- Found Footage: How to write a screenplay on the iPad
Filed under: iPad
Nate and Biagio over at jokeandbiagio.com have come up with a Pages hack for writing screenplays on the iPad. At this time, there are a few iPhone apps for writing screenplays, but none of them exist in an iPad version... yet. As you can see in the video above, the solution that these two Hollywood hotshots have come up with is not perfect -- they gripe about the lack of the toolbar in landscape mode in Pages for iPad as much as I do -- but it proves that screenwriting on the iPad can be done.
Nate came up with a template in the Mac version of Pages '09 that includes a bunch of screenplay styles, such as CH for character, PA for parenthetical, SL for slug, AC for action, TR for transition, etc... You can download the template here -- note that if you're reading this on your iPad and have Pages for iPad installed, you can open the template directly in Pages and get started on that Oscar-winning screenplay today.TUAWFound Footage: How to write a screenplay on the iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 12 Apr 2010 18:00:00 EST. Filed under: iPhone
Apple has posted an outline of what it believes to be the key enterprise features of iPhone OS 4.0. Third-party multitasking, enhanced security and mobile device management are among the marquee features.
As a former IT director, I'm drawn in by mobile device management (MDM). Setting up individual pieces of hardware is a time-consuming hassle. New MDM APIs let developers integrate features like wireless configuration and update, remote wipes and policy compliance (no games, please!) into their apps. Additionally, wireless app distribution lets managers then install those apps over Wi-Fi and 3G.
Apple also touts the unified email inbox and SSL VPN support along with pre-existing features like Exchange support.
Still, there will be users who feel that the iPhone is a plaything when compared to the all-business Blackberry. May they enjoy their plastic QWERTY keyboards and multi-tasking prowess for years to come.TUAWiPhone OS 4.0: Enterprise Features originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 12 Apr 2010 17:30:00 EST. TUAWloha! If you're into the kitsch and nostalgia of tiki culture, then you're going to love the new iTiki iPhone skins from IAA. According to the video above, you'll be protected from evil and become more attractive to members of the opposite sex if you put an iTiki on your iPhone. Hey, it's on the Internet -- it can't be a lie!
It's also the only iPhone case we've seen here at TUAW that has a butt (see the video for details), a navel, hands, and "feets." To quote the important historical information on the back of the iTiki box, "In Polynesian culture, Tiki was the first man and he created woman, because he was lonely. Later, he created the Mai Tai and several himself-themed bars because he was thirsty. Just think what he'll do for your iPhone!"
The lovely and classy iTiki skins, available in Pacific Blue and Koa Orange, would normally cost you US$29.97. TUAW, in the interest of furthering historical research into tiki culture, is going to give away two of these top-quality skins that are designed on the North Shore of the island of Oahu, Hawaii.
All you need to do to enter is leave us a comment below with your choice of color. We'll do the rest, and two lucky TUAW readers will be swinging in style with the iTiki skins. Check out the details below:
- Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 and older.
- To enter, leave a comment telling us what color (Pacific Blue or Koa Orange) iTiki you'd like to win.
- The comment must be left before midnight on Tax Day, April 15, 2010, 11:59PM Eastern Daylight Time.
- You may enter only once.
- Two winners will be selected in a random drawing.

How do old favorites hold up on the iPad? In our "From iPhone to iPad" series, TUAW revisits iPhone applications that have transitioned to the iPad. We look at their latest incarnation and see how the new measures up to the old. Today, TUAW looks at Flick Fishing.
I've been a big fan of this application for some time now so I was eager to give it a try on the iPad. Flick Fishing is a fishing simulator. You cast out a line, you wait for a fish, you reel in your catch, and then repeat. The trick lies in managing your line tension, choosing the right distance to cast your hook, and nursing your fish along -- as you hope the latest catch is a record breaker. It's an addictive game that worked beautifully on the iPhone.
To move to the iPad, the game needed to make some compromises. For one thing, the notion of "flicking" the reel had to go. While the iPhone easily fits in your hand, the iPad does not. Instead of casting your line by moving the device, you now use a "Cast" button. The reel control, formerly placed right next to the rod, appears well across the screen. The physical iPad realities drove those design changes and the game suffers, however slightly, as a result. You can imagine the iPhone as a hand-held fishing pole; you cannot do the same with the iPad.
So what's improved? Keep reading.
TUAW is commonly provided with not-for-resale licenses or promo codes to permit product evaluations and reviews. For more details, see our policy page. Promo code requests are not guarantees of review.

There's not a lot of details out about Apple's upcoming mobile advertising program, iAds, quite yet, but Broadpoint Amtech is already convinced it's a moneymaker. Analysts there say that the program could generate a whopping US$4.67 billion in revenue in just one year's time. Of course, that's a high-end guess, but even the medium figures are pretty amazing -- analyst Brian Marshall suggests that even conservatively, Apple could earn $2.48 billion. Realize what we're talking about here: this is more or less a from-scratch profit stream for Apple, and with developers receiving 60% of the revenue from iAds, Apple won't be the only company making money.
In fact, Apple's good news may benefit Google, too -- CEO Eric Schmidt said that Apple's iAds announcement should convince those concerned that Google's deal with AdMob is good to go, and that the two companies will just be one big player in "a highly competitive market." Of course, Google has a bit more advertising experience than Apple -- it made most of its $23.7 billion revenue last year from its online advertising model. While iAds sounds big, it's not quite that big.
Still, iAds will be big, and there's room to grow -- Apple is starting off with the mobile market, but don't forget that they've got a whole library of iTunes podcasts, and content space on AppleTV to sell as well. At this time next year, we might be reporting that Apple really has created a $2.5 billion-per-year income stream for themselves.TUAWiAds could make a billion dollars, help Google make their deal originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 12 Apr 2010 15:30:00 EST. As we mentioned last week, Savant is currently running a road tour to show off its iPad interface for home automation; Mike Schramm was able to catch up with the festivities in California and got a good taste of the possibilities for replacing 'expensive glass' in proprietary controllers with the readily available Apple touch devices.
Unfortunately for Mike, the Savant crew can't truck a full suite of home controls and AV devices around with them in their carry-ons, so he couldn't get the full-force feel of the system in operation. Lucky for me, I did: along with TUAW TV's Chad Mumm, I got a chance to visit the extraordinarily well-equipped Savant Experience Center, located in New York's SoHo district within sight of the Apple Store. All the touch displays in the installation are driven by Mac minis on the back end.
Savant has tricked out this model apartment with scores of high-performance displays, a digital kitchen, a Steinway player piano driven by an iPod (!) and even a seven-seat screening room. Obviously, the budget for this sort of setup would be sky-high, but it's a demonstration of what's possible. We visited prior to the iPad introduction, so while you'll see the iPhone in use as a controller, the iPad itself remains a phantom in the video.
Click the Read More link below to watch the episode. It's in the Brightcove player, so unfortunately it does require Flash until we can get the HTML5 player in gear. It's not nearly as seamless as expected... yet. For the Flash-impaired, here's the YouTube link.

Uncertainty is a powerful marketing tool.
When the stick turns blue and you find that you're pregnant, you assuage your anxiety at Babies R Us and little boutiques.* Bottle warmer meets wipe warmer and binkie sanitizer in a frenzy of pre-parenthood purchases meant to ensure Jr.'s future. Not only that, but the stuff is so darn cute. You lose control. You overspend.
You buy a Bugaboo.
In much the same way that Moleskine is the legendary notebook of Hemingway and Picasso, Bugaboo is the fabled stroller of Paltrow and Damon. While Gwyneth has an Apple inside her chariot, you can have one on top. An iPhone at least.
Bugaboo has introduced an iPhone holder for their strollers. It easily clips onto the handle of the Bugaboo Cameleon and Bee models and swivels 360º. The silicon holder can be removed with the iPhone to double as a case when you're cavorting at Gymboree or scrubbing gnawed Arrowroot Biscuit from your Frog.
If you do pick one up, Bugaboo will donate 1 percent of all proceeds to the Global Fund to help eliminate AIDS in Africa. The holder costs US$25 and will be available on May 1st.
Of course, a chance to tweet Jr.'s every coo is priceless.

Everybody needs storage, and lots of it.
The race for space began when we started taking digital pictures, accelerated when we began purchasing music online, and went positively orbital when movies and TV went digital. While big drives in desktop machines are becoming commonplace (1 TB drives are now standard in most iMac configurations), what happens when you have a couple of laptops or older machines that you want to back up, or if you want to share data with others in your office or home? That's when some sort of network-attached storage comes in handy.
Network-attached storage is nothing new; you can even consider Apple's US$299 Time Capsule to be a wireless NAS. Now storage manufacturer LaCie has released the US$190 Network Space 2 device, providing 1 TB of storage and speedy connectivity. LaCie provided TUAW with a Network Space 2 for review purposes, so we put it through its paces before sending it back to the company. Filed under: iPad
I'm going to come right out and say it. I hate the Apple iPad case.
I thought I'd like the fact that it protects the iPad and works as a stand. I don't.
For US$39, I really thought Apple would deliver a protective case that perfectly augmented the iPad using experience. It didn't. Unfortunately, I pre-ordered my case before Victor gave the case his once over.
How do I hate the case? Let me count the ways. I hate the hard edges that constantly catch my fingers whenever I pull the case out of my handbag. I hate the folding bit that never folds back quite flat. I hate how the bottom of the case keeps me from easily putting in or pulling out the docking cable. I hate how unstable the whole thing is, especially when I try to stand it in portrait mode or in full-up landscape (rather than laying down-ish landscape) orientations.
For the $40 I paid, I was hoping for more. Or at least...better. I've tried giving the case a shot on a day to day basis, but after using it for a while I'm just giving up.
For now, I'm going back to a padded envelope--at least until more and better cases hit the market. As Mike Rose puts it, "Padded envelopes are cheap, readily available, and involve no labor." If the same-old-same-old ennui drags you down, you can apply duct tape and an Apple label to spice things up.TUAWRoad tested: The Apple-branded iPad case originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 12 Apr 2010 13:30:00 EST. Filed under: iPod Family, iPhone, SDK
An TUAW informant has slipped us some video showcasing a new application built into iPhone OS 4.0. Apparently bundled with iPods and iPhones, the new application transforms the iPhone screen into a simple remote control which is used to manipulate a menu system that's fed out via a video lead. That menu system was captured in the recording shown at the top of this post.
Our source says that information bundled into the application shows that Apple intends this new "iPod out" functionality to be used in automobiles using the iPod Accessory Protocol (IAP). Hints as to this use are found in strings within the application itself. These strings include IAPSimpleRemoteCarButtonNotification and IAPSimpleRemoteCarButtonTypeKey.
He suggests that the application might be used in an Apple-branded car kit, where the user docks his iPhone or iPod touch and gains full access to the onboard audio libraries (no video at this time). The car kit could include both a video screen to show the menus and custom physical buttons that would produce the notifications to allow the user to move through those menus, and select from them.
Other hints in the application point to hands-free phone integration as well (kCTCallStatusChangeNotification). Incoming phone calls would be routed into the same system, allowing users to answer calls without having to pick up their device.
The idea of an Apple-branded iPhone Car Kit sounds pretty exciting to us. What do you think? Переслать - Adobe CS5 launched, wallets everywhere cry out as one and are silenced
Filed under: Software
Adobe Systems, Inc. today announced the latest version of their Creative Suite -- Adobe CS5. The updated applications are expected to ship in mid-May, and youcan seemight be able to view videos that highlight the new features on Adobe TV.
As with earlier versions, CS5 will come in different flavors. For the print media designer, there's Adobe CS5 Design Premium (US$1,899, upgrades from $599), which includes new versions of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash Catalyst and Professional, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Acrobat 9 Pro, and Bridge and Device Central.
If you're primarily working in the Web design world, you'll want to pick up Adobe CS5 Web Premium ($1,799, upgrades from $599). It features Dreamweaver, Contribute, Flash Catalyst, Professional and Builder, Photoshop Extended, Illustrator, Acrobat 9 Pro, Fireworks, and Bridge and Design Central.
Video professionals will swoon over Adobe CS5 Production Premium ($1,699, upgrades from $599), made up of Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop Extended, Soundbooth, OnLocation, Encore, Flash Catalyst and Professional, Dynamic Link, and Bridge and Design Central.
Of course, you can always max out that Visa card and get the whole shootin' match -- AKA Adobe CS5 Master Collection ($2,599, upgrades from $899). This includes everything that you could possibly want or need, except for the octo-core Mac Pro you'll need to run all of this.
During the breathless and "Flashy" livestream event this morning (a livestream of something that was obviously pre-recorded), Flash Player 10.1 was also announced. Adobe is still hopeful that they'll be able to let iPhone and iPad users join in on the fun through content developed in Flash Pro CS5 and run through Packager for iPhone, although Apple has other ideas.
For creative professionals, today's announcement definitely provides excitement in terms of new features and functionality for the suite, but also creates the dilemma of how to afford the pricey software and upgrade their hardware to run the applications at a decent speed. In the past, many designers have waited to upgrade Adobe's Creative Suite until the inevitable bugs have been quashed. How about you, TUAW readers? If you're in the design world, are you going to pick up CS5 as soon as you can?TUAWAdobe CS5 launched, wallets everywhere cry out as one and are silenced originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 12 Apr 2010 12:30:00 EST. Filed under: Odds and ends
Calling John Locke! If you aren't too busy on the Island, perhaps you can help us out with a little number mystery in Cupertino. John? Hello? You there?
For years, Apple has featured a recurring number in all of its iPhone ads and screen shots. The time in the status bar always reads 9:42. What's more, since the debut of the iPad, the time in every iPad ad and screen shot always reads 9:41.
9:42 or 9:41. Every single time.
What can those specific times mean? Well since Locke isn't answering my pleas for help (you'd think he was dead or something), I'll just have to turn to another Jon. Apple's iPhone number question has bugged Jon Manning, lead developer of Secret Lab, for years. Did the numbers have some sort of cosmic significance or were they just randomly selected by an Apple graphic designer with a thing for the 9:40ish time slot?
Jon dug around for answers, but after the search led nowhere, he eventually all but gave up on finding out what the numbers meant. Then, this past January, he began noticing the iPad's reoccurring numbers and knew it couldn't be random chance -- these numbers did mean something. How would he find out what that something was, though?TUAW9 41 9 42: The secret of Apple's recurring numbers originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 12 Apr 2010 12:00:00 EST. What's on your iPhone? is a new TUAW series that we'll run occasionally so you can see what the bloggers at your favorite Apple site are running on their pocket devices. This was suggested by one of our readers, who wanted to know just what kind of stuff we had on our iPhones. Since we're a group of individuals who all think a bit differently, it makes a lot of sense to have each of the bloggers in turn write up a short blurb on their favorite apps.
In this post I'll list those apps that deserve special attention, but to see all of the apps that I currently have on my iPhone 3GS, you'll need to take a look at the gallery at the end of the post.
To start with, you'll find that I have a lot of camera apps. In nearly three years, I've used my iPhones to take literally thousands of pictures. I love the look of most of the photos, and it's even more fun to run them through a filter or two to add some pizazz to the pics. I currently have the default iPhone Camera and Photos apps, but have added Best Camera, Zoom Lens, Pano, Color Splash, Project 365, Lo-Mob, Self Image, ReelDirector (for video), FocalLab, CinemaFX, iTimeLapse, iCamcorder (for video), and CameraForiPad to my 3GS.TUAWWhat's on your iPhone, Steve Sande? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 12 Apr 2010 11:30:00 EST. In the few days that I've had an iPad, I've found a favorite way to demo it for friends, family, and people I stop at random in the hallways: fire up the Netflix app and start streaming Wargames. I can't say why this particular movie works well, but it just looks and sounds so good. "That's coming over the Internet?" they ask, and jaws drop. It's delightful -- even though I may have to switch movies now that Wrath of Khan is on the list. The iPad's bona fides as a video-watching device are undeniable, but managing your media for synchronization isn't fun, even in iTunes. On the 16GB model, you may find yourself shuffling movies and TV shows in and out of the sync list on a frequent basis. Wouldn't it be nicer if you could simply stream any video file from your Mac or PC and have it play back instantly on your iPad, anywhere in the house?
Let's dispense with one quick caveat: neither of these apps will stream FairPlay-protected content, such as iTunes Store purchased/rented movies or network TV shows. Videos that you create or convert from DVD, however, will work just fine.

Well, after the abysmal Pre sales, who didn't see this coming? Palm has put itself up for sale. Bloomberg reports that, at this point, Taiwan's HTC Corp. and China's Lenovo Group Ltd. have expressed interest in the company and may make offers. However, the most likely buyer of Palm is expected to be HTC. Though HTC has committed to the Android platform, Palm has something they desperately need: patents.
In March Apple filed suit against HTC for infringing on 20 patents concerning the iPhone's user interface and hardware. If HTC could acquire Palm's patents they would have ammunition to use against Apple, which would open up the possibility of a counter-suit. As of market close on Friday, Palm was worth only $870M, making it a relatively cheap company to buy.
So cheap, in fact, that it would make sense for Apple to snap the company up -- again, just for the patents. An Apple acquisition of Palm would not only prevent HTC from acquiring the ability to counter-sue Apple, it would strengthen Apple's patent portfolio even more and leverage greater protection against its intellectual property.

iPhone - Palm - Apple - Unofficial Apple Weblog - HTC CorporationПереслать - Brooklyn's borough prez makes a play for Apple Store
Filed under: Retail
It may seem like New York City is already pretty well stocked with Apple retail outlets. With four full-scale storefronts in Manhattan, including the iconic 24-hour 5th Ave cube and the new Upper West Side 'temple of iPad,' the city's 5th store in the Staten Island Mall seems like an afterthought. Do the Big Apple's denizens really need yet another Apple Store?
According to Brooklyn's borough president Marty Markowitz, the answer isn't just "Yes," it's "Hell, yes!" In an email last week to Steve Jobs, Marty implored the Apple management team to consider a retail presence in the 'Creative Capital' of NYC.
He pointed out that Brooklyn's retail resurgence is ongoing and upward-trending in a tough market; the new IKEA store in the ruggedly hip Red Hook district is among the chain's top American outlets (although it's easier to get there from Manhattan, by water shuttle, than from most of Brooklyn), and the neighborhood also hosts the popular Fairway supermarket. Those of you with long memories may recall that a Brooklyn Apple store was 'confirmed'... two years ago.
With Brooklyn's Mac-friendly neighborhoods of Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO and Williamsburg eager to shop local, the idea of an Apple store in the borough does make some sense. DUMBO in particular is home to scores of digital firms, including our friends at Dealnews/Dealmac and Freeverse (in the same office building).
To make sure that Steve got the message, Marty & his team went the extra mile and put together a little video promo. It features a newly purchased iPad that was, to the borough president's shock and horror, imported from Manhattan. Click the 'Read More' link to watch.
As a matter of Brooklyn pride, I'd love to see my borough get its very own Apple store. As a practical consideration, however, my daily commute takes me past one Manhattan store and drops me off a 10-minute bus ride from another, so I doubt I'd be a regular at a store close to home.
Thanks Laurie, Carlos & Kacy!

Do you like the iPhone clock? Do you miss the iPhone clock? Do you wish the iPhone clock would install and work on your 3.2 iPad? Developer Steven Troughton-Smith has posted some handy how-to instructions on his personal blog. The secret lies in getting hold of a 3.1 compiled build (normally via jailbreak and sftp), editing its Info.plist file, and re-signing the app so it can be installed via Xcode.
This is a developers-only solution, and not for the faint of heart. The application can be signed and installed only onto those iPads that have been registered with Apple at the developer portal. You'll need to be comfortable editing Info.plist files (using a property list editor or text editor), and installing apps using the Xcode organizer window.
Although I confirmed that the install process works (it did not, by the way for Weather or Stocks), I have not been able to test the actual alarm features because, well, I don't actually see an alarm interface when I run the app. But it's still early days as far as this hack goes, and maybe I missed a step somewhere.
Stroughton-Smith reports that many features work fine in the sandbox and can still set system alarms. That's a pretty handy feature for anyone who wants the iPad to wake them in the morning -- even if I still can't quite figure out how to do it.
I had no problem using World Clock. The Stopwatch worked fine. But, along with the alarm, I couldn't get the Timer to work. If you have some work-arounds for those features, jump in into the comments.TUAWhacksugar: Install the 3.1 Clock on your 3.2 iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 11 Apr 2010 22:25:00 EST. iPhone - Unofficial Apple Weblog - IPad - Apple - XcodeПереслать - A first week with the iPad
Filed under: iPad
How has week #1 with the iPad been? Pretty good actually. I wasn't going to get one, but while on a TUAW assignment to get some photos... and kinda sorta held up my hand and did the deed.
I'm glad I did. It's now a constant companion. I actually prefer surfing the web with it over my laptop because it is small, weighs less, and is quite speedy. I haven't seen any of the wireless issues some are reporting. Mail is good, but I can't wait for that unified inbox coming this fall.
I had some need to control a PC, so I looked around for some kind of remote client for the iPad. There were plenty of them the iPhone, but I wanted full resolution. I wound up with RDM+, which is a US$9.99 app that lets me connect to my Macs or PC without any firewall fooling around. Screen updates were fast enough, and installation had no hiccups. I'm sure there are some other solutions, but RDM+ worked very well. I took my iPad to a restaurant and I connected to my PC with a click.
Battery life has been amazing. I use the iPad pretty heavily, and can easily get through 2 days or more without a re-charge. The screen is excellent for displaying still images and video.TUAWA first week with the iPad originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 11 Apr 2010 19:30:00 EST. iPhone - IPad - Unofficial Apple Weblog - Apple - Personal computerПереслать - iPhone 4.0 beta walkthrough video in English
A few days ago we posted a Polish language video walkthrough of some of the features in the iPhone OS 4.0 initial beta. Since then, Michael Sherlock put together an English language video of a number of the features present in the new beta.
This video includes brief demos of:- Spell Check
- Changing the Background image.
- New features in the Camera.app
- Making and populating Folders
- The Unified Mail Inbox
- The new Mail threading feature
- and the new Game Center.
I know one feature that I would like to see has not yet been addressed: the ability to rename Bluetooth devices. I use three Griffin BlueTrip Bluetooth receivers at home and when looking at the Bluetooth devices in the current version of the iPhone OS, all three come up with the same name and can't be changed. I'd like the ability to rename Bluetooth devices so I can get a handle on which BlueTrip is which. It's a minor point, but one that would make life quite a bit easier for me. I'm sure that this feature getting into OS 4.0 is about as likely as my winning the lottery, but if anyone from Apple is reading this...
What features did you see that were left out of OS 4.0 and would mean the world to you?TUAWiPhone 4.0 beta walkthrough video in English originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Sun, 11 Apr 2010 18:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
