  • Apple posts Mail stationary templates galleries
We're all excited about Leopard, Apple's next major release of OS X. Steve has shown us some of the features, but Apple is keeping a pretty tight lid on everything that will be included in 10.5.

One of the features that made Steve's WWDC keynote is Stationary Templates in Mail. Basically, this makes it very easy to create snazzy HTML emails right within Mail. You can live preview templates, and drag and drop images from iPhoto. Tim Gaden points out that Apple, at some point, put up a little gallery with a bunch of the templates that will soon be unleashed upon the world.

I don't know about you, but HTML email is the bane of my existence. The first thing I do when I am configuring any email client is figure out how to convert all incoming emails to plain text. I might be a little extreme in my dislike of HTML emails, but I seriously hope that when Leopard is released

  • Apple's Norwegian troubles could increase

Norway's Ombudsman has never been a fan of Apple's DRM. We've covered this a few times here on TUAW, but it looks like things are coming to a head. It has been decided that the iTunes DRM is illegal according to Norwegian law, and now Apple has until March to change the terms until the first legal steps will be taken against Apple.

Will this signal a massive change in Apple's DRM? Or will it mean Apple leaving Norway? Only time will tell, but I can't imagine Apple will just give up on the entire European market (Norway is part of the EU).

  • How many windows do you have open right now?

Meandering through the TUAW Flickr group my eyes alighted upon this image. 'Hmm,' thought I, 'that's a lot of email in Exposé.' It got me to thinking about how I use my Mac. Tabbed browsing really has limited the number of windows I have open on my Mac, but perhaps I'm just an odd ball.

I thought it would be fun if everyone posted a picture of their currently opened windows being displayed by Exposé to the Flickr group. This totally unscientific survey would satisfy my curiosity, and I think it would be fun to boot. Here's my contribution. Yep, just three windows.

  • An Apple by any other name

I am just a simple blogger. I don't have a PhD in anything (other than Awesomeness, but I got that online for 5 bucks) nor do I spend my days locked in an Ivory Tower pondering the socioeconomic implications of the Ruble. This is why when you went to get a broader prospective on what Apple's recent name change (from Apple Computer Inc. to Apple Inc.) means you turn to train professionals.

That's just what Knowledge@Wharton did for their piece examining what Apple's name change means for consumers, and to Apple as a company. Some think that it is a tacit declaration of surrender in the PC market ('We lost the PC war, so we might as well get rid of the computer from our name') while others think that the change was made to more accurately reflect Apple's diversifying interests.

If you ask me, which you didn't, Apple is clearly devoted to computers in whatever form they may take. When you get right down to it the iPhone and the Apple TV are both just highly specialized Macs running variants of OS X. Are they computers? Are they consumer electronics? They're both, and that convergence is the market that Apple is trying to corner.

  • Commenting on TUAW gets easier as well

    Filed under:

Today we announced our new spiffy search functionality, but that's not all! Astute readers noticed that our commenting system also received an overhaul and we are quite excited about it (well, as excited as one can get about these sorts of things).

During TUAW's commenting dark ages (i.e. any time before today) you would be emailed a link to click which served to verify your comment. Recently these emails also contained a password and a promise that if you logged in with said password you would never have to verify your comments again. Sadly, this functionality wasn't fully implemented which lead to many a frustrated user. Now 'current users' can enter their email address and password (which you should get in your first comment as a new user) and never have to worry about verifying their comments again. Rejoice, and let the comments flow freely.

Three cheers for our hard working dev team!
