  • Skype joins the Leopard party

If you're a Leopard-using Skype lover, you've been without the quintessential Voice over IP service since the Skype Mac blog announced there were a few issues with Skype on Leopard last month. However, Skype has released a new version of their Mac client which not only fixes these Leopard niggles, but also adds a shiny new feature to the fold: VGA (640x480) video is now enabled by default, and at 25 frames per second too - meaning that cross-platform video chats just got more detailed.

Of course, there is just one downside: the current Leopard-compatible version is still a beta, so if you're scared of pre-release software, then this isn't for you. If you fancy living life on the wild side, so to speak, then the 34MB download is available from the Skype for Mac site.

  • 32 ways to speed up Aperture

    Filed under:

Aperture, Apple's professional photo workflow application, is one of my favourite applications. Period. However, with its RAW processing and non-destructive editing, it's something of a resource-intensive application -- even on high powered systems.

Thankfully, Aperture supremo Steve Weller (a.k.a. Bagelturf) has published 32 mighty-handy tips on how you can speed up the application. Some are perhaps more obvious -- for example finding a better graphics card for Aperture's GPU-based editing -- but there's also a selection of great little tweaks you can make to Aperture to get it running a little snappier. See Steve's site for the full rundown.

  • Steve Jobs to give MWSF 08 Keynote

Its not a particularly big surprise, but IDG World Expo - organisers of Macworld Conference & Expo - have announced that Steve Jobs will of course be giving the 2008 Macworld San Francisco Keynote. The date to put in your diary? 0900 on Tuesday 15th January 2008 (overnight queuing for top seats is, naturally, optional).

We'll be providing coverage of both the Keynote and the rest of the Expo (with a selection of the TUAW team roster heading west for the biggest Mac event of the year) so save the date: and let the speculation commence, or rather continue....

  • AT&T issues statement on iPhone data-only plans for hard of hearing customers

    Filed under:

I put in a call today to AT&T public relations, following up to our post last week. At that time, I wrote that AT&T in Colorado had mistakenly offered a data-only plan, which was rescinded. Today, Warner May of AT&T called me back to clarify.

He told me that the original offer posted at DeafMac never existed and was, as posted, a mistake. AT&T does not offer an iPhone-specific data-only plan at this time: not for hard of hearing, not for the general population. They are working to have one in the near future.

The rumor about hearing customers overwhelming the plan and destroying opportunities for the hard of hearing community was just that, a rumor. No such incident occurred. May went on to explain that AT&T offers a variety of text accessibility plans (TAPs). These plans are available for a number of devices including Blackberries and such but not the iPhone. May was unable to tell me what it takes to qualify for such plans, whether a doctor's note for example was required. He promised to get back to me with an answer about qualifications and I will update this post when he does.

AT&T offers a hard-of-hearing hotline for customers who want to learn more about accessibility options. You can call them at 866-241-6568 (Voice) or 866-241-6567 (TTY).

Thanks to Michael Coe and Warner May.

Update: I'm told that iPhone TAP plans, when and if they exist, will only be offered to deaf customers. Customers will be sent certification paperwork, which they fill out and return to the call center. Once received and approved, either a plan rate change is applied to their current plan or the call center can help the customer set up a new activation. Paperwork (when this goes live) can be submitted via TTY, email, fax and postal mail.

  • Apple Store 14th Street opening time confirmed

    Filed under:

Are you ready to shop and roll? As we reported last week, the 14th Street ("Meatpacking") Apple Store in NYC is due to open this Friday, and official Apple e-vites went out earlier today. New York City's fourth Apple retail outlet (three in Manhattan, one on Staten Island -- no love for Brooklyn, Apple? What's up with that?) will be opening to the public at 6 pm on Friday 12/7. The store will be open 9 am to midnight Mon-Sat and 9-7pm on Sundays.

As was noted last week, the subway icons above are a bit misleading, as none of those lines actually gets you especially close to the store -- the 1 stops at 14th Street and 7th Avenue, but then it's a long walk into a stiff Hudson River wind to get to 9th Ave. and the store location. The closest subway is actually the E train (or A/C/L... heh heh), at 14th and 8th Ave. Be sure to send us your pictures and impressions if you head over for the opening!

Thanks Rich, Brian and everyone else who sent this in

  • Cha-ching hits 1.2.1

In the Leopard onslaught, Cha-Ching 1.2 slipped under our radar - however today sees the release of yet another (minor) update: version 1.2.1. For those of you not familiar with Cha-Ching, it's an easy-to-use money-management tool whose import options (such as Quicken and Microsoft Money formats) and slick interface mean that you might not need something such as Quicken to balance your books.

Of course, you're all clamouring for the details of what's new and exciting in this update. There's plenty of enhancements, not least of which are a number of Leopard fixes to ensure that Leopard-running folks can start budgeting (for MacWorld San Francisco?) in style with:
    • the ability to backup vaults locally (in addition to the existing .Mac backup option)
    • the ability to pay bills directly from the Master Vault
    • plenty of graphical enhancements for the new big-cat
Cha-Ching sells for $40, with version 1.2.1 a free update for existing registered users. Version 1.2.1 is available now from the Midnight Apps website or via the built-in software update.

  • MacUpdate promo bundle discounts 7-10 apps

Between the Zots, the Heists, the Santas and the Good Food, it's clear that there's a full cornucopia of shopping discounts for Mac software buyers this season. Now the MacUpdate crew is jumping in on the festivities with a time-limited deal on a $49 bundle of seven software packages. As more bundles are sold, additional applications get added to the shopping cart at $0 additional cost.

The bundled apps include fan favorite RapidWeaver, FTP client ForkLift, 'scrapbooking' tool Memory Miner and paper/PDF organizer Yep. Once the 1000-bundle sales threshold is reached, the intriguing (and pricey!) mind mapping tool XMIND will be cut loose from the restraints, followed by iStabilize and PulpMotion on the far side. The deals expire by 12/11, so shop wisely.

If you've got a creatively-minded switcher on your gift list, the MU bundle might be just the thing. Want more stocking stuffer suggestions? Keep an eye out for our upcoming gift guides, all this month.

  • The EVDO Card Shootout

As I've often said right here at TUAW, I have a need for speed. I want my computers, my phones, and especially my Internet access to be as fast as possible. When I'm at home, secure in the knowledge that my Time Warner Business Cable connection is the fastest I can get (until FIOS comes to my hood), things are going well for me and looking good.

But what happens if I have to leave the house and go on the road as I frequently do? How can I possibly maintain my connection to the Internet while mobile and still get the speed I need? Fortunately, there a a few solutions to this problem such as using wireless "hotspots" around town or using a cell phone's data connection as a high speed modem for my Mac Book Pro.

However, for true freedom, a hotspot isn't the answer for me as you can't always find one when you need one or they cost too much money. As an iPhone user, the option to use my cell phone as a high speed modem was also out. So, that left one obvious choice for me: EVDO cards. Now that I had decided an EVDO card was the answer to my needs, several more questions immediately came to mind.

Which card should I get and from which provider? Would the cards work with my laptop of choice: the Apple Mac Book Pro? How much would the cards and data plans cost me? And the most important question of all: what kind of speed would I get?
