- Nokia takes aim at iPad in latest legal skirmish with Apple
Surprising exactly nobody, Nokia put the Apple iPad in its sights in its ongoing battle against Apple for patent infringement. Nokia originally sunk its legal hooks into Apple back in October, 2009, when it sued Apple in the United States District Court in the District of Delaware for violating many of its patents relating to GSM, WiFi, and UMTS.
The suit itself was put on hold back in March pending an International Trade Commission investigation arising out of complaints filed by both parties, in which hearings are scheduled to be held in October and November. But just to keep things interesting, Nokia went ahead and filed a complaint in the United States District Court in the Western District of Wisconsin to add the iPad 3G to its list of infringing Apple products.
Why Wisconsin? Well, Nokia and Apple pretty much have their choice of venue, doing business all over the United States. It's likely that this particular district represents a blend of court rules and precedent that favor Nokia in some way.

Переслать - Found Footage: Playing virtual golf in Manhattan with Gigaputt for iPhone
Filed under: iPhone
Considering the number of iPhones around the world, I have this sinking feeling that we're going to start seeing a lot of people wandering looking like fools. Well, they already look like fools, but when people start swinging imaginary golf clubs in public they're going to look even more foolish.
Gigaputt for iPhone (US$1.99), from Gigantic Mechanic, is an augmented reality app that lets you play golf anywhere. You grab your iPhone, fire up Gigaputt, and it lays down a virtual 3-hole golf course wherever you may be. That could be in the middle of Manhattan, in a suburban shopping mall, in the swamps of Louisiana, or on a mountainside in Colorado.
Gigaputt includes support for OpenFeint as well as Twitter and Facebook integration. For two bucks, it looks like a great way to get some exercise and lose all your dignity. Now, where did I put my plaid golf pants?TUAWFound Footage: Playing virtual golf in Manhattan with Gigaputt for iPhone originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 07 May 2010 17:45:00 EST. Переслать - TUAW's tips for gifting an iPad for Mother's Day
Still searching for that perfect Mother's Day gift for your mom or wife? Why not get her an iPad?
Buy Mom a computer? You're kidding me, right? The iPad's versatility lends itself to some computer-like comparisons. And a natural response to this would be: "Who would want a computer for a Mother's Day gift? That's tacky." This would be similar to Al Bundy buying Peggy a bowling ball, only because he wanted it for himself.
Except that it isn't just a computer. As a consumption device, the iPad can also be seen as an appliance. No matter where you put it, it doesn't seem too out of place, and blends in with its surroundings well. This versatility, coupled with its ease-of-use, could make it an ideal gift for mom.
Now getting an iPad alone would be tacky. There's little thought behind it. Why not go the extra mile and customize an iPad for her? This will take some legwork, however. But who cares. This is for Mom, right?

Переслать - iPad Wishlist: Separate user accounts
Filed under: iPad
We have a huge iPad problem in my household, and it looks like we are not alone. The problem is, we only have one. Just one iPad and a handful of rapacious gadget-loving geeks. While the iPad offers the same physical hardware for each user, we would all benefit from some system of user accounts, allowing us to segregate our own personal files from each other, just like we do on our desktop systems.
As our own Victor Agreda put it, "Separate user accounts was probably the first thing I thought of when I brought the iPad home." He, like other users, was hoping to make accounts to limit access to e-mail identities, certain applications, and private files.
Read on for more on why this would be a great idea... and why we may not see it anytime soon.

Переслать - Orange UK announces iPad Wi-Fi + 3G data plan pricing for UK
Filed under: iPad
They may have a hung parliament in the UK, but at least they know what to do about iPad data plan pricing.
Fast on the heels of Apple's announcement of iPad availability in a number of international locales, we've heard from Orange UK about what they'll be charging iPad Wi-Fi + 3G owners for data plans in the UK.
First and foremost is a "pay for what you use" data plan charging 5p per MB of usage each month up to £40 per month (about US$60 at current rates, a little bit more than the $29.95 "unlimited" plan available in the States). The small print says that this plan is subject to fair usage, meaning that you're limited to 750 MB of usage on that plan -- in other words, you'll never get to that £40 maximum.
If you crave additional data, Orange has four optional bundles, all with an maximum allowed data consumption. The best plan appears to be the iPad Monthly 25, providing 10 GB of 3G data consumption plus unlimited browsing at BT Openzone Wi-Fi hotspots for £25 per month. A copy of the Orange UK pricing chart follows this post; click the Read More link below to view it.

Переслать - First look: New IUGO iPad games
Filed under: iPad
The video you see here was in my inbox this morning and I really liked what what I saw. IUGO, a long time player in the mobile entertainment arena, is in the process of releasing four new games for the iPad platform.
What made these games stand out for me was how well they leveraged the iPad hardware realities for both cooperative and competitive game play. Several of these games highlight multi-handed multi-player interaction on the same device. That's a feature that's specific to the iPad. The iPhone's size doesn't allow that kind of two player interaction, except through online game play with virtual opponents. What IUGO's games are doing is expanding play from an iPhone-style one user at a time paradigm into a two-users-at-once iPad experience.

Переслать - International iBookstores opening on May 28th in most countries
Filed under: iPad
When iPads fall into the eager hands of Apple fans in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK on May 28th, the iBookstore and Apple's free iBooks e-reader app may be there.
Apple has confirmed that iBooks and the iBookstore will be available in all of the listed countries with the exception of Germany and Switzerland, and we'll be sure to update this post as soon as we've received word that those two countries have been added to the list (we're starting a rumor here that Apple has to stock up on digital umlauts and eszetts before opening these iBookstores).
For those of you who will be getting your hands on an iPad soon and want to take advantage of the many books that are already available in the iBooks epub format, be sure to read Erica Sadun's post about filling up your iBookShelf. The post, and the comments that accompany it, offer some suggestions for fun and entertaining books. And remember, you can always use Stanza or Calibre to convert other document formats for reading in iBooks.

Переслать - WWDC 2010 sells out in only 8 days
Filed under: WWDC
If you want to go to WWDC 2010 and haven't signed up yet, it's already too late.
All passes for Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, which runs June 7 - 11 at San Francisco's Moscone Center, were sold as of yesterday. The annual conference caters to Mac OS X and iPhone OS developers. Apple has been less than subtle about demonstrating that the mobile OS has become the favored child in the family, though.
It is expected that iPhone OS 4 will headline the event, with tracks on multitasking of iPhone and iPad apps, working with the iAd in-app advertising solution, and taking advantage of the 100+ new features in the mobile operating system. Sessions on coding for Mac OS X, HTML5 local storage, and network applications are also expected to be popular among developers. As in past years, many Apple watchers expect that the next generation iPhone will be introduced at the show.
By announcing the dates for WWDC 2010 a little more than a month before the show, Apple had already received criticism from developers who complained that they would not have time to make flight and hotel reservations. What's up for next year? "Hi ... we're having WWDC next week. Can you come?"

Переслать - An iPhone and iPod case that includes speakers
Filed under: Accessories
We all know that the iPhone and iPod touch have pretty skimpy speakers. iPods have no speakers, so we're dependent on headphones or speakers to get any tunes out of them.
Portable Sound Laboratories has an interesting solution that will protect your electronics and give you good sound at the same time. It's called the iMainGo2, and it's a 9 oz., clamshell zippered case that will hold an iPhone or an iPod touch. There's a headphone compatible 3.5mm plug that connects the case to your device. The unit runs on 4 AAA batteries for about 30 hours. We have one on loan for review, and I've been testing it around the house for a few days.
How does it sound? Better than I expected. It had nice bright highs, which were especially audible on percussion like snare drums and triangles. The bass is good, but this is not a device to equal a much bigger speaker system with a subwoofer. Still, it's more than reasonable. The unit appears to use a bass reflex or ducted port design, and if you close your eyes and just listen, you would think you were listening to a bigger system.TUAWAn iPhone and iPod case that includes speakers originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 07 May 2010 12:00:00 EST. Filed under: Bugs/Recalls
iTunes 9.1 brought a feature to all iPods that had previously only existed for the Shuffle: the ability to sync lower bitrate, 128 kbps AAC versions of songs. With only a modest reduction in sound quality, enabling this feature saved nearly 2 GB of space on my 16 GB iPhone 3G. After enabling it, the feature works by re-encoding songs on the fly to the lower bitrate the first time you sync your iPod. This will likely be followed by a very lengthy first sync as hundreds or even thousands of songs are downsampled to 128 kbps AAC, but all subsequent syncs are supposed to skip this step altogether unless you make major changes to your music library.
Since iTunes 9.1.1, however, I've noticed that there's been an extremely lengthy sync operation every single time I've synced my iPhone, with hundreds of songs that were already on my iPhone being re-encoded again for no apparent reason. Fortunately I haven't been the only one with this bug, and the folks at Mac OS X Hints found a solution to iTunes 9.1.1's syncing bug.

iPhone - IPod - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - iTunesПереслать - Higher Ed choosing sides on iPad use
Filed under: Education
Timothy M. Chester, the CIO of Pepperdine University, discussed the ongoing controversy of how higher education has and should deal with the encroachment of the iPad on campuses throughout the country. Using information gleaned from the Educause CIO listserv, he found two camps being formed, and a bit of misinformation.
The first camp's motto seems to take the position that if there is a new, potentially useful technology, it should be welcomed immediately. Seton Hill University announced that it will give an iPad to every full-time student in this fall, while George Fox University, a school that has been giving out computers to all incoming students for twenty years, is giving students a choice of either being handed an iPad or a Macbook.
Their position is that they aren't willing to say which is the better choice, and many students already come to school with a laptop. To a large extent this is a marketing gimmick. When was the last time you heard of Seton Hill or George Fox University? But on the other hand, I know from experience that IT departments function more cheaply, and most often more effectively if their mission is to not support every digital device in the known universe. Tech support staff that only need to support a small number of platforms need less training, and parts inventories can be drastically reduced. However, Chester writes that putting an iPad into every student's hands would cost Pepperdine around US$800,000 which he posited would be much better spent on hiring new faculty.TUAWHigher Ed choosing sides on iPad use originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 07 May 2010 10:00:00 EST. Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - Hong Kong - Apple - AustraliaПереслать - E3, GDC Austin to have mobile game tracks
The Electronics Entertainment Expo, known as E3, has joined the list of game conferences to set up tracks and areas specifically for mobile gaming, a market currently driven by Apple's mobile devices. The high profile June conference, in which gaming companies and developers all show off what they're releasing for the rest of the year, will have a special area set up specifically for mobile games. The Mobile Games Pavilion will give mobile developers (even relatively small developers -- the entry fee is only around $3000) a chance to flaunt their wares in a place specifically for them. In the past, E3 has played host to a few iPhone games, but this will be the first time that they'll have an area set off from the rest of the usually busy show.
E3 isn't the only place, either. Earlier this year, GDC in San Francisco had an iPhone gaming track, and this fall's Game Developers Conference in Austin actually has two different tracks set up for Apple devices: an iPhone and an iPad lineup of panels and discussion topics. Apple has moved into the gaming market in a big way with its App Store and its mobile devices, and the gaming industry's biggest conferences are making room for the developers that are working on them. It'll be very interesting to see what news comes out of these events, and what kind of course these tracks take in the future.TUAWE3, GDC Austin to have mobile game tracks originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 07 May 2010 09:00:00 EST. iPhone - AppStore - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPadПереслать - TUAW's Daily App: Solidarity Solitaire
Solidarity Solitaire is a pretty good version of Solitaire on the App Store, and developer Kyle Davis just recently released a free version supported by in-game ads. Just like the paid version, the free version is a no-frills affair. Solitaire is Solitaire, though, so if all you want to do is play a little solo card game, it'll do ya. The two quibbles I had with the app were that the free version doesn't offer a landscape orientation, so if you want that, you'll have to pay the 99 cents. Also, there's no auto-clearing of the board, even when you have opened up all of the cards. Then again, half of the point of Solitaire is just moving cards around, so maybe that's part of the game.
If you play a ton of Solitaire and want a full-fledged experience, you'd probably be better served by shelling out for something like Solitaire City. It's much pricier, but with multiple modes, better graphics, and even leaderboards (wait -- leaderboards on a solo game? Solidarity offers that as well, thanks to OpenFeint integration), it might be worth the investment if you play cards on your iPhone a lot. If you just want a quick hit of pushing cards around, Solidarity (especially the free version) is worth a download.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Solidarity Solitaire originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 07 May 2010 08:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPad
When I wrote last month about the pleasures and perils of sharing an iPad with your spouse, I didn't really grapple with the meta-challenge of a houseful of technophiles, all clamoring for their turn at bat. While there's already some contention between the adults and the two under-10s in the house, we grown-up folk have enough veto power to dictate who gets a chance with the iPad, and when. Between that authority, and the option of having the kids use an iPhone or iPod touch for fun and games, we're OK so far.
Some families are ahead of the curve, though. In a post charmingly titled What iPads Did To My Family, EMC marketing exec Chuck Hollis explains how one week with the iPad at home, shared among his wife and three high-school & college-aged offspring, has completely upended the device pyramid.
Chuck's house is pretty tech heavy, with a dozen computers and a slew of supporting gear spread out all over the place. He says that when he first brought the iPad home, the initial reaction was not positive -- "Oh no, Dad bought another toy" -- but that within hours, his wife had taken to the iPad for photo uploads. Within a day or two, all three kids were hooked.
Evening arguments over "who forgot to charge the iPad?" and "if you're going to eat pizza and use the iPad, at least wipe it!" became frequent. Spiking demand for the iPad was paired with a remarkable decline in need for other tech: "All the PCs and laptops are basically not being used. All the Macs are not being used. All have been powered off.... Everyone in the family is waiting for their turn at the iPad."
Eyes open and looking to the future, Chuck doesn't anticipate any more desktop computer purchases, and maybe not even any more laptop purchases. That may be a bit of hyperbole, but he's sold: "Sure, there's a handful of tasks that I still would prefer a real computer, but -- amazingly -- that list has now shrunk dramatically. In less than a week."
Instead, he's probably going to have to invest in more iPads.
How has the iPad changed your tech habits at home, and your purchase plans?

We've seen an iPad blended and microwaved, so why not turn it into a skateboard, right? That's exactly what Fuel.tv did, and you can watch the results above. Does it stand up to the skater scrutiny? Yes and no ... okay, mostly no. The screen surprisingly breaks right away, and the form factor seems a little too small to support the skater's balance.
However, after a little reinforcement (including a drilled hole through the middle that results in ... smoke? Is that the "magical" part?), they can actually get it to roll a little ways. That's not too shabby! Before you start complaining that they've, yet again, wasted an iPad, don't forget that 500 bucks has nabbed them over 100k views of their video online. So, for them, it's not a complete throwaway.

Call me fickle.
Back on April 19th, I was pretty happy with Penultimate, a digital notepad for iPad. I mentioned in my review that I'd like to be able to type into the notebooks instead of just writing handwritten notes, but I was happy with the ability to have different notebooks. All in all, Penultimate seemed to be a pretty good notetaking app.
That was before I found PaperDesk for iPad from WebSpinner, LLC in the App Store. The app comes in a free Lite version or a $1.99 full edition, the only difference between the two being that in the Lite version, each of your notebooks is limited to a maximum of 3 pages. I started by downloading and installing the Lite version, and quickly found myself spending the two bucks to upgrade to the full edition.
PaperDesk can be a bit surprising the first time you launch it. Instead of seeing a notebook or a sheet of paper, there's a blank wooden desk. Fortunately, there's a fairly obvious "new document" icon (the ubiquitous plus sign) in the upper right corner of the desk, and a tap on that brings up a dialog for creating a new notebook. Read on for additional details and screenshots of PaperDesk in action.

Переслать - Review: Gorgeous Small World app shows board games can be great on the iPad
Filed under: Gaming, App Review
Considering how good Small World (US$4.99) - the first big Euro board game of the iPad era - is, fans of these sorts of games are in for a really wonderful ride. While this app isn't perfect, we're here to tell you that it's well worth your time.
Maybe you've seen Apple pushing this game in the App Store, with the motley crew pictured above staring out at you from the flash screen. Without a familiarity with the physical board game, though, it's kind of hard to know what to make of it. Here's what's going on: Underneath the pretty fantasy graphics, Small World is a clever area control game, an almost completely luck-free strategy game that gives players a lot of great in-game choices. Each turn, you have a small number of tokens representing one of about a dozen tribes (trolls, halflings, tritons, etc.) that all have a random bonus power (one of twenty) attached. You send these little minions out to take over some territory and score points based on where you are at the end of your turn. Spread yourself too thin and you won't have much to do next turn. Stay too bunched up and you won't score enough points to win. In short, the game is brilliant if you're looking for something a little more strategic than Risk and don't need a twitchy tapping experience to have fun. Read on to find out all just how big Small World can be.
