- TUAW Review: Write and organize handwritten notes on your iPad with Penultimate
Filed under: iPad
To look at my office, you wouldn't know right away that I'm a digital kind of guy. Rather than pull up a text editor on any one of the digital devices that surround me, I'd rather grab a pen and scrawl a note on a Post-it[TM] note. Eventually, the notes are either trashed or fall under some piece of equipment, so they're definitely not for long-term use. Over the years, I've also accumulated a pile of loose-leaf binders, Moleskines, and other notebooks containing the detritus from my brain.
Now that I am iPad-equipped, I finally want to move my note-taking over to the digital age. I've looked at a number of iPad apps, and most of them didn't fit my main requirement of being able to make multiple notebooks for different tasks. When I saw Penultimate from Cocoa Box Design (US$2.99 for early adopters), i finally pulled the trigger on buying a notebook app for the iPad.
While it's not perfect (I'll explain why in my review), Penultimate is the closest to what I'm looking for in an iPad note-taking app. Read the rest of this short review and check out the gallery to see what Penultimate is all about.

Sandwich Lab sent along word of their app WebSaver, which allows you to create a custom screensaver out of any web content you want. Once you install the screensaver, you can then go into the options and add URLs (like your Twitter feed, a Facebook page, or anything really -- you can make the front page of TUAW pop up as your screensaver), and then choose durations for each of them to show, from just a few seconds up to much longer. And you can control the brightness of the webpages, as well as disable Javascript or Flash as you want. You can even add web-based content like Vimeo videos or a webcam feed. It's surprisingly powerful and very easy to use.
It's free for a limited time, too -- they've got a Twitter promotion going on, so if you RT their message, you can pick up a free copy to try. There's also a trial version to check out as well that limits you to just four different sources, but in the full version you can cycle through to as many as you want, and even calibrate the view so you can get it just right. If you're looking for a screensaver that's a little more functional for your Mac, WebSaver may be it.TUAWWebSaver turns web content into a screensaver, free promotion right now originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 19 Apr 2010 18:00:00 EST. Filed under: App Store
Did Eyjafjallajökull mess your week up? The answer is probably "no" if you're asking who Eyjafjallajökull is. For those of us who did have our week interrupted by that big exploding volcano in Iceland, Lonely Planet is offering thirteen of its City Guides for free in the App Store (and okay, they're free to all, no proof of volcano-interruption required).
The aptly-named "Volcano Relief Sale" is being held in hopes of helping travelers stuck in unfamiliar places find "access to practical information as well as suggestions on what to do whilst stranded," according to Tom Hall, Lonely Planet Travel Editor. "That's why we're giving away iPhone city guides to major affected destinations."
Those destinations include: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Budapest, Copenhagen, Istanbul, London, Moscow, Munich, Paris, Rome, Stockholm, and Vienna.
I've been to all but two of those destinations, and if you're stuck in any of them, you really should be thanking Eyjafjallajökull (and now, Lonely Planet). The thirteen City Guides are normally priced between $10 and $15, so this is quite a bargain. But act fast, the City Guides will only be available for free until April 22 -- hopefully a date which will also see many more planes back in the air.

AppStore - IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - LonelyPlanetПереслать - Piper Jaffray estimates a big boost in Mac sales
Filed under: Apple Financial
In a report issued today (cited by Apple 2.0 and SAI), Piper Jaffray's leading light on all things AAPL gazed into his crystal ball and served up some notes on NPD retail sales data. Gene Munster's numbers are especially interesting as we head into tomorrow's earnings report.
The lowdown: Munster is looking for a Mac sales number between 2.8 and 2.9 million machines, based off of NPD's retail data showing a 25% year over year boost in Mac sales for the quarter. He's also looking for iPod sales between 9 and 10 million, and 7.5 million iPhone sales. What's weird is that NPD data showed Mac sales up 39% for January and February... perhaps there was a March slowdown as anticipation built for new laptop models.
Considering that Q2 2009 was a record quarter for both revenue and earnings for Apple -- 2.22 million Macs sold, 11 million iPods and 3.79 million iPhones -- it will be interesting to see where this year's numbers end up, with a rebounding economy and more outlets for the iPhone 3GS. This is the second quarter of Apple's new revenue recognition scheme for iPhone and Apple TV, meaning every single sale of an iPhone hits the bottom line in full force (not to mention the 1/8th share of iPhone sale prices from previous quarters).
Apple 2.0 has its quarterly rundown of analyst predictions at the ready, with a consensus earnings number close to 12 billion. I'll get out my dartboard and make my predictions here: Revenues of $12.79B, 3.25 million Macs sold, 7.75m iPhones sold.

Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - United States - Canada - Washington DCПереслать - iPhone OS 4 to integrate with Facebook
Filed under: iPhone
Developers have done a little more poking around with iPhone OS 4.0, and it looks like Apple is set to get much more social with the next version of the iPhone. Not only will the new OS include the new gaming network Game Center, but apparently the OS will also integrate Facebook contacts directly into apps on the phone. An options file in the system details Apple trying to include Facebook as one of the choices in the "Add Account" window (where you'd currently hook up your Gmail or Yahoo! account), and apparently Facebook contacts would then be connected into the Contacts list, with things like Events or Photos automatically synced to their own locations on the iPhone.
And lest you worry (like I would) that your Contacts would suddenly be inundated with friends-of-friends or random acquaintances, it looks like Apple is ahead of you -- one of the options hints that Facebook contacts would be marked as a separate "type" of contact on the phone -- "Friends," or something like that, as opposed to business or family contacts.
AppleInsider also has news of a unified contact view as well, so presumably even if the same person is listed in two different types of contacts, you could connect them up. And AI also reiterates what we've heard about iChat being on the phone, so it's possible that you could even Facebook chat from directly within a forthcoming mobile iChat app. Looks like Apple is realizing more and more the power of social connections.

iPhone - Apple - Facebook - Unofficial Apple Weblog - EngadgetПереслать - Apple has countersued Kodak
Filed under: Apple Financial
Apple filed suit against Kodak on April 15th, 2010, claiming that it has infringed on two of Apple's granted patents. This comes after Kodak filed suits against both Apple and RiM in January.
The suit targets Kodak's C, M and Z series EasyShare cameras as well as the popular Zi8. Apple claims that Kodak is guilty of copying technology relating to image processing, energy management and memory design. Additionally, Apple has listed a formal ITC complaint that would prevent sales of all affected cameras if the claim is validated.
This is a response to claims Kodak made in against Apple and RIM in January. Specifically, Kodak claims that Apple and RIM infringed upon Kodak's method of previewing images with the iPhone and Blackberry. An additional complaint, pointed at Apple only, addresses processing images at different resolutions. Finally, Apple is also accused of infringements on processes of software programs calling to each other.
This counter-suit strategy is common and usually an effort to produce a settlement and avoid a long and costly court battle.

With the total market value of AAPL at about US$220 billion, over the past year Apple has managed to de-throne Google as Silicon Valley's most valuable company. By comparison, the search and cellphone-centric Big G has a market capitalization of about $174B as of today's prices.
In a retrospective piece, the Silicon Valley Mercury News points out that Apple's market cap is up 107 percent from one year ago. There are only two companies in the United States with a market capitalization greater than Apple's: Exxon Mobil and Microsoft.
Earlier this month, Apple's market cap passed that of Wal-Mart; the margin was $2.84 billion as of April 2nd, 2010 and is about $18B today.
Needham & Co. analyst Charles Wolf notes Apple's success at riding out the USA's economic recession. "It's just mind-boggling. Thanks to the iPhone, it just sailed through the recession. It was just an incredible engine." For the latest on Apple's financial health, follow our live blog of its 2nd quarter analysts call, tomorrow at 2 pm PDT/5 pm EDT.

At one point in my life I was a project manager for a large IT-related company that has three letters in its name. It was the most stressful time in my working life, made even worse by the godawful project management software that we used to create and track our project schedules and costs.
If I had known that App4Mac was going to be coming out with a project management app for the iPad, maybe I'd still be a PM. TUAW received some screenshots this morning of App4Mac's upcoming Projector for iPad, which is an iPad version of their existing Mac application Projector 2.0.9.
No price has been set yet for the iPad app, nor do we have a delivery date from the developers. However, for PMs who use Apple products and would like to have an easy way to keep their project information at their fingertips, Projector for iPad is something to keep in mind.

Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - Apple - Project Management - MacintoshПереслать - Apple launches Headphones with Remote Replacement Program
Filed under: iPod Family
Apple has launched a replacement program for third-generation iPod shuffle headphones with remote controls that exhibit performance problems. The symptoms of the issues, which have led to some lengthy discussions in Apple's Support Forum, include controls that are non-responsive or work intermittently, unexpected volume increase or decrease, and unexpected playing of voice feedback.
The serial number ranges of the iPod shuffle with the affected headphones are xx909xxxxxx to xx952xxxxxx and xx001xxxxxx to xx004xxxxxx. A very small percentage of iPod shuffle owners have experienced the problems, according to Apple. The issue is apparently limited to headphones that were included with the 3rd gen iPod shuffle made between approximately February 2009 and February 2010. Apple also notes that any Apple earphones with built-in remote, like the ones that ship with the iPhone, are covered under this replacement program as well.
Full details on the replacement program, including how to locate your serial number and the steps to go through to obtain your new headphones, are on the Apple Headphones with Remote Replacement Program page.

How about that. Here's your Monday morning follow-up to Engadget's iPhone 4G reveal on Saturday: Gizmodo has what appears to be the actual next-generation, lost and found iPhone.
Some highlights include a front-facing camera, a flash around the rear-facing camera and that squared-off case. Instead of the rounded back that's a part of current iPhones and iPod touches, this unit is flat on the front and back.
There are two volume buttons, a MicroSIM card for carrier access (not MicroSD for storage -- a common mixup), and is 3 grams heavier than the 3GS at 140 grams. It measures 4.50 by 2.31 by 0.37 inches. The screen is supposedly much higher resolution than the current gen of phones.
Check out the post for more. It looks like Engadget was right all along and the cat is out of the bag. If you liked the iPhone Personal Movie Theater, you're gonna love the Personal Shoebox Apple Store. One of the iPhones powers the screen behind the Genius Bar, while the other lights up the Apple logo outside the store.
You can buy the iPhone Personal Movie Theater and Drive In kits from http://www.personalmovietheater.com/, but I'm really hoping that a Personal Shoebox Apple Store kit is forthcoming so that my lack of craft skills will be no impediment to having an Apple Store in my house.

Note: We started up our new feature last week, titling it "App Of The Day" without recalling that our friend Jordan had already used that name for his site. So, we're renaming our "one great app, every day" feature. If you have a suggestion, share it in the comments below, and if we pick yours, we'll send you a t-shirt.
Sword & Poker came out earlier this year, but if you missed it the first time, check it out now. It offers up an intriguing mix of game genres -- it's an RPG at heart, with your hero running through dungeons on a map and upgrading equipment, but the battle sequences are a mix of puzzle and poker gameplay. You lay down cards on a matrix trying to get the best poker hand you can, and then matching certain poker hands does damage to your enemy (or to you, if your enemy is able to assemble a three of a kind or even a royal flush).
It's an intriguing mix of gameplay that's balanced very well -- battles have a very steady pace and even though a few different game genres are being juggled here, they all stay in the air together. The music is impressive, too, from the marching battle sequence to the RPG-style fanfare and excellent sound effects. Apparently the game also has a pass-and-play versus mode, but I never tried it -- there's more than enough depth in the singleplayer RPG. A free version is available to try out, and the full version is $3.99.TUAWTUAW's Daily App: Sword and Poker originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 19 Apr 2010 10:00:00 EST. Filed under: iMac
I'm about to buy a new iMac to replace the 20" that's been gracing my desktop since the Intel iMacs first arrived on the scene back in 2006. It's still a pretty good machine, with a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo CPU and 2 GB of RAM, but it's been somewhat sluggish for me lately and I want to replace it with something with a bit more horsepower. It's not that it's getting slower, but some of the apps I'm using on the iMac are severely taxing its capabilities and the 20" display is too small.
When I expressed my desire for a 27" Quad-Core iMac last week, a couple of my TUAW cohorts wondered why. Several asked why I didn't just get one of the new i5 or i7 MacBook Pros, while another said I should just go out and purchase a Mac mini and a good cheap 27" display. But no, I still like the iMac. While I really don't need to justify my personal purchasing decisions to my co-workers, I thought this might make good fodder for a post about an Apple product that doesn't get a lot of attention these days.TUAWFive reasons why I still like the iMac originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 19 Apr 2010 09:00:00 EST. Apple has quietly changed the shipping date for the iPad 3G in the online Apple Store. The new shipping date is listed as "by May 7th."
While this may be a slight disappointment for those who were waiting to order their iPad 3G until they were released, it appears that those that have previously pre-ordered the iPad 3G can still expect to receive theirs later this month. Several readers have informed us that pre-orders are still scheduled for "late April." Other readers indicate that they are seeing credit card charges for their 3G iPads, suggesting that those are almost ready for shipment.

Apple - IPad - Unofficial Apple Weblog - 3G - AppleStoreПереслать - AppleCare without Apple stores... still worth it
Filed under: Odds and ends
From the retailer's perspective, it's easy to see why they push these extended warranties. From a customer's perspective, though, it's a potential source of confusion or even animosity toward the retailer -- I had more than a few customers (usually older ones) ask me why they needed this warranty in the first place, why the company wouldn't just "stand behind their products." More interested in helping people than trying to BS them for either my own profit or the retailer's, often as not this meant I ended up not selling those extended warranties... it also meant I wasn't a salesman for very long. I won't say which retailer I worked for, but I will say that the memory of working there sears my mind to this day.
Most purchasers seem to think that extended warranties are a huge waste of money, and in many (if not most) cases they're correct. Like an idiot, I bought an extended warranty for my Wii back on launch day in 2006 -- that was $60 down the drain. I'll blame that one on standing in line all night in sub-freezing temperatures outside of Target to snag one. But when it comes to AppleCare, I have no hesitation about laying money down for that.
We've hit on the value proposition of AppleCare a few times on TUAW before. Sang related Megan's story of a dead MacBook, complete with a detailed analysis of why AppleCare is worth it. Robert made the case for AppleCare, and Cory's answer to the question, to buy AppleCare or not, was a resounding "Yes."
I'll add my voice to the chorus of TUAW writers in support of AppleCare -- not because I'm trying to sell it to you (despite the word "Apple" in "The Unofficial Apple Weblog," our only affiliation with the company is as fans and buyers of their products), but because AppleCare has saved me literally hundreds of dollars in repair costs, even though I live in a country without a single official Apple store. Read on to find out how AppleCare saved my bacon, and then decide for yourself whether it's worth it for you.TUAWAppleCare without Apple stores... still worth it originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 18 Apr 2010 22:00:00 EST.
