- Round two: Engadget's mystery phone travels into the past
Busy Sunday. Despite earlier reports that the supposed next-gen iPhone prototype was actually a Japanese knockoff phone, the eagle-eyed team at Engadget hasn't given up the chase. The latest development highlights a second device in some of the blurry spy shots from back in January that turned out to be testing shots of the in-progress iPad, and if you look at it just right... it looks quite a bit like the found phone.
Despite the blocky look of the device and the stranger-than-strange circumstances surrounding its discovery, Engadget is now saying it has a source to back up the conclusion that this is the expected design for the next iPhone.TUAWRound two: Engadget's mystery phone travels into the past originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 18 Apr 2010 17:15:00 EST. IPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPad - EngadgetПереслать - Taking a stand on iPad stands
Filed under: iPad
I love the iPad. I really do. Getting a good iPad stand, however, can be a daunting proposition. There are a lot of varieties, things you can buy, things you can convert. It's pretty clear to me that for a lot of iPad use, a stand is mandatory.
I don't think the iPad is a one-hander. It gets heavy, and eventually I want to put it down. If I lay it flat, it's hard to type on, because the curved back (what were they thinking?) makes it wobble if you touch it. So here's a report on what I have found:the good, the bad, and the ugly.
First, a Seattle company called Padded Spaces sent me their product called Prop it Up. It's a bit large, and I think it might have been originally designed for laptops and netbooks. It is wide enough for a MacBook Pro.
You put your iPad on the plush, wedge shaped base, and you can adjust the angle from very low to about 80 degrees. The iPad stays in place, and I enjoyed using it. It is a bit large to be hauling around outside the house. The company makes a model that also functions as a case, so you pop the iPad inside for travel.
Of all the things I tried, this was the nicest iPad stand for around the house, but I felt like I should have one for several rooms, rather than move the thing around. I think if this product was made to fit the width of the iPad and generally reduced in all dimensions it would be a perfect solution. Prop it Up is US$39.95 or $49.95 with the integrated carrying case.

IPad - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - MacBook - NetbookПереслать - Rising iSun: Thoughts on the iPad's prospects in Japan
Filed under: iPad
Today's guest post is by Peter Payne, a longtime watcher of Apple's prospects in the Japanese markets. Peter is the proprietor of the Japanese pop-culture web shop jlist.com (some content NSFW).
Apple's new iPad has gotten off to a great start and managed to impress a lot of reviewers, which is quite an achievement if you think back to the negative press that was being written about it immediately after Steve Jobs announced it in January. By all accounts, it seems to be a wonderful invention; perhaps it's the perfect "throw this in your bag for a weekend in Vegas" computer. Still, how the device will be received outside of the U.S. remains to be seen.
Take Japan, a country that I've lived in for nearly two decades. When the iPhone 3G was introduced two years ago, it got off to an extremely slow start. The shape and functionality were just too different for the Japanese, who prefer clamshell phones with physical numeric keypads. Due to an odd linguistic quirk of the Japanese language, it's actually faster to enter Japanese hiragana-based text using a numeric keypad than with a QWERTY keyboard, and -- I am not kidding here -- many best-selling novels are actually written using keitai denwa (mobile phones) with numeric keypads.
However, as time went by, a core of dedicated Japanese iPhone fans emerged and helped evangelize the device, mainly by showing their friends all of the newest apps that they'd downloaded, and the iPhone started to catch on in a big way. Even the popular boy band SMAP quit their contract sponsoring NTT Docomo's phones and signed on with Softbank, presumably so that they could help promote the iPhone. These days, though, iPhone's share of the smartphone market tops 46 percent, and attending one of Danny Choo's media events for hipster blogger types is like a miniature iPhone convention.
How about the revolutionary iPad, though? Will Japanese fans go for this new device? I have some experience with Apple and the Japan iTunes store -- on my site, we sell the prepaid cards that let people around the world access iTMS Japan's content -- so I'll look into my crystal ball and see what's in store for iPad.

iPhone - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Steve Jobs - IPadПереслать - Tonight on the Talkcast: Fake or real? Engadget's 'iPhone HD' find
Filed under: TUAW Business
Many of you may be wondering "Where's the TUAW post about this phone from the bar that Engadget is talking about? Is it the next iPhone? Huh?" Well, the answer is simple: as much as we love our Engadget pals, and as much as we respect their enthusiasm for all things Apple, we were pretty sure it was fake, so we didn't post it.
Now it turns out that Spanish site AppleSfera has found the mystery phone, and it's a Japanese iPhone knockoff (translated post here). Thanks to Aaron Hirst and Bradley Petrik for tracking down the link. The excitement was palpable for a second there, but next time a strange phone gets found in a San Jose bar, let's all take a breath or two, shall we?
Update: Engadget has posted new pictures that add some confidence to the prototype's bona fides.
Meanwhile, we have finally got a week with news other than the iPad onslaught. New MacBook Pro models have hit the shelves, and if you happened to pick up one of the new machines, we'd love to hear from you tonight on the talkcast. We'll also be running down the latest episode of "Emails from Steve," our new favorite soap opera, and talking about the odd case of iPads banned from Israel.
To participate on TalkShoe, you can use the browser-only client, the embedded Facebook app, or the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the "TalkShoe Web" button on our profile page at 10 pm Sunday. To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (take advantage of your free cellphone weekend minutes if you like): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *8.
If you've got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac, you can connect via the free Gizmo or X-Lite SIP clients; basic instructions are here. Talk with you then!

Apple - TalkShoe - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Facebook - IPhoneПереслать - iPhly app lets you control an RC airplane with your iPhone
Filed under: iPhone
Ari Krupnik is developing an iPhone app called iPhly that interfaces with any standard DSM2 radio control module, allowing you to control an RC airplane or helicopter with your iPhone. As you can see in the video above, you hard-wire your iPhone to the DSM2 module and then launch the iPhly app. The app allows your iPhone and module to talk to each other, thus controlling your RC plane. The iPhone's accelerometers control the pitch and roll, while the touch screen controls the throttle and rudder. While iPhly isn't in the App Store yet, Ari hopes to see it there soon and is currently looking for beta testers.
This isn't the first time we've seen the iPhone used as a remote control. As we showed you earlier this year, a company called Parrot unveiled the AR.Drone at CES. The AR.Drone is a sexier version of iPhly because there's no module you need to strap on to your iPhone to use it with. You simply use the iPhone's built-in WiFi to control the AR.Drone's quadricopter -- and try not to decapitate TUAW bloggers in the process.
Yeah, those kites I used to get when I was a child seem pretty lame now.TUAWiPhly app lets you control an RC airplane with your iPhone originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 18 Apr 2010 10:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

iPhone - App Store - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - Radio controlПереслать - iPhone OS 4.0b1 jailbreak available -- for devs only
Filed under: Jailbreak/pwnage
The fine folks behind redsn0w have released the second beta of a jailbroken iPhone OS 4 -- redsn0w 0.9.5b2. Right now the beta only works on the iPhone 3G and does not support carrier unlocking. The devs are quick to point out that in no way is this jailbreak targeted at the average end-user.
Many jailbroken apps are currently broken in the iPhone OS 4.0beta1 environment and this redsn0w release is intended to help get their jailbroken apps up to working order in the new iPhone OS. For those hoping to get iPhone OS 4 on their iPads early, the devs of redsn0w politely point out that this jailbreak is not applicable to the iPad -- sorry iPad owners!TUAWiPhone OS 4.0b1 jailbreak available -- for devs only originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 18 Apr 2010 09:00:00 EST. Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - IPad - IPhone - AppStoreПереслать - Look out, Flava Flav: iPad as fashion statement
Filed under: Odds and ends, iPad
"Flava Flav just got outdone!" TUAW reader Paul Stamatiou told us, and I think he's right. It's one thing to wear a clock around your neck as a fashion statement, but walking around a mall wearing an iPad that's playing a music video? How do you top that? You just can't.
This guy (who turns out to be one of the members of Atlanta rap production duo UGLY) is clearly a fashion pioneer. Think about it: the iPad as a 21st century sandwich board. Forget nametags or "witty" t-shirt designs -- just strap an iPad to your chest and send out whatever message crosses your mind, whether it's advertising your business or, as in this case, your love of music.
It's brilliant, yet somehow terrifying at the same time. If you're going to go with this look, though, make sure you find a strap that can handle 1.5 pounds of weight... it'd be a shame for that $499 fashion accessory to wind up shattered at your feet.
If you want to emulate this fashion-forward look, but you're worried about straining your neck, I guess you can always start small with an iPod touch or iPhone before you start bulking up those neck muscles.
Thanks for sending this in, Paul.TUAWLook out, Flava Flav: iPad as fashion statement originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 18 Apr 2010 01:35:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
