  • MacBook Air unboxing pictures and video

The MacBook Air has landed, and people are posting unboxing videos and pictures. The embedded video was sent to us by Betty, a new MacBook Air owner. Our friends at UneasySilence have taken a slew of pictures of their newly arrived MacBook Air.

Are you reading TUAW on a MacBook Air? How is it treating you so far?

  • Widget Watch: Woot!

This Lifehacker comment thread made me go researching on what I might use for Webclips, but save for the front page of my favorite blog (TUAW, duh), I couldn't think of anything I'd really want to keep on my Dashboard 24/7. I did like the idea of putting Woot.com (and Shirt.woot, which I've been looking at a lot lately) on there, but as a few of the commenters say, webclipping (can I verb that?) the entire page makes things a little too big.

Fortunately, David Elliot piped up about the Woot.com widget, which easily and quickly lets you monitor the Woot sites from your dashboard, with a minimum of space taken up. And now I've got two instances of it running on my Dashboard, one for regular Woot and one for the Shirt version. I especially like that it includes Growl notification, too -- if I happen to be working around midnight and a really good deal pops up, I won't miss it.

Of course, you may not want to have something popping up on your Dashboard all the time tempting you to spend money. But if you're already following the Woot empire (and to tell the truth, I almost never buy anything-- I just like looking), the widget is an easy and simple way to stay up to date.

  • MacBook Air wireless problems?

    Filed under:

This news comes just as some of you are un-boxing that shiny new MacBook Air. Macworld reports that Apple has updated the MacBook Air wireless release note. In this release note, Apple explains that you may experience problems with older 802.11n routers when using Remote Disc, Migration Assistant, or Remote Install.

As a possible solution Apple mentions that you can try upgrading the firmware on your router; however, this is only possible if your router supports upgrades (although most popular routers do). Otherwise, you may be looking to get a new router; which adds to the total cost of owning a MacBook Air.

  • Torque Game Builder 1.7 helps indie game developers

Good news for indie game designers on OS X -- GarageGames has released version 1.7 of their Torque Game Builder, which allows programmers to create games for almost any platform from within an OS X interface. This latest release improves the editors for link points and collision polygons, as well as a new editor for vector objects and new t2dSceneObject methods. If you know what all that means, then you could probably program a better game than I could.

But the good news here is the one of the cheapest and best tools for game developers is now better than ever. Demos and trials of the tool are available on GarageGames' site, and licenses are as cheap as $100 for independent game developers. You've got the tools-- now go make us some great Mac games!

  • iTunes overtakes RealPlayer

Even though Apple's stock prices are in the slumps, iTunes usage is certainly not! Website Optimization posted that iTunes has surpassed RealPlayer usage in terms of online streaming -- for the first time in history. They cite that iTunes was the only online streaming player that had a positive growth over year 2007. Here's how the online players break down as of December 2007:
    • iTunes - 35,664
    • QuickTime - 12,787
    • RealPlayer - 27,565
    • Windows Media Player - 75,865
iTunes is now the second most popular streaming player behind Windows Media Player. Web Optimization also stated that iTunes has an annual growth of about 26.8%. There's no doubt that we will hear about this more when Steve takes the stage at a future music-related event.

  • CARS on hiatus, and a favorite CARS moment

The Mac web can be a pretty serious place, and that is why I was a little melancholy when I first heard that Crazy Apple Rumors would be going on hiatus for awhile. CARS, as those in the know call it, has been consistently funny for a good long time (feel free not to comment if you don't agree with me. Humor is a tricky thing, and it is highly personal) and the Internet will be a slightly less funny place without it.

Given the hiatus Brent Simmons, of NetNewsWire fame, suggested that a few folks link to their favorite CARS moment. I was all for it, because it would give me reason to link to the one and only time I appeared in CARS. The story was about the delay of Leopard (remember that?) and how it warped my tiny little brain. Still funny, if you ask me.

Here's hoping John Moltz, the man behind the site, will rest up quickly and be back to mocking Apple rumors in no time.

  • PC vendors to use the MacBook Air's tiny Intel chip

The World's Thinnest Laptop will soon have competition. Macworld is reporting that (at least) two unnamed manufacturers intend to use the tiny Intel chip that powers the MacBook Air.

Steve Jobs made a big deal about it at this month's Macworld Expo keynote address. The chip uses Intel's 965GMS chipset, and has a footprint 60% smaller than comparable Merom processors. The MacBook Air ships with either a 1.6Ghz or a 1.8GHz version.

While other manufacturers will target the MacBook Air's size, they'll have trouble beating its good looks. Sure, many have complained about its lack of Firewire or what have you, but no one denies its beauty. Johnny Ive knows what he's doing.

  • TUAW Responds: Creating Web Clips with User Names and Passwords

TUAW reader Rudi writes that he needs web clips on his iPhone that "prefix my web path with a username and password, great for things like web based corporate email." In response to Rudi and to anyone else who needs special-purpose URLs, including ones that make telephone calls (using the tel:// prefix instead of http://), here's ClipIt.

When run, it prompts you for a web clip name and URL. Enter these and tap Create. The utility builds a new web clip for you and places it on your home screen. There's no way to go back and fix a URL with this (and of course, being the iPhone, no cut & paste yet), so make sure you've entered it carefully the first time.

If you're looking to create a telephone link, build a URL that starts with tel://, e.g. tel://202-456-1111. When tapped, the web clip first opens Safari, which then asks you to confirm whether you want to continue placing the call. ClipIt, with its web clip functionality, works only on iPhone firmware 1.1.3 and higher.

  • How To: Tell your iPod touch has the January Upgrade

You probably already know that you can go directly to the iPod touch January Upgrade purchase page by following this link. What you might not know is that in order to purchase the iPod touch January upgrade you must be logged into your iTunes account and you must be running iTunes 7.6. You cannot make this purchase using earlier versions of the software.

If you ever restore your iPod and need to get back those upgrades, once again you need to use the magic of 7.6 plus be signed into the account with which you purchased it. I found out the hard way that your Mac doesn't automatically "remember" that you purchased it and that it belongs on your iPod touch.

I was one of the many people affected by the week-long "Error -2" outages at the iTunes store and had bought it with my secondary account. After restoring, my iPod just wouldn't reload the upgrade. I knew I had bought it and I knew it was available in my home folder in Library/iTunes/Mobile Applications. The problem was that I needed to sign into my secondary account (rarely used--except for doing posts like these) and then synchronize while signed in.

A few calls to Apple and a lot of annoyance later, I hope these tips may save you some grief. You can tell if your iPod touch has been "blessed" by checking its Summary tab in iTunes. Next to the Software Version, you should see the magic phrase "(with Software Upgrade)".

  • Last call for international iPhone photos!

Last week we put out the call to our readers for pictures of iPhones in non-carrier countries and the response has been amazing! Thank you to everyone who has sent in your pictures, I can't wait to put up the gallery. If you haven't sent in a picture of your (or someone else's) iPhone in a non-carrier country, there is still time. If you can shoot an e-mail to photos AT tuaw.com by the end of today (January 31, 2008), we'll be happy to include your submission.

Look for the gallery and a map of non-carrier iPhone users sometime next week. Thanks again to everyone who has taken the time to send us pictures!

Update: In my excitement, I neglected to put the timezone. We'll be accepting photos until 12 AM PST.

  • EDGE down

    Filed under:

Lots of annoyed iPhone users today in the central US. Apparently, the servers responsible for running the EDGE network for AT&T are down, depriving many iPhone users of their normal connectivity.

This outage is affecting users from Chicago to Kansas. If you're part of the affected customer base, let us know in the comments. According to poster BBuehner at the Apple Support discussions forum, AT&T says the problem should be fixed by the end of today but could go as long as February 5th.

    Thanks Rick Kaczanko

  • A color toolbox

There are quite a few OS X applications and plugins available to make life easier for Mac-loving designers of any ilk. I'd like to highlight a few that have earned a place my heart (or my color picker). Most of these tools apply to any 2D designer, whether you make websites, interfaces or spend your time in the world of hardcopy. The price to value ratio varies, so I leave it up to you to determine whether any particular tool is of enough value to add to your arsenal. And don't worry, there are some freebies.

  • Amazon buys audiobook vendor Audible

    Filed under:

The tie between spoken-books merchant Audible and iTunes has always been strong. Audible's catalog forms the backbone of iTunes' audio book offerings, and there's a history of Audible offering iTunes-exclusive content. So it came as a surprise to me when Amazon bought Audible for $300 million, announced today. I'd imagine that the deal includes provisions for Apple's existing contracts, but I'm curious as to how this will affect future negotiations. The Amazon/Audible deal is projected to close in the 2nd quarter of this year.

We've covered Amazon's entry into DRM-free music sales previously on TUAW.

  • Parallels webcast today launches Virtuozzo Containers server

Despite the publicity around Parallels' flagship Mac product, Parallels Desktop (which we've contributed to in some small part), there are some other interesting tools in the stable of Parallels' parent company, SWsoft -- which is now being rebranded as Parallels, Inc. just to keep us on our toes. One of those products is Parallels Virtuozzo Containers (PVC), which launches version 4.0 today in a webcast event at 11 am (Eastern). While PVC is not a Mac-compatible server (yet), the technology choices Parallels made in developing it may illuminate some future paths for the yet-unreleased Parallels Server product for Mac OS X.

Virtualization products like Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion, and Microsoft's Virtual Server work via a hypervisor model, virtualizing the hardware platform so that each virtual machine runs in its own full-OS environment. This approach does a great job of insulating the VMs from the underlying physical hardware and provides for OS and build diversity (Windows, Linux and eventually Mac OS X Server running on the same virtualization platform) but it has some drawbacks: each virtual machine consumes a full helping of RAM, disk space and CPU resources while running, as though it was a physical machine. VMware in particular is respected for its expertise in optimizing these resource demands with its ESX enterprise-level server products, but the baseline requirements for system resources can't be fully alleviated.

PVC does OS virtualization, which tackles the problem of resource allocation for virtual machines in a different way. Virtuozzo VMs, or "containers," are created as overlays on the base OS that runs on the physical server, like a piece of transparent acetate over an animation backdrop. All the basic OS processes, files and libraries are present in the base server OS instance, and the container holds the differential changes that allow the VMs their individual characteristics and configurations. While you sacrifice one big feature of hypervisor systems, the ability to diversify OSes -- since the base OS is fixed as either Windows or Linux, all the containers have to be built on top of that OS -- what you gain is substantial, as each additional running VM takes only a small chunk of RAM and a comparatively tiny swath of hard drive space to work in. Virtuozzo servers can handle high VM loading on relatively modest hardware without taking major performance hits, which is a big plus if your server budget is constrained.

In the OS X virtualization session at Macworld Expo, the Parallels folks suggested that we may see both hypervisor and OS virtualization approaches integrated in the Parallels Server product, as the engineering teams from PVC and Server have the opportunity to put their heads together. Parallels has also said that the management tools for PVC and Parallels Server will be integrated as development moves forward. Even though PVC doesn't support the Mac directly, if you're interested in virtualization you might pop into the webcast and check it out.

  • Watch Report reviews Nike Amp+ Remote Control

I'm a fan of watches, so I have been interested in the Nike Amp+ Remote Control for awhile. That's the watch/iPod remote control from Nike that works with your iPod Nano /Nike+ combo. It will let you start, stop, and fast forward music, as well as tell the time and give you one button access to your power song.

I haven't bought one for a few reasons:
    • I don't have an iPod nano, so I can't use the Nike stuff
    • I haven't seen one in person
The only solution for the first reason is to get an iPod nano, however, the good folks at the Watch Report have solved my second issue. Thanks to this video, which accompanies their review of the Amp+ Remote Control. Clearly, if your looking for a watch that tells time first and foremost, this isn't the watch for you. That being said the Watch Report concludes that the pros out number the cons.

Are there any Nike Amp+ Remote Control users out there? Sound off in the comments with your thoughts on this product.

  • iPhonesque makes Growl look like the iPhone

Can't say I ever really vibed with any of the default Growl styles (Music Video is cool for showing off your Mac, but a little too distracting for common use), and I've pretty much just stuck with Smoke, because it's simple and cool looking. But iPhonesque is nice enough to make me switch without a thought -- it's a Growl style designed to look like the iPhone's compact little dialogues. In other words, it's flashy enough to look cool, but minimal enough that it doesn't drive you nuts when messages back up in Growl.

Any other Growl styles that you all really like?
