  • Smile. You're on "candid laptop"

TUAW reader Dylan O'Donnell has set up his Macbook Pro to snap a picture using the built-in iSight whenever its lid opens. He put together a simple command line capture utility and triggered it with Bernard Bahr's SleepWatcher. Then he added automatic uploads via FTP and displayed the results with the open source BolGallery.

"I initially did this as an anti-theft measure as the script will upload the photos to any FTP site for you, and the PHP gallery will autothumb and display the photos. Apart from the nauseating effect of seeing my ugly mug repeating, the result is good and I hope to maybe do a time lapse in quicktime sometime down the track!"

It's a cute idea, completely open source, and an excellent example of ingenuity in action. It's also a good example of the completely self-conscious reasons that I do not personally own a webcam. Me, in the morning, before I've woken up and had my caffeine? Not a pretty picture.

  • The Netherlands Consumers Union takes on iTunes DRM

Today's International Herald Tribune reports that the European backlash against iTunes DRM just gained another member. The Dutch Consumentenbond (Consumer's Union) has filed complaints against Apple with both the anti-monopoly authority and the consumer's authority of the Netherlands.

TUAW reader Arjan writes, "This isn't a lawsuit, but both the NMA and the consumer's authority have the power to impose significant fines."

According to the Herald Tribune article, Consumentenbond spokesman Ewald van Kouwen said, "When you buy a music CD it doesn't play only on players made by Panasonic. People who download a song from iTunes shouldn't be bound to an iPod for the rest of their lives."

While this move does not seem tied into the earlier post today about Norway, nor to efforts in France and Germany to take on similar issues, it's clear that Europe is becoming a flash point for the questions of consumer rights, contract and copyright law.

    Thanks AJvK

  • Microsoft Norway Demos Vista on a Mac

Some things just speak for themselves. In this video on the Norwegian site VG TV (apparently associated with Norway's largest newspaper), a Microsoft Norway executive demonstrates Vista on what is clearly an Intel iMac (they don't even bother to hide the Apple logo). My Norwegian not being what it should be, I have no idea what they're saying, but our tipster tells us that they go through the entire demo without once mentioning that they're running it on a Mac!

    Thanks Olav!

US: Two-A-Days The Challenge (Season 2 Premiere)

These athletes live with the tremendous pressure to maintain Hoover's legendary reputation - not to mention keeping their grades up, keeping their girlfriends happy, and attempting to live a relatively normal senior year. Will their relationships be able to stand the test of two-a-day practices? Will they be the team to set a new record for Hoover? Watch the second season of Two-A-Days to find out just how hard they'll work to survive both the football season and their last year of high school.

    UK: Abominwé by Lionel Loueke
Lionel Loueke is an African guitarist who plays with such a fluidity and dexterous skill that he's becomes an in-demand player on both the jazz and African music sides. Our free Single of the Week introduces you to his subtle voice, and more importantly, shows you the sort of unique approach he has on the guitar. His experience as a percussionist gives him a rhythmic style, but his finger picking and melodic invention provides something even more unique. Have a listen - it's on us.

  • SuperSync: iTunes Library Syncing

SuperSync is a cross-platform application that allows you to sync two separate iTunes libraries. I actually have this problem as I am planning to set up some kind of central home music server, but my family has a couple of separate libraries. Unfortunately, there are a lot of duplicate songs between the libraries, so just mashing them together is not really feasible. SuperSync allows you to compare the two libraries and only copy over what missing. In addition to the syncing function, SuperSync allows you to access your music library from across the internet, e.g. accessing a home computer while on the road or at work.

SuperSync is available for Mac and Win (and, to be frank, it shows). Licenses come in multi-packs, temporarily on sale for $29.00 for two.

[Edit: I've heard some reports about problems with this software. As always if you try any software of this sort, be sure to backup!]

  • Hints of the Next Version of Keynote?

Many people noticed some unusual Keynote presentation effects in Job's recent keynote at MacWorld (e.g. the small text exploding above). Now Brian Peat over at KeynoteUser.com has gone through the keynote with a fine-toothed comb, identifying a bunch of new stuff, like path animations and lots of explosions that cannot be done with Keynote 3 (editorial note: explosions = good). Since it stands to reason that Jobs might just have access to some pre-release version of Keynote, it's a pretty safe guess that this is a preview of what's in store for Keynote 4. It's an interesting read and will probably have heavy Keynote users salivating for iWork '07.
