  • 4 million iTunes songs disappear, speculations abound

Last week, Apple's iTunes Store turned 5 years old. Now the blogosphere is buzzing with the fact that Apple said they had over "10 million" songs in their library, then later changed the page to say "6 million." That's a difference of 4 million songs unaccounted for. MacNN did the math and said that if they had 10 million songs, it would have accounted for a 66% increase in their catalog in only a month. MacNN has before and after pictures of the iTunes Store page showing the changes.

So... typo? Or is Apple doing some weird shuffling of their library?

  • Hahlo 3: now out of beta

We at TUAW HQ definitely have an obsession with Twitter. We use Twitterrific for the Mac, and Hahlo for iPhone. Hahlo provides great features in a beautiful, usable user interface. A couple weeks ago we got a sneak peek at the beta of Hahlo 3 (titled "the Legendary Edition"), but now you can try it out for yourself. That's because Hahlo 3 was released to the public today. In addition to a completely revamped UI, the new version integrates full searching capabilities via Summize.

To try out Hahlo 3 for yourself, just point Mobile Safari over to http://hahlo.com. It's free and easy to use. If you don't have an iPod touch or iPhone, you can get to Hahlo from any standards-compliant modern browser (Safari 3, Firefox, etc.).

  • TUAW Best of the Week

It's the weekend. W00t! Time to kick back, relax and read the latest installment of TUAW's best of the week, where we gather up our favorite posts for your easy clicking enjoyment.

Flickr Find: Grand Theft Auto hides Apple and iPhone parody
Apple has really always been a part of popular culture, right? Well, now it's time for the iPhone to have its turn as well.

First pics of the Boston Apple Store
This is one of the newest flagship Apple Stores, being built right in the heart of Boston -- and we've got pictures. I know of at least one person that's dying to go see the Fenway Park inspired façade.

    TUAW reviews the Axiotron ModBook
We finally got our hands on the Axitron Modbook and Brett took it for a spin. Read his full review and find out more about the ModBook.

    3G iPhone to cost $199?
Like, seriously, there are enough iPhone rumors without starting new ones. What ever happened to the Mac? I remember when Apple was known for their great computers. What happened?

    The "missing" iPhone ringtone
If you've been wondering where the iPhone ringtone from the commercials is located, then look no further than your Mac. Dave shows you how to get the iPhone ringtone from the commercial.

    Speedier iMacs available
This week also brought about a slight iMac update to the current line. Speedier processors, additional memory and upgraded graphics cards abound.

AT&T offers free WiFi for iPhone users
If you own an AT&T iPhone, you just might be in luck: get free WiFi at AT&T hotspots.

    iTunes: Free Wednesday
    Grab some free tunes.

  • More iPod touch refurb love at woot.com

Update: Sold out, folks -- sorry! We'll keep an eye out for more refurb deals.

Looking to pick up a discounted, refurbished 16GB iPod touch? One-day discount vendor woot.com is offering the midrange version of the premium iPod for $290 + $5 shipping, comparing pretty favorably with Apple's refurbished sale price of $329/$349 depending on whether you get the $20 January Software Update bundled in. Judging by the description copy, the woot models don't have the update loaded, but that's still $39 cheaper than Apple's version and $79 less than a new unit, again discounting for the JSU.

Like all Woot deals, this is good for today (Saturday 5/3) only and it's valid while supplies last. Mother's Day giftgiving got you scratching your head? Need another touch as your development unit? Looking for a movie player for long car trips? Might want to pick one up. I've gotten in the habit of watching TV shows on my touch during my NYC subway commute; a 44-minute Lost is just about right for the ride. 16GB would mean less shuffling of episodes... where's that rebate stimulus check again?

    Thanks Matthew

  • Feist on Colbert: Become an iPod artist, get citizenship

Not only does being shown in an iPod commercial lead to fame and fortune for many artists, but Canadian singer Leslie Feist apparently got something else out of the deal: she got American citizenship. We have no idea how that works, but she says as much in this clip of her appearing on Stephen Colbert's show. When he mentions that she's from the Great White North, she says that she's actually a dual citizen now. Colbert asks if Steve Jobs really stepped up to make her an American and she says yes, that's pretty much how it worked: "They offered me citizenship, that was part of it."

Is she joking? Or has Jobsy actually got the ear of the government now and is giving out citizenships as part of Apple contracts? Either way, we know this: Leslie Feist rocks. We'll have her as a citizen any day, via a backroom Apple deal or otherwise.

  • iPhone dev program opened worldwide? First report!

I don't know if this is going to pan out or not, but TUAW reader Skaro (exterminate!) reports that he's been accepted into the iPhone developer program. Not a big deal until you realize that he lives in the UK and paid up his £59 fees.

If true, this is huge. Many important 3rd party Apple developers are located throughout the world. Are you an out-of-States developer who's gotten your acceptance email? Please let us know.

  • Google releases Visigami, open source image browser

The guys over at the Google Mac blog have dropped a new little open source application called Visigami, which serves as a more "interesting" and "fun" way to browse and play around with images online. Basically, after installing the app, you can then pull in pics from Picasa, Google Images, or Flickr (iPhoto is just a suggestion so far), and then search, animate, zoom in or out on them, and even turn them right into a screensaver.

It's a pretty neat little application -- not exactly the kind of thing that anyone has probably been hoping for (it seems more fun than utilitarian), but if you find yourself often browsing photos online, this definitely seems like a more fun way to do it. And it's one more reason to praise all the great developers working on our platform -- it's little apps like this that make the Mac user experience so much better.

  • MIT uses Macs to learn how children gain speech skills

Apple's Science page has a profile up for the folks over at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology -- apparently two MITers, Deb Roy and Rupal Patel, are using Macs, including "five Apple Xserves and a 4.4TB Xserve RAID," to record and track every single moment of their son's early childhood.

Not only are they assured to get his first few steps on tape, but they're also studying early development and how young children gain the skills to interact with other human beings. In order to do this, they're dealing with huge amounts of audio and video data -- about 250TB. And they're also building an analysis application on the platform called TotalRecall to scan through all the audio and video and pick out interesting parts and patterns (creating the kind of image seen above -- apparently that means something to them).

Of course, there is one thing they do that Apple can't -- when the time came to figure out how to transfer 200GB a day from the home environment to work, they eventually settled on a "sneakernet" approach, packing up the digital tapes in a case and carrying them to work. Here's hoping Apple will announce their own proprietary version of iSneakernet at the next WWDC (with a stylish design and a reasonable pricetag, of course).

  • PC Safari use triples despite backlash

Despite the recent uproar over Apple's debatably dubious tactic of installing Safari on PCs via Software Update, as an "upgrade" to software users didn't have, the tactic seems to have worked. Usage of the Windows version of the browser has tripled since the 3.1 update, per Apple 2.0's report, growing from 0.07% to 0.21% during March and April.

We're hoping that Safari usage continues to expand, but perhaps without the Software Update shenanigans (and the UI for updates on the Windows side has been revised to reduce the likelihood of accidental Safariage). CSS compatibility and speed put Safari in a class to compete with Firefox on both Mac and PC platforms. Of course, those all-important features don't determine marketshare; being bundled with Windows installs seems to do the trick, though (see Internet Explorer). We have our doubts that Microsoft is going to incorporate Safari into its bundling plans any time soon.

  • "McAfee" iPhone antivirus app is from McAfee but not meant for public

Update 9:45 ET: Kudos to McAfee's media relations team, burning the late-Friday oil to help us make some sense of this story. Here's the official comment from Joris Evers, director of worldwide PR for the antivirus vendor:

The application you blogged about is indeed a genuine McAfee project. We are always working on new platforms including the popular ones. In this particular case we were running a test to validate some recently developed technology. We happen to be first to test AV technology for iPhone. We're happy that iPhone users are already getting excited about it, as evidenced by your blog and the thousands of people who are trying out the application. Still, we are not ready to announce a new product, our development work is in the early stages.

    Update 8:45 ET
: In a "curiouser and curiouser" twist, we have some new info from McAfee on the iPhone AV application... which was indeed developed at McAfee, contrary to our earlier reports from their press representative. Here's what else has been confirmed:
    • The 'Stinger' mobile AV tool for iPhone is an internal project that somehow "got into the wild." It was not intended for release (indeed, since it was developed with the community toolchain, it would have to be rebuilt for the SDK).
    • They are happy with the positive feedback they're getting from users.
    • It was a proof of concept. They have no idea if they'll follow through with an actual product.
    • Corporate and consumer offices are in adjacent cities, which explains the domain registration issue.
As we get additional details and some hands-on time with the tool we will update further.
    ---

Talk about things that make you go "huh." TUAW reader "Ghost" sent in a tip pointing us to this WinAndMac post about new native iPhone antivirus software from McAfee. Antivirus software? For the iPhone? Something didn't smell right so I put in a call to Francie Coulter, VP of McAfee's Consumer Public Relations.

Francie told me that to the best of her knowledge, this iPhone AV tool was not a genuine McAfee project. She is checking around to be sure and promises to get back in touch. Unfortunately, as far as TUAW can tell, this is not legitimate. The 'mcafeemobile.com' domain WHOIS points to a Sunnyvale, CA address but the company's offices are actually in Santa Clara; it's possible that the mobile R&D group is located in a different place, and the phone number matches up, but that's thin evidence either way. The iPhone app might be an innocent demo, or it may contain malware. There's a hackintosh thread up now, and several folks are discussing the relative likelihood of the tool being either legit or malicious. We suggest you use caution and avoid downloading the app, pending a definitive story from McAfee one way or the other.

SyncMan is a simple application for syncing your Mac's Address Book with your Gmail contacts, a feature long desired by Gmail and Google Calendar users who may have other sync tools already in place. While we have noted that a similar feature is forthcoming in the more broad-based iCal syncing tool Spanning Sync 2, SyncMan concentrates just on contacts and is available now.
