- Dual booting Mac OS X on iPad
Some can't wait to get their hands on the device, while others could care less. The device, the Apple iPad, is set to launch on Saturday, April 3, 2010. Earlier today, TUAW unearthed a hidden feature on the iPad (via an envelope slipped under the door of our headquarters in Roswell, NM) that may even force many iPad naysayers to consider purchasing it.
We've discoverd a way to dual-boot into Mac OS X and the iPad's operating system (which is a modified iPhone OS). And here, we'll show you how to execute this unpublished hack.
First, reset your iPad. You can do this by holding down the iPad's power and home button at the same time. Like the iPhone, the iPad boots up to an Apple logo. Pay attention here, because it's the most important part. Right when you see the logo appear, switch on the "screen rotation lock" button. This button, situated just above the volume button, deactivates the iPad's accelerometer.
Now, the following should appear on your iPad's screen. That's right, it's Konami's Contra. Konami has recently announced that it will be bringing over some of its classics to the iPad. And the first of these classics is Contra.
At the Contra start screen, press this sequence of buttons on the on-screen controller: up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a, select, start. If successful, you'll hear the Mac OS X startup chime, and the iPad's screen will then go into diagnostic boot and display the following binary values before booting into Mac OS X.01000001 01110000 01110010 01101001 01101100 00100000 01000110 01101111 01101111 01101100 01110011

Apple has released a few updates for its Time Capsule and Airport products.
AirPort Utility 5.5.1 for Mac includes general bug fixes and addresses the following issues: Not importing all settings when importing a configuration and not propagating MAC address control lists when using an extended network. The update weighs in at 10.24MB.
Apple Time Capsule & AirPort Base Station 7.5.1 provides several fixes for the latest Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme Base Station (Late 2009) including an issue with wireless performance in the 5GHz band and an issue with creating a Guest Network in the 5GHz band. Apple recommends that the above AirPort Utility 5.5.1 (Windows version here) or later be installed before updating to Firmware version 7.5.1. The update requites Mac OS X 10.5.7 or later, Windows XP SP3 or later, Windows Vista SP1 or later, or Windows 7.

With the iPad launch just two days away and new iPad news flooding the net almost every hour, we want to remind all our readers that today is April Fools' Day -- so take what you hear with a grain of salt. The web is already bursting with April Fools' pranks. Some of my favorites are:
Google Translate for Animals -- an Android app that translates animal sounds into human speech using Google's "animal linguistic database."
The Dharma Initiative Alarm Clock -- there's only two settings: one-minute warning and electromagnetic cataclysm mode.
Google Street View in 3D -- go to Street View on and Google Map and you'll see a 3D icon. Glasses not included.
Google Mobile Search "Where am I?" -- you'll be surprised to find where you are.
The iCade, iPad Arcade Cabinet -- Donkey Kong never looked so good.
Starbucks introduces the plenta and the micra - new coffee sizes for the modern appetite
Besides a day for pranks, April 1, 2010 is Apple's 34th anniversary. Apple was founded this on this day in 1976. iPhone - IPad - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - iTunesПереслать - Rumor: Apple's iPhone 4.0 to support multitasking, Expose-like interface
Filed under: Rumors
Rumors are flying hot and heavy about a new update coming to the iPhone this summer. AppleInsider has another big rumored feature: Multitasking. According to their sources, Apple will finally introduce third-party multitasking on the new iPhone. Of course, they're doing it the way that they want to and utilizing an Expose-like interface. Two presses on the Home button will supposedly bring up a list of icons, or names of the apps currently running, and then the user will be able to choose from those.
Notifications won't go away; AI says that Apple is still concerned about battery life and network performance, so whenever it's possible to keep an app alive simply with notifications, they'll advocate that solution rather than running it in the background all of the time. However, it's also noted that jailbreaking is currently the only way for a third-party to multitask on an iPhone, and the company hopes to end a lot of piracy and jailbreak concerns by providing an official solution.
This isn't the first time we've heard rumors about a multitasking system like this, and it probably won't be the last. Once the iPad is out of the way, it's very likely that we'll next see the iPhone updated, and it would be a smart move to finally allow users to run more than one app at a time.TUAWRumor: Apple's iPhone 4.0 to support multitasking, Expose-like interface originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 01 Apr 2010 02:00:00 EST. iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - Apple - FlickrПереслать - Wolfram Alpha lowers iPhone app price, will give refunds
Filed under: Software
Well here's an interesting twist on the Wolfram Alpha saga -- after initially releasing their "knowledge system" on the iPhone and then pulling it and trying to go premium with a $50 iPhone app, they've now reversed their position once again. The iPhone app will drop back down to $1.99 on Sunday, and there will again be a free mobile site accessible from the iPhone (and presumably the iPad as well). Wolfram Alpha seems to be cognizant of their mistaken decision to try and go premium on the app, and they're even offering refunds for those who purchased the app before this announcement.
It's great that everyone will have access to the app again (and we're sure they'll see a lot more usage as a result), but it does say something about the App Store when an app with as much function as Wolfram Alpha can't find a premium selling point. Hopefully they'll find some other way to monetize and keep the service up and running. Assuming this isn't actually a bad April Fool's story (the mobile site is back up and running now, even though the app price isn't scheduled to change until Sunday), we'll see how Wolfram Alpha does with this new philosophy.
Update: Apparently the price has just been dropped. The app is now $1.99 in the App Store.TUAWWolfram Alpha lowers iPhone app price, will give refunds originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 01 Apr 2010 00:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

iPhone - Wolfram Alpha - AppStore - Unofficial Apple Weblog - AppleПереслать - Hulu coming to iPad... sometime, eventually
Filed under: iPad
No date, no forecast, but it's a work in progress: in a story about the profit prospects for Hulu, the New York Times mentions that four sources familiar with the site's plans say there is a Hulu app in the works. This was rumored back in February, but the expectation was that the app would launch with the iPad... doesn't look like it will, at this point.
The possibility mentioned is that the app will come along with some sort of subscription plan for television content, which would be both irksome to existing Hulu fans who love the (free) website, and potentially get a scornful eyebrow from the App Store poobahs for stealing fire from the iTunes television show business.
We've been hoping for a Hulu app for the iPhone for a long time, but there's no discussion of that in the current NYT story. Shame, too, as it was supposedly coming "within a few months" just about a year ago.

Uncle Walt has weighed in, and most of the other big tech pundits are starting to weigh in on the Apple iPad. The Chicago Sun Times columnist and Mac geek extraordinaire Andy Ihnatko has offered his input, not only in the first of what he says will be many posts about the device, but also in an interview on Leo Laporte's TWiT Live MacBreak Weekly.
As in Walt Mossberg's review, Andy comments that it can easily last 10 hours on a charge, it can hold just about any piece of media you ever want to carry with you, and that it does the "dull compulsories of computing (Mail, the web, and Microsoft Office-style apps) so well" that the iPad will, in many cases, take the place of a standard laptop computer.
Ihnatko, who has had the pleasure of playing with an iPad for the last week, gushes about Apple's innovation, saying "I'm suddenly wondering if any other company is as committed to invention as Apple. Has any other company ever demonstrated a restlessness to stray from the safe and proven, and actually invent things?"
The result? As he says, "The iPad user experience is instantly compelling and elegant... It's a computer that's designed for speed, mobility, and tactile interaction above all other considerations."
Ihnatko thinks that Apple got the design of the iPad right because "the excitement slips away after about ten seconds, and you're completely focused on the task at hand... In situation after situation, I find that the iPad is the best computer in my household and menagerie."
During his TWiT Live interview, he stated that "battery life is frickin' incredible." With the most aggressive use, he was able to get 6 - 7 hours of use, but when he set the device for more sedate battery usage (volume and brightness both turned down), he was able to get over 11 hours of use. For those of you who are used to getting your laptop scorched by a Macbook, you'll be glad to hear that the iPad never gets warm. Ihnatko was demonstrating web browsing on the device, and was amazed at how fast scrolling occurred.
We'll try to get Andy's TWiT Interview link up a bit later for your viewing pleasure.TUAWAndy Ihnatko: iPad is pure innovation, one of best computers ever originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 23:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Look out, Nintendo and Sony. Amazon, go cower in the corner with the Kindle. The iPad will be giving all of them a run for their money, Baig says. "At the very least, the iPad will likely drum up mass-market interest in tablet computing in ways that longtime tablet visionary and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates could only dream of," Baig points out. Ouch. Point to Steve Jobs.
Baig's review goes through a rundown of the iPad that we're all familiar with -- both its strong points and its faults. But, he points out the magnificent capabilities -- especially when it comes to things such as e-books as he describes the hands-on experience with one particular app that's more like an e-book:
"The iPad's splendor and power may be best shown by The Elements: A Visual Exploration. The $13.99 program is more electronic book than traditional app, but it's not like any e-book you've seen. The periodic table of elements comes to life when you touch your finger against any element. Handsome photographs of objects spin around so you can observe them from all vantage points."

If you feel that you're seeing double, and things are repeating on you, don't be alarmed. David Pogue's New York Times review of the iPad takes on the challenge of dual perceptions of the device -- savvy geeks who poo-poo it as "just a big iPod touch, and more expensive than a netbook" vs. everyone else who swoons "It's a big iPod touch! Awesome!" -- by delivering two separate reviews.
Pogue wraps with the following endorsement:
"[T]he techies are right about another thing: the iPad is not a laptop. It's not nearly as good for creating stuff. On the other hand, it's infinitely more convenient for consuming it - books, music, video, photos, Web, e-mail and so on. For most people, manipulating these digital materials directly by touching them is a completely new experience - and a deeply satisfying one."The bottom line is that the iPad has been designed and built by a bunch of perfectionists. If you like the concept, you'll love the machine.
"The only question is: Do you like the concept?"

Warning: This post contains spoilers about the latest episode of Modern Family. You have been warned.
One of my favorite TV shows, Modern Family, was all about the iPad tonight, just days before the big release. The main character, Phil Dunphy, is thrilled at the prospect of receiving an iPad for his birthday, which coincides with the device's release. Of course, the show is a sitcom -- so it doesn't go as smoothly as he hoped.
It certainly was real and not a prop. After singing the happy birthday song, Phil blew out the "candles" atop an animated cake on the iPad's screen. Perhaps ABC's corporate parent's biggest stockholder was able to pull one off the production line in time for the show's filming several weeks ago.
It sure was clever of Apple to have such thorough product placement on one of the season's most popular new shows. Filed under: iPad
Here we go, cats and kiddies. Walt Mossberg's had his iPad for a week now, and he's got to tell us all about it. Quotes below are transcribed from his video review.
"The question in my mind is just how important will this be... On one level I think this has the potential to challenge the laptop, it has the potential to, I think, even challenge the whole user interface we've had on computers and sort of set up a slow evolution towards multitouch and gesture and away from the mouse-driven interface.... That's it's potential. But it depends on whether -- not everyone, but enough people decide that they can carry this instead of a laptop or a netbook. That is, that it can do much of what they want to do on their netbook or a laptop most of the time... so that they can just pick this up and take it with them, or use it around the house, and not crack open that bulkier, heavier laptop. We don't know the answer to that.
"My own judgment, after a week of testing it, is that for a lot of people, it really will do the trick."
"I think Apple, all and all, has done a beautiful job with this thing.... This is a robust, general-purpose device. How did it perform as an e-reader? I thought it did very well; I enjoyed reading books on here more than I so on my Kindle, because of the size of the screen and the sharpness of the screen, and the fact that you get color illustrations -- and I'm a fan of the Kindle, but I would pick this." Uh, Amazon, you might want to do some reading...
You can see Walt's complete review over at All Things D and the WSJ, and his video below. Suffice it to say, he's enthusiastic, and so are we.

MobileMe has some great features, but Apple needs to stay on top of it to keep it competitive with other services. It's a bit pricey and hasn't changed all that much over the last couple of years, so new features are always worthy of notice.
Fortunately, Apple made one small step for mankind by releasing an update to the MobileMe Gallery app for the iPhone and iPod touch today.
Now it is easy to add your friends' MobileMe Galleries with just a couple of clicks on your touch screen. When you select "Add a Friend," the app will search your contact list and indicate which of your friends have MobileMe Galleries. Click on add from there, and it's done. Slick.
It's not a big deal, but it's a nice touch, especially for a service on which updates are sparse. iPhone - AppStore - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IpodTouchПереслать - Apple tweaking iPhone to work better on AT&T's network
Filed under: iPhone
Powerpage.org cites a Wall Street Journal article reporting that Apple has worked with AT&T to "rejigger" how the iPhone works with AT&T's towers, resulting in a reduced load for some tasks. It was not clear what changes were made, but apparently a "crash course in wireless technology" allowed them to figure out how the iPhone can get along better with AT&T.
Such news indicates the lengths that Apple is willing to go to in order to be a good partner with AT&T. While few people are singing AT&T's praises, apparently there is an effort within the company to improve the network in large cities to reduce the number of dropped calls. According to Powerpage, "A random performance test released in February found that AT&T's 3G network speeds had improved by 84%."
The problem is that AT&T's 3G speed has never been the main issue. AT&T is, and has been, very happy to compare themselves to Verizon when it comes to 3G speed. When it comes to reliability (i.e. how well you can actually use that speed) and availability, however, AT&T's 3G has consistently come up short.
Not to mention that whole tethering issue that AT&T hasn't mentioned in several months, despite having originally promised it would be available by the end of 2009.
If Apple is working on a CDMA/Verizon-compatible iPhone, AT&T's efforts are probably going to be too little, too late. After almost three years of consistently disappointing iPhone users with poor 3G availability, dropped calls, late availability of MMS, and even later availability of tethering (assuming it is ever available), iPhone owners have little reason to stay with the company.TUAWApple tweaking iPhone to work better on AT&T's network originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 19:30:00 EST. The menu bar is a quintessential piece of the Mac "experience." On the left, it shows all of the menu items for the currently active application; on the right, it shows icons from various menu bar application programs: the date/time, WiFi status, MobileMe sync status, and many, many more.
The whole idea is to make the menu items easy to find and easy to "hit" with a mouse, by being connected to the top of the screen (Fitts's law and all that). But what if you have two monitors? Suddenly the menu bar might be all the way over on the other side. Yes, I realize that complaining about using a Mac with two monitors might be the quintessential "first-world problem," but the more minor irritants you can remove from life, the better.

Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - Apple - Video - TelevisionПереслать - Apple's growing pains, culture of secrecy and the iPad
Filed under: Apple
On Saturday, when you plug in your shiny new iPad and peruse the App Store for apps, you'll see 'HD' or 'XL' designations for iPad-specific apps. You may wonder what that's all about.
It's about a lack of solid information, driven by a top-down policy of secrecy. When a company like Apple fosters a culture of anxiety amongst third-party associates and low-level employees, you're going to wind up with some bad decisions being made in the absence of clear policies.
Why would these apps be less feature-filled than devs would want? It comes down to this: Apple's rush to innovation has caused a vacuum of information for developers. Around this vacuum lies fear. It is a fear generated by Apple as a byproduct of the company's own paranoia, favoritism, and lack of empowerment for middle managers unable to "think different" and use common sense. Apple is a powerhouse of innovation because it can control things completely, but the other edge on that sword is its own fear of losing control. The machine lurches forward, but is it sustainable?TUAWApple's growing pains, culture of secrecy and the iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 16:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPad
Just five minutes ago I got a call from the Apple Store at the Walt Whitman Shopping Mall in Huntington Station Long Island, NY, confirming that I would be picking up my new iPad on Saturday. We agreed that it was for the 64GB Wi-Fi model.
I was told that pre-orders would only be available for pickup until 3 pm, and was asked when I expected to swing by and pick it up. 9 am sounded good to me and to the store rep.
Did anyone else get the same confirmation call?TUAWApple store calling to confirm iPad orders originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 15:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Although it's been relatively quiet in the mailbox over the past 48 hours with regard to Mac OS X 10.6.3 issues and outcomes (probably because everyone is too busy refreshing their delivery status), every OS update comes with a few problems. In this case, the reports we've gotten include the usual mix of stalls, slow reboots, and even one very unhappy graphics card.
Fortunately, the team at cnet's MacFixit site has a solid list of seven recommendations for managing a hung update process, including using the Combo updater and going to safe boot if necessary. If you have been having issues with the update and need a quick fix, run through their list and see if you can't get it working. Oh, and we'll add one more tip, just in case: be sure before you start that your backups are current. Good luck!TUAW10.6.3 update hiccups and workarounds originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 14:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Mac OS X - Operating system - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - Mac OSПереслать - Track an iPad from Shenzhen to you
Filed under: iPad
There's a fun post at Silicon Alley Insider today that traces an iPad's journey from China to the customer's home. By monitoring Twitter and tracking reports, Nick Saint has assembled an iPad's typical journey to the US.
It starts at the infamous Foxconn factory in Shenzhen, China. That's the "iPad nursery," if you will. From there, iPads destined for the USA fly to Anchorage, Alaska, a journey that Google Maps struggled with (38 days by car? Oh, it'd be much shorter by car).
Many TUAW readers wrote in to say they've received shipment notifications, so we can assume that your precious is somewhere along this route. In the meantime, why not install a package tracking app on your iPhone (you remember your iPhone, right)?TUAWTrack an iPad from Shenzhen to you originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 14:00:00 EST. iPhone - IPad - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - TwitterПереслать - Apple Store employees in the dark about iPad
Filed under: iPad
If you want to get an inside tidbit, or even a glimpse of an iPad, don't ask an Apple Store employee. They don't know any more than you do.
An article at Reuters describes the cloud of secrecy that continues to enshroud the device, even among its primary sales team. In interviews with anonymous employees (they're barred from speaking with the media), Reuters notes that none of them have seen an iPad, including store managers and Geniuses. "We haven't seen it; we never do," said one employee. Additionally, the Apple Store Geniuses haven't yet been briefed on how to repair iPads.
The moral of the story is, don't bother poking around the store and pestering the bright-shirted workers. There's nothing they can tell you.

iPhone - Apple - IPad - Unofficial Apple Weblog - ReutersПереслать - Greenpeace 'unappy' with iPad cloud
Filed under: iPad
Oh, Greenpeace. We thought you and Apple were buddies again. How fragile friendship can be.
The iPad's tenuous association with cloud computing has prompted the environmental group to criticize Apple for a carbon footprint that's "...much larger than previously estimated." The concern is that the proliferation of devices that make use of data centers requires ever larger facilities, most of which run on what Greenpeace calls "dirty coal power."
Apple has received both criticism and praise from Greenpeace before. For example, Greenpeace hit Apple with a mock Apple website a few years ago and had fig-leaf clad representatives visit the first Apple Store in continental Europe. Conversely, the group praised Apple's resignation from the US Chamber of Commerce over the group's resistance to limit greenhouse gasses last October.
The iPad isn't alone among Apple devices as a stand-in for the environmental flaws of the entire electronics industry and computing infrastructure. Mother Jones magazine, a standard-bearer for progressive causes, has posted a rather blunt "scary truth about your iPhone" page; the app buttons on the mocked-up iPhone 3GS reveal details like where the tin, tungsten and tantalum used in the device are sourced. It's a clever approach, but the iPhone's components and manufacturing process aren't markedly different from those of thousands of other cellphones; MoJo's use of the iPhone, like Greenpeace's targeting of the iPad, is as much about harnessing buzz as it is about raising awareness of environmental challenges.

iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - Apple - Apple StoreПереслать - First look: Air Harp turns iPad into instrument of the muses
Filed under: iPad
While there's no shortage of musical "instruments" for the iPhone, the relatively small size of its screen makes string instrument apps gaudy because you don't have the room to strum the strings appropriately. The iPad is going to change all that by allowing the app size needed to strum (virtually) to your hearts content.

Several years ago at Macworld Expo, I had the pleasure of meeting Saied Ghaffari, CEO of a small company called It's About Time Products, LLC. The company had created a training app which ran on the Mac and provided new iPhone users a chance to learn more about their devices, iTunes, and synchronization with the Mac. This application, called It's About Time: Learn the iPhone 3G, was followed by another training application called It's About Time: Learn the Switch. Learn the Switch was created to help Windows users make the migration to Mac OS X.
Well, with the iPad looming on the horizon, It's About Time started thinking about what kind of products to produce for the new platform. I talked with Saied Ghaffari yesterday about the new product from It's About Time, called mini apps, and how it will provide iPad users with an answer to one of the three most frequently requested features: multitasking. Read on for more information about mini apps.TUAWFirst Look: It's About Time brings widgets to the iPad with mini apps originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 10:30:00 EST. Apple has always said that the iPad will be available internationally in "late April." Now iPadinCanada has received the first hints of what the exact date may be. The site has been tipped by a source with ties to an Apple store that all Apple retail employees in Canada have been notified that the weekend of April 24th is a "black out period." A black out period means that no employees are allowed to request days off.
