- Ask TUAW: Picking boot OS, RF remotes with Front Row, Finder view options and more
Filed under: Features, Troubleshooting, Ask TUAW
We're still catching up on some of our Ask TUAW question backlog. So in this round we'll tackle questions on RF remotes and Front Row, Leopard compatibility problems, view options in the Finder, getting rid of duplicate files, using an EFI bootpicker, and more.
As always your suggestions are most welcome, and questions for next week should be left in the comments. And now to the questions!Continue reading Ask TUAW: Picking boot OS, RF remotes with Front Row, Finder view options and more

Filed under: iPod Family, Cool tools, Hacks, iPhone
iPhone hacker eok writes to let me know that he and Samuel have gotten SIP registration and signalization working. They took a few mobile terminal shots, but the real work is being done via ssh. Samuel is working on connecting the audio in/out to the pjSIP. If you have iPhone or iPod touch coding skills and want to get involved in the project, connect to #touchmods on irc.undernet.org. It looks like most of the work will be done on European time.
Oh, and if anyone is giving away free iPods to worthy developers? eok recommends that Samuel gets one first. He writes that Samuel has been the driving force behind the compilation.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/12/10/ipod-touch-voip-update/#comments - Navizon Lite offers free GPS positioning to 1/2 mile
I have posted before about Navizon, the iPhone pseudo-GPS system. It uses cell phone towers to provide a rough estimate of your location without using actual satellite GPS positioning information. It costs $25 to buy and people have reported mixed results. Since all the cell phone tower information is provided by volunteers, some positioning is more accurate, especially in areas with a high population density where people have better filled in data.If you don't mind being off by a half mile or more, Navizon has released a low-rent freebie version that they say is accurate to about 1000 meters. (Navizon claims 10-30m accuracy for the paid version.) This makes the tool pretty much worthless for anyone, say, on the Amazing Race (they took two clues, why weren't they penalized?) but not so bad if it works for people driving along highways.

If you're one of those fans without a local Apple Store (like me), take heart. Apple plans to open 40 new stores in 2008, according to senior retail VP Ron Johnson. While at the opening of New York City's 14th street store, Mr. Johnson said that Apple retail will expand internationally next year.
Apple has three stores planned for the UK and is currently negotiating a store for Mexico. We'll let you know what we find out. In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled! Send us any spyshots you take.

OS X's Calculator application is something I basically ignore. Between Spotlight and Terminal's bc, I rarely if ever use it. So it was a pleasant and welcome surprise when TUAW reader Roberto Mateu gave us a heads up that Leopard's calculator was updated with better RPN support.
Calculator has done RPN for some time--if you're still running Tiger, you can see the old version by selecting View > RPN for any of the three calculator types. Under Tiger, the = button changed to Enter and that was about it. Leopard has updated the RPN calculator by adding multi-line entry so you can see your stack as it grows. It's a much nicer way to use RPN and TUAW heartily approves.

Blogger Shawn Blanc has written an exhaustively thorough review of NewNewsWire (We interviewed Brent Simmons, author of NetNewsWire, over the summer). He begins with a description of how he first became aware of the application and goes on to describe a history of the UI, his "favorite things" about NNW and concludes with an exploration of the paid version.
Note that Shawn intends to give other popular applications, like Coda, SuperDuper! and Transmit, the same treatment. We can't wait.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Remember Marian, the guy who's building a preamped mic
mikefor the iPod touch? Today he writes that touch hacker eok has ported Samuel's SvSIP to the iPod. SvSIP uses the SIP protocol to connect to other participants and to allow you to talk over WiFi. I tried porting SIP myself and didn't get very far.Marian writes that eok has been able to both send and receive calls and promises screen shots as soon as possible.

Filed under: iPod Family, Internet Tools, iPhone
Awesome TUAW Reader Tom King enjoyed using my javascript iPastelet (his phrase--isn't it great?) and created this interactive tool that automates the bookmarklet design process.
His web form lets you specify the text to paste and the bookmarklet name. You can even skip the "Paste here" confirmation alert and paste into the first available field. Click "Make iPastelet", drag the link into your bookmarks and you're ready to sync.
Cool stuff. Read more about here. Great job, Tom.

Filed under: iPod Family, Odds and ends, Bad Apple
This situation will probably not affect most iPod owners but there is a 5 account limit in place for iPod song syncs. Although iTunes seems to be able to handle songs from an unlimited number of accounts, you can sync music from up to 5 accounts to any one iPod and not more. Bad news for large families with multiple accounts, but good news for the RIAA I suppose.
Update: So Mike and I ended up in a discussion about this. My point was that it made sense to create accounts for your kids so that they were licensed to their own music and could take their music with them when they went off to college. Mike answered that people should just buy DRM-free music at Amazon or Amie Street or wherever. My question to any lawyers out there is whether it's legal to gift un-DRMed MP3s to your kids and let them "take' the music with them. Thoughts?
