- MovieBuddy for the iPad: a new way to look at Netflix
Filed under: App Review
MovieBuddy for Netflix [US $0.99] is a new native iPad app that serves as a graphically beautiful front-end for Netflix subscribers. Billy Crystal, as Fernando on Saturday Night Live, had a catch-phrase that went: "It's better to look good than to feel good," and that's what kept going through my mind as I looked at this app.
It looks great. You are presented with a beautiful velvet movie curtain that raises to show movies in your queue, or lets you browse for films by category by displaying lines of posters with a nicely rendered spotlight over each one. You swipe left to see more movies, or select See All to get a grid or CoverFlow view of all the movies in the category. When a movie is selected a box pops up allowing you to Add to Instant, Add to DVD, or Add to Blu-ray to put the movie in your queue. If the movie is available to stream, tapping on Watch Now plays the movie. Tapping on View Details brings up a lovely looking screen showing a large poster and the same information you saw before, but in a much nicer presentation. Not much new information is added outside of a slightly larger cast list. It all looks great. But how does it feel?
I didn't think it felt that great at all, since for a nice display you are giving up a ton of functionality found in the free Netflix iPad app, which must be installed on your iPad anyway before MovieBuddy will work. What you don't get is the artificial intelligence engine found on the Netflix site and on its app. I was told by the developers that the categories you get IS personalized in the same way it appears on the XBox, PS3 and WII, but I don't have one of these to see. The results didn't seem personalized to me and what was displayed in the Netlix app appeared much more aligned to my individual tastes. But something is going on since every movie in every category were films I had already seen and rated. Since MovieBuddy is competing with the Netflix app, here's a list of things that the Netflix app lets you do that MovieBuddy doesn't.TUAWMovieBuddy for the iPad: a new way to look at Netflix originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 08 May 2010 17:00:00 EST. Переслать - TUAW is giving away Iugo Mobile Entertainment games for iPad and iPhone
Filed under: iPad
If you read Erica Sadun's post yesterday about Iugo Mobile Entertainment's new games for the iPad platform or watched the video, you know that the development firm has been changing the paradigm of mobile gaming by creating games that can be played by two people at once on the iPad.
Cliffed XL (US$1.99) is a 2D scrolling racer, the free Escape - Norm's World XL is a hard-to-master puzzle game, Implode! XL ($2.99) is a wild casual game in which you demolish old buildings with dynamite, and Zombie Attack! Second Wave XL ($3.99) is a tower defense tame with oodles of zombies. All of the games also work on iPhone and iPod touch, so you don't need to be an iPad owner to enjoy them.
Thanks to Iugo Mobile Entertainment, we're giving away a set of games -- Cliffed XL, Implode! XL, and Zombie Attack! Second Wave XL -- to 9 lucky TUAW readers. If you're a winner, you'll get promo codes for all three games from TUAW and Iugo. To enter, just leave a comment below with the name of your favorite of these three Iugo titles. Переслать - A tale of two mediums: Despite the iPad, traditional books aren't going anywhere.
It was the newest of technologies, it was the oldest of technologies. A while back I wrote an opinion piece on my lament over Penguin Books' John Makinson trying to reinvent books on the iPad. In response to the article, I received emails that ranged from people calling me a Luddite to readers asking me to petition Penguin to keep books from becoming audio, video, and streaming monstrosities. What people on both sides of the debate misunderstood was that I am not against ebooks. I'm against turning an ebook into a multimedia experience that detracts from the work of literature.
A few days ago I was in London having drinks with a novelist and a literary agent. We discussed the pros and cons of the iPad as a book reader and how the iPad as a medium and its iBookstore affects the reading public. The novelist and agent gave me their impressions of the device and how it will, if at all, change the way readers consume books. We also spoke about Penguin's ideas to reinvent books as apps and discussed my previous article on the subject along with the notion that some people in the tech world think that the iPad and iBookstore will kill traditional books.
Our conversation got me thinking: I normally read about 50-60 books a year in paperback format, but I had owned my iPad for a week already and had yet to try my favorite pastime on it. So I decided to compare how reading the same book in paperback would compare with reading it on the iPad. In order not to bias the medium I was reading it on by already having discovered the story on another device (and thus being a little bored with it on a second reading that so closely followed the first), I decided to read one novel -- every other of its chapters on the iPad and then in paperback.TUAWA tale of two mediums: Despite the iPad, traditional books aren't going anywhere. originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 08 May 2010 15:00:00 EST. IPad - Unofficial Apple Weblog - E-book - Penguin Books - IBookstoreПереслать - Survey: Consumers are replacing other computers with iPad
Filed under: iPad
So, now that both versions of the iPad are out and available, it's probably time to ask the question: does a device like this replace another computer, or is it an entirely new category? Back during the announcement, Jobs was adamant that it was definitely a netbook replacement ("Netbooks aren't better than anything," he said then), but could it even replace notebook computers? According to a new survey, 44% of iPad purchasers say they won't be buying a notebook because of the device. That's not the only computing category taking a hit, either. The same survey found that 41% said they didn't need an iPod touch because of the iPad, and 27% said they wouldn't even need a desktop computer.
Now, obviously a survey is a temporary screenshot of people who have just spent $500 on a computer. Just because people say they won't need a new computer in a few years doesn't mean that they won't. Likewise, netbook sales are supposedly dropping off already. After reaching a high last year, they crashed in January after the announcement and then again when the iPad released. The statistics student in us points out that cause doesn't necessarily imply effect, though (and sure enough, the iPad wasn't actually announced until 17 days after the NPD data citing the netbook drop in interest). This is early, early research, and the actual effect the iPad will have on other markets isn't clear yet.
As a trend, however, it certainly appears that the iPad will do its best to take a bite out of as many computing markets as it can (and possibly even some of Apple's own device markets). While anecdotal data tells us that the iPad is still mostly a "satellite" computer rather than a full-fledged workstation, this customer survey says that all sorts of users are ready to jump ship on their older technology.

Borders has announced a very low cost e-reader that will ship in June. The device, made by Canadian company Kobo, will sell for U.S. $149.99 and come preloaded with 100 classic books.
At a much lower cost than the iPad, the Barnes and Noble Nook, and the Amazon Kindle, the book reader may get some attention from bargain hunters. Borders has also announced that e-books will also be available from an app that runs on the iPhone, the iPod touch, and the iPad. There will also be a version for Apple desktops and laptops.
It's not likely that the books themselves will be any cheaper than they are on other services, but Borders is likely to have a better selection that the Apple iBook Store, which is pretty thin right now. Borders says it will have a million books available online, while Apple claims to have "tens of thousands."
The Kobo app (without the Borders connection) is actually already available for the iPhone and the iPad, but neither app has garnered very positive reviews. Our own Erica Sadun found some things to like about the iPad app in her preview last March.TUAWBorders Books announces e-reader with apps for iPhone, OS X and the iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 08 May 2010 13:00:00 EST. Apple - AppleStore - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - IPhoneПереслать - App Store filling up with spammers and clones of popular apps
Filed under: App Store
Marco Arment has noticed a growing problem on the App Store; as hits emerge from among the free and paid apps, some companies are doing a little search scamming. They're ripping off the names, styles, and sometimes even the art of popular iPhone apps. He went to get the popular Angry Birds game and found that there are companies actually selling apps with "Cheats" and "Trivia" added on to the titles, often reusing the artwork from the original game.
Certainly, some of these fall into a legal gray area (Angry Bird is technically another game, even though it's obviously hopping on the back of the more popular title), but some of them are straight up scams, and the angry reviews and terrible ratings prove that's the case. Arment calls out a few companies (whose titles are still on the App Store, as of this writing). He says that developers who feel an app is infringing on their trademarks can send a message to appstorenotices@apple.com to let Apple know about the problem.
We'd love to see Apple clean house on these, but of course, we're not yet sure of their position. They may have some guidelines that define how close an app can get before it's actually infringing, but some of these are clearly over the line. We'll have to wait and see what actions Apple decides to take.TUAWApp Store filling up with spammers and clones of popular apps originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 07 May 2010 20:00:00 EST.
