- Cool iPad decals from Etsy
We've spotlighted vinyl decals for MacBooks before, but comic art blog Super Punch has spotted a few fun iPad decals on sale over at the homemade crafts site. This Joker iPad one is probably my favorite, but there are plenty more, including a Kirby version, one for Lego fans, and a nice Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference (which you could maybe even pair up with some "nice friendly letters" on a wallpaper).
I've got a much more rugged case on my iPhone, just because I bring it everywhere with me, but an iPad seems a little more ideal for something artistic -- stick it in a case while traveling, and you can be a little more careful with it while actually using it. And there's a lot of empty space back there, too -- just the thing to fill with a little artistic flair.TUAWCool iPad decals from Etsy originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 20 May 2010 18:00:00 EST. Переслать - Data Robotics gives Drobo FS full Time Machine compatibility
When Data Robotics announced the Drobo FS last month, one common complaint among potential buyers was that it doesn't offer native support for doing networked Time Machine backups. Just connecting a Drobo FS to a network of Macs could cause issues for Time Machine backups, since the built-in backup feature of Mac OS X tends to consume every last morsel of space it can and even the huge capacity of the Drobo FS could be chewed up quickly.
Data Robotics announced today that the Drobo FS now supports network-based Time Machine backups. The company shipped a new version of Drobo Dashboard for the FS allowing the creation of shares for Time Machine use. In Dashboard v1.7.2, there's now a control to enable Time Machine support on a Drobo array, then set a maximum size for the share so that the backup files don't take over all of the space on the device.
The company has released the code that they wrote to specify volume sizes into the Open Source Community. The Netatalk project, hosted on SourceForge, provides a Unix/Linux daemon that is available to all Linux developers and any other vendors who sell to Mac OS X users.TUAWData Robotics gives Drobo FS full Time Machine compatibility originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 20 May 2010 17:00:00 EST. Переслать - Survey: iPad customer satisfaction is at 91%
Filed under: iPad
A pair of surveys from ChangeWave reinforce what we've suspected for the last month: People like the iPad a lot, and that's not about to change. The first survey of a whopping 153 people (I saw more in the supermarket this morning) found that 74% said they are "very satisfied" with their iPads, and another 17% are "somewhat satisfied." How many disliked the iPad? A full 2% claimed to be "unsatisfied." Aww.
In another survey, ChangeWave asked 3,174 potential customers if they plan to buy iPads. Of that group, 7% of respondents said they are "very likely" to buy an iPad. Another 13 percent are "somewhat likely." That first number has risen since ChangeWave started conducting these surveys.
As word-of-mouth and actual hands-on time with these things spreads, those numbers will continue to climb. My own un-scientific experience is that everyone who spends 10-15 minutes tapping around becomes instantly smitten. Heck, even my kid sees the potential, and he doesn't work for a research firm.TUAWSurvey: iPad customer satisfaction is at 91% originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 20 May 2010 16:00:00 EST. Переслать - Found Footage: Apple pulls iSlam Muhammad app
Filed under: Found Footage
In what is sure to raise a ruckus, comedian / filmmaker / app developer Emery Emery recorded a phone call with an Apple App Store rep when his iSlam Muhammad app was pulled from the App Store after one day. The highly entertaining conversation in its entirety can be heard by watching the "video" above.
iSlam Muhammad apparently depicted images of the prophet Muhammad (forbidden by Islam) and outlined disturbing passages from the Qur'an. It's surprisingly similar to BibleThumper, a Christian-bashing app that remains in the App Store.
This act of Apple censorship coincides with International Draw Muhammad Day, an Internet event designed to demonstrate how radical Islamic factions are causing traditional news outlets to self-censor themselves in fear of violent retaliation. This event has resulted in the country of Pakistan banning Facebook and YouTube, both of which have a number of pages that are touting the event.
What's disappointing is that this points out Apple's lack of consistency in approval of apps, as well as their inability to provide recourse to developers who have had apps rejected for seemingly weak reasons. Now, let the comments begin! Be civil.TUAWFound Footage: Apple pulls iSlam Muhammad app originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 20 May 2010 15:00:00 EST. Переслать - Simplify Media, a Mac favorite, bought by Google
Filed under: Multimedia
We were wondering what happened to Simplify Media, the well-regarded software that offers your Mac ubiquitous access to your DRM-free music and photos via iTunes, an iPhone or iPod touch.
In March, we reported that the company was "heading in a different direction," which turned out to be a sale to Google. The Simplify Media app was removed from the app store, and the ability to share your iTunes library with others was removed. The sale was just announced this morning at the Google I/O conference.
Google intends to use the product on Android Phones, and it will be a component part of an iTunes-type of service that's in development.
If anyone had any doubts about Google offering competition for Apple, this should remove it. Competition is good, and this will be most interesting to watch. The nasty part is that Simplify Media for the Mac ecosystem is likely gone for good.TUAWSimplify Media, a Mac favorite, bought by Google originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 20 May 2010 14:00:00 EST. Переслать - iFixit tears down the updated Macbook
Filed under: MacBook
As usual, the folks at iFixit.com have taken apart a piece of Apple hardware. This time, it's the recently refreshed Macbook. This update wasn't significant, so most of the machine's innards are the same, with a few exceptions.
First is a larger battery. Apple proudly notes that the MacBook will give users 10 hours of battery life. The feat is accomplished, in part, by a slightly larger and heavier battery. Despite having the same model number (A1331) as the battery found in the unibody MacBook that was refreshed last October, the current one is 7.5 grams heavier and provides an extra 350 mAh of power. In fact, it's the same 63.5 watt-hour battery as the 13" MacBook Pro.
Also new in this machine is audio and video out via the Mini DisplayPort, which is a small but very welcome change.
We enjoy the iFixit teardowns, but always wonder...who puts it back together?

Переслать - Industry analyst -- iPad outselling the Mac
Filed under: iPad
Industry analyst Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital Markets is bullish on the iPad, noting that at this early date, Apple is selling more than 200,000 a week of the new device. By comparison, US sales of Macs are hovering at about 110,000 per week and sales of the iPhone 3GS are at about 246,000 per week based on first quarter 2010 sales figures.
Now, remember that this is all based on the iPad selling in one country -- the United States. The official international launch of the iPad is coming up at the end of next week, which prompted Abramsky to raise his estimate of global iPad sales during 2010 from 5 million to a whopping 8 million.
Some may be thinking that iPad sales are cannibalizing sales of Macs, but Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster shot that theory down earlier in the week, noting that it's more likely that iPod sales will suffer. UBS analyst Maynard Um ran a small survey which showed that most iPad buyers don't see the device as a replacement for their more traditional computers, including Macs.
Many analysts are of the opinion that the iPad, like the iPhone before it, will generate a "halo effect" that will drive sales of other Apple products as well.

Переслать - International iPad App Store opening early
Filed under: iPad
On May 28th, the iPad begins shipping in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK, at last rewarding customers who've been waiting longer than expected. Speaking of waiting, international access to the iPad App Store is available today, but with limited functionality.
Italian website ipadevice has posted screenshots of the Italian iPad App Store (English translation here). It's mostly functional, displaying new apps and rating charts. The books section is still unfinished, and Apple's iWork and iBooks apps are still unlisted, though an international customer can still download iBooks with an American account.
Note that the "iPad App Store" isn't a separate entity, but a presentation of the store's offerings pushed to iPads that highlights iPad-optimized apps. If you're outside of Italy and the US, can you gain access? Let us know.

Переслать - iPad steel drum played with conductive fiber mallets
Filed under: iPad
Jobs told us, "If you see a stylus, they blew it," but what if the stylus is a steel drum mallet? Someone built an iPad app, as you can see above, that is designed to imitate the look and sound of a steel drum. It needed something a little extra, though, ... like actual mallets to play with. So, they made a mallet out of conductive cloth, which is a special fabric that enables the iPad's surface to recognize the touches. Wrap the end of a drumstick in fabric, tie it off, and you're good to start drummin', mon!
That's good stuff. There have to be other great uses for this kind of cloth, too; while a stylus isn't ideal most of the time, there are certain times when specific tool-like metaphors (maybe a brush for a painting app?) would work better than just a finger. What else can we use to control the multi-touch screen?TUAWiPad steel drum played with conductive fiber mallets originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 20 May 2010 10:00:00 EST. Apple has quietly added Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer ratings and reviews for movies in the iTunes Store. Rotten Tomatoes is one of the most popular movie review sites on the web. It uses reviews from top critics and film societies to produce Tomatometer ratings -- a percentage-based rating of a movie derived from the averages of all the reviews of the film.
iTunes' integrated Rotten Tomatoes ratings presents the movie's prospective buyers and renters with the Tomatometer chart featuring the total count of reviews along with a fresh/rotten breakdown and the average rating. Viewers are also shown four review snippets from Top Critic reviewers, followed by a link to the movies page on RottenTomatoes.com.

Rotten Tomatoes - Review - Movies - Arts - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Blizzard to update WoW app with Auction House service, subscription
Filed under: iPhone
We've posted about the World of Warcraft Armory app from Blizzard Entertainment before. Now, Blizzard has announced that they'll soon be adding a new, long-awaited feature: the ability to browse and even set up in-game auctions from on the iPhone itself. The Remote Auction House on the iPhone Armory app is just one feature of their upcoming Armory system; they're going to be releasing an update to the official app soon that will let WoW players browse the auction house for free, and for an extra subscription price of $3 per month (in addition to the game's $15/month charge), players will be able to buy, create, and relist items on sale in the in-game marketplace.
This is a functionality that a lot of people have wanted ever since Blizzard released the iPhone app in the first place. While at least one other MMO company has planned to use the iPhone in this same way, Blizzard is the first to bring an extra subscription charge for the privilege. The extra fee will also allow players to access the AH on the Web from anywhere, and even without the extra charge, players can get notifications about when auctions are up or sold and browse auction house sales. The update is out now on the App Store, and the Remote Auction House service will be out soon.
One thing that the update won't bring (yet, presumably) is iPad compatibility -- this app is still only for the iPhone and iPod touch. Blizzard has been pretty committed to Mac development in the past, though, and it's still not out of the realm of possibility that we'll see an iPad offering from them. We'll have to stay tuned.TUAWBlizzard to update WoW app with Auction House service, subscription originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 20 May 2010 09:00:00 EST. I've already exclaimed my love for Dizzypad, and Captain Ludwig is a game in the same vein. You're tasked with navigating a character (in this case, a little man) around a series of rotating platforms. However, while Dizzypad is more of an open-ended arcade game, Captain Ludwig adds some strategy and goal chasing to the mix by emphasizing collection and exploration. The game is a series of stages, and each stage has stars to collect; the overall goal is to explore the entire "system" of spinning planets.
There are a few other elements (mines and rockets both hinder and help on the journey), but the biggest innovation is just that sense of exploration. Unlike Dizzypad, where it was all about timing, Ludwig actually gives you someplace to go. You can try it for free with the lite version or pick up the full game for just US$1.99.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Captain Ludwig originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 20 May 2010 08:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPad
Good news, everyone! In response to the public outcry over Apple's no-cash-for-iPad policy, Apple has relented. You will now be able to purchase iPads in-store using cash and gift cards. Yes, you'll also have to set up a traceable Apple account at the same time, but the lack of credit or debit card will no longer bar the sale of iPads to consumers.
Apple's controversial (although not illegal in most states) no-cash policy for the iPad was introduced to limit gray-market iPad redistribution. The demand for iPads remains high world-wide, and as the eBay iPad site shows, there's money to be made for anyone willing to part with their new electronic friend. It's kind of like Terry Pratchett's notion of "negotiable affection." Sure, you love the iPad -- but there's no question that it's profitable to share that love with others.
Under Apple's new rules, you will still be limited to two-device-purchases per user. You'll be able to pay for those two devices using an expanded payment vocabulary, but Apple intends to firmly enforce its existing allocation control measures. So Apple will ban any customer it finds purchasing too many iPads -- even if you are picking that extra one up for a colleague or a gift.

On Tuesday, Appleinsider wrote that Apple's Final Cut team may refocus the application suite's focus from its current professional target to a more "prosumer" type of customer. Since then, many avid Final Cut Studio users have lamented the possibility of an iMovie 8-style "dumbing down" of the video editing suite, fearing that Apple's catering to "prosumer" users would mean excising the "pro" from Final Cut Pro.
Apple spokesman Bill Evans told CNET that's not going to happen. He stresses Apple's commitment to its professional video editor customers and says, "The next version of Final Cut is going to be awesome, and our pro customers are going to love it." This echoes remarks from a Steve Jobs e-mail last month, where he assured a concerned Final Cut Pro user that people removed from the Final Cut team "were in support, not engineering." "Next release will be awesome," Jobs said.
It may be the case that Apple is focusing on making Final Cut Express more user-friendly for those used to the simpler interface of iMovie, while still maintaining the features professionals have demanded of Final Cut Studio. Hopefully we should know one way or the other soon; Final Cut Studio's last update was July 23 of last year.TUAWFinal Cut Studio won't be dumbed down originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 19 May 2010 21:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone
That's the word from AT&T honcho Ralph de la Vega this morning at a JPMorgan tech conference, as reported by Business Insider. Now Ralphie is not sayin' Verizon will get the iPhone, but he thinks if they do it will have a minimal impact.
He told the crowd that switching carriers is a tough thing for many customers to do. He said that 70% of AT&T customers are on family plans, which are tough to get out of. He also said that 40% of AT&T customers are on corporate discount plans, which can be a pain to let go of.
AT&T has been the exclusive source for the iPhone for the last 3 years, while Apple has often moved to multiple carriers overseas. The majority of AT&T complaints have been dropped calls, poor signal strength, and the lack of tethering, which was promised but hasn't been delivered as yet. It appears to be built into the soon to be released iPhone OS 4, but having the capability and turning it on are two different things.
Survey after survey shows customers unhappy with AT&T, and the company has responded with some increased expenditures in cities that had really bad reception issues and a re-branding.
Would Apple add Verizon to get existing Verizon customers who want the iPhone, thinking that most AT&T customers will stay with what they have? How about you? Filed under: iPad
I've been a fan of the Netflix app for iPad (free) since it first arrived on the scene, but it always made me sad that I couldn't use my little Apple Dock Connector to VGA Adapter to display videos through a projector or TV.
Now I have a happy face. As of this afternoon, Netflix has updated the app to version 1.0.2, which provides support for video output via the aforementioned VGA adapter as well as the component and composite video cables. That means that you now have the ability to stream a movie from Netflix to your iPad, then zap that movie out to your projector, VGA monitor, or any TV with component or composite inputs. The resolution might not be what you're used to with an HDTV, but this does have a high coolness factor...

Переслать - Apple to trademark distinctive retail store layout
Filed under: Retail
Patently Apple points out another Apple filing today, this time in reference to the retail stores. Specifically, Apple is looking to trademark the "distinctive design and layout" that they've cultivated since opening their first retail location in 2001. The filing provides two sketches -- one in full color and the other in black-and-white -- and a photo depicting the typical exterior and interior of Apple Stores.
On one hand, you've got to wonder exactly how "distinctive" a retail store's interior can be. You've got counters, products, stools and a checkout/desk area. On the other hand, consider the fervor that accompanied the opening of the first Microsoft stores, which bear a striking resemblance to Apple's outlets. Not that they're targeting Microsoft specifically, but any company that would blatantly mimic their successful model.
I wonder if the trademark addresses the dancing.

If you've used the iPhone sibling, BeeJive won't be that different to you. You can send files and photos from the app itself, though you can only select from a photo album for the latter. You can record audio messages and share chats with other people through e-mail, customize the wallpaper and toggle sounds among default, Yahoo, AIM or MSN. Emoticons still work, though the ability to use the /me emote is absent. You can also join chatrooms, that feature in and of itself setting BeeJive above its competitors. Переслать - A pair of iPad stands heading your way soon
Filed under: iPad
The TUAW tip line has been ringing off the hook this morning, with not one, but two companies announcing iPad stands.
Many iPad owners are beginning to find that they want a way to have the iPad held in front of them, but not necessarily using their hands. Apple has not yet released the antigravity float pad for the iPad, so for the time being we're seeing a lot of mounts and stands that have been designed to take the weight of the device out of your hands.
The first is the Stabile iPad stand from Thought Out. Made of 4 pounds of "solid American steel," this stand looks like a take on the iMac / Cinema Display stand. It holds the iPad in either landscape or portrait orientation, and with the weight of the stand being concentrated in the bottom, the low center of gravity should keep this from tipping over regardless of how active the user's interaction with the iPad becomes.
The Stabile stand is available for pre-order now at a price of US$59.99 for black and $69.99 for silver, and will ship in June.TUAWA pair of iPad stands heading your way soon originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 19 May 2010 15:00:00 EST. Переслать - Rumor: White faceplate for the 4G iPhone
Filed under: iPhone
What don't we know about the 4G iPhone at this point? This must be how clairvoyants feel on Christmas Eve. Taiwanese site Apple.pro compounds the letdown* by posting pictures of what appears to be a white iPhone faceplate. The holes for the speaker and front-facing camera that we're all expecting identify it as the front plate. There seems to be a small slit above the speaker slot, but that's probably to accommodate the ambient light sensor.
Currently, white iPhone models still have a black casing on the back. It looks like the new model will be white in front and back.
At this point, the 4G iPhone will have to sing "Hello My Baby" to surprise us, and that's too bad. Don't you miss the anticipation that used to precede these announcements? I sure do. Call me old fashioned.

It took a little longer than expected, but Twitter for iPhone (née Tweetie) is now available. Mostly it looks exactly the same as Tweetie 2, with the exception of a new icon (shown here).
I was surprised to see that Twitter for iPhone doesn't use OAuth, meaning that we'll be seeing another version before the end of June. (Note: they may be using xAuth instead, which would not necessitate an update.) The "Services" menu still shows support for Favrd, which has been gone for months, but it also includes several other useful services like Tweet Blocker, Follow Cost, Favstar.fm, Overlapr, and Tweeteorites.
A few noticeable changes in your timeline include inline retweets and location information (where available). If you are not logged in you can see trending topics (although why you would want to see trending topics is another question entirely) and search. There is also support for "Top Tweets" and "Suggested Users," two more features of little practical value.
