- Andrea Jung joins Apple board
Today, Andrea Jung joined Apple's Board of Directors. Jung is currently the chairman and CEO of Avon. She graduated from Princeton University, and also serves on the board of directors for the General Electric Company, and is on the board of trustees for New York Presbyterian Hospital.
"Andrea is a strong CEO and marketer and we look forward to benefiting from her insights and experience as a member of Apple's board," said Steve Jobs, today.
Jung is the eighth member of Apple's board of directors. As you may recall, the last member to join the board was Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google. Apple has recently come under fire about their perceived lack of diversity in the upper offices; this is a definite start to ending those comments. The current board of directors is made up of:
- Bill Campbell (Chairman and former CEO, Intuit Corp.)
- Millard Drexler (Chairman and CEO, J. Crew)
- Albert Gore Jr. (Former Vice President of the United States)
- Steve Jobs (CEO, Apple, Inc.)
- Andrea Jung (Chairman and CEO, Avon Products)
- Arthur D. Levinson, Ph. D. (Chairman and CEO, Genentech)
- Dr. Eric Schmidt (CEO, Google)
- Jerry York (Chairman, President and CEO Harwinton Capital)

Filed under: Macworld, Steve Jobs, Apple History
We had fun talking about our favorite moments from Macworld keynotes during last night's talkcast. From the Big Brother moment in Boston to Steve dropping the S-Bomb in 1997 (twice!).
Today, we've compiled the best videos we could find into a single post. Behold the Ghost of Macworld Past, and enjoy the nostalgia.
- Steve announces Apple's partnership with Macworld, Bill Gates appears. Observe how hesitant Steve is to begin this segment of the keynote and the stunned crowd's reaction. Do you think it was a coincidence that Bill's appearance on the big screen was so similar to the 1984 ad? Don't bet on it.
- The introduction of the iMac. This is my favorite Macworld memory, as it's the moment that "saved" Apple. That round, plastic design became iconic, and you know the rest.
- Noah Wyle appears as Steve Jobs. Fresh from playing Steve in The Pirates of Silicon Valley, Noah took a break from the ER set to briefly play Steve on stage at the start of the scheduled keynote. Watch Steve chastise him for not opening a bottle of water before beginning to speak.
- The introduction of the iBook. Remember "iMac to go?" Oh, how I wanted one of these.
- Steve introduces Mac OS X. I didn't see the public beta of Mac OS X, so I was floored by this presentation. I bought 10.0 the day is was made available.
- Mac OS 9's funeral (WWDC 2002). So long, extension conflicts, system freezes and Platinum Sounds. We'll miss you. Kind of.
- Steve plays the 1984 ad in public for the first time. I think this is his best speech ever. The insane crowd reaction gives me goosebumps.
- The introduction of the iPod (Special media event). I clearly remember thinking, "An Mp3 player? We're supposed to be all excited over an Mp3 player?!?" What do I know?
- The introduction of the Macintosh (Shareholder's meeting). Another great moment. Watch the crowd lose their collective minds when the tiny Mac "talks." Hey Steve, nice bow tie.

Here's a task that most computer users run into on a daily basis: cropping and dealing with small image tweaks. This could be a daunting task if it were not for the Mac and Automator. In this how-to, I will show you how to make a small Finder plug-in that will allow you to manipulate images quickly. Please note, some of the actions required for this how-to are dependent upon Pixelmator being installed.
For this automation, you will need the following Automator actions (in the same order):
- Get Selected Finder Items
- Transform Images (this action is only available when you install Pixelmator)

Lots of readers have written in asking about the status of Growl, the very popular global notification program that we have covered in the past. For the last three or four days, the Growl website has been down, as has access to the SVN. Because both MacUpdate and Versiontracker direct their download link directly to the Growl servers, users attempting to download the application have been out of luck. What's going on?
Perusing the Google Groups set-up for the program, the developers report that because their old server was retired and taken down, they are in the process of setting up new hosting and getting the site and the SVN back online. Earlier this morning, lead developer for the project posted a message to the Cocoaforge Growl forum indicating that he should have time to start working on the process tonight. Please note, that does not mean Growl will be back up and running tonight - just that the process may start-up. Setting up new hosting and transferring the SVN over can be a tedious process, so I suggest users just remain patient - I'm sure the developers will be back up and running as soon as possible.
If anyone absolutely has to have Growl now, I believe that Adium 1.2 comes with it as part of the installer (if so enabled). For information on the status of the site, I recommend checking out the Google Group and Cocoaforge forum for updates.

Filed under: iPod Family, Security, iPhone
So while I was gone off, enjoying the wild wonders of Arizona, seems like a big kerfuffle tumulted, disturbed, and then resolved. Mike Rose just dropped me an IM, asking whether the whole "Mikey" thing meant that the iPhone was especially susceptible to malicious influences. Was this the canary in the coal mine? Are bad things coming down the road iPhone-wise?
In my opinion? Not so much. This bad patch showed more that users could be quick to respond and capable of handling flackitude than that the iPhone was a particularly vulnerable platform. Less harm was done by Mikey the 11 year old than by the whole recent QuickBooks debacle.
It's a given when one computes that bad things happen. Some harm is intentional, some not. What we saw at play here, and is especially obvious in retrospect, was a quick community response. The strong network of Apple/iPhone enthusiasts got the message out and acted with precision and decisiveness. Well done, guys.

Remember I wrote about that bunch of undocumented SpringBoard prefs? Ecamm has grabbed the bull by the horns (or possibly by the implanted iPod dock) and produced "Caption Crunch", a simple utility that adds a custom message to your iPhone using the fake time preferences.
Caption Crunch works by modding the com.apple.springboard.plist file that gets stored on your personal computer in the backup files and actually talks to your iPhone and convinces it to upload a new copy of the prefs file. The iPhone will perform a "pseudo restore" and may reboot. I tested on an iPod touch and it worked great.
Cool stuff indeed--but even cooler that Ecamm seems to have taken Mac/iPhone communication up to a new level. No Jailbreak necessary.

Filed under: Macworld, Cult of Mac, Blogging, Steve Jobs, Apple, One More Thing
With just over a week to go until the Steve JobsJanuary RiotMacworld Keynote and mockups of desired Apple products flying at us, Ars Technica's John Siracusa has posted his definitive Macworld Keynote Bingo card. Complete with that immortal Jobs-ian catch-phrase "Boom" and "a few squares for the phone weenies," it's everything you need for the keynote guessing-game.
Be sure to check out the rules and regulations to see what will tick off each square -- we'd hate for any keynote attendees to jump up and shout "Bingo!" only to find that their line isn't really valid. That would be embarrassing, wouldn't it?Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Humor, iPod Family, Other Events
This is yet another bonanza year of the iPod-docking-station compatible device if early reports from CES are to be believed. New docking solutions include jack-equipped cars, digital photo frames, iPod-compatible pacemakers, genetically modified cattle with horn-implanted docks, wearable dockware, iPod-compatible beer, and so forth. Or something like that. I got a little bored reading through today's press releases and may have embellished a bit.
Actually, the iPod-compatible news from CES this year is a bit on the slim side. After last year's Macworld-CES head-to-head grudge match, CES seems to have realized this year that it doesn't produce all that much in the way of interesting Apple-related news.
