- Reminder, 10% off new iPods with trade-in
Filed under: iPod Family, Deals
If you're shopping for a new iPod this week, Daniel Jalkut at Red Sweater reminded us that you can get a 10% discount on a new iPod any day at your local Apple Store if you do one simple thing: bring in an old iPod to trade in. The program's been around since 2005, but it's always worth another mention.
There are plenty of other options for recycling an old iPod, including some that will give you credit -- check them out. Rumor has it that some retail outlets are discounting iPods as well...Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: iPod Family, iTS, iTunes, Software Update, iPhone
When Apple released the iPhone / iPod touch 1.1.3 update; there was one new option in the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store that wasn't given much attention. With the inclusion of the update, you can now activate an iTunes Gift Card right from the Wi-Fi store.
You can find this new "Redeem" option in the "Downloads" section of the Wi-Fi store. Just tap the button, enter in the code from the back of the gift card, and then click "Redeem" again, and the gift card will be added to your account. The only problem that I see about this option is the fact that you cannot view (on the go) how much money is still credited to your iTunes account, however, this is a welcomed feature to the iTunes Wi-Fi Store.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: iPod Family, iTS, iPhone
Well, I've finally had a good look at the iTunes way of delivering iPod touch and iPhone applications. The iPod touch upgrade package arrived as a package using the ipa extension and is stored in a "Mobile Applications" folder. Like many Apple bundles, the ipa package is in fact a zipped archive which you can easily unzip and examine.
Inside, I found a package manifest and the deliverable. The manifest was in human readable form, the actual "product" (which is nothing other than a simple text properly list that enables the iPod touch features, already installed during the 1.1.3 upgrade) is encrypted. There is a sinf that accompanies the product and a p7b that supports the manifest. Both of these use encryption technology to protect the integrity of the manifest and to limit access to the deliverable.
These details are extremely similar to way iTunes currently ships its iPod games and ensure that whenever third party applications begin shipping that they won't be easily pirated.
Thanks everyone who tipped us off about this

The Apple TV isn't the only device in town that offers up movie rentals (in both standard and HD), but it is the one in the headlines this week (I wonder why). Steve noted during his keynote that many companies have tried to get online video in the livingroom and they have all failed, including Apple. Amongst the other companies named was Microsoft. As you may know folks can rent movies via the XBox Marketplace and watch them on their TV. Sounds like the new, improved Apple TV, doesn't it? Our good friends at Joystiq though so as well, and whipped up a chart comparing and contrasting the two offerings.
How does the Apple TV fair? Well, clearly the XBox 360 does a much better job at playing video games, but the Apple TV wins on the video front.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: iPod Family, Cult of Mac, iPhone
TUAW reader DoctaBu has come up with a novel way to use Webclips: creating a personal photo album. He realized he could have some fun with webclips by building an entire page of nothing but his friends' and family's pictures. He placed these all on a separate SpringBoard screen, which he can flick over to whenever he wants. Have you done something extraordinary or unique with Webclips? Let us know!

Filed under: Accessories, Portables, MacBook Air
Well, this was inevitable. When Steve Jobs dramatically presented the MacBook Air by removing it from a manila envelope, two enterprising artists saw an opportunity, and the result is AirMail.
It's a vinyl laptop sleeve for the MacBook Air that looks just like -- you guessed it -- a standard issue manila envelope. They're lined with fleece and even feature a tie enclosure. Each hand made bag costs $29.95US, and they begin shipping two weeks from today.
It's not the most durable bag available, but among the most clever.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

TUAW Reader Randal S. writes in with a happy unbricking story. After running AnySIM on his 1.0.2 iPhone, he ignored the warnings and upgraded his phone to a 1.1.1 brick. "Even taking it back to 1.0.2, I couldn't get past the bad IMEI and SIM messages. I tried many things to get it fixed. Hopeless."Now, after the release of 1.1.3, he tried putting his now-1.0.2 phone into recovery mode and updated it to 1.1.3. "It rewrote the firmware, and I now have a fully functional 1.1.3 phone! Yeay! So 1.1.3 firmware must be a complete rewrite. Just FYI, but you probably already knew."
See, TUAW readers? Happy endings do come true! His 1.1.3 phone is back to being locked but it's working again and can be used on the AT&T network.

Filed under: Gaming, iPod Family, iPhone
TUAW reader Alex Cahiz pointed us to this New Creatives page showing a design for Van's Finger Fracture for iPhone and iPod touch. It's hard to tell how close this design is to being a reality -- whether it's just a concept design or whether there will be a real product. I couldn't find any further details at the Vans website but if it is for reals, it looks like it would rock.
According to the writeup, the game uses the touch screen to steer your skateboard and allow you to pick various equipment to perform tricks and earn points. It's unclear whether the accelerometer would be used as well.
To read more as well as to see other screen designs, pop over to the New Creatives website.

Readers suggest that these are lifted screen shots--so we're going to go with either "Concept Design" or "Internet Hoax" for now.

Skitch is one of our favorite apps here at TUAW. In case you haven't heard of it, Skitch is a very cool screen capturing app that makes it easy to capture stuff on your Mac's screen, do some basic editing, and then share it with your friends via FTP, Flickr, or Skitch's own service.
Skitch has been in private beta since Macworld 2007, but now you can get your hands on a beta version of your very own. My Mac has become ten times more useful to me with Skitch installed, so do yourself a favor and get this app posthaste.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Cult of Mac, Apple
If you head on over to the NY Times today, you'll find an especially cute and well-done advertisement from Apple. In this, PC reacts to the Wall Street Journal quote in the banner ad and amends the pro-Apple ad by pasting "NOT" at the end of "Leopard is better and faster than Vista". Be aware: watching the ad pretty much brought my 733 G4 to its knees and I couldn't get the sound to work but since PC is my virtual advertisement boyfriend[1], watching the ad was a must-do.
[1] C'mon. Both you and I know that he secretly owns Apple products at home[2].

I'm a big fan of Etymotic headphones, and as soon as I got an iPhone I knew I wanted to replace the very cool included headphone/headset with something by Etymotic. Sadly, they didn't make such a product, that is until Macworld. That's right, campers, the hf2 from Etymotic combines the great sound from their ER-4 earphones with a headset so you can get all that great noise isolating action that Etymotic is known for and still be able to answer calls without pulling the headphones out.

Filed under: iPod Family, Hacks, iPhone
Soon after Steve Jobs announced the new 1.1.3, Emil Hedaya realized that a simple meta-refreseh redirect would allow him to create custom icons for any webclip. All you need is a website of your own. You link to your custom pages and have them redirect you to the sites in question.
To demonstrate this he's put together a set of iPhone shortcuts to his favorite sites (including Meebo, Fandango, Flickr and more). If you navigate to his page and webclip off those links, you'll create some great looking icons on your SpringBoard Home page instead of the dull defaults.

Mac users have long complained about leading GPS-maker Garmin's support for the fairer platform. Fortunately, Garmin has finally stepped up to the plate at Macworld this year with several announcements for the Mac. Perhaps most interesting is Bobcat, which "allows you to transfer waypoints, tracks, and routes between your Mac and Garmin device and manage your data using your Garmin maps."
In addition, Garmin announced that all new maps for 2008 will be released in a native Mac format. Older PC-formatted maps can be converted and installed with MapInstall, which was released last year. Finally, the central Mac support page also lists Mac compatibility for the Garmin Connect web service coming later this year (as early as March for some models).
Both Bobcat and MapInstall are available for download now. It's good to see Garmin finally getting its Mac house in order.
Thanks Jason!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Macworld, iPod Family, iTS, iTunes, Bad Apple
The long-rumored iTunes rental service is finally up and running. For many users, the most attractive part of the service (and certainly the only part that really sets it apart from any of the other online rental options) is the ability to transfer your rental to an iPod, iPhone/iPod Touch, or third-generation Nano for playback on the go. Actually, let me rephrase that: your iPod Classic, iPhone/iPod Touch or third-generation Nano. That's right boys and girls -- if you are one of the millions who have 5 and 5.5G iPods with video, no iTunes rentals for you. I suppose that's one way to get people to upgrade.
There was an explosion of applause during yesterday's keynote when Steve Jobs announced rental compatibility with every iPod. Something tells me that if it had been understood that it only included every current generation iPod, the response might have been more akin to the boos that erupted when it was announced that the iPod Touch software update is $20. Update: Evidently, Steve did say "current generation iPods" - in any event, it was not made clear that 5/5.5G iPods would not be compatible. I mean, I for one was not expecting the message below when trying to test out this whole Rentals scheme:
So, why are previous generation iPods incompatible with iTunes Rentals? Pure speculation leads me to believe that the whole authentication-chip for TV-out "update" to the Classic is at the root of the incompatibility. I guess it would just be too much of a risk for Apple (and the movie studios) to allow 5G customers connect their iPods to a TV via an open TV-out cable so that the SD content could then be captured using the analog hole. Because really, circumventing the iPod rental system using TV-out is how people really want to pirate digital media. Not through BitTorrent or breaking the actual iTunes copy protection. No, individuals are going to capture the analog signal from the TV out on their iPod and then convert that back into digital, all for sub-DVD quality movies. Makes perfect sense. (Not.)
Well, at least I now have an actual reason to look at buying an iPod Classic aside from capacity. Still, this and the lack of Front Row rental access is not really doing the best job of convincing me that iTunes rentals have a place in my digital life.
Update: As some of the comments have pointed out, the reports about the iPod Classic's only working with certified Apple TV-out cables might be untrue. I don't have an iPod Classic so I can't verify it one way or another. Again, that was just pure speculation on my part for some logical reason for 5/5.5 G incompatibility. Update 2: After looking at iLounge's dissection of the AV cable, I feel confident that an authentication chip is infact required for the new models. If this is related to the iTunes rentals remains unknown.
Other comments have raised the question of the quality of the rentals being too high for the 5G iPod. This I can unequivocally state is NOT true. As a test, I went ahead and bought "Chuck & Buck" from iTMS. Not only was the file size identical (1.06 GB), iTunes itself saw no difference between buying the movie and renting it. I was able to transfer the newly purchased copy of the film to my iPod with absolutely no problem. This is NOT a matter of hardware not being capable, it is a decision for whatever reason, not to update the software on older generation devices to work with the new rental system.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
