- First look: SketchyPad mockup tool for web and app designers
Filed under: iPad
Part of my work involves making mockups of websites for clients, and up until this point the easiest way to do that was just to hand draw some sketches, scan them, send them to the client for rework, etc... Now there's a new iPad app from developer Nick Golovin that promises to make the creation of website and app mockups a lot easier.
SketchyPad (US$4.99) is an iPad app using a simple sketchpad metaphor and a lot of stencils to make mockups. It includes many of the design elements that are used in web design and app development. The app includes snap-to bluelines for aligning elements, the stencils can be locked in place with a lock icon, and there are tools for layering buttons and other elements on the page. When you're done with a sketch, it can be exported to your camera roll, emailed, or exported to Balsamiq Mockups for Desktop.

Since late last night, the Apple Store order status page has displayed the banner you see above. We're not sure what it means, but it's driving anyone who is trying to look up order status -- my wife, for instance -- crazy. You can still order anything you desire, you just can't find out what's happening with your order. Fortunately, the order status page is scheduled to be back up and running tomorrow, at which time we'll report on any changes that we happen to find.TUAWThe Apple Store isn't down, but order status is originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 15 May 2010 15:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPad
Here's an interesting stat -- 26% of the video on the Web is iPad-ready, according to Mefeedia, a firm that supposedly monitors online video around the Internet. You may think that's low (that means 74% of the web can't be seen on the iPad), but that number actually represents a good amount of growth, as just a scant few months ago, only 10% of Web video was iPad-accessible, or encoded in H.264 or HTML 5, not Flash.
Mefeedia also says that most new video is available in HTML 5 -- it's more or less the archives that haven't been converted over yet. The survey itself encompasses over 30,000 different sources, from partnered sites like Hulu, CBS, and ABC, as well as popular video sites like YouTube and DailyMotion. Mefeedia says it expects to "see a new level of engagement" with online video, and that when that surge of interest comes, it'll be supported by HTML 5. Adobe probably won't like hearing that, but then again, they've still got a big majority of the video, so we guess it's up to them to lose it.

Mefeedia - IPad - YouTube - Apple - Adobe SystemsПереслать - Apple is unconcerned with NPD's smartphone report
If Apple is losing any sleep over those recent smartphone numbers, it's not showing it. Their official response to the recent news that Android is selling more phones than iPhone OS could adequately be defined as: "meh." Spokeswoman Natalie Harrison says that the survey was "a very limited report," and that Apple is "far outselling Android on a worldwide basis." She goes on to say that "with our new iPhone OS 4.0 software coming this summer, we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon." Like I said: "meh."
It's notable that she does use iPod touch numbers in her calculations, and we're not quite sure if those belong in a survey of smartphones. But she does have a point -- Android may have won this battle, but Apple is still winning the war, and the fight is far from over. There is an interesting parallel here to OS X and Windows -- Apple's OS lives squarely on just a few official devices, while the Android system operates on third-party hardware over any number of platforms. It's certainly possible that Android could win on numbers, even while Apple "wins" on usability and quality. But market share has never been Apple's game, and you can't look at any of the money they've made lately and believe they've done anything but succeed.

Since Apple acquired Lala back in December, we've wondered what its developers would do with their new purchase. Rumors suggest we'll find out in a few weeks at WWDC. Macsimum news is reporting that a live streaming version of iTunes will debut at the conference.
Some have speculated that iTunes will move to a subscription model, but others don't see it that way. Michael Robertson, former CEO of mp3.com, believes that Apple will create an "online locker" of your iTunes purchases. Once you buy a song or show or movie, it's added to your online library for you to stream at will. That would be a great solution for users who currently have several space-hogging videos in their purchase history. Perhaps that's what the North Carolina facility is for.
Personally, I'd welcome such a service with open arms. Even now, I play "video shuffle" with my iDevices, moving TV shows and movies back and forth as room and my interests change. How nice would it be to pull up any episode of BSG on any approved device without having to make room for it first? Very nice indeed.TUAWRumor: iTunes online music streaming to debut at WWDC originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 14 May 2010 19:00:00 EST. Переслать - Full-featured Navigon MobileNavigator gets temporary price cut
Filed under: iPhone
Just in time for those summer vacations, Navigon has dropped the price of the full North American version to U.S. $49.99. That's a 30 dollar savings.
Of all the GPS apps I've tested, I found the Navigon app to be the most full-featured and accurate. The screen is very clear and it is easy to use the many features included. I especially like the display of speed limits, and the ability to get a warning if I go over. Text-to-speech is very clear, and local search, which uses Google, is very handy and keeps the points of interest information up to date.
You can also enhance the app with additional purchases of live traffic info, and a 3D panorama view that shows you the contours of the geography you are driving through.TUAWFull-featured Navigon MobileNavigator gets temporary price cut originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 14 May 2010 18:00:00 EST. Переслать - Judge unseals documents in Gizmodo case, finder offered extra $3500 and bonus for lost iPhone
Filed under: Apple
After multiple requests from media like Wired.com and the Los Angeles Times, a judge has unsealed the search warrant in the Gizmodo case. According to California law, search papers must be made public within 10 days of a search being completed, unless there are extenuating circumstances in the case.
In this one, the prosecutors were arguing that the identities (presumably of the Apple employee who originally lost the iPhone purchased by Gizmodo's editor, as well as the person who found it and sold it to Gizmodo) could be revealed. But that information had already reached the Web -- Gizmodo identified the Apple employee as an iPhone engineer, and Wired identified the phone seller, so San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Clifford V. Cretan decided that since the information was already out there, there was no point in keeping the papers sealed up.
Judge Cretan made note of the irony that the papers were originally sealed to hide "possible intrusion into media sources," and now it was media institutions asking to have the papers opened up.
Wired has the papers now -- they say (not surprisingly) that the iPhone seller's roommate led police to Brian Hogan (who found the phone), but there's also news that Hogan had allegedly spread evidence around Redwood City. The papers also confirm that Gizmodo paid $5000 for the iPhone, but there was also a bonus promised to Hogan when Apple officially announced the phone, and an additional $3500 payment from "another source." Interesting. Maybe there is more to this case than we had originally heard. Keep in mind that this is only the initial investigation -- no charges have yet been filed.

Переслать - Foxconn looking to hire an exorcist, Wintek dealing with lawsuit
Filed under: Apple Corporate
This one's just plain weird. After being plagued with a series of suicides recently, Apple supplier Foxconn has brought in an exorcist to try and end the "negative incidents" at the plant. What a mess.
Foxconn has been called out for bad labor conditions before, and call us skeptical, but the problem probably isn't demons that need to be exorcised by a monk. Still, the company is aiming to bring in the religious ceremonies to "bring peace to employees," so hopefully it'll help.
Foxconn isn't the only Chinese Apple supplier troubled by "negative incidents" recently -- Wintek was accused by dozens of workers that a chemical used to clean iPhone screens during manufacturing made them sick. 62 workers at the plant have been hospitalized, and 44 of them claim it was due to n-hexane poisoning and are suing the company (a rarity, we're told, in China). Wintek also had to deal with a violent strike situation earlier this year over the same n-hexane issue.
So two messy situations with Apple-contracted suppliers overseas. Apple probably doesn't have the choice any more (or the responsibility, they might say) to control what these companies do, although it is troubling that people are getting hurt or even dying just to produce cheap electronics. Hopefully both of these issues will find a just resolution.TUAWFoxconn looking to hire an exorcist, Wintek dealing with lawsuit originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 14 May 2010 16:30:00 EST. Переслать - Three apps for iPhone that look great on iPad
Filed under: iPad
Universal binaries? These apps don't need no stinking universal binaries! That is, the following three apps are not tuned for iPads. A universal binary will switch to the "iPad version" of the app for that device. So you might have MobileStudio on your iPhone, but it also looks great on the iPad because they wrote code and added graphics to accommodate the larger screen size. But the apps I'll list look great with just the 2x upscaling you can do with any iPhone app (like, say, Apple's own Remote app, which is kinda lame on the iPad).
1. Bebot. Now, I've loved Bebot since the day I kissed his cute metal lips. But as a true instrument? The tiny screen on my iPhone did OK, but the iPad allows Bebot to really become a workable synthesizer. Not only that, but those chunky 50's-inspired graphics scale exceptionally well. No need for enhancements, although the tools for customizing Bebot's noises could use an overhaul. How about flip the screen ala iBooks and create a Moog-like patch panel for making new sounds? Analog heaven!
2. Scanner911. OK, so the aliased text on lists and most text IS there. That part doesn't scale. But when the scanner is actually running it looks like a big ol' scanner from something like BJ and the Bear. I want to mount the iPad on some dark wallboard and put an ashtray in front of it for guests. Scanner911 is one of my favorite apps, and I dig that somehow their graphics hold up when doubled.
3. World of Tunes. Most of the tap-based music games on iPhone are too cramped for my arthritic hands. But expanded twice their size they become enjoyable pastimes. World of Tunes is not only more fun on a bigger screen, it allows others to watch (and get those damn songs stuck in their heads). Plus the graphics look kinda cool and retro. The chunky graphics and gradients remind me of hours of playing Sonic. My kids certainly seem to enjoy the game as it is (for now) their favorite on the iPad. It's a really fun, cute game and quite a deal at US$.99.
I have close to 2,000 apps on my machine but have only tested a fraction -- so let me know in the comments what apps you have found that look great when simply doubled. It's also possible that at any time the developers of these apps could push an update that adds scaled-up iPad versions, but for now they rock without update.TUAWThree apps for iPhone that look great on iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 14 May 2010 16:00:00 EST. Переслать - First Look: Avatron Air Display for iPad extends your Mac screen
Filed under: iPad
Avatron Software already has an iPad hit on their hands with AirSharing (US$2.99, $9.99 for Pro edition). Now they're on the verge of releasing a new and useful app that could change the way that you use your iPad and Mac together. We've got an exclusive pre-release look at this intriguing app, called Air Display.
The concept behind Air Display is cool -- use your iPad as a small extension to your Mac's display. For example, let's say that you're working on a project and you want to use your entire screen, but you'd also like to be able to check your email in Mail.app. You fire up Air Display on your iPad, move the Mail window to your iPad, and now you have a small portable workspace that's not interrupting what you're doing on your Mac.
Apps like this are nothing new; just before iPad launch day, Shape Services released iDisplay ($4.99) which does the same thing. However, reviews of that app have been poor and it's pricey for what it does. Our very own Erica Sadun noted another solution in a post about a week later. Her post mentioned ScreenRecycler ($29.90), which uses a second computer (Windows, Mac, etc...) as an additional monitor for your Mac.

Переслать - Hulu on the iPad? Think app, not portal
Filed under: iPad
Watching TV on the iPad is a pleasure. More and more providers are coming on board, too, like ABC and CBS. Many of us are eager for a mobile solution from Hulu. Back in January, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar told Gigaom, "We will embrace any device...We are very big believers in mobile and we don't think about (just) one device only."
Then in April, The New York Times reported that a Hulu app was in development without giving any details.
This week, Eugene Wei, vice president of product at Hulu, discussed HTML 5 on the company's blog in an aside to the introduction of Hulu's new UI. The short version of his message is that Hulu can't implement it for now. "[HTML 5] doesn't yet meet all of our customers' needs," Wei writes.
He goes on to note that the Hulu player does more than just stream video; it must also report statistics to advertisers, secure the company's content, communicate buffer information and more -- tasks that Flash is simply better at performing. At least for now. "Not all video sites have these needs," he adds, "but for our business these are all important and often contractual requirements."
Compare these statements with the rumors of a forthcoming solution for the iPad and we can assume that an app much like the ABC player is likely. The ABC player, which I love, streams ad-supported episodes of the network's daytime and prime time shows for free. Rumors suggest that Hulu will introduce a paid subscription with their app; some suggest that it will run customers between 9 and 10 dollars a month. Good luck with that, Hulu.
TV on the ultra-portable iPad is one of its selling points. I'm so accustomed to seeing ads interspersed with programming that I don't mind it on my mobile devices. But asking me to pay for something I've already paid for (cable bill) is silly. Here's hoping Hulu reconsiders.

Cables, schmables. Why occupy valuable USB slots when you can make iTunes data fly magically over virtual intertubes to and from your home computer? New to the jailbreak world, Wi-Fi Sync introduces over-the-air sync to iPhone devices.
The application works like this: you install a client app on your desktop computer (10.5 and 10.6 Mac only at this time), which you can download for free from the Wi-Fi Sync website. Then, run the $9.99 Wi-Fi Sync application on your iPhone. Your phone will appear in iTunes' sources list as a connected device. I'm by no means a power GTD user, but like a lot of you I am juggling different projects and need to find a way to organize them. When I was younger, I carried around a paper planner, but now I have an iPhone and an iPad in addition to my desktop Mac.
The iPad on its own makes an awesome replacement for a paper planner. Paired with the iPhone, it's incredible. Any productivity developer for the iPad needs to have the following in mind.
- It has to stand on its own as an effective program.
- It has to work seamlessly with the iPhone, preferably with cloud syncing
- It has to be affordable.
The available productivity apps that span both iPhone and iPad are usually lacking in one of the above areas. For Things, it's price and the lack of cloud sync. You're shelling out $30 for the iPhone and iPad products alone. Tack on the desktop and that's another $49.95. Same goes for OmniFocus, whose iPad app is not available yet.
Within the past couple of weeks, some affordable alternatives have emerged on the App Store. These programs are pretty great on their own, but they also come with issues -- especially when it comes to syncing with other devices. First up, we take a look at BitAlpha's Taska for the iPad and iPhone.

If you divvy up the universe of iPad hands-on coverage over the past month, there's a reasonable midline with "Here's all I was able to do with it" on one side, and "Here are the things it doesn't do, isn't that ludicrous?" on the other. Michael Gartenberg's post at Slashgear about a two-week road experiment with just his iPad falls in the first bucket, and Kate Bevan's What's Wrong With the iPad? at the Guardian's web site clearly goes in the second.
Among Bevan's several pain points with her iPad, she focuses on the absence of a few core apps that helped make the iPhone experience complete: Clock, Voice Memos, Weather, and Calculator. While not all of them have full-featured third party replacements (the Apple-only backgrounding rule in OS 3.2 means that other alarm clocks don't allow you to switch apps and still get your wakeup call), there's certainly ample coverage on Calculator. In particular, Shift's Digits provides a fullscreen, history-tape enabled, email capable, snazzy calculator that should address most number-crunching needs.
Digits is a whopping 99 cents in the US store, but we've got ten promo codes to give away to US readers (sorry, rest of world, promo codes are country-specific) -- just leave a comment below to enter, telling us your favorite 'replacement' app for the ones Apple forgot to put on the first-generation iPad.

iNet is incredibly handy. I needed a list of the MAC addresses of all of the devices on my network. It's a fairly tedious process that requires a lot of copy and pasting and a lot of poking around in network settings. Then, I remembered I had iNet Pro on my iPhone. I fired it up, ran a scan, and then emailed myself a nicely-formatted report that listed all of the devices.
Later, my satellite Internet went down. Every couple of minutes, I launched iNet and had it run "ping" against www.google.com to see if the connection was back up. I've used it to see if my wife's iPhone was on the network (a good way to see if she is awake) and to remember the static IP address of a network printer at my office.
iNet Pro can run port scans (offering a custom set of ports to check or letting you run your own) and show you a list of Bonjour services that are available for each computer. If you have any computers set to use Wake On Lan, iNet can send the necessary signal. I haven't used that feature but Apple improved upon it in Snow Leopard and explains how to determine if your Mac supports Wake On Demand.
The developer also offers iNet Wake On Lan (WOL) and iNet Portscan, each for $1.99. It's important to note, though, that iNet Pro contains both WOL and Portscan capabilities. If you really only need those particular features, you can save a couple of dollars by purchasing only what you need. However, the Pro version is still only $5.
There are several versions of iNet available. The basic iNet Network Scanner is $0.99 (all prices USD) and iNet Pro is $4.99. The website includes a handy guide to the iNet and iNet Pro Feature List (PDF), which explains the differences. You can upgrade from iNet to iNet Pro as a $3.99 in-app purchase, so if you aren't sure that you need everything the Pro version does, you can start small without worrying that you're going to cost yourself more by not buying the Pro version right away.TUAWiNet Pro is a handy network utility for your iPhone originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 14 May 2010 10:00:00 EST.
