- Retro handset for the iPad is fashion-forward, techno-backward
Filed under: iPad
Here's something very high on the cool scale. The retro-cool Moshi Moshi 01 handset (MM01) can be used with mobile phones, VoIP via USB and yes, iPhones and iPads.
Old-timers like me remember back when talking on the phone meant standing next to the wall, tethered (physically, not Bluetooth) to a hunk of plastic and metal, speaking into a bulky handset that hung from a 2- or 3-foot length of cord. The folks at Native Union have brought the sexy back with the MM01. When fitted with the proper adapter, the MM01 can connect to most mobile phones including the iPhone.
Seriously, we think this thing is great. For $US29.99, you get the handset and 3.5mm connector jack. Other adapters are sold separately.

Long a Mac desktop staple, OmniGraffle for OS X offers an interactive editor for laying out charts and diagrams. It's a useful tool for planners, managers, and designers. I have not been a serious user of the product, nor do I own the latest OS X version, but I have used the software enough to recognize that it has made its own niche in the Mac ecosystem. The desktop versions I've used have been solid, robust and, most importantly, they've gotten the job done when the job is to lay out and edit organizational wiring diagrams.
Hearing that OmniGraffle was coming to the iPad surprised me. It wasn't the kind of application that I'd expect to move smoothly to a touch based interface, given its reliance on a vast number of menus, palettes, and other tweaking elements that let you manipulate your creations just so.
The Omni Group developers thought otherwise. They envisioned a "back of the napkin" style application that would let you create diagrams on the go, whether at a business meeting or sitting on an Airport shuttle. They created an iPad application that depended on fingers rather than mice or styluses, to allow users to create high-quality editable and manipulatable presentations.

The Dell Mini 10v, choice of netbook hackintosh owners everywhere, has apparently been discontinued as of a week ago. I discovered that today when I couldn't find any on Dell's site, and confirmed it with a live chat with a support representative who told me it was discontinued last week. A message was left for Dell's Media Relations team but was not immediately returned.
Dell's naming system is confusing, so it would be easy to see the "Mini 10" and think that it is available, but the "10v" has a chipset that works with Mac OS X; the regular Mini 10 does not.
Coincidentally, last night I setup my first Dell Mini 10v running Mac OS X. I had my Snow Leopard DVD, the free Netbook Installer application, the instructions from Gizmodo, and an 8GB USB thumb drive; setting this up could not have been any easier. The results are pretty cool, if you are willing to accept the obvious tradeoffs inherent in a netbook.
Today I even ran Software Update, and have the beast running 10.6.3 without a hitch.
As of this writing, there are still a few refurbished models available at Dell's outlet. Although the Mini 10v has been a hackintosher's dream machine, I have no doubt that other computers will come along which prove equally as hackintoshable (I realize that these are made-up words).
Update: A Dell spokesperson tells TUAW that the product was naturally end-of-lifed. Intel launched its Pine Trail Atom processor last year; Dell will be refreshing the mini line with that updated processor. The spokesperson could not clarify the degree to which updated units would be Hackintoshable.TUAWHackintosh-friendly Dell Mini 10v discontinued originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 14 Apr 2010 16:00:00 EST. Steve Jobs has been surprising customers lately with personal replies to their emails. He's done it again this week with the longest message yet.
According to Mac Soda, customer Alex J. felt that the recent updates of Final Cut Pro (FCP) have gotten the application off track. As do many zealots who feel their faith slipping away, he asked for a sign:
"Steve,
Getting worried about Apple's interest in Final Cut. Last updates were not stellar. I heard a bunch of engineers were dropped too - give us a sign you still care about Pro Video, not just the iPad.
Thanks,
Alex"
Much to Alex's surprise, Jobs replied. Not only that, he was motivated enough to share three whole sentences. Steve's email reads:
"We certainly do. Folks who left were in support, not engineering. Next release will be awesome."
Now we're excited for the next "awesome" release of FCP. We like this new "chatty" Steve.

Steve Job - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - Final Cut ProПереслать - From iPhone to iPad: Plants vs Zombies
Filed under: iPad
How do old favorites hold up on the iPad? In our "From iPhone to iPad" series, TUAW revisits iPhone applications that have transitioned to the iPad. We look at their latest incarnation and see how the new measures up to the old. Today, TUAW looks at Plants vs Zombies HD.
An action-strategy game published by PopCap (they're the people who brought you Bejeweled, Peggle and Bookworm, among other popular titles), Plants vs Zombies forces you to defend your house from the zombie hordes with plant-based protection like pea shooters and cherry bombs. It's a castle defense game but one with a great twist and clever features.
First ported from desktop systems to the iPhone, PvZ was an instant hit, receiving accolades and a fanatical user base. It has now been expanded to the iPad in an upgraded "High Definition" format. The iPad version includes enhanced graphics (as you would expect), an iPad-only mini game ("Buttered Popcorn!"), and exclusive iPad-only achievements for more fun during game play.
So how does the upgraded version compare to the original? It's marvelous. The expanded room fits the game dynamics. Every element of the game from help screens to the game board to the size of the pieces really matches the iPad proportions. It plays so well on an iPad that you'll wonder why it ever was a hit on a tiny little iPhone screen. Fellow blogger Dave Caolo puts it this way: if Twitter clients could be said to define mobile handsets as a platform, then Plants vs Zombies was meant for the iPad.
Like the original version, Plants vs Zombies remains a delightful family-friendly game that's playable by and accessible to a wide range of ages and skill sets. As far as TUAW is concerned, the iPad version is a must buy.

According to AppleInsider, Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster expects Apple's stock to hit US$299 by the end of the year.
When Apple revealed that it had sold 50 million iPhones at the iPhone OS 4 event, the analyst realized that meant at least 6.9 million iPhones were sold in the March quarter, and that's a conservative estimate. With those numbers in mind, Munster predicts that Apple will sell 7.5 million iPhones in 2010's first quarter. That figure would represent an impressive 93 percent year-over-year growth in iPhone sales. Note that Apple realized a 90 percent increase y/y last quarter.
As a result, Munster has bumped his predicted end-of-year price of AAPL up from $287 to $299 per share. Meanwhile, Munster also raised his Q1 Mac sales estimates from 2.6 million to 2.9 million. Take his numbers with your choice of salt grain size, as he did shank the iPad launch estimate pretty badly with a last-minute bump in expected sales.

Likewise, the UK's O2 carrier has released a tease which reads, "O2 today announced that it will offer dedicated iPad price plans for all models from the end of May in the UK." Again, no details were offered.

Apple has released an update to its Backup software. The update also re-brands the Backup application as MobileMe Backup. Backup was originally offered to .Mac subscribers as an easy backup solution.
In 2006 when Apple introduced Time Machine, people widely assumed that Apple would abandon its much-neglected Backup app. When Apple discontinued .Mac and made the transition to MobileMe, Backup was still available to MobileMe users via a folder on their iDisk, but was never advertised as a feature on the MobileMe website. With today's re-branding and software update, it seems like Apple still feels the Backup app is still a relevant feature for its MobileMe users.

Israelis had to wait a long time for the local launch of the iPhone; it was late last year before the country's three cell carriers began selling it, and some estimates indicated more than 80,000 unlocked phones were already in use there. With that kind of pent-up demand for iStuff, you'd think that scores of travelers would be trying to bring their US-bought iPads to Medinat Yisrael ahead of the official launch.
It may be months before iDigital, the official Israeli distributor for Apple products, has a localized version of the iPad ready for sale domestically -- especially with the worldwide delay in rollout announced this morning. A flood of US iPads making aliyah via luggage and briefcases would certainly put a crimp in future sales.

OpenFeint's VP of Engineering, Jakob Wilkerson, took the stage here at 360iDev in San Jose to talk about something most people might not have expected: Game Center. Ever since Apple's official social gaming network was announced last week, the question's been in the air about what will happen to all of those unofficial gaming networks, of which OpenFeint is the largest. Wilkerson took the news in stride, however. As CEO Jason Citron told us last week, OpenFeint isn't going anywhere, and as you can see from their chart above, OpenFeint still believes that they can build more social game services, in the form of OpenFeint X, on top of Apple's official offerings.
Wilkerson talked about Game Center in terms of potential; he used examples from OpenFeint to explain how implementing leaderboards and friends lists in the right ways can really open up player interest in a game. OpenFeint often talks internally about bringing, both, hardcore and casual game players into the fold, and their different online features target those various audiences.
We also got a chance to talk to Citron again regarding his thinking about OpenFeint so far, and what the company plans to do when Apple unveils its official plan. Orbicule has released Undercover 4 and thieves should be very afraid. Undercover is theft-recovery software for Mac OS X that's been around for the last four years. The software allows users to grab screen shots of the thief using their computer via the Mac's built-in iSight camera and will also send screen shots of your stolen Mac's desktop back to you so you can see what the thief is doing. Undercover also uses Skyhook Wireless technology to locate your stolen Mac within a range of 10-20 meters.
Undercover 4 adds the ability for users to remotely monitor a stolen Mac using the UndercoverCenter.com web application. You can use the new UndercoverCenter by yourself or in conjunction with your local police force if they are helping you track down your stolen laptop. The UndercoverCenter will allow you to receive a Google Earth file pinpointing the stolen Mac's locations. In addition, you can use UndercoverCenter to completely lock the lost or stolen Mac and set a custom message that is displayed on top of all other applications. Best of all, if the thief is using your Mac in a public location, Undercover allows you to tell your stolen Mac to start shouting "Help! Help! I'm a stolen Mac" via VoiceOver technology.

There are always a few SDK vendors lurking around any developer convention, and 360iDev is no different. However, unlike a lot of programs that work as a go-between for the iPhone Software Development Kit and some other language ("middleware," in developer-speak), Ansca Mobile isn't worried about their SDK at all. While there was a bit of a scare about non-Apple development kits earlier this week, Ansca assured us that Corona SDK is good to go; it allows a developer to write up an application in Flash Actionscript or directly in Corona with LUA, and then the app will deliver an iPhone, iPad, or even an Android application that is ready to go on the App Store.
What does this mean for us gamers? It doesn't mean much -- there's not a lot of difference between a game written in Flash and ported across (like TapDots, out on the App Store right now) and a game written natively in Apple's Xcode, according to the Ansca folks (who actually worked as engineers on the original Flash Mobile implementation). The difference is much bigger for developers, though; they basically have to write just one app, and they can then port it across to another platform in just a scant few hours.TUAW360iDev: Ansca Mobile's Corona SDK originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 14 Apr 2010 10:30:00 EST. We've covered quite a few board and card games in this ongoing series of iPhone / iPad app reviews, but I haven't been as excited about any of them as I was when I saw that there was not just one but two Skat apps available for the iDevices. Considering that Skat is my absolute favorite card game of all time (in second place: SWCCG, an entirely different beast), I knew I'd need to download them both (at US$4.99 each, sadly) and see if either one offered an experience that is in any way similar to playing against real humans. The answer: as much as a touch-screen interface can replace your friends, they do.
The first of the two apps is called Skat and its icon looks like this . The other is called ProSkat and has this icon . Skat's icon is much better-looking and does a better job of instantly identifying the app as Skat, but in almost every other aspect, ProSkat is the winner. Read on to see why both of these apps have their place and how they allow you to cleverly bid and take tricks in style on your iPhone.

The sun had not even set on Tuesday when UBS analyst Maynard Um expressed his pleasure over Apple's new MacBook Pros.
"The MacBook Pro refresh positions Apple well heading into the education and back to school spending seasons," said Um, adding that Macs are still a critical part of Apple's growth, and that most financial expectations for the company could prove conservative.
Um is expecting something else on top of the hardware, or over it really. In the note he reiterated his firm's view that Apple is working on its very own cloud service or services.
His forecast: "We envision a service that allows access to media-focused content of iTunes, user-generated content of MobileMe and social networking integration from any Apple product," meaning Maynard sees Apple-branded clouds on the horizon, and those -- he thinks -- will lead to the sale of more Apple hardware.
Um maintained his "Buy" rating on Apple shares and his price target of $280.

The suggestions ranged from the broad ("have a good idea") to the specific ("Use the What's New section in the App Store to promote your other apps"), but over the hour or so, the panelists came up with a lot of solid advice for developers looking to get the word out about their App Store offerings.TUAW360iDev: Marketing and promotion on the App Store originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 13 Apr 2010 22:00:00 EST. iPhone - App Store - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPadПереслать - CameraBag makes the trek over to the iPad
Filed under: iPad
CameraBag (U.S. $2.99) is a popular little utility that has had life on both the Mac and PC platforms, as well as the iPhone. Now it's made it onto the iPad, where it will be welcomed by photographers.
CameraBag is a photographic cropping, framing, and filter tool. The app comes with some preset filters like "Helga," which gives you a square format image with washed out highlights and some vignetting. "1962" provides dynamic black and white images, and "Magazine" delivers saturated tones to your photos. There are other presets as well, plus a button that generates a random variation of an existing preset. If you don't like what you see, you just keep hitting the button until you get something you like.
What are the downsides of CameraBag? Well, there's no control of the cropping, so you can't move the object in the frame. The frames are pretty basic, and there's no choice for the color of the frames. Basically, you get white, except for the cinema frame that consists of black bars.
CameraBag preserves the resolution of your originals, and it's possible to scale them down if you'd rather have a smaller size for posting or sending photos via mail.
Finished images are saved back to the iPad library or can be emailed. Some people will say that without a built-in iPad camera, there's no reason to even bother with photo apps on the platform. That viewpoint is short-sighted. Through a USB connection, you can import photos from iPhoto. With the pending iPad camera kit, you'll be able to pull in photo files (even RAW format) from your digital camera, and then modify the images at your pleasure. This app and Photogene, which I reviewed a few days ago, aren't really Photoshop on the iPad, but they do go a long way toward providing a way to edit your photos for either improvement or fun.
Be sure to visit the CameraBag website for more examples of what the app can do.
Here are a few of my own samples:

iPhone - Photography - IPad - Apple - CameraBagПереслать - iPhone Screentaker updated with iPad templates
Fabian Kreiser has recently updated his screen capturing app for Mac OS X to include support iPad screen captures. Like previous iterations of the app, version 1.2 of iPhone Screentaker allows you to add certain design elements to your iPad screenshots. These include encasing them an iPad and setting the orientation background color. Images can then be saved as either JPG or PNG, with the option to scale to fit iTunes.
One little quirk about the app is the "Capture Screenshot" button. While its existence would seemingly indicate an associated action, in my experience clicking on it didn't do anything. I wasn't able to find anything documenting its function, either.
While you can certainly accomplish a similar end with an image editor, such as Adobe Photoshop or Pixelmator, that may prove too time consuming or difficult for some.
Screen capturing has been a feature on the iPhone since iPhone OS 2.0, and taking a screen capture is as simple as pressing down the sleep and home button at the same time. The feature serves a myriad of purposes, from facilitating the marketing of an app and documentation workflow for developers, and for allowing reviewers, like us here at TUAW, to highlight certain features of an app.
iPhone Screentaker is available as a free download at Fabian Kreiser's site.

IPhone - IPad - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - iTunesПереслать - Hands on with Hangman RSS HD for iPad
Filed under: iPad
I am fond of fellow TUAW blogger Dave Caolo and friendly with Brian Akaka, and were it not for those associations there is no way I would have tried out Hangman RSS HD for iPad by Finger Arts, because on paper the game just sounded absolutely dire. But Dave had given it a spin at Macworld and found it playable, and Brian Akaka asked very nicely if I would give it an honest try.
And what do you know? I liked it. A lot. Hangman RSS HD turns out to be insanely addicting and challenging.
It's a standard hangman game played with real time RSS feeds from all over the world. That means you're just about as likely to find a story about horrible events as one that's...family friendly. The first game I played was about a 9-year old Yemini bride. I nearly didn't make it to the second game, but I'm glad that I persevered. Once you understand that the game uses unfiltered, real world topics you'll be able to switch your attention to the word challenges and catching up on the news.
There's not a lot to explain about how the game works. Nearly everyone has played Hangman, the game where you get several chances to guess the letters in an obscured word. When you guess too many wrong letters, you lose. Hangman RSS keeps track of your successful solutions and you can challenge yourself to keep getting longer and longer "runs" of wins.
There are several levels of game play, where the number of obscured words increases from one to two, to three, and so forth. A small semi-obscured clue appears at the bottom of each puzzle, and you can "dig" into a story to read the original articles directly from the game.
The iPad delivery really lends itself to reading the news web pages. Its expansive screen means the tiles and interaction elements really have room to "breathe." The game is a very good match to the iPad.
I found myself playing this game for hours. I also (inadvertently) learned how to spell the names of much-mourned Polish leaders. There's a lot of that going on in Hangman RSS. When you play with real news, there's a bitter that goes along with the sweet. It's real but it can be hard.
Hangman RSS HD for iPad costs $2.99 at the App Store.TUAWHands on with Hangman RSS HD for iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 13 Apr 2010 19:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

How do old favorites hold up on the iPad? In our "From iPhone to iPad" series, TUAW revisits iPhone applications that have transitioned to the iPad. We look at their latest incarnation and see how the new measures up to the old. Today, TUAW looks at Labyrinth 2.
I loved Labyrinth 2 when I first tested it for iPhone. So I was delighted when developer Carl Loodberg of Illusion Labs offered me the opportunity to try out the updated version for the iPad. As I wrote about the iPhone version, Labyrinth 2 offers a beautifully designed and fun-to-play classic wooden labyrinth with metal ball game that's fun to use, even for the manually uncoordinated like myself.
Labyrinth 2 for iPad is all that -- and more. Loodberg has brought all the visual appeal that made the iPhone version a treasure and upgraded the graphics and interaction for the iPad display. Unlike many accelerometer games that are hindered by the iPad's larger form factor (that no longer quite matches the size of your hand), Labyrinth 2 HD actually benefits from the size jump. In fact, the iPad version more closely matches the real-world size of the original wooden toy.
Labyrinth 2 HD hasn't sacrificed the great electronic touches that made the original stand out. You can still use magnets, shooters, ball doublers and other fancifully delightful elements to transform a simple game of balance manipulation into an arcade. I particularly love the pin-ball style bumpers and the little buttons that unlock obstacles.
Labyrinth 2, in both its original iPhone ($4.99) and updated iPad HD ($7.99) form, offers a great iPhone OS game. It is priced slightly above the market but provides value for that cost.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says more kids want iPhones. The Apple 2.0 blog has Mr. Munster hanging out with high schoolers for one of his semi-annual surveys of teen buying habits in the US.
In a research note on the survey, Munster said, "Apple's dominance in the [consumer electronics] and online music markets is going seemingly unchecked."
According to his findings:
- Plans to buy an iPhone in the next six months have risen from 16% a year ago to 22% last fall to 31% today
- 14% of the kids surveyed already own an iPhone, up from last year's 8%, but down a point from last fall's 15%
- 87% of the kids surveyed own an MP3 player, 92% of which are iPods.
- While 82% of teens download music, only 43% do it legally. But, of that 43%, 92% say they buy their music from Apple's iTunes Store.

Jay "Saurik" Freeman took the stage here at 360iDev last night to explain the mobile application marketplace. The entire mobile application marketplace, that is. Most people wrongly perceive the App Store to be a simple user-and-developer relationship, but in reality, it's a much more complicated place, with lots of inputs and outputs for time, money, and work. You can see the big picture of his chart above -- the "user" is the faceless woman near the middle, and the "developer" is the bearded man to her left. But everything else is a company or a connection that Saurik spoke about.
Saurik runs the jailbreak app store Cydia (which has over 10,000 packages available, hundreds of which for a fee, on which they've pulled in over $1.3 million so far), and so he's closely interested in almost all facets of this relationship chart, and how money can flow from users of all kinds to developers across the world. In an entertaining and very insightful presentation, he basically walked the audience through his chart and, piece by piece, gave a wide-reaching overview of how the mobile app marketplace works today.TUAW360iDev: Saurik on the mobile application market originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 13 Apr 2010 17:30:00 EST. No iPads for the Tigers. Princeton University's Office of Information Technology is asking students to please stop using Apple's latest wonder gadget on the campus wireless network.
According to the OIT, the issue is as follows: "Network monitoring has shown that many iPad devices are causing a problem on the campus network. These devices are continuing to use an IP address they have been leased well beyond the time they should."
The OIT says users who keep trying to connect may find their devices blocked, so that the stability and reliability of campus network services can be maintained.
This is not the first time iThings have run afoul of higher learning's network wonks. Duke University suffered network outages around the release of the iPhone in 2007 and blamed those on the iPhone invasion; those hiccups eventually turned out to be a problem with Cisco routers, not Apple's phone.

How do old favorites hold up on the iPad? In our "From iPhone to iPad" series, TUAW revisits iPhone applications that have transitioned to the iPad. We look at their latest incarnation and see how the new measures up to the old. Today, TUAW looks at Zen Bound 2.
It was just about a year ago when I first played the original Zen Bound game on the iPhone. Having been recommended to me by Dave Caolo after it was originally reviewed on TUAW by Mike Schramm, I loved the game's beautiful graphics and sound design. Starting its life as a physics emulation game called Zen Bondage, Zen Bound became be a huge breakout hit on the iPhone.
You play the game by wrapping rope around objects until you've covered a certain percentage of the object in question, avoiding running out of rope in the process. You progress by ascending a "game tree," unlocking new puzzles as you succeed in wrapping each object.
The iPad version of Zen Bound 2 brings the same high quality design and interaction as its predecessors, all nicely updated to the new screen size. I found it a great deal of fun to play, although the puzzles are much harder this time around -- much as you might expect with a sequel.
The big question is this: does the bigger screen improve the playing experience? I'm going to say no. That's not a slam at the application. It's a great game family, regardless of whether you play on the iPhone or iPad, and that's where the "no" comes from. There's nothing particularly innovative in the iPad release beyond the revised levels and a new "paint bomb" mode, which I never actually got to test. But that's okay. Zen Bound 2 is still basically the same excellent game; the iPad version has been competently upsized and the results are good.
Zen Bound 2 is a worthy successor to Zen Bound. If you loved the original, you're sure to enjoy this update. Zen Bound 2 for iPad costs US$7.99 at the App Store. It's a beautiful, fun-to-play application. If you're playing with kids, you may want to start with the $2.99 iPhone original version, which offers easier puzzles before moving on to the iPad version, which my children found far more challenging.

iPhone - Zen Bound - IPad - AppStore - AppleПереслать - hacksugar: Hiding Apple's built-in applications
TUAW reader Joe Thompson pointed us to this hint over at Mac OS X Hints that helps you hide the standard applications that ship with the iPhone, without jailbreaking. This allows you to use those spots for your preferred 3rd party alternatives without sacrificing valuable home screen real estate or messing with a lot of ugly application rearrangement in iTunes. Thompson writes, "I've removed Stocks, Weather, and Notes, as I have better 3rd party apps for all three."
You'll need a Windows-based system to sync your iPhone and at least a trial copy of iBackupBot. The technique involves enabling parental restrictions and editing your springboard property list (the file that controls how your iPhone home screen behaves) to flag the application and update the icon layouts. The iBackupBot program allows you to replace that property list file on your iPhone after modifying it on Windows. The Mac OS X Hints write-up has complete directions.
At this time, we haven't yet found an OS X solution to do the same for an un-jailbroken phone, although we are consulting with some of our favorite sources to see if they can come to the rescue for non-Windows users.TUAWhacksugar: Hiding Apple's built-in applications originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 13 Apr 2010 16:00:00 EST. Filed under: App Review, iPad
Yesterday, after I posted the Alice for iPad preview video, Ben Roberts, who is one of the app creators, emailed us here at TUAW with promo codes for the application. I downloaded a copy of the app, installed it on my iPad, and spent a lovely half-hour reading out loud to my son.
If you like reading with your kids, the iPad (and especially Alice for iPad) demands accommodations. The app is engaging. Almost too engaging. The urge to shout "Stop doing that with my iPad, it will BREAK!" recurs frequently, especially when the boy realizes you can make Alice's neck grow or send candies flying around the screen.
So sit on the floor, not on the couch, preferably on a carpet rather than on wood. Seriously: a typical boy + a standard iPad + an app that encourages said boy to strongly shake the iPad = a disaster waiting to happen, unless you take precautions.
That having been said, we are loving the book. I do wish there were other books of this style written in a more modern voice, because I did have to do a lot of translations for pastilles, marmalade, and hookahs, which is of course a "learning experience." I just wish it wasn't quite so much or so often of a "learning experience," in that I'd adore seeing this kind of book for, say, E. Nesbit or Edgar Eager or Dianna Wynne Jones.
So, bottom line? Loving it. Just remember to sit on the floor and enjoy your kids while they're still small enough to smell good and cuddle. Reading out loud is one of our favorite things and Alice is just making it better. Alice for iPad costs $8.99.

Those who need a mobile studio and have very strong backs may be inclined to consider the Big Papi of Apple laptops, the 17" MacBook Pro. Today's update adds even more brawn to Apple's beast. Here are the details.
There is one main configuration, featuring the 2.53GHz Intel Core i5; the 2.66GHz Intel Core i7 CPU is a build-to-order option. As with the other models, the 17" starts off with 4GB of RAM (upgradable to 8GB), and comes standard with a 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive, with the following upgrade options:- 500GB Serial ATA Drive (7200 rpm)
- 128GB Solid State Drive
- 256GB Solid State Drive
- 512GB Solid State Drive
The customer who buys a 17" MacBook Pro typically needs to run processor- and graphics-intensive apps in the field, so performance is very important in this machine. The addition of the i5 and i7 chips help to realize that need. For example, the Turbo Boost feature will dynamically boost the speed of both cores while using the processor-intensive apps that these machines typically run.
Additionally, the new NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M discrete graphics processor cooks with 48 processing cores and (up to) 512MB of dedicated video memory. Yet, it's even more energy efficient than previous GPUs.
It looks like a worthy upgrade if you ask us. The 17" MacBook Pro starts at $2,299 for the 2.53GHz Intel Core i5 and goes up from there. If you get one of these monstrosities, have fun. It looks like a fantastic machine.TUAWBig Kahuna: The new 17" MacBook Pro originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 13 Apr 2010 15:00:00 EST. He's a developer himself (his company, Critical Thought Games, has releasedtwogames (Update: Three -- we forgot geoSpark) in the App Store so far, and he's got plans for more), but he's also become a sort of guru for iPhone devs, giving guidance in terms of how to get noticed and sell apps in the App Store, and on the tactical and motivational fronts as well. Here at 360iDev, he gave a rousing speech about how self-made developers need to put together vision, a commitment, and lots and lots of persistence in order to get their apps just right, and out on Apple's platform.
After the talk (which included anecdotes about Coca Cola founder John Pemberton's original vision to mix wine and cocaine, and how Whatley's own experiences with a pickup artist taught him that it's OK to fail), we got a chance to sit down with Whatley and talk about who iPhone developers are, his plans for the iPad, and his first reaction to last week's iPhone 4.0 announcements.

Apple - MacBook - Intel Core 2 - macbookpro - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Overview: The new 15" MacBook Pro
Filed under: Macbook Pro
Earlier today, Apple released new MacBook Pros. The 15", middle-of-the-line model hits the sweet spot for many MBP customers, and this latest iteration is just as desirable as its predecessors.
This model comes in two main configurations, distinguished by either an Intel Core i5 (2.4GHz or 2.53GHz) or Core i7 (2.66GHz) processor. Apple claims that they boost performance by 50% over the previous generation MacBook Pros (I can only imagine what my experience would be switching from a 2GHz Intel Core Duo).
All configurations start off with 4GB of RAM (upgradable to 8GB). As for the hard drive, the base 2.53GHz i5 and 2.66GHz i7 feature a 500GB Serial ATA Drive (5400 rpm) with several upgrade options, including:- 500GB Serial ATA Drive (7200 rpm)
- 128GB Solid State Drive
- 256GB Solid State Drive
- 512GB Solid State Drive
As for graphics, the 2.4GHz and 2.53GHz i5 machines feature the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M with 256MB, while the 2.66GHz i7 model boosts it up to 512MB.
From there, the usual options and accessories are available, like glossy vs. non-glossy display options (with the higher-resolution panel) and pre-installed software like iWork, Final Cut Express, Aperture and more.
So what do they run? The 2.4GHz, 2.53GHz and 2.66GHz models start at $1,799, $1,999 and $2,199 respectively. Filed under: Macbook Pro
Update: While Engadget originally reported that Optimus was behind the MBP power-saving switch feature, AppleInsider is citing NVIDIA representatives that the feature isn't based on their tech -- they say it's home-grown by Apple. Thanks to our commenters for pointing this out.
Great power is lurking inside the new MacBook Pros, just waiting to be unleashed. Along with support for up to 8GB of RAM and the heftier i5 and i7 processors, the new machines also include on-the-fly GPU switchingcourtesy of NVIDIA's GeForce GT 330M and 'Optimus,' as the company calls its dynamic handoff feature.which NVIDIA says is Apple-original. The power-saving trick has already appeared on several Windows laptops.
As was pointed out by Gizmodo back in October of 2008, the original dual-GPU MacBook Pro models (with the 9400M/9600M GT card combo) were capable of dynamic switching on the fly. The bad news was that Mac OS X hadn't "switched on" the feature, even though it did workin Boot Campon similarly-equipped Windows laptops.
The good news is that now we see Apple supporting the feature in software for the newer gear -- but will it ever work its way back to the old reliables? Imagine vintage MBPs switching between the GPUs as needed, without having to log in and out. Better yet, the GPU could switch depending on state (plugged in or unplugged?) or even per application... the power management boost would be delightful.
Now that we seeNVIDIA'sGPU management technology helping save power on new MBPs, we have to wonder: will older machines be able to take advantage of the on-demand switching with a firmware upgrade? Only The Shadow knows.TUAWBehind the scenes, Optimus (not) at work on new MBPs? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 13 Apr 2010 12:40:00 EST.
