  • iDMG

If you have ever created a DMG image using Disk Utility, you know how hard it can be. iDMG hopes to make this process easier. This application allows you to easily drag and drop files, applications, or whatever you choose onto iDMG, select a few options and hit the "Create button."

The only downside to the application is the many times you encounter the slow "I am working" message. Other than that, this application offers a bunch of options like encryption, custom icons, and multiple file systems. In addition, iDMG uses the Sparkle update framework and Growl notifications.

This application is available for download as freeware (donations accepted) from the developer's website.

  • SIMBL plugin woes after 10.5.3?

Did you get home only to find that Mac OS X 10.5.3 had been released today? Well, just as some users were unpacking and installing the shiny new update, issues with SIMBL plug-ins were discovered. If you have SIMBL plugins installed, then you may have an error show up when you try to launch an application. Past updates on systems with these plugins installed have been known to run into some issues.

If you are experiencing plugin predicaments, there is a way to fix the problem. SIMBL plugins (or other, non-SIMBL InputManager plugins, which may also be problematic) can be installed in any one of the following directories:
    • ~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/
    • /Library/InputManagers/
    • ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items/
    • ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
    • ~/Library/InputManagers/
When you see the error in an application, just jot down the name of the plugin and look in those directories for it. When you find the plugin, just move it to a separate folder or toss it into the trash can. The application launch problem should cease.

Have you experienced plug-in issues since installing the 10.5.3 update? If so, tell us about it in the comments.

  • 10.5.3 and Beta 6 SDK, Oh my!

Something interesting is hiding in 10.5.3. I don't know what it is. I don't know what it does. But if it's necessary to upgrade if you want to use the new SDK release, that means that there's a something that ties 10.5.3 to new iPhone features.

So intrepid TUAW readers-slash-detectives, what can you find lurking in that new 10.5.3 firmware release that provides new and exciting iPhone functionality? Let us know in the comments.

My completely wild pulling-it-from-the-posterior guess is something to do with AppStore support -- or maybe the iNewton -- or maybe "back to my iPhone" support -- or... No really, I have no clue. Hopefully Uncle Steve will give us something nice for Keynotemas. Until then, see if you can figure it out.

  • iTunes Video Stores coming to France

    Filed under:

Over at MacGeneration, Christophe Laporte and his friends have discovered a nearly-live French iTunes Video Store. If you'd like to check it out yourself, search the store for "desperate" and click on Les Saisons TV.

France will join the UK and Germany with transatlantic video stores. Episode pricing falls between €1,99 and €2,49, which is pretty steep given the strength of the Euro. More details and pictures are here.

  • 10.5.3: Sync your iPhone contacts with Google

If you have an iPhone synced with Address Book.app, then you've been able to sync your contacts with Yahoo for a while now, but something that has been missing is Google sync. Sure, you can always use Spanning Sync, but we all want something free and built-into the OS. Well, those dreams are now true according to a new Google blog post and the introduction of Mac OS X 10.5.3.

On the Mac you normally sync your iPhone with, you will see a new option when you open the "General" tab in Address Book preferences. When you check "Synchronize with Google" you can enter your Google credentials and syncing will proceed. Apple and Google did leave some people out, however, as this new feature works only on Macs that have an iPhone synced with iTunes.

    Thanks, Nathan and Ryan!

  • temper4iPhone emulates Turbografx-16 on the iPhone

The guys at Touch Arcade are at it again -- this time, ZodTTD has ported temper, a TurboGrafx-16 emulator, to the iPhone, and as you can see above, this means something amazing: Bonk on the touchscreen. Sounds like the audio has a few little glitches, but seems like the controls and graphics are working as well as could be asked -- even in the slower Landscape mode (with the controls overlaid on the graphics), he says it was pulling about 50FPS.

There's even an emulator for the TurboGrafx-16 CD PC Engine, as long as you do a little tweaking (and nab the bios from somewhere that may or may not be legal -- same for the ROMs). temper4iPhone is still in beta, and just like all of these other emulators and jailbreak apps, we have no clue at all whether we'll ever get the chance to see them on the (rapidly approaching) App Store. Still, it's awesome to see -- we've definitely come a long way from the NES emulator way back when.

  • CAC for Mac

    Filed under:

For government and military employees, your Common Access Card (CAC) is your link to secure computers and networked resources. It features an encrypted form of credential on a smart chip located on the card.

Thursby Software has updated ADmitMac for CAC, which securely integrates Macs with the CAC architecture. ADmitMac authorizes users for a particular workstation, allows them access to network resources using secure SMB connections, and locks the workstation when the CAC is removed.

On the server side, ADmitMac works with Mac OS X Workgroup Manager to fully support Managed Desktop environments with no schema changes. It also allows for full printer sharing.

The software requires a compatible CAC reader, and Mac OS X 10.4. The software is $199, and volume discounts are available.

  • Found footage: 20th Anniversary Mac intro video

Earlier this week, we pointed out an unboxing video of a pristine 20th Anniversary Mac. Of course, they're underpowered by today's standards, but many Apple collectors love them. To find one still sealed in its original factory box is a rare indeed.

During the video, we got a look at the obnoxious introductory QuickTime that shipped with these things, which begins, "There are some things in life which capture one's soul." Capture my soul? You mean the TAM is a ghost trap?

Check out the fancy CG graphics, self-important narration and the glinting TAM itself. Many thanks to propstoyou22 for sending us the video.

  • First Look: Equinux Tube Stick Hybrid

When it comes to Macintosh TV tuners, it's hard to ignore the very large cat sitting in the corner. Elgato dominates the US market, but in Europe Equinux has been a big player and they've recently crossed the ocean with a new US-compatible tuner. The TubeStick Hybrid with its "The Tube" software arrives at a distinct disadvantage.

It's a small white box that you can attach to a spare USB port and use to watch channels both from over-the-air signals or connect to your cable TV. Equinux provides the software that turns the tuned data into a watch-able show on your screen.

The product and its software remains at a stage I can best describe as "beta". Yes, you can watch TV with it. Yes, you can tune to both ATSC (High Def) and analog channels. But many features like integrated TV listings are not yet available for the US. You're able to import your own Extended Programming Guide listings in XMLTV format, and Equinux recommends SchedulesDirect.org.

Follow the jump to read more about the Equinux Tube Stick Hybrid.

  • MacBook Air: dangerous weapon?

Engadget has a silly, but mildly humorous post up on a German MacBook Air user who claims his elbow was sliced open by the sharp front edge of the Air. In addition to his sliced up elbow (bis aufs Fleisch!), he says that his couch was ruined by all the blood. Just what we need, another reason for the TSA to ban the Air: it's a deadly weapon.

So Air owners out there, have any of you been attacked by your ultraportable Mac?

Update: As one of our commenters pointed out this story was generated by a mistaken translation. The guy's elbow was cut by a regular MacBook, not an Air.

  • Espy: lovechild of iPhoto and Address Book

Espy is an Address Book replacement that focusses on pictures rather than names. Basically it capitalizes on the fact that many folks remember faces a lot better than they remember names. The interface blends an iPhoto-like photo browser with Address Book contact info. Espy is compatible with the OS X Address Book and works with Mail.app, etc.

While the basic idea of organizing contacts by photo is not bad, I can't help but observe that the hard part is going to be getting all the pictures. I try to keep photos of my contacts in the Address Book, but except for good friends this is often a challenge. It's a bit of a catch-22 since the people whose names I'm more likely to forget (and so benefit from something like Espy) are also the people I'm less likely to have pictures of.

In any case, Espy is $24.95 and a demo is available.

  • Orange to trade up iPhones?

According to Boy Genius Report, French iPhone carrier Orange may be offering current iPhone users a 3G iPhone for €30 €50 (thanks to kol and jaxx for pointing out my typo!) if they trade in their old iPhone, as well as "generous subsidies" for users who wish to upgrade and keep their current handset.

The news comes from reader tips to French tech site PCInpact, though Orange apparently has no official statement yet.

We can just add this to the number of other 3G iPhone rumors that have been swirling as of late.

  • iFund taken out for a Whrrl

    Filed under:

At the iPhone SDK event back in March one of the most curious announcements was the existence of the $100 million iFund. Famed silicon valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers established it to "fund innovators developing applications, services, and components for Apple's iPhone and iPod touch platform." Now BusinessWeek is reporting the first two public iFund recipients: Whrrl and iControl.

Whrrl is a kind of location based social networking service that allows you to "discover places, movies, and events by seeing where your friends are going." You can read (and leave) reviews of stores, restaurants, etc. Unfortunately, it's limited to 17 metro areas but they say new cities are being added regularly.

iControl produces home monitoring and control products. So your iPhone would allow you to control home automation products (e.g. climate system, lighting, etc.) as well as monitor in home cameras and other security systems.

Kleiner Perkins reports receiving over 1700 applications for the iFund and in addition to these two has made an offer to another, as yet undisclosed, startup. They are "seriously considering another 10."
