iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPad - Avatron SoftwareПереслать - Talkcast tonight at 10 PM EDT: legal matters, iPhone devs, and more
Filed under: TUAW Business
Do we have a lot to talk about tonight on the TUAW Talkcast? Heck, yes!
We have the aftermath of the Gizmodo 4th-generation iPhone fiasco, and a discussion of the possible legal ramifications of that situations. We'll talk about that poor Apple engineer who lost the phone to begin with, and how he may benefit from that faux pas.
Several of the TUAW staff are at the Voices That Matter iPhone conference in Seattle this weekend, and we may be talking with them about what's going on in the world of iPhone OS development.
To participate on TalkShoe, you can use the browser-only client, the embedded Facebook app, or the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the "TalkShoe Web" button on our profile page at 10 pm Sunday. To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (take advantage of your free cellphone weekend minutes if you like): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8.
If you've got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac, you can connect via the free Gizmo or X-Lite SIP clients; basic instructions are here. Talk with you then!

Let's face it: paying bills is not fun. There's the $75-plus monthly AT&T bill (assuming $40 voice + $30 data + $5 text messages) for your iPhone, the $25-plus broadband bill that your iPhone, iPad, and Mac use, as well as a host of other recurring bills that make life that much more fun and, well, livable: gas, electricity, water, car payments, etc. While paying your bills and watching your bank account decrease at the same time may not necessarily be fun, LittleFin Software's Chronicle makes it a bit more enjoyable.

Aaron Hillegass and Joe Conway of Big Nerd Ranch kicked off the Voices that Matter iPhone conference in Seattle this weekend with an overview keynote detailing the lifecycle of an iPhone app from a developer's point of view. The two are trainers and consultants for developers working on iPhone apps, and they laid out how an iPhone app is made, from start to finish, giving tips and suggestions to the developers in attendance on how they've developed their own process.
Read on to learn the steps they take at Big Nerd Ranch in making an iPhone app, and both how and how not to perform them.TUAWVoices that Matter iPhone: Aaron Hillegass, Joe Conway - Lifecycle of an iPhone app originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 25 Apr 2010 13:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPad
On April 8th, just six days after the iPad went on sale, we ran a post writing that Chitika Labs (who had been tracking iPad sales by counting cookies of new iPads hitting the Internet) claimed that Apple had sold 564,257 units. The method used is admittedly not the best of all possible metrics, but it does provide an indication of how many new iPads were leaving the shelves. Today, 15 days later, Chitika reported that over 1,000,000 iPads have been sold. They also claim that over 32,000 new iPads were seen on the Internet today, representing 4% of all total iPad sales.
Thanks to TUAW reader "xamevou" for sending this in.TUAWChitika labs estimates that over one million iPads have been sold originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 25 Apr 2010 12:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - Apple - IPhone - MacintoshПереслать - This Apple really is for the teacher (and students)
iPads for high school students? Yes, thanks. The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that Monte Vista Christian School has 60 iPads ready to serve advanced placement students with e-books instead of the clunky old paper variety. The pilot project may expand to more students if all goes well.
Teachers love the ability to get definitions of words with a click, and the access to video and newspapers. In some classes, students are using the iPads for anatomy demonstrations.
The paper says English teacher Marcus Schwager is excited to show students how to look up obscure words in Shakespeare and get the proper pronunciations.
While the school is among the first to explore the iPad as an educational resource, it surely won't be the last. To smooth the way, Apple has provided a US$50 discount on the iPads, and it has a program to train teachers in how to use them.

IPhone - AppStore - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - AppleПереслать - iBan lifted in Israel, personal imports of iPads now permitted
Filed under: iPad
That didn't take long. After complaints from would-be iPad users, and subsequent Wi-Fi testing, Israel's Ministry of Communications has now declared the iPad to be safe and sane for use there. Last week's ban, which resulted in some iPads cooling their oleophobic heels in customs storage, never made a lot of sense to begin with -- the iPad was already a well-behaved device under EU wireless rules, which are conformant with Israeli standards.
Ynet News reports that travelers may now bring one iPad per person into the country, and any confiscated devices will be returned to their owners. Official sales of the iPad in Israel have yet to be announced by iDigital, the country's only Apple distributor.
Thanks Jehuda!

Israel - Apple - IPad - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Wi-FiПереслать - Craigsphone 2.0 brings maps, images, and more
Filed under: iPhone
Next Mobile Web sent us a heads up that they're set to release version 2.0 of Craigsphone, an app for the iPhone that allows you to browse popular online classifieds site Craigslist quickly and easily. We talked about the app when it first came out, but apparently version 2.0 brings a whole rewrite and a few new features as well. As you can see in the video above, you can now chart a map of your search results (only in the housing categories), see an image preview while browsing, and make more use of Craigslist's account features, including browsing their forums and the official blog. Craigsphone was already the best way to browse Craigslist on the iPhone, and these updates definitely cement that status.
I am a little bummed to see that one of the coolest features of the app, called "Nearby Events," is still only available in San Francisco and Manhattan. That pulls up a map of things going on near you, obviously, and considering that you can map real estate from anywhere, it'd be nice to see that finally spread to more markets. But that's above and beyond Craigslist's own functionality, so if you just want a great way to check out the site on your iPhone, Craigsphone will do it for you for free. We're told the new app should be on the store today, and the iPad version is was released right after launch.TUAWCraigsphone 2.0 brings maps, images, and more originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 25 Apr 2010 07:00:00 EST.
