- RIP Netscape Navigator (1994 - 2008)
Soon, Netscape Navigator - the first highly successful graphical web browser (yeah, yeah, I know Mosaic came before Netscape, but I don't remember seeing Mosaic floppy-disks bundled with my PC World and Macworld magazines in 1995, at least not under the name "Mosaic") - will be nothing more than a footnote in Internet history. Let's take a moment of silence for the big N. OK, that was long enough.
AOL, the parent company of this blog and Netscape, has announced that they will cease support for the current version of Netscape as of February 1, 2008. Netscape, which at its peak in the mid-1990s held 80% of the web browser marketshare, and was a player in Browser Wars 1.0.
Long before Apple released Safari in 2003, Netscape was a pretty familiar application to scores of Mac users. Even after Apple started shipping Internet Explorer for Mac with OS 8.1 and enabling it as the default browser, Netscape Navigator was still included, and at least in my experience, often preferred over IE for Mac. The very first web browser I ever used was Netscape Navigator 1.something on a Power Mac 6200 (which some say was the worst Mac ever) way back in 1995. Although other browsers were available at the time, Netscape was the first to be cross platform (and perform the same across platforms - which was an important distinction).
Shortly before AOL bought Netscape in 1998, the code base of Netscape Communicator 4 was released under an open-source license. This project, which was called Mozilla, eventually resulted into what we now know as Firefox (note that the Mozilla team basically rewrote the code for what became the basis of the Mozilla suite, later forked as Firefox, from the ground up, as the Communicator code was too much of a mess).
Although Netscape is gone, a theme is available for the current version of Firefox to make it look like Netscape 9. No word on when a theme like the image below will become available.
Netscape Navigator 3 for classic Mac OS

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPhone
ComputerWorld has created another end of the year list: the 25 most innovative products of 2007. An Apple product isn't on the top of the list, that place goes to Google Gears, but the iPhone does clock in at the number 2 spot which isn't too shabby. The biggest innovation, according to CW, is the touch screen display. I'm going to disagree with that, because I've used devices before the iPhone that had touch screens and they weren't as much fun, or as easy to use, as the iPhone. The real innovation of the iPhone is that the whole is much greater than the sum of the parts. The software and hardware work together to make using this device a pleasure. Here's hoping that in a few years other handset makers will figure out what Apple has done with the iPhone and emulate it, of course by then Apple will be on the 3 or 4th revision of the iPhone. The mind boggles as to what that future iPhone will do.
Oh, and ComputerWorld, how about innovating a little bit with your website and not splitting up a relatively short article into 5 separate webpages? That'd be awesome.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/12/28/computerworld-crowns-iphone-as-2nd-most-innovative-product-of-20/#comments - NYT: 'More than one studio to offer iRentals at Macworld'
Filed under: Macworld, iTS, Rumors, Apple, Apple TV
Whilst the blogosphere is known for its seemingly endless attempts at Apple rumour one-upping, the New York Times has joined the fray, not only re-iterating the Financial Times' earlier statement that Twentieth Century Fox will be on-stage for the Stevenote but also adding "more than one studio [will] appear onstage at the company's Macworld exhibition .... to endorse a new Apple movie rental service."
When the news broke of Fox being first to sign up to iTunes movie rentals, we're certain that more than a few folks were surprised at the news: if only because it wasn't Disney (and of course Pixar) who were leading the Apple movie bandwagon forward again.

Mail.app users who are all about information overload rejoice: DockStar has been updated to alert you about even more unread content in Mail. That's right, the little utility that transforms your Dock, Dashboard, and Menubar into a command center for all things Mail.app related now actually handles alerts for everything that Mail.app offers up in Leopard. I am speaking, of course, of both To Dos and RSS feeds. Now you'll never have to guess how far behind you are.
This update also includes an additional badge shape and numerous bug fixes and Leopard tweaks. DockStar costs $9.95.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Odds and ends, Apple Financial, Steve Jobs, Apple, iPhone
Insanely Great Mac has the breakdown on a meeting between O2 (purveyors of the iPhone in Britain) and Mr. Jobs from the UK's Financial Times, and it seems iPhone users across the pond can't get enough data. Over 60% of iPhone users use over 25mb/month of data, while only 1.8% of non-iPhone users on O2 go over that mark. That's a lot of data downloading.
It's probably not a surprise, then, that about 60% of iPhone buyers are also new to O2, which, in my estimation, means that people who switched for the iPhone also switched from a non-data cellphone, and are making up for the difference. We talked on the Talkcast a little while ago about how the iPhone isn't necessarily stealing the "business smartphone" audience away from brands like Blackberry-- it's actually attracting new smartphone users completely. And there are a lot of them-- O2 is looking to sell 200,000 iPhones in Britain by the end of January, and they say that despite Apple's cut of the profits, they're making money on every one.
Finally, we get almost-but-not-quite-final confirmation that the 3G iPhone is due next year, and that O2 will very likely carry it. Which isn't really a surprise-- seems like things are going pretty well for O2 and Apple in GB, and so it's hard to see either one of them breaking up a good thing.

HandBrake is one of those applications that we adore here at TUAW HQ. It makes converting DVDs into a variety of digital files a snap (though only use it with DVDs you own. Don't be pirates, kids). Chris Breen, of Macworld fame (and an amateur astronomer it would seem) shows us how to use HandBrake like a pro. Breen goes a step beyond 'use the presets' and delves into what many of the options HandBrake offers up actually do, and how they impact your files.
Check out the video, and get to ripping your DVDs!

Filed under: Hardware, Tips and tricks, Odds and ends, Internet Tools, Open Source, iPhone
I like Mac OS X Hints a lot, although I will admit that most of the hints they post just aren't for me-- either they're for things that I just don't have a need to do, or they're for things I already figured out a solution for on my own. But lately, I've been trying to figure out if there was a way to start up bittorrent downloads from my iPhone (we've already been able to control clients remotely, but getting the torrent file was the hard part). And so I was ecstatic to see this tip from Whosawhatsis-- with just a little tweaking, you can install a bookmarklet on the iPhone and a script on a PHP server that will send a URL from the iPhone to the server, and then download that URL directly into a folder that a bittorrent client (Transmission is used in the example) will monitor to download the torrent.
Pretty slick. Whosa runs this on a separate server, but while I'd have to read up on exactly how to do it (or maybe our commenters could jump in with suggestions), I'm sure that it wouldn't be too hard to enable a Mac to run a PHP script when asked remotely. Get that running, make the necessary modifications in Who's script, and bingo, you should be able to click the bookmark and then the link on your iPhone, and have the torrent file show up in your Mac, ready for a bittorrent client to grab it immediately.Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Apple TV
Apple products often find themselves on the yearly 'Best of' lists composed by the mainstream media and bloggers alike, but they don't often grace the 'Worst of' lists. Sadly, Yahoo! Tech has deemed the Apple TV as one of the 'Top 10 Worst Tech Products' of the year. Apple TV made the list for a few reasons: you can't buy content directly from the box, the lack of updates to the software, and the lack of DVR capabilities are all reasons that the Apple TV is on the naughty list.
I find myself agreeing with Yahoo! on this one. The Apple TV is pretty much just a glorified iTunes extender, and that's why I haven't bought one for myself. That might all change, though, if you are able to rent movies directly from the device in the near future. Let's revisit this one after Steve's Macworld keynote, shall we?

It's Amazon Day and nobody told me -- more news from Big Beige concerning Apple products, as the annual Best Of Amazon list was announced earlier. The MacBook & MacBook Pro topped two computer lists, as the most-gifted and most-loved computers respectively; meanwhile, the iPod Nano was the top electronics product both gifted and wished-for -- some karma alignment at work there. Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard made the most-loved list as the top software product evoking an emotional connection with users; this is unsurprising, although the relationship of some users to Leopard might be described by Dr. Phil as passive-aggressive.
Interestingly, Apple products were absent from the actual best-sellers list (top software: Office 2007 Students & Teachers; top DVDs, Planet Earth complete series) despite the love-list and wishlist smackdown. Weirdly, the top computer item by total units sold for 2007 was the Nokia tablet, not exactly a computer (unless you count the iPhone too) and having a bit of sales leverage for being available 11 months out of the year.

We first heard about iTunes Tagging back in September and it looks like it is going to make an appearance at Macworld 2008. iTunes Tagging, in case you don't recall, is the name of a method by which one would dock their iPod with an HD Radio. You hit a button when you hear a song you like and that song's info is 'tagged' onto your iPod. When you sync your iPod with iTunes those tagged songs show up as a playlist which lets you easily purchase the songs.
iLounge reports that since many HD Radio broadcasters and manufacturers have signed on with this technology Apple is ready to push it onto eager consumers. It sounds interesting, though I can't recall the last time I actually listened to a radio (HD or not).Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:

If you want to "cash-in" on all of those after holiday sales, look no further than your Mac's desktop. Apple is starting a new winter promotion for iPhoto books and calendars. By using two promotional codes you can save 20% on books and calendars through February 29, 2008. Apple says that the book code will also work in Aperture.
For calendars, use code: NAWinterCal08
For photo books, use code: NAWinterBook08

I love Flickr, Yahoo's photo sharing site, and I find myself posting every picture I take on it. Today I decided to whip up a blog post (for my personal blog) highlighting my favorite pictures of the year in my Flickrstream. I first tried looking over my pictures on Flickr itself, but it soon became clear that a desktop client would make this task much more pleasant.
Enter FlickrFinder, which isn't even a 1.0 piece of software but this clever little app shows lots of promise. Basically, FlickrFinder lets you access Flickr from your desktop using an interface that is the spitting image of the Finder (if you hate the Finder you won't find much to like about FlickrFinder). You can look at pictures based on tags, in groups, or by contacts amongst other criteria.
FlickrFinder isn't fully baked yet, but given its price (free) it is well worth a look. I wonder how development on Exposure is coming along...Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsКомментарии к сообщению:
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/12/28/flickrfinder/#comments - Apple patent reveals plans for more iPhone wifi purchases
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Rumors, Software, Apple, iPhone
I'd just like to say that I called it. Way back earlier this year when Apple first announced that you'd be able to use your iPhone to buy iTunes songs at Starbucks, I commented that this was only the beginning, and now Forbes publishes news about a patent that confirms exactly that: Apple is working on other ways to sell downloads (and even merchandise) on the spot to iPhone users.
Imagine being at the movie theater, really liking the film's soundtrack, and having the ability to buy it on your iPhone with a click. Or ordering your latte from your seat at the internet cafe. Or hitting a button to buy something with your credit card at an electronics store, and then having it waiting at the entrance when you leave.
All of these things are possible, providing that a) companies are willing to install the infrastructure in the store, and b) Apple is willing to create the software for the iPhone. Given the prices involved, it'll obviously only start with large chains-- you won't be able to walk into your neighborhood grocery store and do it right away. But there is money to be made here, and if Apple can find common ground with retailers we'll see the Starbucks deal happen in more places for sure.

As if you haven't spent enough already, another opportunity to pull out that whimpering, threadbare credit card comes along -- Amazon's year-end software sale includes some Mac-only & crossplatform titles at a substantial break.
Highlights include a .Mac family pack for $140, iWork '08 family pack for $80, VMware Fusion for $42.50 after rebates, and Final Draft 7 for $170 (never hurts to be prepared).

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/12/28/amazon-year-end-deals-on-mac-software/#comments - Mac OS X 10.5.2 seeded to developers
When I asked Santa Steve for iPhone stability, a number of people left comments asking not for iPhone stability but for Leopard stability -- as it seems that not everyone's been enjoying a trouble-free few months with Leopard.
Thankfully, if you're waiting with bated breath for OS X 10.5.2, then you might be intrigued to hear from ITwire that OS X 10.5.2 has been seeded to developers. Sure, it's no big surprise that Apple is always working on the next update, but given that the update is currently weighing in at around 350MB there's clearly plenty that the Cupertino geniuses are working to resolve in the forthcoming update.
Whilst the smart money says that we'll have to wait until Macworld for the update, I'm certain that plenty of readers with big-cat issues would rather see it a little sooner.
