- Spotting celebs with the iPhone
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Humor, Odds and ends, Apple, iPhone
Obama and Lindsay Lohan are far from the only people rocking the iPhone lately -- a new site called "Coolspotters" claims to track brands and the celebrities that use them, and the iPhone is pretty cool lately. 32 celebrities have been spotted -- everyone from Mike Tyson to Heidi Klum to Rose McGowan (pictured, though that really could be anyone, couldn't it?). In fact, the Apple iPhone is actually the most popular product on the site right now -- one spot above something called the Omnipeace t-shirt (yes, but does it have a multitouch screen?), and two spots above the MacBook Air.
Because everyone knows you need a site to tell you that what you own is cool, right? Of course, they are cheating a little bit -- I don't think the fact that Steve Jobs is using something necessarily makes it cool. Otherwise, we'd all have seen celebs toting around Newtons.
Still, if seeing celebs use the same product you have is your thing, the iPhone's got you covered there, too. Can't say it influenced my purchase much, but good to see that the rich and famous are catching on to what's been TUAW's favorite tech-cessory for a while.

Переслать - ZDNet: Benchmarking the Psystar Open Computer
Filed under: Desktops, Open Source
It's a big day for the Psystar Open Computer -- the quasi-Mac clone based on PC hardware and a cracked version of Mac OS X. ZDNet today published their comparison of the Open Computer with a Mac mini, and all three flavors of MacBook. The results? The Open Computer fares pretty well against all of its Mac cousins. It scored nearly 147 with Xbench 1.3.
It beats the Mac mini, its closest price competitor, by nearly 50 percent. The Open Computer outperforms even a MacBook Pro (with a 2.4GHz Penryn processor) by 10 points. Not too shabby at all, if you can stand the sound of a jet airplane on your desk (Just kidding. Apparently the noise isn't too bad).
ZDNet promises results using GeekBench soon.

Переслать - Another iPhone in the 3G wall: AT&T limits purchasers to one phone
Filed under: iPhone
While the Inuit people of Alaska and Canada probably don't have more than a dozen words for snow (rather than the hundreds attributed to their language), it seems to me that we're well into the century mark for different ways of saying "the iPhone 3G is right around the corner." Today's example of iPhonius FirstGenerationic Obsoletum comes from Boy Genius Report, which reprints an urgent email to AT&T Retail staffers: no more than 1 iPhone per customer, please.
If availability constraints around the globe, the reappearance of refurb devices and the steady drumbeat of rumors wasn't enough for you, well, here you go. Those who were planning to pick up a bushelful of iPhones at firesale prices will now have to go in disguise.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
Переслать - Apple posts podcast on Leopard Server
Filed under: Enterprise, OS, iTunes, Leopard
Here's something for all you IT pros out there. Apple has released a video podcast that offers a quick tour of Mac OS X Leopard Server [iTunes link].
There are two episodes available now; "Setup and Administration" and "Managing Your Server." Each features a screencast walk-through of some basic tasks, as well as as a monotone and articulate host in the standard issue black mock turtleneck.
Seasoned Mac OS X Server administrators will find the content pretty basic, but still enjoyable. If you're considering Leopard Server for your work group or small business, these videos are a nice introduction. When you're ready to join the ranks of Mac OS X Server pros, swing by afp548.com and macenterprise.org for additional webcasts and training resources.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
Переслать - WWDC 2008 sold out, scalpers on alert
Filed under: WWDC, Apple, Developer
With apologies to Carole King: "Now it's too late, bayyybeee, now it's too late, though we really did try to make it..."
If you were waiting until the last minute to get your reservations in for Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, aka WWDC 2008, you're out of luck. All available spaces at Apple's annual developer love-fest have been taken, so you'll have to wait until next year's event to get your fix of sessions and labs.
That also means you're going to miss out on the Steve Jobs keynote address, which you'll hear about within minutes of it happening anyway. Don't procrastinate for WWDC 2009!
Thanks to Chris C. for the tip!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
Переслать - Boston's Tech Superpowers buries a treasure for Apple
Filed under: Humor, Retail, Apple History
This is my favorite story of the week. Major League Baseball fans probably remember the New York construction worker who buried a David Oritz jersey underneath the New York Yankees stadium in an attempt to jinx the team. It seems he unwittingly started a trend.
On Thursday, Apple's newest retail store will open in Boston with a small gift from neighboring store Tech Superpowers buried underneath the sidewalk.
Back in April, Michael Oh (Tech Superpowers founder and president) crossed the street to the Apple Store's construction site with a shovel and one of his company's T-Shirts. A short time later, the shirt was buried underneath the concrete, where it remains today. Since the story of the Ortiz jersey was breaking at the time, the members of the construction crew thought the idea was funny, and let him do his thing.
Oh points out that he isn't trying to jinx the store, but create a connection between the two retailers.
"We're doing it with a wink ... We are in business because of the great things Apple has done ... This T-shirt in the sidewalk is a symbol that there's a connection between the two sides of the alley." It was Oh who set up the Boston Apple Store Webcam at ifoAppleStore to share the construction process with Apple fans everywhere.
We can only imagine what's next

- Dunkin Donuts leaves a bag of French Vanilla under each new Starbucks

Переслать - Beta Beat: IntelliScreen for iPhone
Filed under: iPod Family, Beta Beat, iPhone
Really cool stuff today over at ModMyiPhone. The new IntelliScreen software customizes your "Slide to Unlock" screen allowing you to load widgets onto that otherwise unusued space. Options include listing calendar events, mail subjects, SMS messages, weather reports and RSS news feeds.
One note though about beta releases: We love them for the inspiration and early access. We hate them for causing possible endless reboot sequences. This release may cause fatal rebooting errors so proceed with care.
Thanks, Jonathan.

Переслать - AT&T offers up refurb iPhones
We love you anonymous tipster! Thanks for letting us know about these insanely good iPhone refurb deals direct from AT&T. I bought one of these up last time round. This time, you can pick up a 16 GB iPhone for just $349 or an 8GB for only $249. Free shipping and a full one year warranty (Be sure to check out our previous post about checking your warranty coverage).
And yes, you can use one of these babies to get yourself set up with that $240/year unlimited data plan I wrote about.
If you don't plan to set up a new account, hacktivation using iLiberty+ or one of those zithings will be required. Caveat hackteur.

Переслать - Scanning wallet cards into the iPhone
Filed under: Software, Hacks, Tips and tricks, Odds and ends, iPhone
This is pretty much genius. Like Albert, I have a bunch of "membership cards" in my wallet -- they're those cards with a barcode or number on them that you get from places like the local grocery store, or some other retailer. They're useful to have around, but they tend to pile up after a while, and pretty soon, your wallet gets to be a brick of barcodes rather than anything you'd actually want to carry around in your pocket. Albert's solution was to scan all of his barcodes into the iPhone, front and back, as an iPhoto album. And lo and behold, just like the paperless boarding passes we posted about a while back, it worked. All of the barcodes were scannable, which means no more countless membership cards -- just a gallery in your iPhone.
We've already heard of barcodes reading both on and off of the iPhone, of course, and we'll hopefully see more of this when the SDK drops in just about a month here (maybe, in the future, someone will write an app to generate barcodes from numbers, so you don't even need to get a clear scan). But even without an external app, this is pretty handy solution to clearing up some of the clutter in your wallet. Obviously, for anything important (driver's license, credit cards), an iPhone scan won't do. But just to get the membership prices down at the Jewel-Osco, scanning wallet cards into an iPhone seems to work just fine. Very nice.

Переслать - TUAW Faceoff: Screencasting
Filed under: Software, Features, TUAW Faceoff
Screencasting -- the not-so-ancient art of recording the computer screen for the entertainment and enrichment of others -- has evolved into quite a Hydra of options. How do the myriad gladiators in this arena stack up? I've tried everything I could find that could record a little movement on the screen, and selected 8 contenders for the matchup. We'll start this boxing match off with the free apps, and then see if the "money" apps stack enough features on to make them worth the cash.

Переслать - Macworld offers up new rules for Mac buying
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Hardware
Buying a new Mac is often a complicated business. Sure, there are only a few models to choose from, but do you need a laptop or a desktop? Can you get away with a consumer machine, or do you need to spend the money and get one of Apple's pro offerings? These are not easy questions to answer, but there have long been some simple 'rules' of Mac buying. Macworld takes a look at the current Mac landscape and offers up some updates for those rules of yore.
Take a look at the article, and you might find that the Mac you think you need isn't the Mac that you really need.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
Переслать - Poll: Would you buy a 12" MacBook Pro?
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Hardware, Portables, PowerBook, Surveys and Polls, Macbook Pro, MacBook
Up until a few years ago, I had a 12" PowerBook G4 that I absolutely loved. It was truly portable (although the screen was a bit on the small side for me), relatively fast, and lightweight. Many of my consulting clients have asked if Apple had plans to replace the 12" PowerBook with a MacBook or MacBook Pro in the same form factor, but I've pointed them towards the 13" MacBook or MacBook Air instead.
There's still a vocal group of former PowerBook G4 users who would like to see Apple come out with a new MacBook Pro -- complete with SuperDrive, Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and Multi-Touch trackpad -- in that tiny 12" PowerBook case. If you're in their camp, visit and participate in the MBP12.com forum and add your voice to the people clamoring for a small, powerful MacBook Pro.
Do you think a 12" MacBook Pro would be a winner in the market? Take our poll!

Переслать - Vidnik: Record video directly from your iSight to YouTube
Filed under: Multimedia, Software, Video, Open Source
Thinking about starting a video blog? Good luck. But if you're sure about this, the cool folks over at Google Mac have created an extremely useful tool to help you get your very own DIY reality show started.
Vidnik (0.13.0 beta) is an Apache-licensed app that allows you to record video from your iSight and upload it directly to YouTube. You can title, tag, categorize and add a description to the videos right from within the app itself. Above you can see why I don't vidblog. Nobody wants to look at that.

Developer David Phillip Oster says that there's a small bug currently that makes the sound lag a fraction of a second behind the video when uploaded to YouTube, but he knows what the problem is and he's solving it quickly.
