- The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs previews early
Filed under: Steve Jobs
We reported on Mike Daisey's monologue The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs earlier this year. The play was (and is still) scheduled for a run at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre from January 14 to February 27, 2011, but due to popular demand, the monologue will now preview for one night only on April 22 at the Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York. The play is a monologuist piece that "dives into the epic story of a real-life Willy Wonka whose personal obsessions profoundly affect our everyday lives."
You know, usually plays show longer "due to popular demand," not open nine months early. Just goes to show when you slap Steve Jobs' name or likeness on anything, you can sell it to people. On the other hand, Daisey's a pretty funny guy, so if you go see it I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself. And if you do see it, drop us a line to tell us what you thought!TUAWThe Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs previews early originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 17 Apr 2010 19:00:00 EST. Filed under: App Store
Though The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that Obama signed into law last month was a huge step in advancing universal health care for Americans, most of the dramatic benefits won't go into affect until 2014 (and even then, it's still not technically "universal"). But until we finally catch up to most of the other developed countries in the world, there's an iPhone app that can help Americans who are uninsured and struggling financially.
The Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPA) was founded in 2005 as a joint effort by America's pharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies to help patients find medical programs for which they may be eligible to obtain free or nearly-free medication and services. The PPA has now launched an iPhone and Blackberry app to give patients another resource to find the help they need. The app lets patients scroll through the medicines offered by PPA member programs or locate one of 10,000 free health care clinics across the United States.
The PPA app is free and available now in the App Store. For those of you without an iPhone or Blackberry that may need financial assistance in obtaining medication, you can check out the PPA's website or call toll-free 1-888-4PPA-NOW (1-888-477-2669) to see if you are eligible for help.

You bought your iPad, now you need a case. And since you decided to purchase a Wi-Fi iPad instead of waiting for the 3G model, you're trying to figure out how the heck to connect to the Internet on those occasions when you're away from Wi-Fi.
Sprint is coming to your rescue. Their new 4G case for iPad is really just a nice case with a special pocket for one of their Overdrive 4G (US$349, less with rebates and 2-year activation) routers, which gives you a really fast connection to the Internet in those locations where Sprint has rolled out their 4G WiMAX service (see the Sprint site for details).
How fast is really fast? 3 - 6 Mbps, which is considerably faster than the 600 Kbps - 1 Mbps you'll get with 3G service. You have to purchase the Overdrive separately at a Sprint or Best Buy store, and of course the iPad doesn't come with the case, but if you have a need for speed and a new, naked iPad, this is a pretty nice solution.
If you're not currently in a 4G service area, the Overdrive 4G router also works well with Sprint's 3G data service. You'll also gain a lot of new friends when you share your 4G connection with up to four other people.

When people ask if they should add RAM to their computers to improve performance, fellow blogger Erica Sadun says she typically replies, "YES! Just don't buy it from Apple!" Apple's RAM upgrades have typically run about double what I actually ended up paying for them elsewhere. However, as noted by astute observers over at MacRumors, Apple has covertly changed their pricing on build-to-order RAM configurations for 27-inch iMacs, bringing the price of an 8GB upgrade down to only about $25US more than competitors like Other World Computing.
Here are the old specs, courtesy of MacRumors:
And the new specs:
A price drop of $200 for the 8GB upgrade is surprising, but certainly welcome. I've always thought that Apple was running a scam targeted at the technically inept, charging them an extra 100% for not knowing better. Is this part of a trend toward more affordable, Apple-approved upgrades?

When asked if I wanted to review NDrive Australia & New Zealand (currently US$24.99, AU$29.99, and NZ$30.99), I was initially reluctant. "The problem with these nav apps is they don't really seem to offer me a compelling alternative to the free Maps app plus a co-pilot," I said. Since getting my iPhone 3G a bit over a year ago, my wife has been the human half of my turn-by-turn navigation system.
The biggest advantage she offers over any nav app is her ability to intelligently adapt to changing conditions. When it was pointed out to me that I won't always have a co-pilot with me, thus making it all but impossible to use the built-in Maps app without unintentionally going off-roading in my Toyota, I agreed to give NDrive Australia & New Zealand a try.
After using the app for a few days navigating around Palmerston North and some of the backcountry roads of New Zealand, I came away more impressed with the app than I thought I would be -- but it still has some flaws that will likely keep me from relying on it as my primary GPS app. Read on for a more comprehensive review.TUAWNDrive Australia/NZ: A competent GPS nav app with a few flaws originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 17 Apr 2010 12:00:00 EST. A student who says he was spied on by school officials on his Mac laptop has filed new claims in the case.
Harriton High School sophomore Blake Robbins claims pictures were taken of him while he was asleep and only partially dressed, and instant messages that he sent to friends were captured.
The Lower Merion school district is now conceding that the effort it was making to keep track of school owned laptops was misguided, and today the district said it would release the results of its own internal investigation "good and bad."
In a court filing, Robbins says the school captured more than 400 webcam images and screen shots using his computer. Robbins lawyer says that thousands of pictures were obtained from laptops issued to students by the school tech staff.
Lawyers involved in the case met Friday for a status check and to discuss pending issues.
According to an attorney for the Robbins family, school technology coordinator Carol Cafiero refused to answer questions during a recent deposition, citing her 5th Amendment rights against self-incrimination.
The suburban Philadelphia school has issued Mac laptops to 2,300 students at two high schools. The FBI joined the case in February.

Fortune's Apple 2.0 reports on Experian's Simmons survey of the top Apple markets in the US. Experian launched the survey in order to predict where consumers were most likely to line up to buy the iPad, and you can see the results above. Besides the list of the 206 most Mac'd out cities, the survey revealed another interesting number: 21.6% of US adults own or use an iPod, iPhone or Mac computer. That's right, one-fifth of Americans own some type of Apple hardware. What's more is that 21.6% doesn't included under-18s -- and how many teens have you seen without an iPod?
Also note that Apple fans tend to stick to urban areas for the most part -- there is a nice big oasis of Mac fans in Colorado and Nevada, but we wonder if the lower population density in those places makes the results a little weird. Also notice the lack of Apple ownership in the south -- Louisiana is not Mac country, apparently.
You can check out the full list of all 206 cities here. You'll need to register to download the results (PDF), but it's worth the look. For those of you who don't want to: the top five Mac-centric cities are: San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, CA; Boston, MA; San Diego, CA; New York, NY; and Washington, D.C. And since it's my second-home, I'll list the sixth, too: Chicago, IL.TUAWThe United States of Apple originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 17 Apr 2010 09:00:00 EST. Apple - iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - iPod - IPadПереслать - Winscape: Apple-powered fake windows
Filed under: Hardware
Just in time for the weekend, here's a technology that's arrived before its time, I think. Winscape is a set of two plasma televisions set up behind window panes, and hooked up to a Mac Pro. The Pro is running the custom Winscape software, which controls the "view" out of the windows according to a sensor (they show it in the video above attached to a baby, and it actually looks really large and pretty unwieldy). So as the sensor moves around the room, the view changes, as if you were moving angles while looking out of the windows to get a different view.
Oh, and the whole thing is controlled with an iPhone app -- there are a few different views, as you can see in the video above. You can buy the Winscape software for $10 over on the website, and the remote app is $2 in the store, but of course you've got to buy the plasma televisions and Mac Pro yourself (and cut a window into your wall and/or install them all the way you want them). So no, it's not a very practical solution -- at least until houses come standard with video windows.
But it would be great to wake up every morning and be able to look out the window and see whatever you want to see. Maybe someday we'll see a setup like this as a more accessible investment.TUAWWinscape: Apple-powered fake windows originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 16 Apr 2010 22:00:00 EST. Marketcircle, the Canadian software firm that brought you Daylite, Daylite Touch, Billings, and Billings Touch has just announced the next generation of their time-tracking and billing solution. Billings Pro takes advantage of many of the features built into other Marketcircle products and takes Billings to a new level as a multi-user application.
The new application will include a server piece (like Daylite), a way to use the application offline and then sync to the server (once again built upon Daylite), over-the-air sync (as with Daylite Touch), and Marketcircle's expertise in desktop and mobile user interfaces.
The application is still in development, and beta testing won't begin for a few months yet. If you're an existing Billings user and would like to receive consideration as a possible beta tester, fill out this online form and you may hear from Marketcircle in a few months.
At this time, no ship date or price has been determined for Billings Pro.TUAWMarketcircle announces Billings Pro, needs beta testers originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 16 Apr 2010 21:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

In giving testimony at a Congressional hearing as to whether he will lead the U.S. Cyber Command, Lieutenant General Keith B. Alexander, current Director of the NSA, mentioned that he owned an iPad. Is that relevant to his his future role of defending America from cyber terrorists? Nope. But how cool is it that the freakin' Director of the NSA loves his iPad so much he brings it up at a Congressional hearing, unprompted? Pretty damn cool.
As a matter of fact, when the Lieutenant General brought up that he had an iPad, national security took a slight sideline when a congressman returned to the subject of the iPad moments later. According to the actual Congressional Record:
Congressman: I'm tempted to get a critical review of the iPad, but perhaps we can do that--
Director of the NSA: [It's] Wonderful.
Congressman: "Wonderful." I will put that on -- for the record.TUAWCongressional record states the iPad is "wonderful" originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 16 Apr 2010 20:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
