  • Welcome to Bizarro World: Parallels and VMware running Mac OS X on XP?

OK, the Parallels-dar was apparently down for refurbishment this weekend, since everyone else has this story already: CNN/Money has posted a column by David Fitzpatrick of Fortune that reveals some fascinating tidbits about virtualization in, and virtualization of, Mac OS X.

Fitzpatrick announced, apparently for the first time in public, that Parallels is the corporate child of server-side virtualization company SWsoft, makers of VM tool Virtuozzo and server management console Plesk. It's SWsoft's deep pockets that have been keeping the lights on during the cold Moscow winters (most of the Parallels dev team is located in Russia). Even more fascinating, Fitzpatrick quotes the chiefs of both SWsoft and VMware on another topic (emphasis mine):

VMware's CEO Diane Greene told me last week that her company's existing x86 desktop product is already being used by some to run Mac OS on computers from Dell, HP and others, though this is not intentional on VMware's part.

SWsoft's Beloussov says that this spring, Parallels will upgrade its software further, in a way that by coincidence will make it easier to run Mac OS on a non-Apple computer. He also insists that is not deliberate, but just a consequence of the nature of the technology, especially now that Intel builds virtualization technology into its chips.

Really truly? If this is happening, it's a very big deal. With the back-office expertise of both VMware and SWsoft, when Mac OS X (or, more likely, Mac OS X Server) becomes a virtualized player on server-class systems, it's going to shake things up quite a bit for Mac server admins. If any of you out there are already running Mac OS X under VMware on Windows... don't hide your light under a bushel, let us know about it.

    Thanks David!

  • Apple to charge for Boot Camp?

Reports today indicate that Apple may be planning to take Boot Camp out of beta and transition it to a full, supported, paid-for offering. InformationWeek puts the final price at $29, similar to the price for QuickTime Pro, and not too much more than the $19 charge for Apple's MPEG-2 playback codec. If this pricing is correct (Apple has not confirmed it), it indicates that Apple sees Boot Camp as similar to these other items--something that some people will need but that most people can live without. I'd be surprised though if Boot Camp were not packaged into Leopard because it seems like such an integral part of what sells Intel Macs.

  • Found Video: iPod Shuffle commercial

Do you remember that Michael Jackson video? The one where people's faces morphed into other people's faces? This video is kind of like that. Except that it's more like one person's abdomen getting replaced by another person's abdomen. Sort of. It's actually a pretty cool commercial. I really enjoyed it and have now rewatched it several times. Just be careful while changing shirts while listening to your shuffle. In real life, you do not turn into another person. Your shuffle merely gets caught in the buttons.

    Thanks Matthew

Update: At first glance we thought this was a new ad, turns out it is the same at the US ad that appeared awhile ago. On the bright side, the US ad is no longer available on Apple's website, so if you want to save the ad to your machine here's your chance. See? No need to freak out in the comments about this.

  • Mad TV's take on the iPhone

I've never been a big fan of Mad TV (and I didn't really care for their iPad spoof - not because it was offensive, just because it wasn't funny), but a friend just sent me this clip from YouTube and I'll admit to being amused by it. The impression of Steve Jobs, as portrayed by Michael McDonald (not of Doobie Brothers fame), is not really very good, but I think the overall sentiment behind the skit is on the mark.

Is Steve Jobs an iWitch? You be the judge.

    Thanks, DD!
