutes before the scheduled start of the show, and you'll see a post with an embedded video stream player and chat box. If you'd prefer to just watch on your iPhone or iPad, we'll have links to those as well.TUAWTUAW TV Live at 5 PM EDT Today: an all-Mac episode originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 05 May 2010 14:00:00 EST. Переслать - Integrate SMS polling into Keynote with Poll Everywhere
Filed under: iWork
There's market prominence, and then there's sheer ubiquity. Even though it's been called a drain on our nation's military prowess, in the business world, you really can't get away from PowerPoint. Microsoft's presentation station within Office is a core participant in meetings large and small, and there's an enormous ecosystem of add-ons, plug-ins, and collaborative apps that extend the basic product.
Most of these enhancements are Windows-only affairs, and some of them are downright useful (I'm thinking of Articulate Studio in particular, which would be plain awesome on the Mac). If you want to do audience response measurement within a meeting, for instance -- letting attendees vote or answer questions on the fly -- you're pretty much locked in to displaying those results within PowerPoint. There's hope on the horizon for Keynote, though. The SMS-centric Poll Everywhere service, which allows an audience to quickly answer questions using their cellphones, has introduced beta support for Keynote and PowerPoint 2008 that gracefully displays the response percentages on multiple choice questions. You can try it out yourself with a free Poll Everywhere account; the unpaid plan allows you to collect up to 30 answers per poll, while paid plans go way higher. The tool requires Snow Leopard and Keynote '09 to work.
Instead of the embedded Flash SWF playback widget that Poll Everywhere uses to display results in PowerPoint 2003/07/10 on Windows, the Mac approach leverages a helper app and on-demand downloads of QuickTime movies to handle the answers. It's pretty sneaky, and pretty effective. If you need to collect feedback from a roomful of drowsy colleagues, try out these tools and see if things get spiced up a bit.

Переслать - Eight ways the iPhone pwns the iPad
Filed under: iPad
- Making phone calls. Yes, you can use line2 to convert your iPad into a quasi-phone that accepts incoming calls, or fire up the Skype app, but for real-world use, nothing beats a device that you can stick into your pocket and then forget about. It rings, you answer, you talk, you hang up. It's a lot easier to use an iPhone than an iPad to make phone calls.
- Grocery lists. I don't know if you've tried hauling around an iPad in your shopping cart at SuperTarget or Publix, but it doesn't work very well. It's the pocket size, again. The iPhone form factor provides a better match to tracking your chores with on-the-go use than the iPad can. Small wins for this one.

Переслать - Apple.com's Downloads page being updated again
Filed under: Software
There are signs of life at Apple's Download page. If you look at the list on the right Hot Plan 1.5.1, Screenflick 1.6.13, and Volumetrix 2.0.1 were all added on May 4th. Before that, Pasteboard Recorder was updated on March 26th.
If you look at the All Categories: Most Recent list, you will see almost two pages of apps were updated yesterday.
Apple redesigned the Apple.com website in early March, which included the removal of the downloads link from the home page. At first this seemed like just a redesign issue, but then Apple stopped updating the downloads page altogether.
Many developers wrote in to say that traffic had dropped off significantly after this happened. Others commented that they had always used the Apple download page to find new software.
So what happened during the hiatus? My guess is that even a company with Apple's financial resources occasionally hits limits. Given that Apple links to the downloads page on every Mac via the Apple Menu » Mac OS X Software... link in the menu bar, I couldn't imagine them abandoning it altogether. Glad to see it's back.
