IPad - Jimmy Fallon - NBC - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IBooksПереслать - The four groups who will make the iPad huge
Filed under: iPad
I've yet to use an iPad, but I've been thinking about how it will be received. In my mind, there are four groups that will make the iPad a huge hit: Mobile professionals, typical computer users, students and developers.
Mobile professionals
The first two groups -- mobile professionals and typical users -- will use the iPad as a laptop replacement. I think about the work that I do. Honestly, I only need my laptop when I'm writing posts. For the past few years, I've been successfully using my iPhone as a laptop replacement. Forget that it's even a phone for a minute. I'm able to communicate with my co-workers easily and rapidly via email, Twitter, text and instant message. Basically, everything I must do for work (save posting) can be accomplished with the iPhone.
The iPad will fill that role even more successfully as blogging becomes possible. Plus it's got additional screen size, battery life and connectivity. I think that many people will find that to be the case. Which brings me to group number two.
Typical computer users
Consider what the typical user does with his/her computer -- email, Internet browsing, photos, video (TV and movies). I don't mean the geeks like you and me, I mean our parents, sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles. Joe Shmoe. For these folks, an iPad is perfect. Most folks don't do involved photo editing with software like Photoshop, video editing, coding, etc. With the iPad, Apple has demonstrated that you needn't spend $1,000 for a portable computer. A portable computer, mind you, with 10 hours of battery life, extreme portability and dead-simple operation.
I see iPads resting on coffee tables next to the remote controls, just another leisure device ready for use. For many, the iPad will be their primary or only computer. And they'll love it.TUAWThe four groups who will make the iPad huge originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 02 Apr 2010 23:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

OK, it's not all that surprising that the streaming movie & DVD shipper would plan an iPhone app to go along with the now-only-hours-away iPad version... but tonight's blog post on the Official Netflix Blog is downright cheeky.
To quote Steve Swasey, VP of Corporate Communications: "For those of you asking whether Netflix will be on the iPhone and iPod touch: We wouldn't invite you to dinner without planning to serve dessert. In other words, we're working on it so stay tuned."
There you go.

iPhone - IPad - Unofficial Apple Weblog - AppStore - AppleПереслать - Why I will buy an iPad, and think you should too
Filed under: iPad
Cory Doctorow doesn't like the iPad because it is laden with DRM. In other news today: water is still wet.
Joel Johnson and John Gruber already took apart one aspect of Cory's argument, the kid tinkering/creating with his new computer.
I'm going to focus on another part of it: my mom.
Last year my mom called me and wanted to buy a new laptop. Her old e-Machine, which I had routinely patched, updated, and kept going as long as I could, would no longer work.
She saw a US$400 laptop in the Sunday paper and asked me what I thought about it. I told her that she would be much better off spending more and getting a refurbished MacBook. She bought the $400 laptop anyway.
When I asked her why, she said that someone at work told her she couldn't take home files from work if she had a Mac. When I asked her what kind of files, she said "Oh, mostly Word and Excel." She was surprised when I told her that not only was there a version of Office for Mac, but it was actually newer than the Windows version.

Apple - Cory Doctorow - IPad - Microsoft Office - MicrosoftПереслать - Low-tech testing on a high-tech iPad
Filed under: iPad
Here's a little levity on the eve of the iPad launch chaos tomorrow. We're going through release after release today of all of these iPad apps, and after browsing page after page after page in the App Store, it's sometimes easy to forget just how much work went into each one of these things. The Omni Group has a nice writeup on their blog about how they designed the OmniGraphSketcher app, and while the iPad will be the center of attention tomorrow for its blend of technology and innovation, the Omni app was actually designed in a very low-tech way: with paper.
They designed a same-size iPad mockup and cut out a bunch of paper menus and interfaces, and then did their testing with them that way, going with instinct on what goes where and how it all worked out. The iPad is an innovative device, to be sure, but the reason it's so innovative is because you can model it easily with much older technology like paper. Developers don't cut out a paper mouse and keyboard to design their desktop apps, but with the iPad, the interface has to be re-designed completely, and so cutting out colored paper is just as effective as testing out code. Very interesting, and something to keep in mind as we all touch and poke and prod our new devices tomorrow.

AppStore - IPad - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Omni GroupПереслать - Apple thinking about game controller, headset
Filed under: Apple
We've mentioned the idea of an external game controller on the iPhone (and now, the iPad) before, but this is the first we've heard of Apple working on one themselves. Apparently a new patent would cover applying buttons, joysticks, or direction pads to an external controller, something that would either plug in to the dock port or be included in a shell-like object that the device could slide into. This is very similar to the unofficial iControlPad that we've seen, but it would be designed by Apple. Apple is also working on some sort of head-mounted display system, and it's possible that these two things could be used in conjunction -- the buttons would provide tactile feedback, while the headset would bring in immersive audio and video.
This is all far in the future, and just because Apple nails down a patent on something doesn't mean it will ever be released to the public. As we all know, Steve loves the iPad and the iPhone because there is only one button, and it would likely take a lot of convincing, even for the game market, to get him to add more.
Still, games are getting more and more complex on the iPhone and the iPad, and sooner or later, buttons may come in handy for selling those games. Apple may not be working on an actual console, but they may be working to make their current hardware more accessible for traditional gamers.TUAWApple thinking about game controller, headset originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 02 Apr 2010 21:00:00 EST. iPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - iControlPadПереслать - Flight Control HD live on the iPad
Filed under: iPad
If there's a breakout game for the iPad already, it's probably Flight Control HD -- the game was announced a while ago (we talked about it with Firemint back at GDC), but the title has stayed in the top 10 pretty consistently since the iPad's App Store went live yesterday. Firemint has finally dropped the embargo on the title this morning, and you can see the game above -- it's basically the same game as the iPhone version, except bigger, clearer, and with a little more space for the plane-landing chaos. That allows for a few new gameplay variations, including co-op multiplayer on the same iPad, a split-screen versus mode, new bigger airfields (and a Snow airfield with variable wind direction), and one more interesting little feature: 3D.
Yes, Flight Control HD has an anaglyphic image effect going on with one of the airfields. You'll have to procure your own red/cyan 3D glasses, but when you choose that map with glasses on, you'll be able to see planes flying around in full depth illusion. We haven't been able to play the mode yet, but Firemint did sent out some groovy glasses, so we can be ready when the iPad shows up.
Flight Control HD is live in the App Store right now, and on everyone's iPad this weekend. As launch hits go, Apple's doing pretty well with Firemint's iPhone classic.TUAWFlight Control HD live on the iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 02 Apr 2010 20:30:00 EST. The Kindle app for iPad has hit the app store. Kindle for iPad is a universal app -- the same app works on the iPhone or iPad. Almost two weeks ago, Amazon first previewed the Kindle iPad app. The app has many of the same visual motifs as the iBooks app that was released yesterday including visual page swipes and book cover navigation view.
A bit of eye candy that's unique to the Kindle app is that the sky behind the figure beneath the tree iconography will change according to what time of day it is.
Note that books bought through the Kindle for iPad app must be read within the app itself and will not be viewable in Apple's iBooks app, nor will they show up in the Books library in iTunes' source list.

iPhone - Apple - IPad - IBooks - AppStoreПереслать - 1Password for iPad will be free upgrade from iPhone version
Filed under: iPad
Agile Web Solutions, the company behind 1Password, has laid out what I have seen as the most sensible model so far for pricing on iPad apps. They announced on their blog how the new apps will work: They are selling 1Password for iPad for $6.99 and it is aimed at people who do not and will not own the iPhone/iPod touch versions. This version will be all iPad, all the time.
If you have an iPad and an iPhone/iPod touch, you can pick up 1Password Pro right now for $8.99 (it's on sale right now, the price will eventually go up to $14.99) and later on, this version will also include other features that won't make it to the standard version (one in particular they mention is MobileMe syncing).
I'm happy to read anything about iPhone and iPad app development, and I like hearing that someone has given thought to, and made allowances for, both types of iPad users (those who own an iPhone or iPod touch, and those who don't). I also like their transparency in letting people know how the upgrade path will go.
I'm still wondering about pricing in the App Store for iPad apps, and how peacefully all of this will end up coexisting. There's nothing to do but wait and see how things actually shake out with real users and actual app purchases, but I'm hoping there's more thoughtful examination and graceful upgrading out there. Knowing that consumers can be, shall we say, less than kind about things like pricing and upgrades, I'm hoping Agile will get credit for having spent some time on making this easier on people.TUAW1Password for iPad will be free upgrade from iPhone version originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 02 Apr 2010 19:30:00 EST. AppStore - iPhone - IPad - Apple - Unofficial Apple WeblogПереслать - Apple, Inc. market cap now exceeds Walmart
Filed under: Apple Financial
Apple and Walmart have been playing stock market tag over the past few weeks to see which company's market capitalization would be higher. At the time of this writing, Apple's market capitalization of $213.98 billion exceeds Walmart's market cap of $211.14 billion -- a difference of $2.84 billion. Currently, Microsoft and Exxon are the only US companies whose market caps exceed Apple's, with Microsoft at $255.75 billion and Exxon at $319.21 billion.
The overly simplified way of looking at it: Apple as a company is now worth more than Walmart, the world's largest retailer. Granted, market cap is only one way of gauging a company's financial worth, but considering the pile of cash Apple is sitting on right now, it doesn't seem like a huge stretch to say that Apple's economic worth is at least very closely represented by its position in the market cap rankings.
Some firms are predicting that Apple will eventually catch up to or surpass Microsoft's market cap. While there's currently a $41.77 billion dollar difference between the two companies' market caps, that's not a completely insurmountable gap. Get a load of this batch of perspective: ten years ago, Microsoft was worth in excess of $586 billion, while Apple was worth a relatively paltry $17 billion. In the same amount of time it took for Microsoft to lose almost $330 billion in worth, Apple's market cap rose by nearly $200 billion. No wonder Fortune named Steve Jobs "CEO of the Decade."TUAWApple, Inc. market cap now exceeds Walmart originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 02 Apr 2010 19:00:00 EST. Filed under: Blast From the Past
TV shows and movies often reflect the prevailing pop cultural themes of their day and age. One fixture from the eighties and early nineties was the boombox. Like big hair, Members Only jackets, and women wearing shoulder pad-laden tops, boomboxes were seemingly everywhere during that era. You'd be hard pressed not to find a boombox adorned on one's shoulder or booming away on a playground in many urban cities.
Much like how Sony passed the Walkman/Discman torch to the iPod, boomboxes have given way to iPod docks. On this eve launch of the potentially revolutionary iPad, which could displace books and magazines, let's take a stroll through memory lane and look at some flicks that may not be as relevant if made in today's technological age.
Long before he made Jerry Maguire, Vanilla Sky and Almost Famous, Cameron Crowe wrote and directed Say Anything. After getting dumped by Ms. pretty-, class valedictorian- and has everything going for her- Diane Court, Lloyd Dobbler sets out to prove that he's a "man" in a world "full of guys." In an effort to win back Diane's heart, Lloyd parks his car outside her house, whips out and perches his boombox above his head and plays Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes." Imagine this pivotal scene being played out with, say, an iHome. Definitely not as sexy.

If you frequent Wikipedia -- and appreciate an interface that's both beautiful and highly functional -- Articles is an iPhone (and iPad) app you should try. Going beyond just being a wrapper for the less-than-beautiful compendium of user-generated knowledge, it offers a very pleasing way to navigate the tomes.
In addition to normal browsing, Articles offers integrated maps and uses geolocation to offer items of interest around you, or around any location you specify. It also has support for multiple pages, a la Mobile Safari, so you can follow multiple lines of research without losing your place. Automatic spelling suggestions help you locate your information, and an integrated chapter browser helps you navigate. You can bookmark pages, and organize bookmarks in folders, as well as search your history by day. Recently-viewed articles are even available offline.
I haven't played with every Wikipedia app out there, and I've heard some great things about others like Wikipanion. Within my experience, though, Articles is a very complete solution and definitely worth a look. Articles is available for both iPhone ($2.99US) and iPad ($4.99US). I've only had the opportunity to play with the iPhone version, which is beautiful, but I'm really looking forward to trying it on the iPad, where its gorgeous interface and fluid usability will really have a chance to shine.

Well, we're at your service, Cody! And hopefully, these ideas will keep hundreds of thousands of iPad owners-to-be from suffering from terminal boredom in the early morning hours in line. Do live streaming video the entire time you're in line. TUAW bloggers will be giving you live coverage of iPad Saturday at a number of locations across the country, but there's just not going to be enough local coverage everywhere. The narrative tells the story of a man who just missed his train to work. He uses his iPhone to check the next train time then gets a phone call from a colleague at the office. While speaking to the colleague he uses a remote login app to access a file on his work computer and emails it to his office. This part of the ad spotlights the iPhone's ability to use data and voice simultaneously. The ad ends by the user watching news footage on his iPhone.
The three apps used in this ad are Here, File File! ($9.99), MassTransit ($3.99), and WSJ - The Wall Street Journal (Free).TUAWApple releases new iPhone ad "Commute" originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 02 Apr 2010 10:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

I started watching this video on YouTube and, within seconds, my son was almost magically drawn into my office, staring transfixed at the screen. "This is air hockey?" he asked. "Yes," I replied. "I want it," he said. "It looks fun." My enthusiasm is slightly more tempered, but I think that this is a brilliant choice for an iPad game.
According to Bryan Duke of Acceleroto, Air Hockey will sell for $0.99 on the iTunes Store. There's a free "Gold" version as well.TUAWFirst Look: Air Hockey for iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 02 Apr 2010 09:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
