Harvest clocks in on the iPhone

I've tried a lot of online time-tracking solutions and have personally come to love Harvest for its simplicity, good looks and -- more than anything -- the great tools they provide to make punching in and out simple enough that people might actually do it. They've had a Dashboard widget (also available for Yahoo! Widgets) for some time which allows for insanely fast job tracking, whether entering it in post or starting and stopping a timer. You can even use Twitter from your phone to stop a running job timer if you forget. As of last Thursday, though, you can handle all of your time tracking and expense logging through a spiffy iPhone interface.

I have high hopes for the opening of the App Store and the veritable bounty that the Mac developer community will be able to offer. In the meantime, I'm really enjoying the number of highly-useful sites that are offering iPhone portals, and the companies and developers that are stepping up to provide services for a device which they must agree is not a passing fad.

The Cube lives again, sorta

Here's a clever blending of Apple past and present, in keeping with our post yesterday on Mac mini mods. Rich Willis has managed to stuff a Mac mini, an external HD, and an Airport Extreme into the clear plastic shell of an old G4 Cube.

Moving very slowly (to avoid melting the acrylic Cube case) he cut away the back of the case to give access to the various ports and then installed some acrylic supports to hold everything up. Voilà -- the Cube lives again, sorta. Rich has a gallery up that documents the entire process.

Apple #2 on the BusinessWeek Infotech 100

BusinessWeek has ranked Apple #2 on its list of the Infotech 100. This list is designed to rank tech companies on their fundamental economic strength, taking into account "shareholder return, return on equity, total revenues, and revenue growth."

Apple was up from 6th place last year and came in behind only Amazon.com. Microsoft is well back at #23; Google is #11, while HP is #30 and Dell did not even make the list. Apple's winning spell just keeps on going.
