  • Scribbles simple drawing

    Filed under:

Of late there have been several Core Image based image editors released for the Mac. Scribbles does not attempt to be one of them. It is first and foremost for, well, scribbling or doodling. What makes it interesting is the very simple interface, plus the stroke rendering engine that automatically smoothes out strokes. This is particularly apparent when using the mouse to write out letters. Instead of jagged edges you get fluid lines. The interface is designed to be extremely easy to use, and accordingly the tool set is very limited. Nonetheless, there is basic 3D layers support which makes it relatively easy to get some nice effects. My sense is this would be a great drawing application for kids.

Scribbles is $19.95 and a demo is available from atebits. There's also a screencast on that same page worth checking out.

  • iPhone iSync: the beginnings of WiFi syncing

iPhone iSync is potentially a very interesting application with great promise. It's a GUI implementation of an rsync-based folder synchronization tool that works with WiFi. This means it will sync a folder on your Mac to your iPhone/iPod touch over the wireless network. In the future, this suggests the possibility of iTunes syncing over WiFi... unfortunately, it's not quite there yet.

The author, francisois, says that he has "reached a breakthrough that has allowed me to synchronize my own iPod Touch over wi-fi with an older version of iTunes," and he is working on getting iTunes 7.5 support but a few obstacles remain. Nonetheless, he eventually plans for syncing music, photos, contacts, and bookmarks over WiFi.

Obviously you'll need a jailbroken iPhone to use this. If you have any experience with "shell scripts and ssh and especially iTunes library access," francisois is looking for help. iPhone iSync is a free download from its Google Code page.

  • Mobile Safari plug-in downloads files to your iPhone/iPod touch

Now this is just amazingly cool. iPhone hacker hachu developed a download plug-in for MobileSafari. Once installed and customized, it allows you to download data off the Internet and store it on your iPhone or iPod touch local disk in the /var/root/Downloads folder.

I downloaded the package (it's variously on RapidShare and BadOnGo; see the hackint0sh thread for links) and gave it a whirl. Following the instructions on the thread for modifying the Info.plist file, I told the plug-in to download MP3 files. (I had to disable playback as well in the QuickTime plug-in--so make sure to read the entire thread!) Now back in Safari, when I navigated to an MP3 file and selected it, this green Download button appeared. I tapped it, and the file downloaded perfectly. Before, the QuickTime plug-in would have just played the file back in Safari.

iPhone enthusiast RohitK asked if there was an easy way to play back these downloaded files using my software. As there wasn't at the time, I went ahead and modded my SendFile application to search ~/Downloads as well as ~/Media/Documents. You can grab a copy of the modded app here. This allows you to email, share and play back the downloaded media on demand, whether or not you are connected to the Internet.

    Thanks to RohitK and Xadacka.

  • Follow-up: Recording Voice on the iPod Touch

As iPod touch enthusiast Marian continues working on his pre-amped dock-connector Mic for the iPod touch, my Amazon Marketplace MicroMemo (i.e. clearance and cheap) showed up this morning. I loaded the latest Voice Notes onto my iPod touch, hooked in the MicroMemo and gave it a try.

Like most recorders, the MicroMemo provides two settings: Mic and Line. I found that if I shouted into the attached microphone on the Mic setting, I could just about be barely heard on the recording. Using line-in from my Macintosh was far more successful, albeit with line distortion and clipping.

I've put my test samples over at my ftp site. The LineInput is 15 seconds of music straight from my mac, over the line connector, using the Line settings. The two voice samples are Line and Mic. The Line sample is completely inaudible. There actually is a signal on the Microphone version but it's very very low--be careful not to blast out your eardrums after adjusting your playback to hear it.

I suspect if I lower the volume from my Mac, the distortion and clipping will go away but although I tried hooking my microphone through a radio-shack amplifier, the Mic recording remained very limited.

I'm not sure why the iPod touch audio-in signal would vary all that much from, say, the iPod video. I tested the same MicroMemo with a 5th Generation iPod and it worked beautifully, with clear levels.

  • Mophie Juice Pack for iPhone

One of the early concerns about the iPhone was battery life with the non-replaceable battery. While most of those concerns seem to have been allayed, I'm sure there are still folks out there that run their iPhones all the way down on a regular basis. For those people, the Mophie Juice Pack may be just what the doctor ordered. This external battery is like a slip case for the iPhone adding "up to [an] additional 8 hours" of talk time. The Juice Pack is itself charged by a Dock connector and intelligently supplies power to the iPhone so that the Juice Pack completely runs down itself before letting the iPhone switch to its internal battery.

The Mophie Juice Pack is available for pre-order at $99.95 with an estimated ship date of Dec 21.

  • Apple to pay higher wholesale movie price reports Ars

Over at infinite Loop, Former TUAW heavyweight David Chartier posts that Apple will soon be paying a $15 per movie wholesale price to the movie studios. David sees this as Apple caving into Hollywood after a tense face-off.

Me? I see this another way. I don't believe the movie sales over at the iTunes store have been all that hugely successful. With competition from Walmart and weak consumer interest, I think Apple is changing its direction. Instead of movie sales, I'm thinking movie rentals. We've seen evidence for this both on the Mac in the iTunes binary (thanks Evan DiBiase) and on the iPhone (thanks Pumpkin).

Rentals could do a lot for Apple's bottom line. It would re-energize the lagging Apple TV as a platform, it would expand the iPhone's reach as a portable media device, especially for travelers, and it would basically give up on iTunes-distributed buy-to-own movies as an unprofitable but fully explored avenue.

So what do you think? Evil MPAA? Weak Apple? Or a new paradigm on the horizon?

  • New Apple ad "Misprint" cites PC World on fastest Vista laptop

Back in early November, PC World magazine gave a wet, sloppy kiss to the MacBook Pro, noting that "[t]he fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year--or for that matter, ever--is a Mac." Apparently this rousing endorsement of a laptop so freakishly powerful, so undeniably force-of-nature fast that it flat-out screams while running an OS that it happens to support only in 'bridesmaid mode'... well, that is the sort of thing that causes marketing executives to cock their heads and listen like extras in an E.F. Hutton ad.

Apple's new "Misprint" ad, appearing online and on TV now, features an irate PC calling the editorial offices of PC World to complain about this obvious benchmarking error. It's a funny ad, but along with the recent Podium and PR Lady ads, this new spot provokes some fascinating cognitive dissonance. We're told that Vista is undesirable, that users are 'upgrading' back to XP -- but hey, if you're gonna run it, you could run it awful quick on a Mac. Is it just me, or is that somewhat weird?

    Thanks Alex
