  • Apple walks away from third Manhattan store

TUAW reader Josh Madison pointed us to this recent Forbes article about Apple's decision to step back from a Manhattan retail deal. They've decided not to go ahead with their 34th Street multi-level Apple Store near Fifth and Sixth avenues. Forbes tells us that Apple had planned to open a thirty thousand square foot retail location but backed off, possibly having doubts regarding "the compatibility of its leading-edge image with that of middle-America 34th Street," and that the location might "tarnish its image". Because as we all know, middle America doesn't buy iPods or use Macintoshes, and you'll never find an Apple store in the middle of, say, a middle America shopping mall. Yeah, right. It's possible (or, in my opinion, almost certain) that Forbes is reading a bit too much into the decision to not go ahead with the store but it's hard to tell with so little actual data what the root causes are, or what it means to Apple's long term success.

    Thanks, Josh.

  • Macenstein tracks down switcher Ellen Feiss

Remember Ellen Feiss? She because famous in 2002 at the tender age of 14 for her Apple Switcher commercial, in which she talked about how her dad's computer had devoured her homework. Bummer, that. A controversy arose about whether or not Feiss was a stoner, and whether she was under the influence of Benadryl (or something perhaps less legal) at the time of the filming. It's five years later now, and Macenstein tracked her down and interviewed her.

Now 19, the famous "switcher girl" has finished high school, and has appeared in an independent foreign film. She talks about sudden fame, starting college, and about whether she was high during the ad (she says she was not--but that she has used marijuana under other circumstances). It's a quick interview, but one that you'll probably enjoy reading. I did.

    Thanks Mike

  • Beta Beat: PictoDrop

Mac Developer Cam Stevenson dropped us a note to let us know that BurrOak Software is looking for beta testers try out PictoDrop. PictoDrop is an image management program that looks like it will help you sort, version, and apply effects to your images in a very Aperture-lite post-processing way. It's a closed beta, so if you're interested you're going to need to send off an e-mail to pictobeta@burroak.on.ca to apply to be a tester.

It looks like a fairly cool program, built at least partially using Core Image.

  • Adobe says Lightroom ships mid-February, thanks beta testers

Adobe has announced a shipping date of February 19th for Lightroom, their new toolbox for professional photographers that's been in beta for the last year. Lightroom carries a final retail price of $299, but until April 30th, Adobe is saying thanks to everyone who participated in the beta (and lowering the bar for early customers) with a price of $199. The current beta expires February 28th, so either way it's decision time for those who have found a place in their hearts (and workflows) for this professional managing, adjusting and presenting photography software.

For more details on Lightroom, we've been following the betas since Lightroom's introduction, and Macworld also has a nice summary of the latest improvements to the shipping version. Adobe, naturally, also has an official product page with demos, feature tours and interviews with photographers on the beta experience and what it's like to see Lightroom get all growed up, ready to make a difference in the (wide-angled) world of professional photography.

  • PackRat goes 1.0

PackRat, the killer syncing and offline Backpack client that does even more than Backpack itself, has reached an official 1.0 status. After more than a year in the oven, developer Rod Schmidt posted an understandably excited announcement on his company's blog, complete with some new features that round out PackRat's abilities. New in v1.0 are Growl reminder notifications, printing pages as well as searching them (via the Find command), a revamped 'add item' dialog, contextual menus and a full-on Help file. Of course, you can't forget about features that are already baked in, like Reminder creation, re-ordering items within and between lists on a page and automatic syncing.

As a thoroughly satisfied customer, I highly recommend PackRat if you've been looking for a way to take your Backpack account with you. A fully-functioning demo limits you to editing 4 pages is available, while a license costs $24.95 from infiniteNIL.

  • Monday man page: dig, host & nslookup

For this week's Monday man page, it's a triple threat: dig, host, and nslookup. All three utilities are included with the BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Domain) version 9 package, part of every Mac OS X 10.4 installation, and all three do pretty much the same task: translate hostnames to IP addresses and vice versa. In 10.3.9 and earlier, the Network Utility 'lookup' tab was a front-end for nslookup, with an option via checkbox to use dig instead; starting in 10.4 the checkbox is gone and the utility is dig-only.

If you want a good introduction to how DNS works, the MacDevCenter has an excellent primer, and I can also heartily recommend DNS and BIND, possibly the most comprehensible book about a complicated subject that I've ever read. After the jump, we'll talk a bit more about how DNS lookup tools are useful, and why you might prefer one of this troika to the others.

  • Vista on the Mac

Wired Magazine's blog has a post about why Mac users may want to run Vista. Mac machines, it says, are great for running Vista, particularly with its demanding specifications. The author is a bit Wincentric, so take that into account while reading about how Vista makes OS X look "dated".

But think about it. We have Boot Camp and we have Parallels, so why put off upgrading to Vista? Being Mac users, it's far less of a risk because we can always retreat back to OS X to get the real work done if the new OS has problems. Virtual machines make it simple to try out different configurations and compartmentalize your work life--as if you owned many different computers at once. Sure, Apple's commercials may visualize "PC" as going to the hospital for major surgery to get his Vista upgrade, but for Mac users, it's as simple as adding a new virtual machine in Parallels.
