- TUAW's Daily App: Crazy Test
Some of the best apps are born from the wackiest ideas, and while Crazy Test probably isn't one of the best apps on the App Store, it is a wacky idea. Tactile Entertainment has been working on their Pocket Creatures title, but while goofing off (I suppose), they've put together this WarioWare-inspired bit of silliness. Basically, Crazy Test consists of a series of absurd mini games; some of them have you swiping the touchscreen in various ways, some of them have you tapping in certain places, and some even have you shaking the iPhone or iPod touch. Each "test" gives you a goal and then only a quick few seconds to figure out how to do it correctly.
The only caveat I'd put on this one is that Crazy Test really is crazy, so come with a sense of humor. The app has quite a bit of silly, nonsensical violence and various bathroom-related jokes. There's nothing you couldn't see on TV these days, but if you're easily offended by childish jokes, steer clear (Tactile's Denmark-based European sensibilities probably play a factor as well). Otherwise, Crazy Test is an amusing time. While it seems like there might not be too much variety at first, the mini games eventually start showing off new wrinkles the more you play with them. It's not for everybody, but if you enjoy a little absurdity with your iPhone gaming, you'll find it's well worth the buck.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Crazy Test originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 14 May 2010 08:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone
Well, this is interesting. Our twitter follower @chenks points out that, hidden in the metadata of a picture taken with his OS 4.0-enabled iPhone, there is a title stating that the picture came from the phone's "Back Camera." Of course, if the phone currently has a back camera, there's a possibility that it could, in the future, have a "Side Camera," or more appropriately, a "Front Camera."
We're being facetious, of course. This certainly seems like yet another hint that the next version of the iPhone (expected sometime next month) will have a front facing camera; that's not only a long-awaited feature for the iPhone faithful, but it was also seen on that lost iPhone prototype not long ago.
So, at this point, it's more or less a terribly-kept secret that the next iPhone will finally have a front facing camera. The question is: will you use it? I'd rather not have my ugly mug going out across the wires every time someone calls me, but I suppose there are a few applications (possibly including an official iChat Mobile application) where it might come in handy.TUAWiPhone image metadata hints at more cameras on the next iPhone originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 14 May 2010 03:00:00 EST. IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - iChat - MetadataПереслать - Rumor: Apple building Facebook into iPhone OS
Business Insider says a source has told them that Apple is working on integrating Facebook directly into the next iPhone OS. This would mean the use of Facebook Connect to bring contacts directly into the phone (which we've heard as a rumor before, and which would make sense, considering that the Android OS already does that). BI also suggests that Apple might be working on features like showing Facebook pictures of your contacts when they call or building the Facebook API into the official iPhone SDK. This would allow app creators to use Facebook information in their apps directly through the iPhone's code interface.
It's all rumor and speculation at this point, so don't get (too) freaked out about Facebook's privacy problems spreading off to the iPhone just yet. However, it's true that Facebook is quickly becoming one of the Web's biggest sources of personal information, and qualms about privacy aside, Apple would do well to at least catch up to Android and start getting the hooks into the main OS.TUAWRumor: Apple building Facebook into iPhone OS originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 14 May 2010 01:00:00 EST. iPhone - Facebook Connect - Apple - Facebook - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Apple //e running source code loaded from an iPad
Stick with us here -- this is complicated but cool. So, Stewart Smith happened to see online that the Panic Software guys had an old Apple IIe (sorry, //e) sitting around their office, and he emailed to ask them if they could possibly use it to run an old text animation that he'd created for a song a while back. Being the considerate guys that they are, they agreed. There was a problem, though: Stewart's code was meant to be played on the old cassette deck source, and they didn't have one. "What did we have?" they ask, and the answer is, "an iPad."
You can see the results in video over on their site, and they are magical. There are a couple of amazing things here: one, that the old source code can be "read" just as easily coming out of the iPad's audio port as it was when coming out of cassette tapes back in the day, and two, that the //e runs it so well. Let's also remember that we're watching it happen across the Internet in full audio and video quality, possibly even on an iPad itself. For all of the new and shiny that Apple has brought us recently, you almost forget how much history is building here, and it's somewhat surprising that a connection can be made between then and now so easily and elegantly.TUAWApple //e running source code loaded from an iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 13 May 2010 23:32:00 EST. Переслать - Hands-on with Elgato EyeTV Hybrid and EyeTV app for iPhone
Filed under: Reviews
Elgato Systems has been in the business of turning Macs into TVs for quite a while now. The company's most powerful USB digital TV tuner, the EyeTV Hybrid (US$149.95), is an amazing little dongle that comes equipped with EyeTV 3 tuner / recorder software for Mac. The EyeTV Hybrid has gone through a few iterations, many of which we've previously reviewed on TUAW.
I'm not much of a TV viewer; my tastes tend to run towards The Food Network and Fringe, so I don't spend hours sitting in my La-Z-Boy recliner flipping the remote. After using the EyeTV Hybrid and experimenting with the US$4.99 EyeTV app for iPhone, I was considering changing my mind. Most content available on TV is still dreck, but EyeTV made it incredibly simple to watch and record on my Mac, and to send that content to my iPhone when I'm not near the office.
Read on for a hands-on review of the Elgato EyeTV Hybrid and the EyeTV iPhone app (version 1.0.2) to see how they worked during my time with them.

Переслать - Found Footage: Swarovski crystal Apple rainbow logo iPhone case
Filed under: Found Footage
Going down the Apple history path for the second time today, we thought those of you who might have a soft spot in your heart for the old "rainbow" Apple logo would love this piece of bling.
It's an iPhone case (works with 3G / 3GS) that is covered with more than 1,000 Swarovski crystal bits for that extra sparkly look. For only US$184, you can be one of only 100 people on the entire planet Earth to own one of these ostentatious blingy things. It's sparkly! Did I mention that it's sparkly?
If this got your attention and you must have one, head on over to Distinctive Style to nab one of these limited edition glittery rainbows for your very own. You know you want one. After all, it is "perfect for parties and balls," and you'll be able to "represent yourself with luxury & confidence."

Переслать - Create keyboard shortcuts to jump to Safari 4 tabs directly
Filed under: AppleScript
My friend Steve (no, not that Steve) just solved a problem I've had for awhile now: how to jump to a specific tab in Safari using the keyboard. Turns out that it's possible, and it's free, and it works pretty well. What else could you ask for?
The solution comes from Paul Kretek's website where he outlines how to use FastScripts to assign keyboard shortcuts to specific tabs. Paul and Steve both want to use Safari, but they like Firefox's method of numbering tabs 1-9 used together with the command (⌘) key . By default, Safari uses ⌘+[1-9] to jump to bookmarks on your bookmark bar, which I use all of the time so I'm planning to make keyboard shortcuts for tabs control+1-9 instead. (⌘+0 [zero] is used to set the zoom back to original size.)
Who knows, I might change my mind. I had found myself trying to use ⌘+[1-9] for tab switching in Safari because I was already used to tab switching that way in iTerm. The only bookmark keyboard short I use with any frequency is ⌘+1 which I use to invoke Quix which I've written about previously and absolutely cannot work without.
Paul's instructions are very thorough, and although they may look a little complicated, it's something you only need to setup once. Also note that FastScripts is free for up to 10 shortcuts, after that it's US$14.95 for unlimited use.TUAWCreate keyboard shortcuts to jump to Safari 4 tabs directly originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 13 May 2010 17:00:00 EST. Переслать - Let's buy an iPad at Walmart
Filed under: iPad
In an interview with Gary Severson, Walmart's senior vice president of entertainment for US stores, Bloomberg learned that the retail giant intends to carry the iPad sometime in 2010. "We anticipate being able to have the iPad later this year," Severson said, without providing any specifics.
Walmart has been making a push towards selling more electronics, adding more and more TVs, Blu-Ray players and so on to their shelves. Right now, Apple and Best Buy are the only US dealers selling iPads.
It seems to me that Apple would hardly need the push that a spot in Walmart would offer. Apple managed to move 1 million units in less than a month, and stock is still limited online and at Best Buy and Apple retail locations.
Perhaps the goal is to get an iPad physically in front of more people. Walmart is, after all, the world's largest retailer. Surely there are customers without access to an Apple Store or Best Buy who do have a Walmart in town.
We'll let you know when these go on sale, but if you see one in the meantime, drop us a line.

Переслать - Ngmoco buys Stumptown Game Machine, EA and Gameloft report revenue growth
A few news items from the business side of iPhone games this week, courtesy of the folks over at Mobile Entertainment. Ngmoco has purchased developer Stumptown Game Machine, creators of their popular Touch Pets Dogs release. Unfortunately, there's no information on how much the deal was worth, but it's a pretty obvious pickup for Ngmoco, which is working on building a stable of freemium titles and developers to produce them.
My money's still on an Ngmoco/Booyah deal at some point, too -- Ngmoco has the money to pick up a few other smaller developers thanks to funding, and Booyah has the app and the dedicated users that Ngmoco wants. The two companies have already collaborated with a MyTown promotion on Ngmoco's We Rule, but I can see it going farther eventually.
Elsewhere, EA Mobile reported a big growth in profits over the last quarter, up 12% year-over-year. The company attributes revenues to the iPhone and, soon, the iPad -- EA had two of the top three grossing titles as the iPad launched in Need for Speed and Scrabble, even though those sales will count towards next quarter's profits. While indie games have found their own place on the iPhone, many of the biggest titles are still produced by larger studios like EA.
Gamevil also saw a nice jump in profits (up a whopping 99% from last year), and also credits its growth to the App Store, supported by Android and other mobile phone markets. Zenonia and its sequel were drivers there, along with sales overseas and the company's Baseball Superstars title. Lots and lots of sales coming out of the App Store, and I'm sure a new phone in June won't hurt things at all.TUAWNgmoco buys Stumptown Game Machine, EA and Gameloft report revenue growth originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 13 May 2010 16:00:00 EST. iWork users rejoice! Apple is updating Pages, Numbers and Keynote for the iPad. A quick check at the app store or through iTunes should get you all sparkly and new.
In Pages, one of the big fixes is that the tool and ruler and now available in Landscape view. That's a biggy because you had to be in portrait view to see any of those tools in version 1.0.
Apple has also added some additional language support in the apps, and done some work to get better compatibility with Microsoft Word documents. Переслать - UI changes in Apple's Mail beta
Filed under: MobileMe
The surprise announcement of a beta version of Apple's browser-based MobleMe Mail has users curious about the service's future. While we await our invitations, we compared the only beta screenshot we've found to Mail's current appearance. Here's what we found, starting from the top.
Toolbar
The new toolbar is blue and features fewer icons. The Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Photos, iDisk, Find and Settings icons currently on the far left have been replaced with a single MobileMe Cloud icon. Perhaps it produces a drop-down revealing the other services. It seems unlikely that Apple would release a public beta that's so incomplete so as not to include links to services beyond email, but it is a Mail beta, so Apple is likely focusing on the functioning of that service before providing links to the rest.
Check out the gallery below for side-by-side screenshots.

Переслать - Get your Mac history lessons on Netflix
Filed under: Apple History
Although there quite a few old guys like myself who have been around since the early days of the Mac, there are a heck of a lot more people who have switched to the platform in the recent past. As such, those new to the platform might want a refresher on Mac history.
In 2008, the documentary Welcome to Macintosh appeared on the scene, introducing a new generation of Mac fans to some of the early luminaries in the Mac universe like Andy Hertzfeld and Guy Kawasaki. At Macworld Expo 2009, another documentary premiered called Macheads. This second film was tagged "a fanboy documentary," and it explored the good and bad sides of Mac love through interviews with hard core fans like Violet Blue.
I received a tip yesterday just before the start of TUAW TV Live that Macheads is now available in the Netflix Watch Instantly category along with Welcome to Macintosh. That's right -- you can watch either of the movies instantly on your Mac, or download the free Netflix iPad app and watch 'em on your newest Apple gear. Having lived through all of this history, I hadn't watched either of the movies, but since I'm a Netflix subscriber and the movies are included in the cost of admission, I've now seen them both.
Neither of the documentaries warrant repeated viewings, but they're definitely worth seeing at least once if you're a Mac fan. If you're a Netflix customer, you can now get 'em both on demand for no extra cost.TUAWGet your Mac history lessons on Netflix originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 13 May 2010 14:00:00 EST. Переслать - Latest iPhone prototype leaked by a duo of phone dealers
Filed under: iPhone
The Associated Press is reporting today that two Vietnamese phone dealers may be responsible for the most recent 4G iPhone leak. When mobile phone accessory salesman Tran Manh Hiep heard that someone was showing off a prototype iPhone in a Ho Chi Minh City cafe, he rushed there with his video camera to see it. The AP notes that another dealer, whose identity is unknown, had the phone. How he came into it is still a mystery.
Many suspected that the phone was a knock-off, as that region is rife with fakes from China. Hiep insists that it's genuine, as "[my Mac] recognized it as an Apple product" when connected. Other than the lack of visible screws we saw on the unit Gizmodo bought, it's virtually the same. There's no word on whether an investigation will be launched.
Today, another image has surfaced from Vietnam supposedly showing the phone running iPhone OS 4.
It's amazing to me that two devices have now gotten past Apple's legendary security, and even more so that one ended up far across the globe. I'll say one thing: it sure takes the fun out of the official announcements.TUAWLatest iPhone prototype leaked by a duo of phone dealers originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 13 May 2010 13:30:00 EST. Переслать - Is the Apple TV on life support?
It seems so. The Apple TV was announced with some fanfare in 2006, and it's been pretty much downhill since then. Sales have been sluggish and new features are coming out very slowly.
As it is, the US$229.00 Apple TV allows you to buy Movies and TV shows through the iTunes Store, look at MobileMe galleries if you subscribe to that service, and play music from your iTunes library. There are links to YouTube, and your iPhoto library. You can also stream internet radio stations and movie trailers.
In the years since 2007, when the Apple TV went on sale, other consumer electronics companies have stepped up and pretty much trumped Apple's solution.TUAWIs the Apple TV on life support? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 13 May 2010 13:00:00 EST. Переслать - Dear Aunt TUAW: How do I print from my iPad?
Dear Aunt TUAW,
I'm trying to figure out how to print from my iPad. I use mine, which is an awesome 64GB WiFi+3G system, for school and work. A 16GB Wi-Fi iPad is the only computer my mother has. My mom does have a wireless printer at home connected to my Dad's computer.
We both use Windows (XP and 7 respectively) and HP printers.
I've been round and round in the App Store and can't make sense out of all of the so-called printer apps in it. Help!
Kisses and cuddles,
Your Dear Nephew Jeremy

Переслать - Adobe to Apple: We love you, but...
The Apple/Adobe cage match continues with a new campaign from Adobe. We first noticed it on Engadget this morning. It begins with the simple statement "We [heart] Apple" and goes on to say, "We love Flash and HTML 5. We love our 3 million developers. We love authoring code only once. We love all platforms and devices."
It then describes what Adobe doesn't love, including "...anybody taking away our freedom to choose what you create, how you create it and what you experience on the web." After clicking through the ad, the user is brought to a page entitled "We [heart] choice" which features a letter from Adobe's founders, Chuck Geschke and John Warnock. Some choice passages include:
"If the web fragments into closed systems, if companies put content and applications behind walls, some indeed may thrive - but their success will come at the expense of the very creativity and innovation that has made the Internet a revolutionary force...We believe that consumers should be able to freely access their favorite content and applications, regardless of what computer they have, what browser they like, or what device suits their needs. No company - no matter how big or how creative - should dictate what you can create, how you create it, or what you can experience on the web."
In Adobe's view, Apple is telling developers "it's my way or the highway." Apple, on the other hand, believes that Adobe is clinging out outdated, proprietary tools. The fervor began when the original iPhone failed to support Flash (both the iPhone and iPad still don't) and the gloves came off when Steve Jobs published his "thoughts on Flash." Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen responded in a matter of hours, and the public bickering has continued since.
In addition to the web ad, Adobe also has a full page ad in the Washington Post today. Their opinions are so diametrically opposed, it's hard to see how this conflict will come to a resolution.
Thanks to reader Jeff Gates for his independent tip on this story!TUAWAdobe to Apple: We love you, but... originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 13 May 2010 11:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Переслать - Apple releases new iPad TV commercial
Filed under: iPad
Apple has released a new iPad commercial titled "What is iPad?" This ad takes quite a different tone from the first iPad television commercial that premiered during the Oscars. The new commercial is more "in your face" in the way that a gangster is when he lets you know that your eyes were mistaken when they saw that man pushed off the ledge -- "He tripped." The gruff narrator starts out by asking "What is iPad?" He then proceeds to answer his own question. "iPad is thin. iPad is beautiful," he tells you. The ad goes on to show the iPad in a variety of locations (including on a moped).
The imagery and composition of the shots does make this one of Apple's coolest ads in a long time. It's a welcome departure from the dotty iPhone ads that have been starting to get on my nerves.
The ad ends with the narrator saying, "It's already a revolution. And it's only just begun." The confidence and mob-like authority of his voice leads me to believe that I wouldn't argue over anything he said about the iPad for fear of getting shanked in some alley. This guy wants you to buy an iPad, and you'd better -- or else. Me? I'm going out right now to buy two more, just in case.

Filed under: iPhone, iPod touch, App Review, iPad
Keltis is a relatively new marquee family of board games - in Europe, at least - with a somewhat meandering history. The series started as the Lost Cities card game, which evolved into the original board game in the series, Keltis. That game won the Spiel des Jahres, Germany's highest board game honor, in 2008. Since then, there have been two expansions: a card game version (different from the original Lost Cities card game) and, most recently, a new board game called Keltis Oracle. U.S. board gamers will most likely recognize the Keltis games in the similar Lost Cities: The Board Game. Are you wondering why the European version of the game made it into your iDevice? Because the developers in Tribeflame are based in Finland.
In any case, the universal app (US$4.99) that's now available on the iPad and iPhone (and iPod touch) is the latest Keltis game. Is it the greatest? To some, maybe. It's certainly the most player-friendly of the batch, and it looks good on the iPad screen. The game works, but as you can see in the galleries below, it's crowded when packed into the iPhone's 480 x 320 pixel screen. Read on to see what the Oracle can do for you.

Obama Pacman's got a few cool paintings by an artist named John Haasl. The unique thing about these paintings is that Haasl created them exclusively with the iPad. While a lot of the talk around the iPad has centered on the device as a content consumer, content creation is definitely easier in one big area with a much larger touchscreen, and of course, that's art. Not only does the extra screen space help out would-be artists, but the processing power makes things quick and easy, too.
Haasl is using ArtStudio for iPad for his work, and there's other good software available as well (SketchBook Pro is another popular app, though it's a little more expensive, with ArtStudio on sale for just a buck). Haasl says that he takes about two days to put a painting together, and it's totally a hobby -- his day job is in IT.
It's very cool, anyway. It will also be interesting to see what professional artists end up doing with the iPad's screen, and if some of the new interfaces for art make their way back to traditional computers.TUAWHobby artist creates paintings on the iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 13 May 2010 09:00:00 EST. Paint - IPad - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Art - Visual ArtsПереслать - TUAW's Daily App: Silent Hunter Mobile
Filed under: iPhone
The Silent Hunter series is largely accepted as the pinnacle of submarine simulation. The PC and console games are pretty much the best way to feel like you're in charge of a real old-school submarine. Ubisoft currently owns the license, and they've now released an iPhone version of the brand, which has you piloting a German U-boat around the North Sea in 1939. It lacks most of the depth (pun intended, sorry) that Silent Hunter is known for; the game is basically a shooting gallery, and while there is a bit of strategy in ship placement, the plan is mostly to kill the other side before they kill you.
Still, it's fun, and except for a little bit of lag in the controls, it plays pretty well. You can send your sub up or down in the water (make sure to stay below when you get close to the escort you're stalking) and fire torpedos at any targets you spot. The game's campaign mode has 12 different missions, and each one offers up a nice set of progressions, from just hunting down merchant ships to taking on destroyers, on up into anti-air combat. You can earn XP to upgrade your sub and its parts, but the gameplay doesn't change much; you pretty much just navigate to the right spot, and then open fire at the right time.
The graphics are presentable on the iPhone, but the music is actually excellent. All in all, the game is definitely worth a go at US $1.99 (which is what it's on sale for in the App Store right now). You won't find anywhere near the level of complicated and subtle gameplay that the larger versions of Silent Hunter have, but if you just want to line up a destroyer in your sights and yell, "Torpedo away!", Silent Hunter Mobile does the trick.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Silent Hunter Mobile originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 13 May 2010 08:00:00 EST.
