  • Yahoo!: iPad users skew male and middle-aged

    Filed under:

Yahoo!'s mobile blog has shared some interesting demographic data about the iPad users they've seen so far. Some of the results are unsurprising. Given that the iPad is still in its youthful days, the users tend to match the typical early adopter profile: male, older, and wealthy enough to afford and use a cutting-edge piece of consumer technology. Compared to the average Yahoo! user, iPad users on Yahoo! skew higher in the 30-54 age range, peaking between 35 and 44.

In terms of interests, Yahoo! notices that iPad users on its sites go for Flickr more than anything else, which they say lines up with the iPad as a content consumption device. The Finance, News, and Sports sites also got more traffic than the rest of the network (which, again, makes sense with a male 30-54 audience). And Yahoo! also finds that many iPad users also have iPhones -- nearly half of them had visited Yahoo! with an iPhone previously.

They're also finding that even though international users are getting the iPad late, a good portion of them didn't bother waiting -- 10% of traffic from the iPad audience comes from overseas. Interesting. Of course, this is only looking at those iPad users who have visited Yahoo! sites, and certainly these numbers are probably a little different from the iPad's audience in general. But as a pretty large cross-section, these numbers mostly match up to expectations.

  • AT&T's original deal on iPhone was for five years

    Filed under:

It's what we thought... until the Wall Street Journal told us we were wrong. It's what USA Today originally reported, although nobody else was ever able to confirm it... until now. Nilay Patel at Engadget has unearthed some 2008 filings in a 2007 class-action lawsuit that clarify the matter: the AT&T/Apple deal for exclusive domestic service on the iPhone, which has caused much wailing and gnashing of teeth, was originally set for a five-year term. That would put the earliest appearance of a Verizon iPhone into the summer of 2012 -- assuming that there wasn't any reason for one or the other party to break off the agreement.

Those disclosures are a couple of years old now, and the circumstances may have changed a bit (exclusivity may have been extended since then), but at least there's some grounding for what the original half-decade setup was intended to be. Even though recent analyst musings led to the surmise that the iPad's bargain data plans, which are delivered sans contract, might have been a carrot in extending AT&T's hold on the iPhone for a few more months, it's not at all clear that an extension would have been necessary to lock in sales through the end of this year.

  • How to cook (and cut) with the iPad

    Filed under:

Honestly, we kind of just wanted to post the video above (in which Jake Gyllenhaal uses Apple's magical and revolutionary device as a cooking board, and then decides to make it the main dish), but it turns out that you can use a kitchen utensil on the iPad to some success. Another British man got a 3G iPad from the States, and really wanted to use his Vodafone SIM on it. So he grabbed a meat cleaver, and got to cutting. He chopped off enough of the SIM card to fit it in the iPad's microSIM slot, and when he plugged it in, it reportedly worked.

That's a little nuts -- we definitely don't recommend that you foreigners a) start chopping up SIMs, and b) try sticking chopped-up SIMs in the iPad's card slot. But The Register claims it should work, since most of the body of a SIM card is just plastic handle rather than the important electronics. And who knows -- if you do break things, and brick your iPad in some way, at least you'll have a very sturdy glass cutting board.

  • Estimates: iWork for iPad is a giant cash cow for Apple

    Filed under:

The folks at Business Insider (BI) are reporting that Apple's iWork apps for iPad -- Pages, Keynote and Numbers -- have likely generated US$3 million in revenue since the iPad was launched in the US. If the trend continues, the apps could bring in $40 million per year.

Where did BI get their numbers? Some broad assumptions, honestly. Discussions with developers who consistently have apps in the top ten suggested that top paid iPad apps will sell about 7,500 copies on a Saturday or Sunday, and about 2,500 on a weekday. At $10/each, that works out to approximately $825,000 per week. Admittedly, it's "a very rough estimate." The iWork apps have been among the top 10 paid apps since the iPad's release in the US.

An estimate, yes, but it does illustrate an important point: users want "serious" work apps for the iPad. Sure, the initial user base was largely fans who already enjoy the iWork apps, but that fact that those apps are still among the top ten suggest that customers other than the fanboys are buying.

Not bad for three productivity apps on a platform that "won't mean business."

  • External HD support hacked on the iPad

    Filed under:

Here's an awesome trick for adding external HDD storage to an iPad. By "awesome" we mean complicated, round-about, wire-friendly and ultimately impractical (are you going to sit at Starbucks with this rig?), but hey...why do people climb Mt. Everest? Because it's there!

After reading our own Erica's post on enjoying Apple's deceptively versatile iPad Camera Connection Kit, Maxwell C. Shay found a way to get his jailbroken iPad to recognize an external drive with it. Maxwell explains the process in great detail here, but basically he used his MacBook to tunnel through via SSH and trick the iPad into mounting the drive connected with the kit and a split-USB cable.

This set up won't win any prizes for looks, but as for ingenuity it gets an A+. Well done.

  • Marking out iPhone app icons on the iPad

    Filed under:

David Frampton has an interesting idea for how to display non-universal iPhone apps on the iPad: put a black border around them, much like how iPhone apps will display if they are not scaled-up.

I think it's a brilliant idea. It makes them distinguishable, but at the same time seems not too obvious.

If you look at iPhone apps on the iPad today, you may be able to tell the difference between the 57x57 pixel icons for iPhone apps versus 72x72 for native/universal iPad apps.

Would Apple ever consider doing something like this? Hard to say. Initially Apple has wanted to make it clear that iPhone apps are available for the iPad, but nearly everyone I've heard who has run iPhone apps scaled up on the iPad says that the experience is definitely sub-par.

When iPhone OS 4 comes to the iPad this fall, perhaps one of the ways that Apple will try to nudge developers towards producing either universal apps or iPad versions will be to scale their icons. I'm reminded of the way that System Preferences in Snow Leopard handles 32-bit Preference Panes: they force the user to re-open System Preferences. It's not a huge issue, but just enough that I can imagine developers wanting to avoid the "ugh" factor.

The biggest reason that I see in favor of doing something like this is that there's very little downside. The icons will look better not being scaled up and it helps the user identify iPhone applications at a glance. Developers would have a slight motivational push to make iPad/universal versions of their apps.

  • iPad descends upon 9 countries on May 28

    Filed under:

Earlier this morning we noted that the iPad will be made available in Australia on May 28th. Fortunately for other international shoppers, Apple's announcement wasn't restricted to Australia. In fact, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK will all have iPads available for sale on the 28th. Pre-orders are being taken as of today, May 10th.

Last month, Apple announced that the iPad's international availability would be pushed back to "late May," citing high initial demand. "Demand is far higher than we predicted," Apple's press release read, "and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad." At that time Apple promised that pre-orders would begin on May 10th, which they have.

Congratulations to Apple's worker bees for getting those things out the door. To our international friends: prepare to get nothing accomplished on the 28th.

  • IM+ lite now available for iPad and iPhone

    Filed under:

IM+ Lite is now available for iPhone and iPad as a free, ad-supported universal application.

Our full review of IM+ for iPad is in the works and should be appearing shortly, so I'll just hit some highlights here: With the exception of Skype chat, IM+ Lite supports the same features as the full version of IM+: Twitter, Facebook, Google Talk, Yahoo, MSN/Live Messenger, AIM/iChat, ICQ, MySpace and Jabber.

IM+ has a speech recognition option (as US$0.99 in-app purchase) and allows you to browse the Internet with a built-in browser so you needn't exit the app to follow links.

IM+ will notify you via push notifications of new email in Hotmail, Yahoo, or GMail accounts, as well as sending push notifications of new IMs on all supported networks.

The ad-free version of IM+ is $9.99, but if you haven't tried it yet, the lite version is a good way to do just that.

Unfortunately IM+ still does not support group chats in AIM (although they do work in MSN, and in Skype if you have the paid version). If you rely on that feature you'll still need to stick with BeeJiveIM.

  • Android OS pulls ahead of Apple in smartphone market

    Filed under:

It's not a stunning surprise, but the Android OS has knocked Apple out of the number 2 slot and slid just behind RIM.

Market Researcher NPD says first quarter sales give RIM (Blackberry) 36% of OS sales. Android has 28% while Apple has 21%.

These percentages are only smartphone numbers and do not include the iPod touch.

NPD says that the Droid, Droid Eris and Blackberry Curve are flying off the shelves, largely because of a 2-for-1 sale at Verizon. At the same time, customers are hesitant to buy iPhones with a new model rumored to be available soon.

The NPD Group compiles and analyzes mobile device sales data based on more than 150,000 completed online consumer research surveys each month. Surveys are based on a nationally-balanced and demographically-representative sample, and results are projected to represent the entire population of US consumers. Note: Sales figures do not include corporate/enterprise mobile phone sales.

This is a good wake-up call for Apple, and things may change when the new iPhone with OS 4.0 ships, most likely in June. Apple shouldn't get too comfortable, as HP may be doing some interesting things with Palm, and later this year the Windows Phone 7 will arrive with a highly-motivated Microsoft behind it.

Ultimately, competition is good for everyone, and iPhone owners can expect to see better phones and features as Apple continues to see it does not have the smartphone market to itself. It might also help Apple in any pending antitrust case.

  • Found footage: Next-gen iPhone middle plate assembly

    Filed under:

Just like the iPhone LCD leak back in March, SmartPhone Medic got their hands on another piece of next-gen iPhone hardware. This time they've posted a video of the middle plate assembly for the upcoming iPhone. SmartPhone Medic notes that the part looks identical to the one in the prototype iPhone Gizmodo bought, and from what I can see it looks like they're right. The visible black seams in the case are still there (yuck), and it appears that the SIM card slot has moved from the top of the case to the side, similar to the layout on the iPad. The metal plate fits perfectly into the iPhone front face and LCD assembly that SmartPhone Medic showed off in March, so it looks like that leaked part was the real thing.

Other than the "guts" of the iPhone (which won't see the light of day again until its official release), the only part SmartPhone Medic has yet to show off is the iPhone's rear casing. There's still no definitive word on what the material of that rear case is -- some have said glass, while others are saying it might be some type of ceramic. We should know the answer to that question very soon: WWDC starts on June 7, and almost everyone expects the next-gen iPhone to have its (official) debut at the keynote.

  • Rogers offering $20 for iPad add-on to existing iPhone customers?

    Filed under:

The Apple Store for Canada is currently showing the above rates for iPad data plans, but before you get too excited, note a few things. First, Rogers' official iPad page does not yet show any rate plan information. Second, BoyGeniusReport updated their article on this to say that "Apple has removed all traces of the $20 plan from its website," but it is still available at the link shown. Rogers PR told BGR that the "the $20 plan was a mistake on Apple's part."

If this is true (and that's a big "if" at this point), iPhone users in the USA are going to look longingly at Rogers again. Rogers earlier announced that tethering was going to continue to be free for many customers. And now it looks like they might offer some sort of a bundle deal for iPhone users?

Hey, AT&T, are you listening? This is how you treat customers when you hope to keep them, not rest on your exclusivity for as long as possible. How about you get your act together and offer tethering at a reasonable price (Not that I would expect Verizon would treat iPhone customers any better.)?

Many people will point to the "5GB per month" limitation of the Rogers plan as a step down from AT&T's unlimited $30/month iPad plan. That's true, but I doubt many people who pay for unlimited will use more than 5GB.

UPDATE: I re-checked at 2:45pm and Apple's page no longer shows the $20, and Rogers' website now shows only the $15 and $35 options. Like AT&T, these plans do not require a contract, and come with free access to Rogers' Wi-Fi "Hot Spots."

  • Apple #4 in e-tailing survey

    Filed under:

This a bit of good news for Apple -- despite the numerous complaints seen day to day against the company, Apple's online store came in fourth in overall customer satisfaction in a recent survey. ForSee Results tracked the shopping experience for 23,400 over the Internet during a two-week period in February. Apple came in behind Netflix, Amazon and Avon.

Read the entire report here (registration required). Given the economy and the uncertainty of buying stuff online to begin with (I vastly prefer handling a product in a brick and mortar store before buying it), it's good to find out which companies are easy to work with online. I've also dealt with both Netflix and Amazon and have had nothing buy excellent service, in addition to the few times I've ordered from Apple online.

  • Seven ways the iPad is a boon for book lovers

    Filed under:

Fellow TUAW blogger Michael Grothaus gave us his take on utilizing the iPad as an ebook reader over the weekend. It's is a good look into some of the down sides of ebook readers like the iPad, Kindle, Sony Reader, et. al. I'm the type of bibliophile that reads a lot of different things at once. I'll be reading a couple of novels, along with several volumes of manga, at a time -- going back and forth as I feel like reading the particular book.

While I do agree that traditional books aren't going anywhere soon, there are some rather big positives the iPad does bring to the literary world.

Easy access to public-domain literature. I am in the process of launching a webcomic that requires a lot of research on literature that's already in the public domain, such as "The Wizard of Oz" with a few swipes. I had the initial book in the series, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," on my iPad and read it over the course of a few hours. Being a Kindle graduate, I found the process fairly easy and quickly loaded up some other titles onto the iPad. Of course, many of these are available for most ereaders thanks to Project Gutenberg.

Presenting old classics in a new form.
I encourage anyone with an iPad to try out the sample of this interactive version of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It is simply superb, and really shows the possibilities of what the iPad can do for reading. Another example is The Elements, one of the initial iPad apps that got raves and with good reason.

  • MacBook Air updates imminent?

    Filed under:

Via "a well-placed source familiar with Apple inventory levels and product refreshes," the Australian version of Macworld has discovered that MacBook Air updates may arrive as early as this week. Their source found a new product number in Apple's database, MC516LL/A K87 BETTER BTR-USA. Macworld notes that the "BETTER" portion of the product code means it's likely to be a new Mac, rather than the 27-inch displays that have also been rumored recently.

The MacBook Air is long overdue for an update to its hardware, having last been refreshed in June of 2009. Aside from a CPU bump (almost certainly sticking with Core 2 Duo), increase to 4 GB for the base RAM, and an increase in hard drive/SSD capacity, I'd expect to see the glass trackpad make its debut on the MacBook Air as well. Currently, the MacBook Air the only Apple notebook that still has a separate button for the trackpad. I also wouldn't be surprised to see the NVIDIA GeForce 320M replace the previous model's NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, assuming Apple found a way to cram the newer GPU onto the MacBook Air's tiny logic board. One more feature that would be nice, but that I'm not holding my breath for, is a price drop -- since the release of the iPad, the MacBook Air seems like even more of a niche product than it was before.

Several thousand of these units are reportedly on their way to Australia, so you can pretty much bet the farm that you'll be seeing a "Store is Down!" post from us sometime early Tuesday morning.

  • Nintendo: Apple is 'enemy of the future'

Only two months ago, the official word from gaming giant Nintendo was that they weren't worried about competition from Apple. But according to Times Online, Nintendo's president, Satoru Iwata, has instructed his subordinates to consider Nintendo victorious over Sony. Instead, Nintendo now considers Apple its "enemy of the future."

Iwata's remarks come as no surprise given the downturn in sales of Nintendo's consoles. Sales of the Wii are down nearly 21 percent year over year, and the company's net profits have seen an almost identical decline. While Nintendo hasn't been selling either the Wii or the DS as technological powerhouses, Times Online correctly notes that both platforms are starting to show their age. It's only a matter of time before the iPhone, iPod, and iPad catch up to or even surpass the capabilities of Nintendo's offerings unless Nintendo introduces new hardware, and soon.

There's more than enough room in the market for both companies to sell their wares, of course. Nintendo has a singular focus as a games maker, while Apple seems to be taking a page from Sony in becoming a more generalized consumer electronics company. Apple's recent focus on gaming on its portables is reportedly something that Steve Jobs himself embraced with reluctance. Not only is it unlikely that Apple's portables will kill off Nintendo, it's unlikely that Apple even wants to do so. Personally, I was worried about Nintendo's prognosis when they were dismissing Apple out of hand; now that the company seems committed to taking Apple seriously as a competitor, Nintendo's future looks a lot rosier to me.

  • TUAW's Daily App: Home 3D

Lest you think that all we'll be spotlighting in this space is games, here's an interesting app meant for anyone thinking about adding a couch to that living room or putting an extra bed in the back bedroom. Home 3D is an "architecture and interior design app" that allows you to model out your home in 3D, including doors and windows on a floor plan, wallpaper, and furniture, allowing you to test out your choices on your device first before tearing out a wall or repainting a room.

Having all of this functionality on your iPhone or iPad is impressive (and the best home design software costs a lot more than this one -- US$3.99 for the iPhone and $4.99 for the iPad), but Home 3D does it with an impressive interface and a surprising number of features. You can use a color picker and choose from a set of pre-loaded furniture, buy more with in-app purchases, or try creating your own models or even using the iPhone's camera for textures.

It's not perfect -- if you want to do serious home design, you'll probably have to go for something a little more dedicated on the desktop. But just for moving some furniture around, or maybe seeing what a room might look like with a different color of paint, Home 3D does the trick.

The Yellow Sticky Note of Doom is back and the Apple Store has once again gone down. What could those evil Apple Geniuses be up to at the main Apple Store site? Are they planning? Scheming? Plotting to Take Over The World?
