- Steam for Mac, Portal, Torchlight out tomorrow
Filed under: Gaming
Tomorrow's the big day: Valve's Steam platform is officially coming to the Mac, and it's bringing two of my favorite games along with it. Portal is the first one -- hopefully if you're a gamer you've already played it, but it was my absolute favorite game of 2007 and one of the best games I've played in the last five years. Runic Games' terrific Torchlight is also along for the ride. It's a Diablo-style hack and slash game (created by a few ex-Blizzard guys) that is another must-play. The best part is that both of these are "Steam Play" titles, which means that if you already own them on Steam for Windows, you own them on Steam for Mac as well.
Engadget posted a nice roundup recently of Steam for Mac impressions, but the bottom line is that it's exactly the same as the PC version, so if you've used it on Windows, you'll know what you're in for. And on the eve of the occasion, Wired has a funny little writeup of how these games will differ on Apple's platform. For instance, Portal's GLaDOS voiceover will actually replaced with Steve Jobs, and the portal guns available in the game will only create entrances, not exits. At first, Steve will tell you that exits aren't really necessary, but then they'll later be patched in via software in three to six months. Filed under: iPhone
MobileCrunch reports that AT&T has been quietly tweaking the upgrade eligibility dates for the next iPhone. While most of those who purchased the iPhone 3GS at launch had an upgrade date available sometime in November, far be it from AT&T to stand in the way of a new iPhone purchase. They've been changing the dates without fanfare to as soon as June 21st, 2010. That doesn't really confirm anything, but it's almost a forgone conclusion at this point that Apple will release a new iPhone in June. I would say (as a guess/prediction) that we'll first hear about it during WWDC, and that it'll hit store shelves near the end of the month.
Unless there's a big surprise in the pipeline, we've probably already seen this phone as well -- you've probably seen the leaked shots that precluded the whole "left in a bar" situation (that is still under investigation, as far as we know). It's possible that phone was just a prototype, and that Apple won't go for those weird silver buttons, but most likely, that's the phone we'll see Steve holding on stage in just over a month. Filed under: MacBook
A few weeks ago I introduced you to a new line of low-cost docking stations for the MacBook and MacBook Pro from a new company called Henge Docks. Thanks to Henge Docks, I've been able to take a look at the construction of one of these products for the 13" MacBook Pro, and we'll be giving away our review model to a lucky TUAW reader.
As I noted in the first post, the Henge Docks aren't made to handle MacBooks with their screens open. Instead, the company chose to focus on using the MacBooks in a vertical docked position with the screen closed. You'd use this in cases where your MacBook is connected to an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, or where you're using the MacBook as a "media center" to display photos or video, or act as a music server.
That being said, the Henge Docks do a good job at a low cost. Rather than create a docking station that required a lot of high-tech connectors and (most likely) approval by a lot of standards organizations, Henge chose to use standard over-the-counter cables and connectors. It's how those cables and connectors are held into the docking station that is the clever idea.
Check out the gallery below for a few nice closeups and details of the Henge Dock.

Переслать - Add GPS to your jailbroken WiFi iPad with BTstack GPS
Filed under: iPad
A while back, TUAW took a peek at RoqyBluetooth, a GPS solution for jailbroken iPads and iPod touches. Today, Matthias Ringwald has released BTstack GPS. Like Roqy, BTstack GPS offers integrated core location for Bluetooth-enabled devices that lack an onboard GPS system.
Retailing for $5 (via the Cydia store), BTstack GPS was written by the same developer who created BTstack, allowing iPhone OS units to communicate with external bluetooth devices including keyboards (you may be familiar with his BTstack Keyboard application), mice, Wiimotes, and now, Bluetooth GPS dongles.
The software requires you to disable Apple's Bluetooth in the settings app. You then launch the GPS app, wait for your system to detect the external GPS unit, select it, pair, and then wait again as the GPS unit finds locks to the low orbit satellites that provide GPS data. This can take a minute or two, so be a little patient. Once the lock finishes and the GPS data starts flowing, Ringwald's app will update, showing your current location on a map.

Переслать - Square app now accepting payments on the iPhone
Filed under: iPhone
Square is the app that won over our hearts at MacWorld Expo in February. It allows vendors, business owners, individuals, etc. to accept credit card and debit card payments where they stand via a handy little app. Originally developed and advertised as an iPhone app, Square hit shelves in April as a fully-optimized iPad app.Today it's gone universal and is ready for your iPhone.
It's not the only mobile payment system in town, but Square does not require a merchant account and is targeted at individuals as much as business owners. To accept a payment, users can either type in a customer's card number of swipe it with the free reader that connects to the headphone jack. Переслать - Count The Beats: IK Multimedia announces Amplitube iRig for the iPhone
Filed under: Audio, iPhone, Music
To all you guitarists out there, we know you're incredibly particular about tone when it comes to your axe and the boutique pedals you play it through. But lets be honest, every now and again it can be a little tiresome lugging that oversized pedal board, and your vintage amp, through the underground for that one-off "favour for a friend" gig. Especially when the venue won't be able to handle your tone anyway (as apposed to that sell out rockin' show you did with the guys the night before).
Well, it seems like IK Multimedia has beat Line 6 to it. Now you can leave the industrial strength cases behind in exchange for your iPhone and the iRig (of course you still need your guitar).
IK Multimedia has brought their renowned guitar and effects virtualization software to the iPhone with the iRig. For £29.99 you can purchase the iRig peripheral hardware that enables you to plug your guitar / bass into your iPhone and then your iPhone into your amp, sound desk -- whatever tickles your fancy.
The baseline iRig app is downloaded off the app store (which comprises of two stomp boxes, one amp+cabinet and two microphones). If you wish you can upgrade the app with more stomp boxes, amps+cabinets and microphones via the a-la-carte in-app purchase and download process.
We're very much looking forward to trying this out for ourselves. If the iRig plays like Amplitube does on the Mac, there are some exciting possibilities ahead, one of which being less back ache!

Переслать - CBS will roll out HTML5 compliant portal for iPad
Filed under: iPad
Watching TV on an iPad is a joy. Prop it up, plug in some speakers, turn it on its side and sit back. You can carry it with you as you move about and the epic battery life permits episode after episode. The only drawback right now is the lack of content (I'm looking at you, Hulu). Fortunately, networks like CBS are keen to get on board.
This week, CBS VP Anthony Soohoo described his company's plans to create an iPad-compatible portal in an interview with NewTeeVee (video after the break). For now, Soohoo explains, full episodes of Survivor and clips from selected shows are available in HTML5. The network are taking what they learn in getting those shows out to bring their other titles to the HTML5 standard, and expect to achieve full content parity in time for the fall premieres.
While ABC is using an app to distribute shows to the iPad, Soohoo confirms that the network does not have plans for a dedicated app just now, and will focus on a HTML5 portal instead.
For me, the money quote comes at the beginning of the interview, when Soohoo says, "At the end of the day it doesn't matter if you watch content on television, on your mobile device or on your PC." That's exactly right. Who cares if I buy a record vs. a CD vs. a digital file? I'm still consuming the content. Soohoo even notes that the iPad's multi-touch capabilities offer unique advertising options.
It's nice to see a "suit" who gets it.

Переслать - hacksugar: Working with iPad-mounted USB drives
Filed under: iPad
Recently, TUAW has looked at using the iPad's camera connection kit to attach and use USB drives. If you're using a jailbroken iPad, you'll be pleased to discover that the camera connection kit allows you to connect a USB stick or hard drive and access it from your iPad. That means you can easily bring extra files on-the-go and copy them into third party (i.e. no, you're not going to update your iTunes library on the go...yet) applications.
Mounting drives is the province of a built-in application called MobileStorageMounter. It's part of the iPad's core services. When it sees a new FAT or HFS USB device, it attempts to mount that device using standard Unix services. If it finds a built-in DCIM folder on the drive, it launches the iPad Photos application. If not, it throws up the dialog shown at the top of this post, reporting that the attached USB device is not supported.
As far as you're concerned, that error message is good news. It means that the device has been properly mounted and is ready for use. If you do not see the dialog, it's time to take one of two courses of action: a quick fix that works most of the time and a thorough fix that always works.

Переслать - Borders Kobo joins eReader frenzy, iPhone, iPad apps out
Filed under: Odds and ends
In a move we all should have seen coming, Borders has announced the Kobo, its US$149 eReader and Kindle/Nook competitor. It will launch in June with an accompanying eBook store, stocked with more than a million titles.
There are iPad and iPhone apps out now, and both are free. The odd thing is that they both look gorgeous on the iDevices' color screens as compared to the Kobo's greyscale display, and offer wireless access to the store, which the reader does not.
The 8-ounce device features E Ink technology and tidy dimensions, measuring approximately 4.7 x 7.2 x 0.4 inches. The Kobo boasts 1 GB of memory and a battery charge that will reportedly last two weeks. It features Bluetooth, but book transfers are done via the included desktop software over USB.
The Kobo will be available starting on June 17th (Borders is accepting pre-orders now), just in time to make dad wonder why he doesn't deserve an iPad for Father's Day.TUAWBorders Kobo joins eReader frenzy, iPhone, iPad apps out originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 11 May 2010 13:00:00 EST. Переслать - More details on Disney's Apple-inspired retail redesigns
Filed under: Apple Corporate
Last October, The New York Times reported on Disney's plans to introduce sweeping redesigns to its 340 retail stores, turning to board member Steve Jobs for input. That collaboration marked the first time Steve's handiwork would be overtly applied to a Disney product since he joined the board in 2006. Today, ifoAppleStore points out this interview with Paul Gainer, Disney's VP and general manager for Disney Store, North America, that Chain Store Age magazine published in April. It offers some updates and insights on their collaboration with Jobs.
According to Gainer, Apple's influence has permeated aspects the model store's physical appearance as well as the retail team's philosophy and process. Contrary to common industry practice, Steve convinced Disney to build a full-scale and fully-stocked store model inside an unmarked Glendale, Calif. warehouse. Apple did the same thing before opening its own retail chains. All the while, Gainer reports, Jobs prompted Disney to think big and take the time to get everything right.
"Apple's main involvement was to inspire Disney to think big, to think new and to think creatively," Gainer told the magazine. "Early on, they told us to take our time to do it right, which was very sound advice."

Переслать - First Look: Byline 3.0 for iPhone
The folks over at Phantom Fish software have released version 3 of their popular Byline feed reader app for the iPhone. The update brings with it several new features, including integration with Instapaper, gesture-based navigation, and improved performance.
Byline works by fetching a list of feeds from your Google Reader subscriptions, and caching a copy of the articles on your iPhone for easy reading or viewing while offline. Now I'll admit, while Google Reader does simplify feed management by keeping all of your subscriptions and updates in one place, it's not my cup of tea. Personally, I prefer to manage feeds directly from my reader app, rather than having to go somewhere else to do it.
That aside, Byline 3 keeps the process simple by asking for your Google login, and then quickly going straight to your list of feeds without requiring any additional steps or setup. Each item is displayed right in the app, allowing quick navigation between stories and feeds. Want to view the link in Mobile Safari or send it to Instapaper? That can be done by tapping the forward menu icon on any item. Starring an item or adding notes is also simple and intuitive.
Since I'm a big fan of flexibility when it comes to iPhone apps, I was pleased to see the number of options offered in the settings panel. Viewing thresholds for several of the feed lists are easily configurable, so you can choose to limit or hide things like starred items or notes if you don't use those features. Other options include manual sync, portrait orientation locking and a few options to fine-tune the caching of stories.
Overall, the app is well done and easy to use. Ironically, the only complaint I really have had with it is sync speed, which is one of the things that were said to be improved in the new version. It's not unreasonably slow, but still slower than I'd have liked. In all fairness, though, I'm pretty sure my less-than-stellar internet connection was a contributing factor. A few posts on the developer's twitter feed suggest that a few minor bugs are already known, and will be fixed in an upcoming update.
Byline 3 is US$3.99 in the App Store, and is available now. Head on over and check it out!

App Store - Google Reader - iPhone - Apple - GoogleПереслать - Humble Indie Bundle moving towards $1 million, still being pirated
Filed under: Gaming
The Humble Indie Bundle that we posted about the other day is doing quite well -- they've raised almost US$800,000 by selling five indie games (playable on Mac, Linux, and Windows) for pay-what-you-will. In fact, they've done so well that they've added another game into the mix -- you'll also get Samorost 2 if you pick up the bundle. And a little birdie pointed out to us that if you pause their trailer video at about 1:16, they'll be adding another bonus to the mix if they reach a full million dollars raised. [Spoiler: They say they'll actually release the source code of Gish, Lugaru, and Penumbra Overture.]
Is there any bad news about this giveaway? Well yes: people are still pirating it. The developers claim that 25% of the bundle downloads are "pirated" -- people who didn't pay anything at all for it. They didn't secure the link, authenticate the downloads, or protect the game with DRM (and they didn't ask users to pay any more than one cent for it), and people are still just rolling up and downloading the games for free.
Unfortunately, that doesn't solve any arguments -- those for DRM would say that real security would prevent that, and those against DRM would claim that it won't. At any rate, those are five great indie games that are worth your money -- if you downloaded them for free, put a few bucks in the pot.TUAWHumble Indie Bundle moving towards $1 million, still being pirated originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 11 May 2010 10:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPad
MacRumors notes that Apple has recently updated a knowledge base support document offering solutions to Wi-Fi issues that a small minority of iPad users have been experiencing. Shortly after launch, Apple's support forums were rife with posts about poor Wi-Fi throughput and lost connections on the iPad. Despite the apparent flood of complaints, Apple has maintained that only a "very small number" of iPad users are affected with Wi-Fi issues (which makes sense because, even if there are 5000 posts from users reporting Wi-Fi connection issues, that's a far cry from the one million iPad's Apple has sold).
For the unfortunate few who are experiencing iPad Wi-Fi issues, there's good news: the recently updated support document states that Apple is hard at work on a fix and will "address remaining Wi-Fi connectivity issues with a future iPad software update." Until then, the support document lists a number of workarounds including updating your Wi-Fi router firmware, adjusting the iPad's screen brightness, renewing your IP address, and using WPA or WPA2 wireless security.TUAWApple to fix iPad Wi-Fi issues originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 11 May 2010 09:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone
David Crane is the founder of Activision, which is currently the 800-lb gorilla of video gaming; it's a huge company with the biggest releases in the world. However, the industry pioneer is getting back to the small stuff. Along with partner Gerry Kitchen, he's started up AppStar Games, and they are working on much smaller titles for the iPhone and iPod touch. Their first title is The Iron Horse for iPhone and iPad, and while it is super simple, the game's metaphor and surprisingly strong atmosphere make it a pretty effective title.
It's about trains (which in and of itself probably appeals to a few of us), and the goal is to hook up train cars to a train as it's moving by tapping on hooks at exactly the right time. The gameplay's simple: you just tap on the hooks when they line up about every five seconds or so. The graphics and sounds really fill in the background, though. The trains are designed on real cars, they move through various beautiful backgrounds, and the sounds of click-clacking on the tracks and the trains hooking up really get you in the mood. OpenFeint integration and special bonus levels can up the ante as well.
There are a few graphical quirks. For example, they went with 2D models for the trains, so when they turn, it breaks the illusion a bit. Iron Horse is far more fun than it has any right to be, though, especially if you're a fan of trains. The full game is US $1.99, and there's a free version to try out on the iPad.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: The Iron Horse originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 11 May 2010 08:00:00 EST. Filed under: MobileMe
MacDailyNews reports an unconfirmed rumor that Apple may soon make MobileMe's services free to all users. MobileMe currently costs US$99 per year for a subscription; it provides cloud storage, email, photo galleries, and syncing of contacts/calendars/bookmarks across Macs, PCs, iPhones, and iPads (not to mention Find My iPhone). While the service has many useful features (some implemented better than others: I'm aiming my stinkeye at you, iDisk), many have balked at the price tag.
Similar storage and email services from competitors like Google and Microsoft come either free of charge or at reduced cost compared to MobileMe; even MobileMe's distant ancestor, iTools, was a free offering back in the day. Of course, MobileMe delivers more iPhone & Mac-friendly syncing than Google does, but at $99 per year, it's a fair bet that few people are taking advantage of everything MobileMe has to offer.
MacDailyNews' source says MobileMe will become free of charge "sooner than later... depends on certain facilities going operational." This almost certainly refers to Apple's new server farm in North Carolina. Aerial footage of Apple's server farm, released in February, showed that the complex's buildings were either mostly or entirely constructed, so the facility may be ready to go online at any time.
I hope this rumor is true, especially the "sooner than later" part -- my MobileMe subscription is due for renewal at the end of this month.

iPhone - Apple - IPad - Canada - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - 360-degree gaming on a projector-equipped iPhone
Filed under: iPhone
Our friends at Joystiq found this one -- it's a jailbroken iPhone hooked up to a picoprojector, with the software using the compass and the accelerometer to determine exactly where the projector is aimed. That brings in a fun augmented reality touch -- you can move the iPhone around real space to determine where a turret is pointed in the virtual one. It's a little harder to explain than to show, but the hardware in the iPhone tells the projector what you're looking at, so moving the iPhone moves the view.
How do we get from this interesting jailbroken solution to a real game? The iPhone hardware needs an upgrade, and best-case scenario is that it gets a projector built into the iPhone itself. There are already phones that have projectors built in, but as I learned at Macworld when I used this projector, the limiter isn't the projector hardware; it's the battery. The power source was as big as the iPhone itself, and even then only lasted about the length of a movie. So it'll be a while, probably, before Apple is convinced to include a projector in the phone, and then delivers hardware that can actually keep it sleek and streamlined.
Until then, this demo makes the old gears go about what's possible with a setup like this. Very cool.

I refer to my calendar a lot during the day, but I don't always have my calendar program running. Most of the time I just want to glance at something to confirm the time/date of an upcoming event, or just double check a date: "What is the last Sunday in May? Oh right, the 30th."
It occurred to me today that I could make life a little easier if I could have my calendar embedded in my Desktop. Those of you who remember Microsoft Windows' "Active Desktop" feature may shudder in fear at the idea because, at least in my experience, Active Desktop was a complete and utter disaster. It never worked well, if you could get it to work at all.
There are extremely geeky ways of doing this but MacOSXHints.com had a simple solution I didn't even know was possible: Fluid.app. Now I've used Fluid.app for a long time, but I never knew what the "Embedded SSB" or "MenuExtra SSB" actually did. Turns out that either of them are a potential solution, not just for calendars, but for any web page.
