  • Tutorama: Mac Tutorial Contest

Macinstruct is a new (and as of yet incomplete) website that will apparently be offering a variety of Mac educational resources. What they do already have up, however, is a contest they are calling "Tutorama." To enter you must create some sort of Mac related tutorial. They say that they are "searching for the most innovative and creative tutorials ever created. Go ahead: Try and out-teach the teachers. Write step-by-step tutorials and film video podcasts. Create Flash movies and computer-based trainings." The contest is being judged by some big name Mac folk like Dan Frakes, Robin Williams, and others. The prize package is not inconsiderable, with the overall winner taking home a Mac mini and various software.

So if you have any great ideas for a Mac related tutorial, check out the official rules and get to work.

  • New Adobe CS3 Icon Contest

    Filed under:

After the Photoshop CS3 beta was released, we noted the new series of icons that Adobe is apparently planning to roll out all across their product line. Based on a kind of combination color-wheel and periodic table the icons have met with with a mixed response. Personally, I don't really like the minimalist design, so I'm pleased to see that Quark VS InDesign is sponsoring a contest for users to design a new set of CS3 icons. They claim that "First, second, and third place winners will divide a more than 50-item prize chest valued at more than US$7,000" and all entries will be placed on the site for free download. The contest ends on April 23, with the winner to be announced a week later.

Now's the time for all those great Mac icon designers to get to work on saving us from Adobe, and maybe pick up some loot as well.

  • Spanning Sync announces public beta

Charlie Wood from Spanning Sync, the 'missing link' software we mentioned back in November that can keep iCal and Google Calendar n'sync, just let us know that a public beta (version 1.0b11) is now available (zip download link). Getting started with iCal + gCal syncing bliss is simple:
    1. Download the aforementioned zip file
    2. Install Spanning Sync, which runs as a System Preference pane
    3. Enter your Google Account credentials, or go get one (they're free, and if you already have something like a Gmail address, you're good to go)
    4. Select which calendars from iCal you want to sync with Google Calendar (and if you haven't signed into Google Calendar at least once, do so now)
    5. Press "Sync Now"
    6. Sit back and marvel at the wonders of desktop + Google Calendar syncing
I've been participating in their private beta for the last couple of months, and Spanning Sync has shaped up pretty well. The ability to keep my desktop synced with Google Calendar has been quite a life-saver for me, and I definitely recommend taking it for a spin, as I couldn't find any viable alternatives. The one catch that Spanning Sync has run into so far is alarm/reminder syncing. Since Google Calendar only supports alarms in your main, personal calendar, Spanning Sync can't include this feature until the gCal team shape up and fly right. Still, while I find myself using reminders for some of my key events, I didn't find this quirk to be a deal-breaker.

As of this writing, a price is yet to be announced, though there will be two plans. The first is an annual subscription rate, while the second is a one-time, lifetime purchase for those who want to get past all the riff-raff. Stay tuned for more details.

  • iSale 4 brings major eBay auction upgrades

iSale from equinux is a killer app for anyone serious about selling on eBay, and a recent update to version 4 brings some major new features to the table. A completely revamped template chooser functions much like GarageBand's sample chooser, utilizing multiple keywords to help you filter through over 130+ templates to find the perfect look and feel for your auctions. iSale 4 can now also pull item descriptions from Amazon, eBay and even your very own Delicious Library database, taking the chore out of collecting the nitty gritty details of whatever items you're posting. There is also much broader support for 'boilerplates,' snippets of information that remains the same across all your auctions such as shipping, introductions, item descriptions and even a general footer. In addition to already supporting FTP and .Mac for alternative image hosting for your auctions (eBay charges per picture), iSale 4 now also supports uploading and hosting from Flickr. Last but certainly not least on iSale 4's new features list is robust support for multiple eBay accounts, making it much easier for über-sellers or families to manage multiple accounts all in one app, without purchasing separate licenses or going through the effort of switching users in Mac OS X.

As a happy iSale customer in the past, I can tell you I've already upgraded and am darn satisfied with the new features. A three auction demo is available, while a full single license costs $40. Upgrades from 3.x are on sale for $14.95 (down from $19.95), though anyone who purchased after December 1st, 2006 gets grandfathered in at no charge. Multi-license packs are also available, starting at $49.95 for up to three Macs.

  • SubEthaEdit is Now Tabtastic

Quirky, but cool, collaborative text editor SubEthaEdit is out today with version 2.6, which adds everybody's favorite (relatively) new UI item: tabs. Of course the main reason to use SubEthaEdit remains its collaborative features, nonetheless the addition of tabs is definitely a strong secondary reason to consider it over text editors stuck with the older drawer paradigm for multiple documents. Personally, I'd really like to see TextMate follow this trend by divorcing tabs from projects. On a side note, I have to agree with Gruber that ⌘T should now universally belong to the "New Tab" Command (and not the fonts panel as is the OS X standard respected by SubEthaEdit and other applications).

SubEthaEdit is $35 and a demo is available.
