  • Apple-Stanford promotion on iTunes

Apple and Stanford University's Lively Arts have teamed up to bring a new promotion to iTunes and iTunes U. This new promotion will allow people associated with Standford in some capacity (students, faculty, and staff) and Lively Arts patrons to download free songs from artists participating in SU's Lively Arts. On Stanford's website, they list all of the participating artists, including: Wynton Marsalis, Blind Boys of Alabama, and the Meridian Arts Ensemble.

This is the second time that Apple has done a promotion with a performing arts educational institution, for those of you keeping up, Apple did something similar in September 2007 with the University of Illinois.

    Thanks, Ian!

  • Nicecast gets full Leopard support

    Filed under:

Today, Rogue Amoeba updated their Nicecast software to 1.9. Nicecast, as you might already know, lets you create your own internet radio station on your Mac. The biggest new "feature" in Nicecast 1.9 is that it fully supports OS X Leopard (10.5).

In addition to getting Leopard support, Nicecast also received three new notable features:
    • The update includes Instant Hijack 2 (which allows you to Hijack the audio of applications that are already running)
    • Soundflower 1.3 support
    • "Track Titles" drawer added
This update is free to all existing Nicecast owners running both Tiger (10.4) and Leopard. You can also download a free trial of Nicecast or purchase the new version for $40.

In similar news, Rogue Amoeba also posted on their blog that they are "hard at work" on the Leopard-friendly version of Audio Hijack Pro (version 2.8).

  • YouSendIt releases Express for Mac

I'm probably one of the few bloggers here who hasn't shelled out for a .Mac subscription (and an iDisk) -- I've just never personally come across a situation where I needed one. For transferring big files I usually either throw it on a DVD or an FTP site, or I use YouSendIt for free -- there's a 100mb limit, but in all of my file transferring, I've never had reason to break it (most of what I send is audio tracks for podcasts).

And now they've released the application version of their interface -- YouSendIt Express is now available for the Mac. Unfortunately, it seems like the standalone app doesn't have some options that the web interface does (specifically checking delivery confirmation and a download limit), but for just shuffling a file off to someone else fast, it does the trick.

From everything I can find on the website, it works just great with the free account version of YouSendIt, so if you find yourself shipping off files quickly enough that you need a dedicated app to do it, there you are.

  • Order prints of iPhone photos with the phone itself

ECCE TERRAM announced a new service this week that will allow people to order prints of photos stored on their iPhones from the phones themselves. With their Photo2lab Client, users may select a photo (both those taken with the iPhone and those transfered from iPhoto), add text and create prints, post cards and even mini photo books. You'll even be able to add an address to a post card from the iPhone's built-in contacts list.

This sounds great, and ECCE TERRAM says it will be available just after the iPhone's SDK is released in February.

  • 1Password brings form-filling to the iPhone

Back at Macworld we saw a sneak-peek from 1Password creater Dave Teare of the (then forthcoming) iPhone form-filling, username-storing 1Password bookmarklet for iPhone (pictured above at Moscone). Today sees a new build of 1Password pushed out for beta-loving users who want to take advantage of it.

Of course, one main qualm people may have with this is "just how secure is my data?" The 1Password data is saved in the bookmarklet itself using "448-bit blowfish encryption". Users set up password to use with the bookmarklet, and 1Password outputs all your data in an encrypted format to sync via iTunes' 'Sync Safari Bookmarks option'. Once on the iPhone, you navigate to the page such as Pownce, choose the bookmarklet, enter your previously-set password and choose the login you wish to use. All the form filling, and form submission, is handled by the Javascript.

I've been long-in-need of something like this for the iPhone -- the typical 'too many usernames, too many unique passwords' scenario -- and using it this evening, it's been mighty handy. If you're wanting to get your hands on it, simply set your copy of 1Password to check for beta releases (all the usual beta disclaimers apply) and download the most recent release!

  • iWeb 2.0.3 update

In addition to releasing the iWork update last night, the updated status on MacBook Air and Apple TV today; Apple just now issued an update for iWeb '08. In Apple's normal long-winded explanation of the update, they say "This update addresses compatibility with Mac OS X."

The 17.2 MB iWeb 2.0.3 update can be downloaded through Software Update (Apple Menu > Software Update) or by downloading the update package from Apple's support downloads website.

  • Apple hints at forthcoming Aperture update

There's been much debate on the interwebs on what lies in store for users of Aperture (Apple's professional-level photo management software). I'm not suggesting that we mourn Aperture's passing, but it has been a little neglected of late, and as someone who uses Aperture almost daily that makes me intrigued by Apple's plans for the application.

Apple has been hounded for a little while about some cameras not having RAW support in OS X: colleague Chris Ullrich's Nikon D300 is still unsupported, for example. So you can imagine the widespread surprise when Joe Schorr, Apple's Senior Product Manager for Photo Applications posted a thread on the Aperture Discussion Groups:

"We're constantly working to make Aperture an even better tool for users, and will soon release an upgrade that includes RAW format support for new cameras and other exciting new features. Please stay tuned."

This is where the plot thickens, dear readers, as the updates for Aperture's camera support actually hinge on updates to OS X. So if a new camera comes out, Apple puts out an OS X RAW Support Update for these new formats, and Aperture just works -- as do any other applications that utilize the OS X image frameworks. Now add into that the use of the word 'upgrade', not update, but upgrade. While perhaps hinting at a paid upgrade, it's good to know that the frustration of photographers everywhere isn't falling on deaf ears.

  • High-res Motion templates at motionVFX

motionVFX, a new source of templates for Apple Motion, is offering 2d and 3d templates prepped at 1920x1080 and 24fps. The 10 second clips are downloadable for $10, so I took one for a spin.

There are rare circumstances when I would use a template for a finished piece, and motionVFX has a relatively small (but growing) starting selection which limits the chances that I'll find anything "perfect" for a current project. However, I love getting inside of other people's work to figure out new ways of doing things and the template I picked was well done, well organized and I did actually learn some new tricks.

The site navigation is mostly intuitive, but lacking in a few features. The previews are quick and helpful, but I miss the "lightbox" functionality found on most stock sites. Maybe they'll get to that as the collection grows. Checkout with Paypal is great for me, but the offsite credit card processing breaks from the overall professional look of the site. The fact that I was quite happy with my purchase made that a moot point for me, though.

motionVFX is offering TUAW lovers a special discount... 25% off of your purchase, including their high-res stock photos, with unlimited use through the end of February. Just enter the coupon code "J2LGR7" at checkout. And because I care about our readers, I tested that too. It works.

  • Swag bag winners, t-shirt replacements, many more giveaways to follow

    tuaw swag bag

This morning I finally shipped out the first round of swag-bag winners from our Talkcasts. Congratulations to those who called in, I hope you enjoy your junk prizes. Unfortunately our pre-Macworld t-shirt winners wound up with their t-shirts handed out at Macworld, and those were the very last of our version 1.0 TUAW t-shirts. Time and budgets will tell if we make more. Instead, I shipped the folks who responded to my winner emails some goodies courtesy Dr. Bott.

And speaking of Dr. Bott, they've been generous enough to provide a big bag (or two) of goodies from the likes of Griffin, Marware, H20 Audio, ifrogz and other cool manufacturers. So be on the lookout for more giveaways-- my wife won't let me keep this stuff lying around the house forever! (Hint: we've got an extra MacBook Air poster hidden away)

I'd also like to thank Equinux for the copies of Coverscout and Mail Stationery Packs, plus some show swag, which is also making its way out to you lucky readers.

  • A more elegant manila envelope

We posted a while ago about AirMail, a vinyl carrier for the MacBook Air which took the manila envelope idea quite literally. It's conceivable that the sheer sexiness of the MacBook Air may eventually make the manila envelope itself a fashion icon, but in the meantime Studio Leung has come out with a bag that abstracts the envelope concept into a less humorous (and possibly more elegant) design.

The Mac bag is water resistant and made from waxed cotton with a felt lining. Its source of inspiration is especially evident in the closure which is an envelope-style wraparound fastener using plastic buttons and a rubber cord.

  • xScope 2.0

If I had any talent whatsoever in the area of graphic design xScope would be a go to app in my toolbox. xScope, for those not in the know, is a great little app that makes measuring onscreen elements a snap. xScope 2.0 raises the ante by adding a Dimensions tool that works as if by magic. Turning on the Dimensions tool lets you find dimensions between various elements (or using a lasso tool) quickly and easily. It is tough to describe, but check out this cool video of it in action.

There are a bunch of new features and improvements, all of which are listed here, which make xScope 2 more than worth the $26.95 for you pixel pushers out there.

  • Apple TV software update delayed

Just a quick update on the status of the Apple TV software upgrade: according to Apple's web site, the software is not quite ready and will be available in one to two weeks.

As we covered during MWSF, the Apple TV Take 2 (or as I like to call it, Apple TV Redux) will feature support buying music/movies/rentals directly from Apple TV, HD rentals and the ability to view pictures from a Flickr or .Mac account.

The update is free to existing customers and will presumably be shipping standard on all new Apple TV's as soon as it is complete.

    Thanks WSN!

Update: Here is Apple's press release detailing that the MacBook Air is now shipping, and that the Apple TV update will be available 'by the end of February.' Thanks to Ominx for the link.

  • iTunes makes "that music from the MacBook Air commercial" available

If you, like many other Apple (and non-Apple) customers has fallen in love with the new MacBook Air commercial, you can now easily find its "I'm a New Soul" song in iTunes. Israeli musician Yael Naim sings this hauntingly beautiful song, and because we love you guys, here's the entire song and original video courtesy of YouTube.

"I'm a new soul. I came to this strange world hoping, I could learn a bit 'bout how to give and take." Sadly, the fish probably dies. Don't throw goldfish into natural lakes, guys.

  • Campfire goes iPhone

If you're a fan of web-based group chat tool Campfire, you may be pleased to learn that it's now available for the iPhone. Now, when you visit Campfire sites on the iPhone, you'll be directed to an iPhone-optimized version.

Due to the way the developers have created the iPhone version, you'll need to use two-fingered scrolling to move through your transcript. For more details, check out 37signal's post, where they explain the technical reasons for the two-finger scroll. Apparently, on the iPhone the "auto" overflow property for HTML gets rendered as a separate frame.

If you'd like to learn more about the iPhone's special capabilities and limitations with respect to its Mobile Safari implementation, I strongly recommend you look into the iPhone Web Dev group at google groups.

  • iTunes: Free Wednesday

Several new items have appeared on iTunes since I posted yesterday's Free Tuesday compilation. Some stores update later than others, and sometimes things that aren't posted in the morning are posted by the next day. Here are the updated freebies for today.

    US: James Otto,
Our Discovery Download puts the focus on a different genre each week, offering up a free track we think is worth your attention. James Otto is a part of Nashville's MuzikMafia crew, the group of friend and performers who believe in "country music without prejudice." His work is personified by the music of Big & Rich and Cowboy Troy. This soul-inflected country gem comes from Otto's upcoming album, Sunset Man.

    US: Phineas and Ferb,
School's out for the summer, and stepbrothers Phineas and Ferb decide to make each day an adventure, from building a death-defying rollercoaster to surfing tidal waves to locating Frankenstein's brain. Their bold escapades always end up cramping the style of their teenaged sister, Candace, who makes every attempt to expose Mom to what is really going on, but somehow always seems to fail. Meanwhile, the family's simple-minded pet platypus leads a double life as secret "Agent P" and faces off with the evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz to save the world. There's a whole lot of stuff to do before school starts and Phineas and Ferb plan to do it all.

    US: Breaking Bad, Breaking Bad
Emmy(R)-nominated veteran actor Bryan Cranston (Malcolm in the Middle, Little Miss Sunshine) heads the cast of Breaking Bad, portraying Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher whose life is suddenly transformed by a dire medical diagnosis. Aaron Paul (Big Love) plays Jesse Dupree, a street-savvy former student who "teaches" Walter a new trade. Anna Gunn (Deadwood) is Walter's pregnant wife Skylar, an enterprising homemaker. Dean Norris (Little Miss Sunshine) is Walter's boisterous and crude brother-in-law Hank who happens to be a federal drug enforcement agent. Betsy Brandt (CSI) plays Walter's sister-in-law Marie, and R.J. Mitte (Hannah Montana, Weeds) is Walter's son, Walter Jr., whose teen angst is further complicated by cerebral palsy.

    US: LOST, LOST
The wait is over. The hit drama returns with the highly anticipated fourth season. Picking up from the shocking finale, we learn from "flash forwards" who from Oceanic Airlines flight 815 gets off the island. The excitement continues to build as new enemies, strange alliances, and tragic events on the islands . . . and off . . . push television's most original drama forward.

  • Apple posts MacBook Air support page

    Filed under:

The first MacBook Air knowledge base article I posted about wasn't exactly breaking news, but you can find out lots of new tidbits about the MacBook Air by perusing the newly unveiled MacBook Air support page. Take a look at the User's Guide (PDF), chime in on the forums, or figure out how to setup your MacBook Air.

Looks like there is some interesting stuff in there, and perhaps reading about the MacBook Air will help you stop compulsively refreshing that tracking information Apple sent you.

  • NTFSready cleans up your filename act

One of my intermittent day-job responsibilities is to move big chunks of data (20 GB or more in a session) from the friendly, forgiving, name-your-files-whatever-you-want confines of a Mac OS X server onto cranky, finicky, no-funky-characters (but portable) NAS devices so that the data can travel with a production team to some far-away city. This is generally a straightforward and simple task, except for one annoying fact: illegal characters, as SMB or NTFS define them, in file or folder names can bring those massive copies to a screeching halt. Major buzzkill!

There are a few ways to clean up filenames to make them legal for transfer; I've used both FileBuddy and A Better Finder Rename with success, and ABFR even has an "NTFS legal" preset for quick action. For a single-purpose tool, though, there's now NTFSready, This 10-euro donationware tool will hunt through your files and folders for illegal characters, nuke them, and that's about all there is. Is it worth it? Well, if you need to rename files for NTFS use on an everyday basis, maybe. At 10 euro, though, I'd say you're better off paying the $19.95 for ABFR and getting the flexibility that comes with it.

  • Quick Look Suspicious Packages

As I've noted before, I'm a huge fan of Quick Look and I eagerly follow the third-party plugins released by developers. A new one came along recently that's worth a look, especially for the security-conscious out there. Suspicious Package will let you use Quick Look to examine the contents of standard installer packages before you install them. You can navigate folder structure and have a look at what it contains with one click.

Of course you can do this manually by right-clicking in the Finder and choosing "Show Package Contents," but this makes it that much easier to do a quick check. Unfortunately, it does not work yet on 'mpkg' meta-packages. Suspicious Package is a free download from Mother Ruin Software.

Update: As a commenter below notes, "Show Package Contents" only shows the contents, not where they will install.

  • MacBook Air Leopard disk only works with MacBook Air

    Filed under:

As we speak many, many people are anxiously awaiting the arrival of their MacBook Air. When you open up the MacBook Air you'll see that it includes a Leopard installation disk, as every other Mac does. This Apple KB article supplies us with an interesting fact: the Leopard disk will only work with a MacBook Air. The Installer checks to see if it is running on an Air, and if it isn't refuses to install Leopard.

Clearly, with support for multi-touch gestures and Remote Disc, the MacBook Air is likely running a slightly custom install of OS X, so it makes sense that Apple would limit it to installing on the Air. In the same vein Apple warns you not to try and install a non-MacBook Air version of Leopard onto the Air. Something to keep in mind.

Update: This is why you shouldn't blog before having your morning caffeine, folks. As many people in the comments pointed out this isn't new to the MacBook Air, most restore disks only work the with model of Mac that they came with. It is still interesting to note, though, for people new to the Mac (right? Any body?).
