  • iTunes: Free Tuesday

Welcome to this week's edition of Free Tuesday. Every week, we search though the iTunes stores around the world to bring you the newest and freshest iTunes freebies. This week, I've added a new category to try out: "Podcast Finds", free video that can be accessed internationally. If you like it or hate it, let us know in the comments.

    US Music

US: Herculean by The Good, The Bad And The Queen
With both Blur and Gorillaz, Damon Albarn brought forward a more dynamic, elastic definition of what pop music could be. With the latter, he reminded us that artists need not even be real. For this project, there's no doubting the reality of a line-up that includes the Clash's Paul Simonon, afro-beat legend Tony Allen, and the Verve's Simon Tong. "Herculean" is a downtempo, late-night evocation of desolate urban life. There's more than a little hope underneath the heavy atmosphere, as this song - like most of Albarn's tunes - finds beauty within the chaos.

    US: El Sello by Ardnaxela
Our free Single of the Week comes from the Puerto Rican singer Ardnaxela. If the name seems a little bit confusing, read it backwards and you'll see where it comes from. "El Sello" has an exciting, low-key sound - almost as if she's fused the worlds of disco and acoustic pop. So for those of you who like to dance, but feel a bit inhibited in the clubs, this is the tune for you.

US: On the Third Day by Michael Olson
"On the Third Day" is taken from Michael Olson's sophomore album, Where Fear and Faith Collide. The track is a watertight pop song ready for mainstream acceptance, with the Christian artist relaying his faith with a tremendous amount of passion and confidence. Those with a weakness for epic grandeur and who tend to get misty-eyed thinking of "we are all one"-type sentiments should have a seat and take a listen to our free Discovery Download.

More great freebies after the jump...

  • ZunePhone: Part Deux

TUAW reader Rich pointed us to this hilarious RegisteredMedia iPhone parody ad, which resonated with me along much the same lines as the video where Microsoft redesigned the iPod package. Perhaps there will only ever be one Jonathan Ive. Perhaps Apple cultivates design as a goal rather than a side effect. But I do find that many Microsoft offerings are more than necessarily clunky.

I'm looking forward to the design improvements I've heard about in Vista, an OS I have not yet had a chance to play with (I'm still stuck in WinXP SP2-ville). And although the Zune does not have the same elegant feel as the iPod (both its physical design and via its interface), there are some actual positive design thoughts that the unit expresses, something I've not seen much of in the past (Yes, I've been using Windows since version 1. It was awful.)

I also enjoyed this parody iPhone-cover from the RegisteredMedia site.

  • Cisco-esque AppleTV ships

No, it's not the real[TM] AppleTV, but we thought you might get a giggle out of this alterna-AppleTV found by loyal TUAW reader Opus Moreschi. It's an apple-shaped kids TV he found on Amazon. At about five hundred bucks for a teeny 10" LCD, it kind of makes the actual $299 AppleTV look practically like a bargain in comparison. Now, we're just holding our breath for the whole lawsuit thing that is sure to follow.

  • Flyz Screensaver 1.1.2

    Filed under:

I don't know how I managed to avoid earlier versions of the Flyz Screensaver, but I just came across version 1.1.2 on VersionTracker and I am pleased to see they've "fixed a bug that was causing the flies and maggots to accumulate at the bottom-left corner of Intel Mac screens" and "increased the maximum number of flies to 40." W00t!

If you like being grossed out, or like grossing out others, the Flyz Screensaver might be an appropriate download for you. Flyz is "an infestation of ewwey, gooey, flies and maggots, making a mess of your Mac's screen." And if that's not appealing enough, perhaps the price tag (free, although there's an enhanced version for $5) will lure you in.

Of course some people already have a similar effect without having to download anything at all!

Oh, how I long for the days when Flying Toasters was enough to keep us entertained when our screens were idle...

  • MAKE's guide to PDF podcasts

My Make-buddy Phillip Torrone tipped us off on his recent PDF-in-iTunes guide. As you might already know, there are more and more PDFs appearing in iTunes, usually as support material for podcasts but they're starting to become a desirable product in and of themselves. Philip and his crew have put together as complete a PDF podcast guide as possible, to help people locate and download iTunes-available PDF podcasts from sources like CRAFT, SkyMaul (*hee*!), Rick Steves and more. Lots and lots of cool stuff to explore.

  • Star Wars TSG, because everyone wants to be George Lucas

Grubs (that's what I call Daring Fireball's John Gruber, we're cool like that) posted Star Wars TSG to his Linked List and it is a winner. And by winner I mean a small, free application that wastes far more of your time than it should, but for some reason you're not upset about all that lost time.

Star Wars TSG does one thing: lets you create your very own 'Star Wars title crawl.' If you don't know your Ewoks from your Klingons you might not be aware that the opening title sequence to each Star Wars movie follows the same basic format. This is the format that Star Wars TSG allows you to create for yourself. It even outputs your creation in a number of different sizes. One word of caution: this application renders a sequence of bitmaps that you can stitch together using QuickTime (or another movie editing suite). This means that you should be careful where you point the 'Destination Folder' in the Generate section. You're going to be generating around 800 images to create your masterpiece, and something tells me you don't want them all cluttering up your desktop.

  • Welcome to Bizarro World: Parallels and VMware running Mac OS X on XP?

OK, the Parallels-dar was apparently down for refurbishment this weekend, since everyone else has this story already: CNN/Money has posted a column by David Fitzpatrick of Fortune that reveals some fascinating tidbits about virtualization in, and virtualization of, Mac OS X.

Fitzpatrick announced, apparently for the first time in public, that Parallels is the corporate child of server-side virtualization company SWsoft, makers of VM tool Virtuozzo and server management console Plesk. It's SWsoft's deep pockets that have been keeping the lights on during the cold Moscow winters (most of the Parallels dev team is located in Russia). Even more fascinating, Fitzpatrick quotes the chiefs of both SWsoft and VMware on another topic (emphasis mine):

VMware's CEO Diane Greene told me last week that her company's existing x86 desktop product is already being used by some to run Mac OS on computers from Dell, HP and others, though this is not intentional on VMware's part.

SWsoft's Beloussov says that this spring, Parallels will upgrade its software further, in a way that by coincidence will make it easier to run Mac OS on a non-Apple computer. He also insists that is not deliberate, but just a consequence of the nature of the technology, especially now that Intel builds virtualization technology into its chips.

Really truly? If this is happening, it's a very big deal. With the back-office expertise of both VMware and SWsoft, when Mac OS X (or, more likely, Mac OS X Server) becomes a virtualized player on server-class systems, it's going to shake things up quite a bit for Mac server admins. If any of you out there are already running Mac OS X under VMware on Windows... don't hide your light under a bushel, let us know about it.

Update 8 am ET: Several loyal night-shift readers have noted that a hacked version of OS X has been runnable under VMware for some time. I'm aware of this, but -- and no disrespect to the dedicated folks at insanelymac.com that are working to optimize the experience -- this situation is parallel (pun intended) to the XPonMac.com boot loader vs. Boot Camp. When a boxed copy of OS X runs under a standard install of VMware or Parallels, you've entered what I shudder to call the Hack-Free Zone; that's a place where the non-enthusiast community may take advantage of the capability, as happened with Boot Camp. Not to forget, OS X does not require serial number activation... so a Parallels image of OS X would be infinitely portable. That's not gonna last.

    Thanks David!

  • Shopping for Vista

    Filed under:

Ever go shopping for OS X? There's the standard version, the server, and the family pack. And that's more or less about it. Vista? Not so much. As loyal TUAW reader Tyler pointed out, you can get the Ultimate version, the Premium version, the Home Premium version, the Business version, the Home Basic version, Additional Licence packs, the 64-bit Business Ultimate version for System Builders, the 32-bit Business Ultimate version for System Builders, the 64-bit Home Ultimate version for System Builders, and...

I'm sorry. I just can't go on. It's too overwhelming. And it goes on for page after expensive page after page after page on Amazon. So what does this tell you about Vista? And about Microsoft? The words unfocused and inefficient immediately spring to mind. They're spending way too much time creating distinctions that don't actually have a functional difference in the way that people actually use their computers, and which in the end will harm their brand identity.
