- DIY coolness: a duct tape iPad sleeve and two clever docks
Filed under: iPad
Ahhhh, the refreshing ingenuity of TUAW readers!
Frank Hsueh might have been out of quid after buying his iPad, or he perhaps he just likes the texture of duct tape. As Frank noted in an email to TUAW this morning, he made an iPad sleeve out of nothing but a bubble envelope, duct tape, double-sided tape, and an Apple sticker from an iPod shuffle.
Frank used up his roll of double-sided tape securing the inner bubble padding, so he used the tape core to make an iPad stand. As Frank said, it's "perfect for movie watching or notes typing (with wireless keyboard) in landscape mode."
Another TUAW reader, Wilson Lam, had an even more green solution for an iPad stand -- while he's waiting for a stand from Quirky, Wilson found that a cardboard cup holder from a fast-food restaurant could be turned into a utilitarian iPad stand.
Check out the gallery below for more photographic evidence of these fun DIY projects.TUAWDIY coolness: a duct tape iPad sleeve and two clever docks originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 10 Apr 2010 15:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPad - Uniform Resource Locator - IPhoneПереслать - iPhone OS 4.0: Multitasking support hidden away for pre-3GS devices
Filed under: iPhone
After Thursday's iPhone OS 4.0 event, when asked why multitasking was being excluded on devices older than the iPhone 3GS, Apple said that the older devices just couldn't do it. However, that wasn't quite true. A developer, who's been messing around with the iPhone OS 4.0 preview, has found that by simply switching just one variable in preferences, multitasking can indeed be enabled on the iPhone 3G.
As far as we know, there won't be a flag in the final release version of the OS, but it looks like you can switch it on by tweaking one file on your own phone (which will require jailbreak). Of course, jailbreakers already have access to multitasking, and they'll be able to use Apple's official method as well, it seems.
Steve and Scott Forstall have a little explaining to do -- why were we told yesterday that all of the devices before the 3GS couldn't multitask? It's certainly possible that they don't do it well, or that they can't handle as many processes as the 3GS might be able to handle. Unfortunately, this looks like Apple is trying to force an upgrade rather than get the software right (as this NSFW blog post complains). It was even mentioned yesterday (from the Engadget liveblog): "If that's an incentive for them to upgrade to a new device... terrific."
We'd hope that Jobs and co. wouldn't purposely force a hardware upgrade, but it would be nice to to have some clarity about exactly what the problem with is multitasking on an older iPhone.TUAWiPhone OS 4.0: Multitasking support hidden away for pre-3GS devices originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sat, 10 Apr 2010 12:30:00 EST. IPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Operating system - Computer multitaskingПереслать - iPhone OS 4: Google branding removed in Safari search
Filed under: iPhone
iLounge has pointed out that the "Google" branded search button in mobile Safari has been renamed "Search" in iPhone OS 4. Is this a sign that Apple is about to dump Google from mobile search? Despite their increasing competition, it's highly unlikely that Apple will entirely eliminate Google from mobile Safari search. Google is still the world's number one search engine by a wide margin; eliminating it from Safari's search function would alienate a lot of users.
So what could the "Google"/"Search" switch mean? Most likely it's that iPhone OS 4 will have search engine options in addition to Google and Yahoo! (like Bing), and Apple wants to have a universal button that reads "search" no matter what engine the user chooses to use. Other possibilities could be that Apple and Google have not agreed on a financial arrangements for Google to be the default search in OS 4 yet and they want Google to know that they'll give default search to the highest bidder.
Of course, there's always another possibility: Apple is launching its own search engine. Sounds like a long shot? Maybe it is, then again who would have ever thought Apple would one day be in the mobile advertising market? Personally, I wouldn't hold my breath for Apple search this year. Apple does a lot of things better that Google (and other competitors), but when it comes to search, Google is still king.

Google - Safari - Bing - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPhoneПереслать - Dear Apple, you're half-way there
Filed under: iPhone
In January you told Apple what you wanted in iPhone OS 4.0. Did the development team heed your advice? Well, even though iPhone OS 4 is only in its first beta release, Apple has already added 50% of the major features you wanted.
What was delivered?
Vertical swiping, app switching, background VoIP/audio playback and enhanced abilities for apps to save state and return you to the point where you left off are available in iPhone OS 4 through the new multitasking features. App organization and overall device app capacity has been improved with the introduction of Folders. A new home screen has been implemented with background wallpapers and a new dock.
What got left out?
Flash (and it's never going to happen, so just forget about it), a new lock screen, support for more codecs, and disk mode are the obvious ones that didn't make the list. However, some of the smaller feature requests are still possible, since they would be relatively minor changes that would be easy to implement as the SDK beta continues to progress. The ability to lock the device to portrait or landscape could still be a feature we'll see, especially considering Apple has already implemented the feature on the iPad via a hardware switch.
It's also possible that Apple could allow users to remove or hide Apple-installed apps, though there are so far no hints of that in the SDK according to the devs we've spoken to; however, having Folders means that you can pile them all in one folder and forget about them. As for that universal documents folder, no signs of it yet, but Mail app's ability to select which apps should open attachments in iPhone OS 4 is a good start.
Now we wait and see if anyone listened to your hardware wants for the 4th gen iPhone.

iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPad - Operating systemПереслать - Breaking: Twitter acquires Tweetie, will make it official and free
Filed under: App Store
Twitter founder Evan Williams has posted on the official blog that the company will be buying Tweetie, an iPhone app currently available in the App Store, from creator Loren Brichter. The app will be renamed Twitter for iPhone and released in the App Store for free. Williams says that Twitter users have looked for an official app in the store and haven't found one, so he says that they hope to solve that problem by providing an official App Store location for Twitter.
Brichter will be joining the Twitter team, and he'll be working with them to eventually provide a Twitter for iPad app as well. More information on the deal (as well as that price change) is coming soon, though Williams didn't say when the iPad app might be released.
So, wow. A little shakeup in one of the biggest app genres on the iPhone. There's no word yet on what will happen to the Mac version of Tweetie, or any other plans Brichter might have for the App Store. Here's a statement from him. Stay tuned for more insight and analysis soon.TUAWBreaking: Twitter acquires Tweetie, will make it official and free originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 09 Apr 2010 21:32:00 EST. iPhone - App Store - Loren Brichter - Twitter - AppleПереслать - OpenFeint's Jason Citron talks Game Center and Aurora Feint 3
Filed under: Gaming
The first thought on everyone's minds as we heard during the event yesterday that Apple would be forming their own social gaming network on the iPhone called Game Center, was probably, "What about OpenFeint?" Since almost the very beginning of the App Store, OpenFeint founder Jason Citron has been working hard to provide developers with a free and easy solution for implementing a social network and social features on their iPhone apps, and with one small announcement, Apple appeared to make all of that work obsolete. Quite a few unofficial social networks have spawned on the iPhone (OpenFeint is one of the first and definitely the biggest, with over 12 million users at last count), and with one fell swoop, it appeared that Apple's new official network would make them all unnecessary.
Not so, Citron told us in a quick interview today. Yesterday, he confirmed in a statement that OpenFeint would still do their best to sit on top of any official network that Apple would build, and today he talked a little more with us about the future of OpenFeint, his worries about Game Center, and how the company's first iPad title, Aurora Feint 3, is doing.TUAWOpenFeint's Jason Citron talks Game Center and Aurora Feint 3 originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 09 Apr 2010 21:00:00 EST. iPhone - Jason Citron - Apple - OpenFeint - App StoreПереслать - Apple blocking Flash-built apps because of multitasking?
Following up on news that the iPhone 4.0 developer agreement prohibits cross-compiled third-party apps, AppleInsider received info that multitasking in iPhone OS 4.0 is the reason for the change. According to their sources, apps built in environments like Flash CS5 won't co-operate well with Apple's multitasking scheme. "The system will now be evaluating apps as they run in order to implement smart multitasking. It can't do this if apps are running within a runtime or are cross compiled with a foreign structure that doesn't behave identically to a native C/C++/Obj-C app," according to AppleInsider. "Apple needs full access to a properly-compiled app to do the pull off the tricks they are with this new OS," one of their readers said.
So it's not a grand conspiracy to kick Adobe while it's down, not about arbitrarily restricting developers to Apple's own programming tools, and not about squashing competition. If AppleInsider's sources are correct, banning apps built via Flash CS5 is really about ensuring that all apps run properly in Apple's new multitasking environment.TUAWApple blocking Flash-built apps because of multitasking? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 09 Apr 2010 20:00:00 EST. iPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Operating system - Computer multitaskingПереслать - AdLib: Apple's secret web app weapon
MobileCrunch noticed something interesting about the iPad User Guide hidden in the iPad Safari's bookmarks. It's a web app, but it doesn't feel like a web app -- the views scroll independently and smoothly, "clicking" is exact, and the whole thing runs much more like a native iPad app than anything web app developers have been able to put together yet. Why? Apple's got a secret -- Done21 is calling it "AdLib," after a file found somewhere in the source code, and apparently it's a library that connects UIKit to HTML, CSS, and Javascript. It's a go-between framework that has no documentation in the code at all, and uses practically unlabeled variables. In other words, Apple is putting their own magic into web apps, and while the code is there to see, they aren't interested in sharing.
At this point, it's not much more than a novelty -- Apple obviously is depending on Xcode and the iPhone OS SDK for developing iPad and iPhone applications, and there's no need for them to share the code magic that's making this happen. But it's interesting when you think of the original emphasis that Apple placed on web apps way back in the early iPhone days. If all of those web apps we had were as well-coded and responsive as this -- in other words, if they'd actually had ties into the UI -- then maybe web apps would have been just enough.TUAWAdLib: Apple's secret web app weapon originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 09 Apr 2010 19:30:00 EST. iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPad - SafariПереслать - AT&T announces expensive rebranding (sigh)
Stung by Verizon ads, and a slew of unhappy customers, AT&T is doing what most companies with image problems do:Fix their problems.Get a new logo. A new color scheme. New ads.
"All of our communications across all of these channels is 'Rethink Possible' and this integration of design," Esther Lee, AT&T's senior vice president for brand marketing and advertising, said in an interview with Advertising Age magazine. It's reported that AT&T, which is one of the country's five biggest advertisers, spent $1.87 billion on marketing and advertising last year.
The new company slogan, "Rethink Possible" is supposed to alert us that nothing is impossible if you are an AT&T customer. Right. I'm really enjoying that tethering. I guess "expanding the boundaries of 'can'" actually adds in a few values of "cannot."
One good outcome of all of this is that the Luke Wilson ads will be going away. AT&T still seems tight with Apple, but if the iPhone does wind up going to Verizon then things might rapidly change. I've really never understood these re-branding exercises. Me: "Hey Mary, I know you hate AT&T but they have a new logo now." Mary: "Great, I'm going to drop my Verizon plan today and hook up with AT&T. And the color changes? Breathtaking!"
You can get some samples of the new campaign at the AT&T website. I'm glad to hear how much AT&T is spending to upgrade its network. It still doesn't work in my house, but of course AT&T is quite happy to sell me a hardware doo-dad so that I can use my own internet bandwidth to get access to the AT&T network. Thanks for that one.
