- iBooks app now available in App Store
Apple has released the iBooks app into the App Store. The iBooks app will only run on the iPad and includes a complimentary copy of Winnie-the-Pooh by A. A. Milne. Some of the features of the app allows you to highlight your favorite passages with the built-in bookmarking feature, read a free sample of any book on the iBookstore, built-in search, and spoken word.

Apple - AppStore - IPad - IBookstore - iTunesПереслать - Letterman's iPad top ten list doesn't go quite according to plan
Filed under: iPad
Sure, David Letterman is rich, famous and apparently no slouch with the ladies... but he's not an iPad-savvy geek, as you can see here.
During tonight's Late Show, he brought out an iPad with the top ten list shown ("Top Ten Questions To Ask Yourself Before Waiting In Line For The iPad") -- then proceeded to turn the iPad upside down, get frustrated with his inability to wake it from sleep mode, accidentally try to power it down, lick it (!), then he simply went ahead and read from his paper card.
It's not clear how much of Letterman's frustration was feigned for comic effect, but it was a bit painful to see guest Sam Worthington place his coffee cup atop the iPad screen a few minutes later.
Meanwhile, over on basic cable, Stephen Colbert showed the world how it's done (as shown on Gawker). In addition to slicing veggies for a tangy salsa with his iPad, Colbert also got in a nice dig: "If you've already got an iPhone, a lot will be familiar to you on the iPad. The same touchscreen technology, the same apps... and just like the iPhone, you can't make calls with it." Oooh, burn.

The iFund has been one of the driving forces behind some of the biggest names in iPhone development, so it's not a surprise at all that the investors are expanding their money pool and oversight to include the iPad as well. They're opening up the funding to a full $200 million (double what the original iFund offered to iPhone companies), and they've already got a whole slate of apps lined up from big iPhone companies like Ngmoco, Booyah, and Shazam.
There will undoubtedly be a lot of successful apps on the iPad, but these are probably the biggest no brainers we'll see. It is important to note that these are all iPhone-specific companies. While there are lots of companies on the App Store that are doing iPhone as "just another platform" or have the iPhone as part of their overall strategy, the companies spotlighted by iFund all tend to be companies who are focusing on the iPhone (and now the iPad) as their business.
Just as the iFund likely paid off for their iPhone investments, odds are good that they'll see the same result on the iPad. We'll have to wait and see.TUAWiFund doubles to $200 million, supporting Ngmoco, Booyah, and others on the iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 01 Apr 2010 21:00:00 EST. Filed under: iTunes
Ever since Apple bought music-streaming service Lala, rumors of a cloud-based solution for iTunes have been floating around. And unfortunately, we don't have any official news on that yet (I know I'd use it -- I already share my library to all of my computers in-house anyway), but we do have more rumors. "Music industry sources" have informed CNET that there is a cloud service in the works, but that it's been delayed until the summer at least. There's no information about why, but apparently the delay came from Apple -- the company told music industry executives that the service wouldn't be ready until the third quarter of this year.
I'll wait -- having an iTunes service that could send my music library to any computer I own (or even my iPhone or iPad -- drool) would be awesome, but of course there must be lots and lots of technical and bandwidth issues to work out at least. So if you are expecting to see a cloud-based service from Apple in the future, you can at least stop frantically refreshing the iTunes page until sometime this summer.TUAWRumor: Cloud-based iTunes delayed until summer originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 01 Apr 2010 19:30:00 EST. Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPhone - Apple - IPad - iTunesПереслать - Find My iPad comes to MobileMe
Filed under: iPad
Find My iPhone, a long-standing feature on MobileMe that allows you to remotely locate a misplaced iPhone via MobileMe's web interface, has been extended to the iPad. Find My iPad has the same features as Find My iPhone, including playing the little sonar sound effect with an onscreen message (in case your iPad falls behind the couch or something). Find My iPad also includes the same Remote Wipe feature as Find My iPhone -- so if your iPad is irretrievably lost, you can remotely vaporize all the data on it, thus ensuring that thieves don't get access to your contacts, credit card info, or embarrassing lolcat pictures in addition to your iPad.
Apple notes that "The Find My iPad feature works best if your iPad includes both Wi-Fi and 3G, but it will also find your Wi-Fi-only iPad when it's connected to a wireless network." Translation: Find My iPad probably isn't going to work very well at all for the Wi-Fi-only models. It'll probably give you a very general idea of your iPad's location on Find My iPad's map, but without GPS capabilities, the Wi-Fi-only iPad will have nowhere near the specificity of the 3G-enabled iPad or iPhone.
Naturally, just like Find My iPhone, Find My iPad requires a $99/year subscription to MobileMe -- though if you're already using the service for your iPhone and/or Macs, there's no extra charge for the new iPad-specific services.

There's a lot of amazing stuff out there, but we'll try to focus you as best we can. Here's twenty apps that you won't want to miss in the App Store -- even if you don't buy them for iPad this weekend, you should at least check out the info and screenshots that are now available.

- Flight Control HD and Plants vs. Zombies HD are two of the most-awaited iPad games.
- Evernote has released their iPad app.
- MLB's At Bat 2010 has a new edition, so you'll unfortunately have to re-buy it on the iPad even if you've already bought it on the iPhone.
- Words with Friends HD and Fieldrunners for iPad are available right now.
- 2K Games has released Civilization Revolution on the iPad, the more accessible version of Sid Meier's classic turn-based strategy game.
- Here's the Comic Zeal comic reader app we covered earlier this week, and there's also an official Marvel comics app in the store.
- Twitterific for iPad is on the store and looking great.
- Aurora Feint 3 is the newest iPad version of one of the iPhone's biggest titles.
- CastleCraft is a new strategy freemium MMO from Freeverse and Ngmoco.
- StumbleUpon will allow you to browse the crowdsourced best of the Web from your couch.
- iMDb has released a full iPad app of their movie database.
- Minigore HD brings another big iPhone title to the bigger screen.
- StarWalk for iPad recreates the popular astronomy app and TUAW favorite.
- And Let's Golf! HD brings a quality handheld golfing experience to the "HD" screen.

As with all of the other approved iPad apps, the full slate of Electronic Arts' iPad titles are now ready to go in the App Store. Mirror's Edge, Tetris and Scrabble are ready for download, as is Command and Conquer: Red Alert and Need for Speed Shift. Those last two are probably the most interesting -- playing an RTS on a larger touchscreen is something that a lot of people have wanted to try for a long time, and Command and Conquer will probably be the biggest budget title of that genre available at launch.
Need for Speed Shift will probably be pretty predictable as an accelerometer racing game, but it is notable for the fact that it's selling at $14.99, significantly higher than even the other iPad titles we've seen so far. C&C and Mirror's Edge are both above $9.99, and Tetris is the only EA app to go below that point, at $7.99. So it looks like EA is starting out pretty aggressive on pricing for the iPad -- we'll have to see how sales go for them at those levels and what happens to those prices after launch.TUAWElectronic Arts stable now live on the iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 01 Apr 2010 18:15:00 EST. Filed under: iPad
We posted a short while ago that iPad apps are now in the App Store. An interesting feature we just discovered is that iTunes now splits your downloaded apps in the Apps library in the iTunes source list. Any iPhone app specifically optimized for the iPad is now segregated into its own category. In your iTunes App library you'll now see two headings: the top heading is "iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad Apps" with all the non-iPad optimized apps relegated to an "iPhone and iPod touch Apps" category.
An iPad-optimized app is an iPhone app that supports both the iPhone's and iPad's native resolution and thus doesn't need to use the iPad's 2x zoom feature to display the app full screen on the iPad. And while we haven't gotten a chance to sync up an iPad yet, we'll presume that iPad-only apps will have their own section as well.
Update: Apple is now featuring iPad apps on the App Store homepage in iTunes. Looks like the iPad App Store is officially live. Filed under: Gaming
iPad titles have started appearing on the App Store, and two big video gaming names are there with them. First up, Activision has apparently dropped a copy of the arcade shooter Geometry Wars out there in the form of Geometry Wars: Touch for iPad. Given that we haven't actually played the game yet, we're not sure how they work out the two-stick controls (generally in these games, you move with one stick and shoot with the other), but they are advertising a new game mode, called Titans. Looks fun -- it's a full US$10 app, which might be pricey without trying it, but the Geometry Wars series tends to offer up some fun and addictive arcade experiences.
And as predicted, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 is now out on the App Store. It is not an iPad title -- it's only for the iPhone and the iPod touch, but of course it should still run on the iPad in an upscaled mode. This is probably my favorite Tony Hawk game of all time, and while the touchscreen controls may be a little squishier than the old PlayStation buttons, the reviews are great so far. Earlier today, we asked you (via Twitter and @ask_tuaw) for your top inquiries about the product everyone's talking about. While we can't give you first-person photos and video -- yet -- we can give you an answer, straight from the lab and the lap, to the most popular question: Can you read iBooks in direct sunlight?
What does not look good in bright sun: video playback. The dark screen doesn't pump out quite enough candlepower to make TV shows or movies easily visible. However, that's a failing of most portable video devices, so you can't ding the iPad for it. Much.
As many have inquired, the screen does hold fingerprints and you can see them most annoyingly in the sun -- but the oleophobic coating means a quick sleeve swipe fixes that. Our question-answering squad wasn't in a situation to deal with iTunes and networking details, unfortunately, but we'll try to get more on that for you all soon.

One of the more popular genres of iPad app appearing close to launch time seems to be artistic or photography tools. The video above shows Foto Brush Pro from Bobby Software running on an iPad. The app has been available for iPhone and iPod touch under the name Photo Brush for quite some time, and is now expanding to fill the vast pixel space of the iPad.
The video shows how the app can be used to paint blank canvases or photos, add text, and otherwise enhance or create art. The bigger screen is definitely a benefit for this kind of app -- having a little extra room for tools and gestures helps a lot, we'd imagine. iPhone - Apple - App Store - IPad - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - First look: Rally Up, a social network for real friends
Filed under: Software
I have to admit it: I like location-based social networking apps. Probably my favorite to date has been FourSquare, which I love because I'm the "Mayor" of a couple dozen locations. But this type of app isn't for everyone. My wife, for example, says that she thinks they're a bit too much like stalking (to which I replied, "there's an app for that"), so she won't use them.
Rally Up is a new location-based social network (that's so awkward to say) that has several features that may sway my wife. The free app for iPhone, and soon for iPad, lets you set granular friend preferences. What does that marketing speak mean? Easy -- you set your real friends to "real" on a slider, which means that they get full notifications (i.e., "Steve is at the Blue Bonnet Café) and their check-ins show up in your feed.
The next slider setting is "feed," which is for those folks who you want to know about, but you don't want to receive push notifications from. Next on the slider? "Lurker." Here, you can see what's happening with a friend, but you don't let them see what you're up to. And finally, there's "mute." What do you use mute for? It's for all of those people who you started following because of social pressure, but who you really don't want to follow.TUAWFirst look: Rally Up, a social network for real friends originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 01 Apr 2010 15:15:00 EST. AppStore - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - Apple - iTunesПереслать - Some Apple Specialist locations will have iPads
Filed under: iPad
A few days ago, we listed three ways you can score an iPad on Saturday if you didn't reserve one. Namely, see if your local Best Buy will have any (just 15 per store, and not every store), hang around an Apple Store and count on a no-show, or buy one from a customer on launch day. Now we can add a fourth: check your local Apple Specialist location.
According to AppleInsider, several Apple Specialist locations will be selling iPads, though exactly which ones is a mystery. The resellers are supposedly under a non-disclosure agreement, preventing them from advertising the iPads before the official release.
So, what's a geek in need to do? Give your local shop a call and see what they say (though the NDA might prevent them from speaking the truth). If you're "in" with staff, you might get a confirmation in a "between you, me and the lamp post" kind of way.
In any case, good luck! Though we suspect you'll be waiting until April 12th at this point.TUAWSome Apple Specialist locations will have iPads originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 01 Apr 2010 14:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - Weather Underground - IPhone - AppleПереслать - Steve Jobs on Time magazine cover again
Filed under: iPad
There's a super article in the current issue of Time magazine featuring Stephen Fry's interview with Steve Jobs. As you may know, Stephen Fry is a writer, actor and comedian. He was also the 2nd person in all of Britain to own a Macintosh (author Douglas Adams was the first). That's precisely why this interview is such a joy to read -- Fry is a total fanboy (his tremendous skills as a writer don't hurt, either).
"I have met five British Prime Ministers, two American Presidents, Nelson Mandela, Michael Jackson and the Queen. My hour with Steve Jobs certainly made me more nervous than any of those encounters."
Fry asks Jobs, who resurrected Apple with the iMac's introduction in 1998, if he'd use the iPad's successful release (should that happen) as an opportunity to step down on top; to end his career on a high. Jobs responded as one might expect:
"I don't think of my life as a career," he says. "I do stuff. I respond to stuff. That's not a career - it's a life!"
In addition to talking with Jobs, Fry met with Phil Schiller (Apple's senior VP of worldwide product marketing) and Eddy Cue (Apple's VP of Internet services) who showed off the iBooks application. At last, Stephen got some time to use an iPad which he instantly fell in love with. You can watch him unbox his own iPad here.
As you pour over the media's reaction to the iPad this weekend, don't miss this article. It was a pleasure to read. Steve Jobs - Apple - IPad - iMac - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Mail Notifier subscription service for the iPhone
Filed under: App Store
When Apple introduced ActiveSync and Push email support for iPhone email, there were two reactions: 1) "Yay!" and 2) "What's this going to mean for battery life?" Any sort of "push" technology will reduce the battery life, but it is a trade-off many people are willing to make, especially when it comes to email.
Mail Notifier is one of several applications in the App Store designed to avoid the battery drain of keeping an active connection to your mail server. I've been using it for a couple of months and it has worked very well with my Gmail (actually, "Google Apps") account. In fact, there have been times when I was sitting at my computer and my iPhone told me I had mail even before I saw it in Mailplane. Does it actually save on battery life? That's a difficult question to answer without doing tests in a controlled environment, but anecdotally and unscientifically I would say that it does seem to have improved my battery life.
One of the nice features that Mail Notifier offers is the ability to set a "silent period" when you won't be disturbed by alerts. This is something that I wish Apple would provide globally, i.e. "Disable all push notifications between 11pm-8am" or each push application would implement individually, e.g. "If it is my move in Words With Friends during the day, play a sound and display an alert, but if it's my move between 11pm and 8am, just display an alert, but keep quiet. I might be sleeping."
Mail Notifier is also said to work with free Hotmail accounts and AOL, although I did not test either of those. If you use webmail instead of Mail, you can setup Mail Notifier to open a web page instead of the Mail app. You can also setup different sounds for different accounts. That is a handy function if you have more than one mail account, or if you have a "multiple iPhone household" and want to avoid the "Which one of us just got an email?" confusion.
Overall, the app has worked very well, and as advertised. However, there is some "small print" to attend to. I was surprised to see a large number of 1-star reviews on the Mail Notifier iTunes/App Store page. Then, I noticed a list of "top in-app purchases" for Mail Notifier. As I scrolled down to read the comments, I found that most of the 1-star reviews seemed to be about the fact that Mail Notifier is actually a subscription service, rather than just a one-time purchase. This came as a surprise to me. I was provided with a review code (see note below) that must have included at least 1 year of service, since I have not seen any renewal notices in the app. I did some looking around to see just how obvious this would be to a new user who happened to be browsing the App Store.
My conclusion is that it really depends on whether you came in through iTunes on a Mac or Windows computer, or whether you used the App Store on an iPhone or iPod touch.

Amazon has submitted to pressure from the major book publishers ahead of the iPad's Saturday launch. HarperCollins and Simon & Schuster will now, like Macmillan, be allowed to use an agency model that gives them control over their book's prices. "Our digital future is more assured today than it was two months ago," HarperCollins CEO Brian Murray told the Wall Street Journal.
At the iPad unveiling, Steve Jobs told Walt Mossberg that "publishers are actually withholding books from Amazon because they're not happy" and that "the prices [on the Kindle and iBookstore] will be the same." What he didn't clarify at the time was whether ebooks on Apple's iBookstore would cost what they do on the Kindle or vice versa. Now we know.TUAWAmazon caves to book publishers originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 01 Apr 2010 11:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Simon & Schuster - Steve Jobs - HarperCollins - Apple - SonyПереслать - Happy 34th birthday, Apple!
It's hard to believe, but Apple has been around for 34 years today. On April 1, 1976, Apple Computer, Inc. was founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak.
The company had an amazing childhood (Apple II, Mac), an awkward adolescence where it nearly killed itself with a broad, unfocused product line (Performa, Quadra, Newton), and then finally straightened itself out after reaching true adulthood in the late 90s and early 2000s (iMac, iPod).
Apple now has a nice family (iPod, iMac, MacBook, Mac Pro, Mac mini, iPhone, and the awkward kid Apple TV) and another child on the way -- iPad. It's been able to become one of the most prosperous companies in the United States in the midst of a recession, and shows all signs of being able to survive into middle age.

This is a pretty exhaustive video (it runs over nine minutes) and showcases pretty much every storm-related feature you might imagine, all presented using the iPad's extended screen space. We haven't heard anything about a price yet, but it looks like storm trackers will have software to run on the iPad right away.TUAWFirst Look: Hurricane HD for iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 01 Apr 2010 11:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPad
Many iPad owners will use their devices to watch television shows and movies. Netflix and ABC want to make that easy with their official iPad apps. And no, this is not an April Fools prank.
US television network ABC is also offering an app. This free app gives customers Wi-Fi access to some of their most popular shows, like Lost and Grey's Anatomy. You can even browse the network's weekly and monthly schedule to find just the show you're after.
We've been expecting Netflix to offer something for a while, and the ABC app isn't entirely unexpected either, as the network 's corporate parent's biggest stockholder is someone we all know.
Now if only Hulu would pull the trigger.

Television - IPad - Netflix - ABC - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Gmail enables OAuth, Syphir for iPhone already using it
Filed under: iPhone
Google has introduced OAuth authorization for Gmail, meaning that approved applications can access your Gmail account without you giving them access to your Gmail username and password.
OAuth has been used as Flickr and Twitter for some time, but is a new development for Google.
Previously, if you wanted to get push notifications on your iPhone when you received a message at Gmail, you had two options: trust a third-party application with your username and password, or automatically forward a copy of all of your email to a different email address and trust that they would not save a copy of your email. As you can imagine, neither of those made security-conscious users very comfortable.
There is already an iPhone app available which uses OAuth, SmartPush ($2.99) by Syphir promises to give you finer control over notifications from Gmail on your iPhone. We hope to have a review of SmartPush here on TUAW in the near future, so stay tuned for that.

The second feature makes a lot of sense, considering the power of the Canon-designed camera on the device. It's an SD card slot, which means that photos and videos captured with the camera can now be easily transferred to other devices via inexpensive and commonly-available SD cards.
In the documents, there are also details of other members of the iPad "Most Wanted List" that appear to have made it to the shipping. In particular, Flash has been added as well. That's right -- Flash can be seen in one of the photos. Filed under: Apple
The great prognosticator Gene Munster (who spends his days working as an analyst at Piper Jaffray) has another guess at Apple's future for us: a search engine. He says there's a 70% chance that Apple will create its own search engine within the next five years -- right after that HDTV that he predicted a little while back.
Obviously, putting together a search engine is a big undertaking, and once again, it seems unlikely that Apple would want to put one little toe into such a crowded pool. However, Munster's got that covered; he says that, instead of building from scratch, Apple might use some of its huge pool of cash to buy an existing database like Cuil.
While that seems unlikely as well, it does make a little bit of sense. If Apple and Google really are on the rocks (sit-down between Jobs and Schmidt notwithstanding), Apple is probably looking at strategies to extricate itself from Google's search grip.TUAWMunster: Apple developing a search engine originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 01 Apr 2010 09:30:00 EST.
