- Pixelmator 1.1 adds new filters, tablet support and more
Filed under: Software
The well-known alternative image editor Pixelmator has gotten an update to version 1.1 bringing some eagerly awaited features. Besides better Leopard compatibility, the "Kitten" release adds support for pressure-sensitive graphics tablets, "over 100 New Filters," and third-party filter support by way of "Core Image Units & Quartz Composer Compositions." Another useful addition is a Quick Look plugin that brings easy image previews for "any of more than 100 image file formats supported by Pixelmator."
Pixelmator 1.1 is a free update to registered users. The regular price is $59 and a demo is available.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Tom Yager, one of my favorite tech writers, has posted a great overview of how Time Machine works in Leopard. Imagine my surprise to find out that Apple's backup solution doesn't involve a Flux Capacitor of any kind! It does, however, involve lots of file copying, and clever disk space saving measures. Tom answers some questions about how much work you'll lose if you need to restore from a Time Machine backup (given the nature of how Time Machine saves files that answer varies depending on how far back you need to go). He also sheds some light on what, exactly, Time Machine is doing.

If you're anything like me, and I know you are, you dream of playing Super Mario Galaxy but refuse to stand in line to buy a Wii (or pay a ridiculous amount for one, or wake up early to get one... ok, I'm cheap and lazy. Are you happy now?). Luckily for us, Riverfolder Software is giving a Wii away on December 15th to one lucky person.
Riverfold, it should be pointed out, is the maker of Wii Transfer, my favorite piece of software that I have absolutely no use for (but with a little luck I soon might!). Wii Transfer allows you to stream/play all sorts of media from your Mac onto your Wii, and it only costs $19.
You don't care about that though, you want to know how you can win a Wii! Simple: if you have a Twitter account simply send a message to @wii and you'll be entered (that's what I did, in the interest of full disclosure). If you don't have a Twitter account it is obvious that you lack whimsy in your life, but don't fret you needn't be whimsical to enter this content. Simply head on over to this website and enter your email, and an email of a friend, and you're all set.
No purchase is necessary, but if you do win the Wii I think you should get yourself a copy of Wii Transfer. It is a very cool app, after-all.

Filed under: Gaming, Multimedia, Software, Video
We've posted on Connect360 from nullriver several times before. This handy Preference Pane application allows you to stream media (music, pictures, and video) from your Mac to your Xbox 360 (by emulating a Windows machine). Well the Fall 2007 Dashboard update for Xbox 360 just dropped this week and, among other things, added DivX and Xvid codec support. So nullriver has updated Connect360 to version 3.2 with support for these video codecs.
Connect360 remains $20 and a demo is available.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Stacks is one of the selling points of Leopard, and many users love it. Many, but not all. If you'd like to use hierarchical menus in Leopard, try one of these three solutions.
Quay 1.0 was released last week as shareware (here is our post about Quay). For €7, Quay provides custom-sorted hierarchical menus, re-sizable icons and a customizable dock icon. Undocumented APIs are not used, and Quay isn't a hack. If you only want to use one Quay Dock icon it is free, but you'll have to pay for the program to use two or more.
Also available is freeware HierarchicalDock by Eternal Storms Software. To create a hierarchical menu, simply drag a folder onto the application's icon. You can opt to preview your files with Quick Look instead of icons, and sort items by last used date or creation date.
Finally, check out OldFolder. It's free and open source, so you can fiddle around with it. Simply launch it and browse to the folder you'd like to use (support for multiple folders is possible, too).
There you go. Three ways to go "old school" on your dock. Enjoy.

When the iPhone became available in France on November 29th, the French said, "Oui."
According to a report at Reuters, Orange has sold 30,000 iPhones in the first five days . As Fortune points out, that's nearly 1 iPhone for every 2,000 Frenchmen. Compare that to the 270,000 iPhones sold in the United States' opening weekend (or about 1 for every 1,111 Americans), and it's clear that the iPhone is a hit in France.
What's more, 17 percent of Orange France stores sold out of iPhones in the first 21 hours. It should also be noted that France shoppers can purchase iPhones without a contract that ties them to a single carrier.

After finding the maximum speaker phone volume too low for normal use, I decided to poke around and see if there was something I could do about it. I knew that the Celestial framework folder (/System/Library/Frameworks/Celestial.framework/) had a Maximum Volume property list, so I decided to edit mine and see if I could effect a volume boost. In the property list, I adjusted the Default -> Default value up to 0.99, up from 0.7 and found that it seemed to nicely boost my speaker volume. Is this a real fix? Or did I just psychosomatically convinced my ears that they were happier? You tell me in the comments.

If your note-taking, data-collecting app doesn't agree with you, you've got plenty of options out there; as for me, I'm happy with Yojimbo, and happier now that 1.5 is out. The new version adds images as a full-fledged data type (meaning you can sync pictures via .Mac, although you're warned not to try and replace iPhoto or Aperture) and improves search performance. There's also now an auto-update feature, at long last!
You can get the 10.4 MB download here. Note that the update requires a change to your database structure, so it will back up your existing files before it runs.

Over at the Wall Street Journal, Ben Worthen posts that iPhones were responsible for 0.09% of all Web page views in November. In comparison, all the other mobile Windows-based browsers accounted for only 0.06% of page views. From this, we can deduce the following:- Viewing the Web on most mobile devices stinks.
- Viewing the Web on the iPhone doesn't stink.
- Most people still use computers to view the web.
Thanks, Eddie.

If you're the kind of Mac administrator who likes to be notified when a drive fails or a server goes offline (the word for this kind of Mac admin is "employable"), you'll want to check out John Welch's deep-dive primer for SNMP on the Mac. Building on a May 2007 introductory article from Andrina Kelly at MacEnterprise, John provides a walkthrough for Leopard's new SNMP hardware reporting and much more helpful info.
For those asking "What the heck is SNMP?" see here. Simple Network Management Protocol lets you monitor remote devices, servers and printers in a lightweight and reasonably standardized fashion. Whenever you see a gaggle of geeks checking Blackberries or iPhones and casually announcing "Server's down," chances are you're seeing SNMP at work.

With Back to My Mac and iChat screen sharing, remote control options feature heavily on the Sparta List of Leopard features. Now, the remote control tool LogMeIn Free, in beta for the Mac since June, has reached release status. With the free client you can initiate or accept remote control sessions, cross-platform and through most firewalls. It's great for family support or switcher hand-holding. The 5.5 MB client can be downloaded now, and you can use it once you register with LogMeIn.
LogMeIn has a heavy following among IT pros, who may subscribe to the industrial-strength IT Reach version of the product for additional features. Having a Mac client as a full peer helps remind those systems managers that there's a different-thinkin' crowd out there in the market.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/12/05/logmein-for-mac-reaches-1-0/#comments - Adobe Flash Player 9 update out
Filed under: Internet Tools
The plugin formerly known as 'Moviestar' -- Adobe's H.264-capable version of the Flash player -- is now officially released for the Mac (along with Windows and Linux) and downloadable from Adobe's site. Sure, it can play back HD and fullscreen video, but will it reduce the performance hit that Mac users take whenever a Flash movie pops into a browser window? Let you know as soon as we try it.
As our buddy David noted, if you've been running an early beta version of Flash 9 you may want to run Adobe's uninstaller before upgrading.
In terms of the wider online video market, the adoption of the H.264 codec solidifies the QuickTime/Flash axis of power in a big way. Content owners with libraries of QuickTime movies in H.264 now can republish for Flash without reencoding, and YouTube's effort to convert clips for iPhone use now can be leveraged to provide higher-quality Flash playback as well. Big day for Adobe, good day for video fans and producers.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/12/05/adobe-flash-player-9-update-out/#comments - QuickTime exploit in the wild, demoed on Second Life
Filed under: Security
As reported, the RTSP vulnerability in QuickTime was accompanied by working exploit code, accelerating the process of malefactors and miscreants turning it into actual malicious payloads. Symantec & other outlets have since reported that the QuickTime exploit has been seen in the wild; the exploit causes Windows clients to download a secondary malware package.
Meanwhile, security researchers Charlie Miller and Dino Dai Zovi (he of the CanSecWest hacking prize) leveraged the QuickTime vulnerability to demonstrate an attack within the Second Life virtual environment. Since SL uses QuickTime to play video in-game, any player wandering within activation distance of the 'evil movie' can be pwned. Miller and Dai Zovi's demo causes the victim to gesticulate, shout "I've been hacked!" and -- most disturbingly -- send 12 Linden dollars to the attackers' SL account.
The Second Life exploit starts to veer disturbingly towards Snow Crash territory. I don't want to spoil Neal Stephenson's brilliant breakthrough novel for those who haven't read it, so go read it. For the rest of us, doesn't the idea of a 'virus video' that attacks anyone who watches it seem awfully familiar?
