- DiscTop
Filed under: Software, Odds and ends, Freeware
This is probably one of the coolest freeware applications on the Mac that I've seen in a while. Have you ever placed a disc in your Mac's drive, only to shut it down with the disc still in there? I know I have a couple of times. Now you will never do that again, thanks to DiscTop. When you load a CD or DVD into your Mac, DiscTop displays a disc-like icon on the desktop, letting you know that you currently have a disc inserted. When you eject the disc, the icon zooms off the screen.
The coolest thing about DiscTop is that when you insert a known DVD (say, The Simpsons Movie) you can set the artwork via an Amazon search and display it over top of the DVD icon. DiscTop even asks you what type of Mac you use and then positions the disc accordingly. For instance, I have an iMac Core Duo (early 2006 model), so when I use that profile DiscTop will make sure the disc's icon is positioned where the optical drive is located. Very cool!
If you want to give DiscTop a spin it's freeware and available at the developers website.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Portables, How-tos, Macbook Pro, TUAW Tips, MacBook
Although I can be a bit of a slob, I'm pretty anal retentive when it comes to keeping my electronics clean. That goes triple for my MacBook. Although I was pretty scrupulous with my last laptop, the glossy screen and black casing that shows all have required me to become even more attentive. Even though I don't have people touching my screen all the time, I manage to accumulate build up of fingerprints, smudges and dust marks (most likely from the keyboard) that require giving the screen a full cleaning every week.
The Apple Blog has posted some some great tips/techniques for keeping your screen looking like new, and while they are directed for glossy screen owners, the same basic techniques can be used for any screen, be it iPod/iPhone, matte LCD screen (like on a MacBook Pro or older Apple laptop), iMac, etc.
The key is getting the right type of cleaning solution an the right type of cleaning cloth. The author of the tips article recommends using monitor wipes from some sort of Office supply store, but I've found that unless you get individually sealed one-time use wipes (which can get expensive), the wipes tend to dry out very, very quickly, effectively making them useless. I prefer to use cleaning product like iKlear or a home-made 50/50 solution of isopropyl alcohol and bottled water. 99% of all electronics cleaners out there are essentially diluted isopropyl alcohol (add blue dye and some fragrance and ammonia and you have Windex -- don't use Windex on your screen).
As for the right kind of cloth, you want to use a lint-free microfiber lens cloth (it will be slightly textured as opposed to a smooth microfiber cloth that you use for polishing/cleaning an iPod or digital camera screen, you can use a smooth microfiber cloth, but I have had much better results with the more textured ultra-suede cloths for laptop screens).
Now for the actual cleaning:Continue reading Keeping your screen clean

An optimized version of iGoogle is now available for iPhone users. iGoogle, which can be customized to display RSS feeds, news on a variety of topics, crossword puzzles, weather maps, online tetris, etc. The iPhone optimized version lists all feeds and gadgets in one column (and if the TestiPhone.com site is to be believed, content is scaled to the screen) and you can select individual tabs at the bottom of the page (very similar to the traditional iGoogle set-up). The iGoogle iPhone address is http://www.google.com/ig/i and it is a significant improvment over the US-only Google Mobile page.

Filed under: Freeware, Software Update, Leopard
We covered FlickrBooth a while back, when it was first released. FlickrBooth is a plug-in for Apple's PhotoBooth that allows you to instantly upload your creations to Flickr after taking the snapshot. The best thing about FlickrBooth 1.2 is that it now runs on Leopard. Some of the new features include:
- Automatic photo uploading now strips .jpg from the title
- SIMBL updated to 0.8.2
- Growl updated to 1.1.2

The awards continue to roll in for Apple. Earlier this week, the editors at InfoWorld named Mac OS X "Best Operating System," and the MacBook Pro the "Best Notebook Computer."
Today, a panel at .Net Magazine have identified Apple.com's recent makeover as their "Redesign of the Year." Remember the Aqua-style tabs that graced the top of the pages for so long? They disappeared in a redesign last year that made the whole site more closely resemble their product line.
The panel at .Net commented on the online Apple Store in particular, saying, "...the store is the one that's furthest ahead in terms of design and the markup behind it."
That's nice, because a lot of people will be looking at the store in a few days.

Just when you thought there wasn't anything more we could bring you about Macworld in advance of the show, it turns out that there's another fact-let for your wandering Mac-minds to compute. Ars Technica has published the first photos from the Moscone Center setup work-in-progress. Caught in the sneaky snaps is a banner simply reading "2008. There's something in the air." -- admittedly not at all revealing.
Perhaps Steve's levitating office chair, or floating Jobs-pod is being revealed. Or maybe we made those two things up. Either way, we've already posted our predictions for Macworld so we'll let you get back to whatever you may, or may not, be doing to shut out the impending keynote until next week.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Cool tools, Open Source
This month's MacTech magazine offers a feature article by Edward Marczak on using dsh, the "dancer's shell" or distributed shell utility, to batch-administer machines in a single blast without having to hit each one, or use a pricey management tool such as ARD or LANrev. Although dsh isn't included with Mac OS X or available as a binary or port build, it does compile cleanly on the Mac and should work well out of the box.
The idea behind dsh is to take a list of targets (machines you can reach via SSH), and run a command or extended script on all of them at once. This is functionality that's wrapped up in a nice GUI in Apple Remote Desktop; it's deeply powerful and very handy. Supposing you wanted to check the uptime for a bunch of your lab boxes -- manually, you'd have to run around, or SSH to each one and run the 'uptime' command. With dsh, you make your machine list (optionally, loading your SSH public key on the machines ahead of time to avoid password prompts) and run one command:dsh -Ma uptime
Very handy. The full article isn't online yet, but it's worth seeking out a copy of the magazine if you're interested in automation of enterprise Mac admin tasks.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Yesterday we shared some tips for preparing yourself for Macworld. Today, Joy of Tech adds one more must-have to the list: The Macworld Celebrity Checklist!
Carry it around with you and use a marker to check off Steve, Woz, Uncle Walt, Andy Ihnatko (and his hat)...even The Reality Distorted Geek (warning: this could be you), The Schwag Whore and The Guy Who Still Runs Mac OS 8 (I used to work with that guy).
We can't help but wonder why there's no TUAW love on the list. Just look for the Hawaiian shirt.

US-CERT and Information Week are reporting a new vulnerability in QuickTime's handling of RTSP streams, which has been demonstrated to crash QuickTime Player on Windows and may also affect the Mac version. See the writeup by researcher Luigi Auriemma, who first announced the flaw.
Unlike the RTSP bug patched in QuickTime 7.3.1 last month, this vector works by overflowing an HTTP error buffer sent when the RTSP port 554 is closed on the malicious server, and the QuickTime client tries to switch to port 80. Sneaky.
Since we're almost certain to see iTunes 7.6 and possibly QuickTime 7.3.2 at Macworld anyway, expect another rev of QuickTime to close this hole after those versions ship -- since Apple wasn't notified in advance of this hole, it's unlikely to be caught in the pending updates, as commenter Nicholas points out (unless Apple found the vector independently).Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

A reader tipped us off to this very cool new interface for Quicksilver called Showcase from Julius Eckert. It's basically pure eye-candy, but what eye-candy it is! Taking its cue from Cover Flow it leverages Leopards Core Animation technologies to, er, showcase Leopard's graphical goodness. While I'm not entirely sure it's practical in the long run, Showcase is definitely a fun addition to Quicksilver in Leopard.
Thanks panpot!

Our blog brothers over at Engadget point to this interesting new device from Belkin at CES. The Podcast Studio basically turns your iPod classic into a mobile voice recording studio. It has a built-in mic, but more interestingly features 1/4" and XLR mic jacks for using more serious external microphones. It also has gain controls and a built in compressor/limiter to help voice recordings sound more professional. Since it records directly to the iPod (in WAV format) you can transfer your audio back to your Mac just by syncing with iTunes, and thence to editing and compression. For their target audience of mobile podcasters this looks like it could be a very handy tool.
Wired notes that it should be shipping in June for $100 and is compatible with the 5G iPod video as well as the 3G nano.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Software
RSS (or Really Simple Syndication) is becoming an ever more popular way to read online content quickly and without having to visit individual websites. As RSS feeds becomes more popular, so do the RSS readers that allow you to access the feeds. In my opinion, the two best RSS readers on the Mac are NetNewsWire and Vienna. Now that NetNewsWire costs the same as Vienna (i.e. nothing), what better time to take a look at what each has to offer?Continue reading NetNewsWire vs. Vienna
