- Aussie newspaper selling out ads for 1st iPad edition
Filed under: iPad
The Australian is busy prepping its iPad app, which will deliver issues of the newspaper to subscribers. Thus far, signing up subscribers has gone well; 3 months worth of ads have also been sold, including to big names like IBM and Toyota.
The paper has created an ad package that includes 3 months' worth of category exclusivity on the iPad version, plus spots in the physical paper and online. Developers hope to have video as part of the app at launch, if not very shortly thereafter. One challenge identified by managing editor Grant Holloway has been converting ads from Flash to HTML5.
According to Holloway, "...the iPad won't play Flash and a lot of online ads use Flash, so there are a lot of people who are going to have to become very familiar with HTML5. If they've got their head around it, they'll be able to do cool stuff -- better than anything they can do online." It's not exactly clear what he means by 'online,' but he's excited!
Call it novelty, but I've read more newspaper articles since buying my iPad than I have in who knows how long. Earlier this week I saw that my hometown paper has hired a development firm to create an iPad delivery system. Now that I live so far away, I can't get the Scranton Times, but I still like to know what's going on. An iPad version would fit the bill nicely.
Expect The Australian's app to cost $4.99 per month at launch as "an introductory price." The cost will be reconsidered when version 2 is released.

Переслать - Dear Aunt TUAW: Will Comcast kill my EyeTV?
Dear Aunt TUAW,
Comcast has been telling me that I need to start buying or renting new equipment in order to keep watching my normal expanded basic channels like SyFy, USA, and TNT. I mostly watch TV on my Mac using an EyeTV tuner from Elgato.
How is the Comcast change going to affect my EyeTV? And exactly how shafted am I?
Love and kissies,
Your nephew BruceTUAWDear Aunt TUAW: Will Comcast kill my EyeTV? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 24 May 2010 11:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Unofficial Apple Weblog - Macintosh - Apple - Comcast - ElgatoПереслать - It's official: Steve Jobs will deliver the WWDC keynote
Filed under: WWDC
Apple issued a press release this morning officially announcing that Steve Jobs will deliver the WWDC keynote on June 7th. The sold-out event will take place in San Francisco at the Moscone Center's West building, and Jobs will kick things off at 10:00 AM Pacific. Of course, we'll have plenty of coverage, so be sure to check back.
The question is: What's left for Steve to announce? Gizmodo and Tinhte have probably exposed the new iPhone, though we still haven't seen the final version of iPhone OS 4 up and running. Plus, there are suggestions that the casing Gizmodo showed off wasn't final (you'll notice that the prototype in Vietnam had fewer visible screws).
Of course, it's not entirely about the iPhone. Here are my predictions of what we'll see from Steve at WWDC '10:- iPhone 4th Generation with new A4 processor, more RAM, possibly more storage space and an improved, front-facing camera plus iChat. Tethering via AT&T will be Steve's "One more thing." Release date announced for the end of July.
- iPhone OS 4 release date announced for the end of July.
- iTunes 9.2
- Updated Mac Pro systems (long overdue).
- Mac OS X 10.7 Preview.

Steve Jobs - Apple - iPhone - Moscone Center - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Sort your crashlogs with Hazel
Filed under: Odds and ends, UNIX / BSD
I've been on a bit of a Hazel kick lately. I wrote a short shell script that will sort my Crash Logs.
#!/bin/sh ### Get the name of the app APP=`/bin/echo $1 | /usr/bin/sed 's#_.*##g'` ### make a directory /bin/mkdir -p "$APP" ### move the log into the directory /bin/mv -n "$1" "$APP" ### done! exit 0
Add this rule to the folder ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports. The rules above tell Hazel to only run on crash logs older than today, in case you need to do anything with it such as send it to the developer.

Unix - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Shell script - Berkeley Software Distribution - Operating systemПереслать - TUAW's Daily App: Call of Atlantis
Filed under: iPhone
I am really looking forward to Puzzle Quest 2, since I was such a fan of the first game on XBLA. But until that comes out, Call of Atlantis is a polished gem-matcher that combines match-3 gameplay with a little bit of story and adventure. I believe it started out as a PC game, but you wouldn't be able to tell -- the graphics look like they were designed for the iPhone, and the gameplay fits perfectly on a mobile device.
If you've played any match-3 games, you already know the score here -- switch icons on a board to match up three of the same kind, and those will disappear, bringing more into play. But Call of Atlantis mixes things up a bit by providing items to grab -- the idea on each stage is to get certain parts of a larger item (or special powerup items) to the bottom of the screen, and off the board. Complete all the pieces of the main item and the level is over. Matching four or five of a kind will power up a meter that will help clear the board out, and collecting powerup items like Bombs will clear out part of a board for you as well.
It's simple gameplay, but a strategy quickly unfolds -- do you clear that enticing five of a kind, or go for the quick three right below the item you need to collect? And while there is an overarching story of Gods and Atlantis, complete with art and voiceover, it's just icing on the cake of sweet, sweet gameplay. Call of Atlantis is a steal at 99 cents -- it's a budget title that feels and plays like a much more expensive game.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Call of Atlantis originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 24 May 2010 08:00:00 EST. "Lace up your shoes (oh, ay, oh, ay!) / Here's how we do / Run baby run / Don't ever look back"
Are you like me? Do you like the running? Do you like running with your iPhone? I love to run, and I need music. Just the right song can turn a mediocre run into something transcendental.
But what was it that separated the motivating songs from the energy-sapping ones? Turns out, it's at least partly the beat. A song that pounds along with my stride is always welcome. For a spell, I tried finding songs that would do that. I even checked out Podrunner podcasts--the 'casts are set to a particular beats per minute (BPM) that you can choose. Problem was, I wasn't that excited about the music. Sure, it was the right tempo, but I wanted my songs.TUAWApp review: Cadence keeps the beat originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 23 May 2010 19:30:00 EST. Переслать - Soda machine controlled by iPhone app
Filed under: iPhone
Recent MIT comp sci grad Chris Varenhorst found a cheap soda machine on Craigslist a while back, and he decided to do what any self-respecting computer science student would do nowadays: hook it up to the Internet. He created wiring to make the machine believe it had credits whenever a circuit was connected, and then wired that to an Internet service. He also created an iPhone app that sent messages to the server, so he could press a button from anywhere and make the machine dispense a cold drink.
Unfortunately, he says he would sometimes press the button while out and about, and come back to his apartment to find a warm beer sitting in the machine. He's graduated now and moving out, so Varenhorst and his roommates decided to sell the machine on eBay, with part of the funds going to charity. It sold for just $76 (not too surprising -- who really needs a soda machine sitting around their house?), but the project itself is very cool.TUAWSoda machine controlled by iPhone app originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 23 May 2010 18:30:00 EST. Переслать - devsugar: A better way to share ad-hoc builds
Filed under: Developer
Hey, Dave Howell. This post is for you. Dave's company Avatron is in the midst of a beta program for its newest application, Air Display. Steve Sande took a first look at Air Display not too long ago, and I've been messing with it too. The thing is this: Avatron is still sending out zipped application files and separate mobile provisions. As I told Dave, there's a much easier and better way to do Ad Hoc under the 3.2 and later Gold Master iPhone OS SDK.
Ad Hoc provides a way to distribute signed, secure applications outside of App Store channels. With Ad Hoc, you can send your applications to up to 100 registered devices and run those applications using a special kind of mobile provision that allows the applications to execute under the iPhone's FairPlay restrictions. Ad Hoc distribution is especially useful for beta testing and for submitting review applications to news sites and magazines.TUAWdevsugar: A better way to share ad-hoc builds originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 23 May 2010 17:30:00 EST. Переслать - Talkcast tonight: chronicling the first shots in the Google/Apple Wars
Filed under: Podcasts
This was the week that Google started to get nasty. Throughout the Google I/O 2010 developer conference, Apple was the target of a number of cheap shots as well as some comments that were right on target. Starting tonight at 10 PM EDT, the TUAW crew invites anyone who isn't watching the Lost series finale to join the TUAW Talkcast to chat about Google, Apple, and anything else that happened during the week.
To participate on TalkShoe, you can use the browser-only client, the embedded Facebook app, or the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the "TalkShoe Web" button on our profile page at 10 pm Sunday. To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (take advantage of your free cellphone weekend minutes if you like): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8.
If you've got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac, you can connect via the free Gizmo or X-Lite SIP clients; basic instructions are here.
Note: For those who want to listen to the show on iPads or iPhones without calling in, you can try this MP3 streaming link once the show begins -- we're not 100% sure it will work, but do let us know.TUAWTalkcast tonight: chronicling the first shots in the Google/Apple Wars originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 23 May 2010 17:00:00 EST. Переслать - When Seesmic met Evernote
Filed under: iPhone
Evernote has announced Seesmic integration over on its blog -- often while reading Twitter on my iPhone, I'll see people tweeting links to videos or long pages that I just don't have the time to check out over my EDGE connection. In the past, I've favorited the tweets, but that's not an ideal solution, especially since anyone on Twitter can see my favorites (and thus see what I've been reading). Enter Seesmic and Evernote: now, when you see a tweet on Seesmic, you'll be able to send it directly into Evernote, and save it there along with the rest of your clippings and notes on the service. Then, when I go back to my MacBook, I can pull up those saved tweets, and read whatever I missed.
There are lots of other uses for a connection like this, I'm sure (and a few other ways to solve my problem -- Tweetie and Instapaper is another solution). But if you're a regular Seesmic and/or Evernote user and are looking for a way to more easily integrate Twitter into the "outsourced memory" that is your Evernote database, it's your lucky day.TUAWWhen Seesmic met Evernote originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 23 May 2010 16:30:00 EST.
