- TUAW Talkcast tonight: Moms, Macs, and mirth at 10 PM EDT
Filed under: Podcasts
Sunday night is the night that all of your favorite TUAW bloggers and commenters get together for the fun-filled hour called the TUAW Talkcast. Tonight's show starts at 10 PM EDT sharp, and we'll be talking about our mothers (hey, it is Mother's Day and we need to work that into this show somehow...) and as many Apple-related topics as we can possibly come up with.
To participate on TalkShoe, you can use the browser-only client, the embedded Facebook app, or the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the "TalkShoe Web" button on our profile page at 10 pm Sunday. To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (take advantage of your free cellphone weekend minutes if you like): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8.
If you've got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac, you can connect via the free Gizmo or X-Lite SIP clients; basic instructions are here. Talk with you then!
Note: For those who want to listen to the show on iPads or iPhones without calling in, you can try this MP3 streaming link once the show begins -- we're not 100% sure it will work, but do let us know.TUAWTUAW Talkcast tonight: Moms, Macs, and mirth at 10 PM EDT originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 09 May 2010 18:00:00 EST. Переслать - Case Study: Standing at your Mac to save your back
Filed under: Rig of the Week
BusinessWeek is worried that Your Office Chair Is Killing You. "Short of sitting on a spike, you can't do much worse than a standard office chair," says Galen Cranz, a professor at the University of California at Berkeley.
This article caught my eye because just about a month ago, I bought this standing desk from Amazon.com. I had been in the market for one for a long time but had held off because they are usually ridiculously expensive. At the time, that desk cost me $96 ($86 + $10 shipping, all prices USD); it may have been a pricing error because that same desk today is selling for $277 + $7.50 shipping or you can buy a pack of two for $723 + $73 shipping. Reading up on others around the web using various different desks it is not unusual to see people spending over $1000 for a "standing desk" especially custom made. You can spend much, much more.
I'm not trying to sell you on this particular desk, but to answer the question that everyone seems to ask me when they see it: "How well does it work? Aren't you tired of standing all of the time?"Read on for more...

Unofficial Apple Weblog - Macintosh - University of California Berkeley - Amazon.com - AppleПереслать - The Australian Store is back up -- and iPads are ready for pre-order
Filed under: iPad
Although we're tempted to write a cute folksy post full of "G'day", "Mate", and "Wombat", we will refrain from the obvious. After all, we have too big a debt of gratitude to Australia (from the Wiggles to John Noble to Violet Crumble) to go that route. So, keeping it simple, here's a simple update that the Australian online Apple Store has gone offline, most likely in preparation for iPad preorders.
So keep your eyes open and let us know what you see when the store comes back.
One more thing: Aussie Aussie iPad! Oi oi oi![1]
[1]We couldn't help ourselves there. Sorry. We just love Australia! (Update: Yes, the link is correct. Read the post in re the Australian connection.)
Update: The store is back up. The iPad pre-order page still says: "Coming late May, Pre-order on 10 May."
Update: Australians can now pre-order iPads, starting at A$629, approximately $560 in US currency. The highest end 64 GB 3G model retails for $1049 ($932)
To obtain 3G service, Australians are told to purchase a 3G iPad, and then contact a carrier that offers iPad data plans to obtain a microSIM card.

Australia - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - Apple - OceaniaПереслать - A tale of two media: Despite the iPad, traditional books aren't going anywhere.
It was the newest of technologies, it was the oldest of technologies. A while back I wrote an opinion piece on my lament over Penguin Books' John Makinson trying to reinvent books on the iPad. In response to the article, I received emails that ranged from people calling me a Luddite to readers asking me to petition Penguin to keep books from becoming audio, video, and streaming monstrosities. What people on both sides of the debate misunderstood was that I am not against ebooks. I'm against turning an ebook into a multimedia experience that detracts from the work of literature.
A few days ago I was in London having drinks with a novelist and a literary agent. We discussed the pros and cons of the iPad as a book reader and how the iPad as a medium and its iBookstore affects the reading public. The novelist and agent gave me their impressions of the device and how it will, if at all, change the way readers consume books. We also spoke about Penguin's ideas to reinvent books as apps and discussed my previous article on the subject along with the notion that some people in the tech world think that the iPad and iBookstore will kill traditional books.
Our conversation got me thinking: I normally read about 50-60 books a year in paperback format, but I had owned my iPad for a week already and had yet to try my favorite pastime on it. So I decided to compare how reading the same book in paperback would compare with reading it on the iPad. In order not to bias the medium I was reading it on by already having discovered the story on another device (and thus being a little bored with it on a second reading that so closely followed the first), I decided to read one novel -- every other of its chapters on the iPad and then in paperback.TUAWA tale of two media: Despite the iPad, traditional books aren't going anywhere. originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 08 May 2010 15:00:00 EST.
