- Report: 30% of netbook shoppers bought an iPad
Filed under: iPad
Here's an interesting bit of information compiled by Retrevo.com. They recently polled over 1,000 shoppers (distributed across age, gender and income level) who were either considering buying netbooks and iPads or already own them. The results were telling -- although, as Jeremy Toeman of Stage Two points out, this is the same research firm that played down consumer demand for the iPad in the first place, so bring your own grain of salt.
When asked, "Did you hold off on buying a netbook when the iPad was announced in January," a full 70% answered yes -- with a qualifier. Only 30% went ahead with the purchase, while 40% bought a netbook (the remaining 30% purchased a netbook without considering an iPad). Of course, grabbing 30% of a market with a 1.0 device is impressive by any reckoning.
In another question, Retrevo asked, "Are you planning on buying a netbook or an iPad?" Here the response was very clear cut, as 78% claimed that they were leaning towards an iPad.
There was more to the survey, of course (you can read all of the results here), but for me the most interesting finding was the following. When asked, "What was the main feature that attracted you to a netbook," the majority of respondents -- 54% -- answered "Small and light." I always assumed that cost was the deciding factor, but price was identified by only 20% of subjects (battery life pulled 19% and "other" grabbed the remaining 7%). If weight and portability are the most sought-after criteria, the iPad will win that battle hands down.
It would be interesting to see what type of functionality most consumers want (internet access, email, etc.). Most of us are biased Apple fans, but what would push you away from an iPad and towards a netbook?

iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPad - UstreamПереслать - AAPL passes Microsoft to reach 2nd on US market cap list
Filed under: Apple Financial
We expected it to happen eventually, but not quite this fast: Apple's market capitalization now exceeds that of longtime rival Microsoft. As of the 4pm ET market close today, Apple's total share value bests Microsoft's by nearly US$3 billion -- Apple stands at US$222.5 billion, while Microsoft is at US$219.53 billion. You may see some further fluctuation in aftermarket trading.
This means that, at least in terms of market capitalization, the only US company worth more than Apple is Exxon, at US$278 billion. Apple surpassed Walmart's market cap last month, and Henry Blodget pointed out this morning that Apple was already ahead of Microsoft via the 'enterprise value' metric (accounting for the companies' relative amounts of cash and debt).
Oddly, Apple's leapfrogging of Microsoft's market cap has had less to do with Apple's stock and more to do with Microsoft's; over the past 60 days or so, Apple's market cap has grown by less than US$10 billion, while Microsoft's has plummeted by almost $40 billion. No matter which way you look at it, though, Apple's surpassing of Microsoft's market cap is, just as the New York Times says, an absolutely stunning turnaround.
Not bad for a company that was all but on its deathbed in the late 1990s.TUAWAAPL passes Microsoft to reach 2nd on US market cap list originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 26 May 2010 16:20:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

This is what e-magazines should have always been. A sparkling layout, embedded animations, video and audio. Compared to what Wired has done, the other magazines offered, like Time and Popular Science, feel pretty much like tarted up PDF files.
Adobe created the translation for the iPad for Conde Nast, publisher of Wired. Originally, it was going to be Flash based, but when Steve Jobs put the clamps on that, Adobe re-did everything in Apple-approved Objective-C.
Wired for iPad, released today, is a dazzler. There are 3D renderings you control by moving your hand, videos that look crisp, and some interactive features that are very helpful in getting a full understanding of the subject matter. I especially enjoyed the tour of the Mars missions, the tribute to the Industrial Light and Magic special effects factory, and the interactive view of what is inside Worcestershire sauce. Many of the ads are interactive as well, finally giving readers a reason to learn more about a product.

Looks like Foxconn's troubles are far from over -- hiring an exorcist must not have worked, because another worker jumped to their death last week. That's the 10th such employee death at the plant where many of Apple's parts are manufactured. Foxconn's CEO made a statement earlier this week saying that "we are not a sweatshop," and promising that the company will "soon be able to stabilize this situation."
The company has also starting hanging nets around factories to try and save jumpers (that's pretty grisly), and they've asked all employees to sign a pledge to help stop the problem, which Gawker has obtained. The pledge asks workers to seek help before doing something to harm themselves, and to help those around them who need it.
Foxconn claims it's not a sweatshop, but reports say the company is asking employees to work 60 hours of overtime a month (far over the legal limit of 36 hours of overtime), and paying only about $132 a month. Clearly something is wrong at the company that Apple depends on for much of its manufacturing labor.TUAWAnother death at Foxconn, CEO makes statement originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 26 May 2010 15:30:00 EST. Filed under: iPad
There's good news for iPad customers in Australia. Vodafone announced today that they will offer an unlimited data plan for the iPad 3G. Here's the deal: For AUS$49.95 (approximately US$41 as of this writing) per month, users can enjoy unlimited data. Not bad!
The rest of their plans have been published, too. They start at AUD9.95 per month for 250MB of data (you'll eat through that in no time) and go from there. Note that, in addition to the unlimited plan, customers can get 6GB of data for $100 expiring every 180 days, or 12GB for $150, expiring every 365 days.
The terms and conditions note that you can't use data to make use of peer-to-peer services. It sounds like a good deal for our friends down under. Enjoy your new iPads!

Shocking news; we're absolutely gobsmacked with surprise. Boy Genius Report fans the flames of the widely-telegraphed WWDC rumored iPhone revision story with a one-line tidbit: AT&T employees have been informed that the phone is actually coming, and may in fact be on sale in the month of June.
MacRumors points out that this corresponds neatly with a previously-BGR-reported block on employee vacations for June affecting the cell carrier. Got to make sure those stores are staffed! Back at the end of April, Mashable hinted that the new phones might go on sale during the developer conference itself, which would be quite a way to kick off the summer.
Meanwhile, Jim Dalrymple at The Loop aligns his crystal ball with Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster on the topic of a possible Verizon iPhone: neither the bearded Mac maven or the tie-wearing Wall Street analyst expect to see a big red Apple phone anytime in the immediate future. Daring Fireball also notes that Matt Drance at AppleOutsider has done a nice job assessing many of the technical and business reasons why a VZW/Apple teamup isn't likely to appear soon.
Everybody ready for June? It's going to be a scorcher.

IPhone - Apple - AT&T - Unofficial Apple Weblog - WWDCПереслать - US Department of Justice to investigate Apple over iTunes
Filed under: Apple Corporate
The New York Times is reporting that an "early stage" investigation at the US Department of Justice (DoJ) is looking at whether Apple is using its considerable position in the online music sales business to hinder Amazon's efforts. Specifically, the probe will focus on whether Apple unfairly leveraged iTunes to deny Amazon's MP3 store exclusive access to songs.
It's been alleged that Apple threatened to withhold their typical promotional activities from labels who continued to offer exclusives to Amazon. Those songs would still see sales in iTunes, of course, but significantly less without Apple's promotional efforts behind them.
Back in March, Billboard reported that Apple's iTunes team had tried to talk publishers out of participating in Amazon's low-priced, exclusive "Daily Deals" promotions, which often motivated labels to offer Amazon first dibs on major releases at a significant discount. This allegedly prompted Apple to threaten to pull advertising if participation continued. Several labels supposedly relented and abandoned the Amazon deal as a result.
You'll remember that the DoJ also recently began an inquiry into a clause in the iPhone OS 4 SDK that bans the porting of software originally written for Adobe's Flash, Sun's Java or Microsoft's Silverlight/Mono to the iPhone OS. What a mess!

Apple - Microsoft - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPhone - iTunesПереслать - A tale of two iPad weather apps
Filed under: iPad
Since Apple stripped the iPhone weather app from the iPad, it left the door open for 3rd parties to do their thing. They've done just that, and I'd like to spotlight two apps that come at weather from very different places.
We've looked briefly at both these apps. Our Victor Agreda Jr. used and liked WeatherBug Elite, and Erica Sadun took a quick look at Weather HD in April.
Let's start with WeatherBug Elite for iPad and look more closely. The app is free, and has a compelling display on the iPad screen. It is the more conventional app of the two, with radar and cloud cover overlays, animation, severe weather alerts from the National Weather Service, Extended 7 day and hourly forecasts, and webcams for most locations that show you a semi-live view of the current weather. You can save multiple locations, and get to them with a tap. As I do a lot of landscape photography, I really appreciate the infrared and visible satellite maps, that show you cloud cover down to the street level. The app works in portrait or landscape mode, and it can cache weather data for off-line viewing. I think this app is for serious weather consumers, and I have found it reliable and up to date. There are also versions for Windows and Macs, and an iPhone version. Strangely, the iPhone version sells for $0.99, while the iPad version is free. You can also get a free version for the iPhone, but it has ads.TUAWA tale of two iPad weather apps originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 26 May 2010 12:00:00 EST. Might and Card: Golden Edition [US$4.99, iPad only] is not Carcassonne. This much an unnamed member of the UWinGame Dev Team wanted to make clear when he or she provided TUAW with a reviewer code for the game:
I also would like to take this opportunity to express some more info about this game. Some said our game looks much like Carcassonne. Here I want to claim it totally wrong. This version we have released was just a base, and we will add many more features and packages to make it even more beautiful and interesting.

Carcassonne - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - Game - iPhone Dev TeamПереслать - Analyst: 40% of AT&T customers may head to Verizon if there's a vPhone
Filed under: iPhone
If the rumors are true and Verizon does eventually get to carry the iPhone, AT&T's CEO should probably be a little more worried than he is. Analyst Drake Johnstone says that if Verizon does carry Apple's smartphone, 40% of its customers are likely ready to jump ship for another carrier. That's 6 million of AT&T's estimated 15 million customers, all yearning to break free of their bonds to AT&T.
That sounds high to me, and indeed, Johnstone admits that, as time goes on, that number will probably be much lower. Not only are AT&T's plans tough to get out of (and therefore not really worth the trouble to switch), but even if you do, they've just upped their termination fees, which will put another roadblock in the way. And Johnstone also says that AT&T's coverage is getting better by the day, so by the time Verizon does have the iPhone, AT&T's technical problems might not be so bad.
Even if the number isn't quite as high as 40%, iPhone exclusivity has been a huge boon for AT&T in the past, and losing it won't be good for the company. If Apple announces a Verizon deal later this year, investors will be keeping a huge watch on what AT&T ends up dealing with.TUAWAnalyst: 40% of AT&T customers may head to Verizon if there's a vPhone originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 26 May 2010 09:00:00 EST. iPhone - AT&T - Verizon - Apple - SmartphoneПереслать - TUAW's Daily App: Space Storm
Filed under: iPhone
Space Storm is about as conventional as space shooters get; enemies come into the screen from the right, and your ship flies from the left, blowing things out of the sky with a few different weapons and picking up health or power-ups along the way. In this case, though, conventional is good. The game feels right, and the dual-stick setup will have you navigating your ship around enemies and bullets and even slowing time down with occasional power-ups, in no time.
Boss levels add a little variety to the mix, but basically, it's fly and shoot. It's very simple and pretty darn fun. OpenFeint adds some replayability to the somewhat short game, but a shooter is a shooter. As of this writing, the game is free on a promotion, but if you enjoy a good space shooter, it's definitely worth a couple of bucks.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Space Storm originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 26 May 2010 08:00:00 EST.
